Goal Zero 19004 Nomad 7 / Rockout Combo

Goal Zero 19004 Nomad 7 / Rockout ComboI bought this guy as a nice emergency item and also for camping. I connected the panel to my HTC G2 Android phone while it was playing the radio out of the included Goal0 speakers. I had the panels positioned in a not-so-optimal way with only moderate sunlight and it charged my phone about 12% in an hour WHILE the radio was draining the battery and connected to the external speakers. That battery is rated at 1500mah for anyone who cares about the specifics. The other piece that I purchased alongside this kit was the Goal0 battery charging pod. You can place 4 AA size NIMH batteries in the pod for charging with the solar panel. When there is no sunlight around, you can use your available AA batteries to charge your USB devices. I used the charging pod to recharge my smartphone again at night as well as my Kindle. Honestly, if you have a lot of good quality low self discharge batteries around (Like Eneloops) you can pretty much get away with not buying the solar panel at all, the charging pod will pretty much do the job in the short term.

As far as the speaker goes, the sound is AWFUL out of the box. As others have mentioned in their reviews of these speakers, the cones are covered by a heavy cardboard material. I simply took a flathead screwdriver and used it to break the glue seal around the edge of speaker that adheres it to the case. After that, I used the flathead to pry out the speaker from the case. From there you can see the inside of the casing is lined with cardboard, and on that cardboard, there's a fine indentation where the speakers are. I used a boxcutter to cut circles out where the speaker cones are. Place the speakers back in the casing and you're good to go. One note about this modification is that obviously the speakers are more than likely no longer "water resistant" as originally advertised.

All in all, very happy with the purchase. I docked one star for the speakers being horrible as they were out of the box.

I purchased the Nomad 7 / Rockout Combo from Amazon about one month ago and wanted to test it before commenting. It weighed 370 gms / 13.1 oz. on the kitchen scale without any cables. Just like the other Goal Zero products it is well designed and well made using quality materials. If taken care of should last decades (do not throw on the floor or drive the truck over it, like the You Tube videos). It is nice to see the solar panel can take the abuse if an accident happens.

The solar panels are mounted to a heavy plastic sheet which gives the rigidity needed to protect the thin brittle solar cells (think a thin potato chip strength). The fronts of the solar panels are covered with an unknown clear plastic reminiscent of Tedlar. The outer shell is covered in a material that looks and feels like Cordura, so it should wear very well, most quality backpacks are made of this material. The built-in pouch is a perfect size for the Guide 10 and all but the 12 volt car lighter adapter (which could be carried if you plug it in the regulator / converter and place the large end between the pouch and regulator. I find it is best to carry it externally if you need it. I fold the flap with the regulator / charger behind the solar panel when charging to keep the electronics in the shade. Eight loops (not bungee cord loops) all around the Nomad 7 allow many ways to attach the unit to a pack or sticks for charging. It was easy to attach to my Maxpedition pack with Paracord 550 and charge while I was walking.

How does it work? Surprisingly well! I did a lot tests in the Arizona sun in July and August it held up well to sun intensity and heat. This is our monsoon season which means clouds and rain once in a while (intermittent sunlight). The Nomad 7 charged 50 NiMH batteries in the Guide 10 very well under all kinds of sky conditions. Even an overcast sky where the panel did not cast a shadow it still recharged low NiMH batteries in about 6 hours. Using the USB adaptor charged low tech LG cellphone in an hour in normal sunlight (it also charged cellphone using 12V 4W lighter adaptor). So far I have been able to charge a digital camera, Kaito Voyager radio, VHF / UHF transceiver and the Guide 10 in reasonable times. It allows you to use your equipment more since you can now recharge in the field and not be so concerned with conserving battery power.

As far as the Rockout Speaker goes, for the size they sound very good with my player. They charge up in an hour with the Nomad 7 Solar Panel. If weight and volume are considerations in a backpack, then you might leave them behind and use earbuds. Otherwise, they are great to have along as a luxury item. If you are car camping, then they are a great asset to the camping experience, nice to listen to music without the earbuds.

I am delighted with the Nomad 7 / Rockout Speaker Combo. They are well engineered and perform very well. The Nomad 7 Solar Panel is perfect for light weight backpacking.

Love this unit and the fact it cost the same even with speakers made it even sweeter. Easy to use, incredibly flexible, and worked great on all my apple products I travel with. Key to best use is direct sun. Worked fantastic by pool and when camping, on the windshield of the car. Charges quick in direct sun. Even charges my iPad, albeit a little slower. Love the speakers. Great sound from a small package and last forever.

I was a bit nervous buying this thing due to the reviews but once I got It I'm extremely excited about it. I bought the rock out combo.. Nomad 7 and speaker kit.

Some of the people say the nomad 7 won't work with the iPhone 4, they must be re-traded or technology ignorant. I plugged in my phone and it's charging.. Simple as that. It seems very durable and well put together. I'm a rockclimber/ backpacker so in the summer of 2012 I'll put it to usefeild test it and write up a more in depth review. So far, I would recommend that everyone gets one or many for the 2012 zombie apocalypse!!

The speaks are very well put together as well, I plugged in my iphone and they actually are very loud.

Although I purchased this on sale in a big box store, I wanted to write a review of it because I'm so impressed. I purchased this to charge my iPhone and iPod Touch. After purchasing several competing products which didn't quite work, this one has the best design, utility, and solar panel size of any I saw. Admittedly I don't really use the speaker very often, and when I do it's just for my own listening, so I don't have any complaints about it; the speaker is solidly designed also and volume is not my key criteria in judging it. One tip is to get a long USB charging cable, so that the USB device you are powering is not also sitting in the sun. You can't simply set your smart phone in the sun without overheating it. In the case of the iPhone, it will auto-shutoff until it cools down. Been there, done that.

Pros:

--Providing a powered USB port was pure genius that few other makers seem to understand

--Great folding design with 2 solar panels

--Sturdy canvas and velcro shell

--Utility pocket that fits an iPhone or other smart phone

--Great ease-of-use; nothing to setup, just place it in the sun and plug in your USB-powered device

Cons:

--USB port should be deeper; cables plugged into the USB port feel like they are hanging out too far, although the connection is solid

Spal Magsafe 85w Car Adapter Charger for Macbook Pro 15" 17" Notebook, with Extra Usb Slot to Charge

Spal Magsafe 85w Car Adapter Charger for Macbook Pro 15' 17' Notebook, with Extra Usb Slot to Charge Ipad, iphone Etc Other DeviceAs an Amateur (Ham) Radio (K6OL) and Navy MARS (NNN0BJB) Operator, this car charger for my MacBook Pro is a "MUST HAVE." Now I don't have to worry about where the nearest power source will be at the end of my 10 hour battery life on my MacBook Pro. Now I'm able to use my MacBook Pro 'in the field' as long as I need. Once I plugged it in, I was pleasantly surprised to notice that there were NO power surges, or a noticeable drain (however sight) on the internal battery after it was plugged into my vehicle's power source.

Secondly, I was impressed that the order was processed and shipped promptly. I was even more pleasantly surprised to receive the package TWO days sooner than what I was initially informed by the automated system @ Amazon.com.

Frankly, I'm a bit perplexed when I recall my numerous conversations I've had with the Tech Support 'geeks' at APPLE and the APPLE STORE, and Best Buy. Not one person (including supervisors) knew anything about any product that would allow me to operate my MacBook from a 12 v power source OTHER than a 12 VDC to 110 VAC converter which is not only dangerous (fire hazard) but a complete waste of power.

Yes, this was my first order from Amazon. NO, I do not work for them nor was paid or had any incentives offered for my review.

I look forward to ordering through this venue again and hope I have the same experience.

Merry Christmas folks!

Ed

PowerFilm 5W F15-300N Foldable Solar Charger

PowerFilm 5W F15-300N Foldable Solar ChargerI received the charger just days after ordering, way to go Amazon! The units primary responsibility is to charge a combination of AA/AAA batteries for expedition flashlights, Steripens, GPS, Cameras, etc. But I am thrilled it has enough juice to recharge my flip-phone even while talking on it.

The Bottom line: It is currently the best value in its class on Amazon. The 15-300 at approx. 5 watts is more than twice as powerful as the competing powerfilm charger that only charges AA/USB. The 15-300 is also currently listing at $20 cheaper than the AA/USB model. With over 15 volts this little guy also has the ability to slowly recharge a car battery.

Hands down, no emergency supply kit should be without a solar charger: to re-charge digital communication devices, re-chargeable NiMh batteries, portable GPS units, even car engine batteries.

For me, the PowerFilm solar panel chargers more than fit the bill. Plus, PowerFilm is a U.S.A. company, and manufactures its solar panel chargers in the U.S.

What follows is a preliminary review, which I'll update with photos and more details in the coming months.

But, thus far, my use of the 5-watt PowerFilm (PF) foldable solar-panel charger has been so good, that I don't want to hold up information that may be useful to other people.

Test Frequency: so far, I've separately tested two 5-watt units, two times each.

Test Conditions: indoors, under mild sunlight through a lofty skylight, during peak sunlight hours in my region (11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.).

Battery Results: using a GoalZero AA/AAA battery re-charger (which connects to a PF unit, and is sold separately), each of my 5-watt PF units fully re-charged four of my (Eneloop) NiMH AA batteries in approximately 4.5 hours. To me, that's impressive. (I used a battery meter to measure and confirm the results, itself an indispensable device.)

Cell Phone Results: an Android 2.0 Motorola cell phone was successfully re-juiced with the 5-watt PF panel (with a separate cell phone adapter* connected to it). I didn't record the re-charge time, though, and will do so when I test the unit on an iPhone as well. Unless mistaken, I recall it taking about 4.5 hours as well, maybe less. *I use the "Philips DLM2264/17 PowerPack AC and DC Adapter for iPod/iPhone," model DLM2264/17; there are other adapters out there, this is just one.

Considering that even clear window glass (including untinted auto windows) can partially diminish the intensity of sunlight, I found that the PF units performed well under the above, indoor conditions. These units got the job done. (The GoalZero battery re-charger units are sometimes inconsistent, though.)

Caveat: under the above indoor conditions, I did have to move the solar panels several times, to keep them in line with the sun. But, if AC power is ever not an option, I'll be grateful to have any alternative power source. So, I have no complaints.

Under more optimal conditions (outside in direct sun, at a camp site, strapped to a backpack or bike rack, or through a larger window or on a dashboard on a sunny day), I would expect that this task would be leave-it-and-go convenient, and that re-charge times would be significantly faster. This is why I'll be conducting repeated, comparative tests in both stronger indoor and outdoor sunlight in my region's spring and summer seasons ahead.

Overcast Days: the PF solar panels are said to work, albeit at a much slower re-charge rate, even on overcast days. I've yet to test that claim, but will do so.

Daisy Chain: for higher watt output, I'll be connecting my PF solar panel units together, with a PF daisy chain, to see how much faster the re-charge times might be. (One of my PF panels is a 7.5-watt version, which was/is specially manufactured for, and sold via, Boy Scouts of America. The 5-watt unit has six rectangular panels; the 7.5-watt unit has 8.)

Other Solar Panel Chargers: I spent months researching various solar panels available. Most were priced beyond my budget, were too bulky for my portability needs, and/or had too few or sketchy user reviews. This is not to cast those other panel chargers in a negative light, because I've tried none of them myself. It's just that, based on my research, the PF units seemed a more reliable, affordable risk for me.

Affordability: Like most everything else these days, the price of PF panel chargers has gone up in the last year, at least on Amazon.com. My first purchase of a 5-watt unit, via Amazon.com, was less than the current price listed. My subsequent purchases of PF items were all at sale prices some at deep, deep discounts (as much as 70% off). So, keep an eye out. Hopefully, you'll find some good deals.

Conclusion: for price, compactness, lightness of weight, and reliability (so far), I could not be more pleased with the performance of the PF units. In fact, I'm thrilled.

In addition, someone I know uses the 5-watt PF unit in his car, leaving it on the dashboard during peak sunlight hours, to re-charge his cell phone and NiMh batteries. He is also very pleased with the results. (He uses the "BESTEK 75w DC AC Power Inverter...," model MRI711C-3.)

The PowerFilm Company: I've spoken directly with some of the PF staff. Each has been very helpful, polite, courteous, friendly, and well-informed. The company seems to be in this market for the best of reasons and principles: developers, engineers, and entrepreneurs who are designing and manufacturing an affordable, reliable, natural-energy efficient, applied technology that is eminently practical. Apparently, the company doesn't have a lot of frills, and a bare-bones-to-non-existent marketing budget. So I'm happy to help them spread the word.

Because, who knows, these devices could help get you out of a serious jam. At the least, they reduce your carbon footprint, and will make your life and work a lot easier and less disruptive during an electrical power outage. When most everyone else will be scrambling around without auxiliary power (to communicate by phone, to re-charge batteries for radios, flashlights, etc.), you'll be set.

Non-Affiliation: in no way am I associated with the PF company. I get no kickbacks for my review. I'm an individual customer who has paid, in full, for every one of my PF items. But, when a company and its people do such a standout, conscientious job to provide smart and much-needed products for ordinary folks, I'm sincerely grateful, and readily volunteer a good word.

Suggestions:

a) Be sure to do your homework before laying on unreasonable expectations of any solar panel recharger. For example, how much current does your particular device (cell phone, etc.) minimally need to re-charge? Will it need more than 5 watts? Because the more wattage needed, the bigger/heavier the solar panel typically will have to be. Or, you might have to daisy-chain two panel chargers or more to get the job done.

b) Various cell phones and other small digital devices require different adapters to connect to the PF solar panel chargers. Identify the right one(s) for your needs, check user reviews and, if need be, contact the manufacturer (whichever brand you're leaning toward) for assistance. This technology is still in a relatively early phase, and solar panels are still expensive, making it tough for developers to price down. In other words, don't expect these puppies to fly you to the moon and back. It's advisable to learn about the power needs of devices you use and depend on daily, so that when the convenience of AC power is not available, you can be as self-sufficient as your knowledge, know-how, and auxiliary tools and resources make possible.

c) Try out any solar panel charger as soon as you receive it, to make sure it has no defects and works for your needs.

Hope this helps folks decide which solar-panel chargers are best suited for their purposes and budgets.

Just opened up the box put it outside and measured .292 amps at around 19.8 volts. So it does at least 5 Watts, and its pretty light. I might try to come up with my own connector / cabling due to what seems an overly hefty cigarette lighter adapter + cable. I will also probably try to build or find an adapter that regulates the voltage down to 12 or 5 volts.

The label on the product lists it to be .3 amps at 15 volts, but there is a little more according to my nice fluke multi-meter. Very impressed, effective layout / configuration, looking forward to getting it in the field.

I bought this item at $76.95 on Amazon.com

Read Best Reviews of PowerFilm 5W F15-300N Foldable Solar Charger Here

I bought this solar panel to help keep my smartphone charged while on an extended backpacking trip (in Virginia in July). The bottom line is that it functions, but not very well, and instead of this panel you should buy the Goal0 12301 Nomad 7M Solar Panel for $8 more.

The good: The Powerfilm panel is light and fairly compact. It has a car charger adapter, so you can plug in anything you can plug in to your car.

The bad: To charge my phone, I had to attach the included car charger adapter, then find a separate car-charger-to-USB adapter, then a separate USB-to-micro-USB cable, so it's a fairly ridiculous contraption. Also, it's meant to run at 12V to charge batteries, so much of the potential is lost on phone charging. Even in full, bright sunlight, my phone takes about 4 hours to get a full charge (1500 mAh). It is impossible to charge for that long at once, though, because this panel really only works within a couple hours of solar noon. Morning or evening sun is useless. Setting up the panel to face toward the sun can be a pain, because it is made up of so many panels with nothing to stiffen them, but it's manageable. Forget trying to move it around while charging, though--there is little or no capacitor to buffer the current, and the slightest interruption in direct sunlight causes everything to reset, disrupting the charging and often causing the device being charged to spontaneously turn on. This also means that you shouldn't leave it out in intermittent sunlight, such as clouds moving past. Worse, sometimes when I unplug the phone it doesn't notice and drains most of its battery. Lastly, after a couple weeks of use the fabric that the panels attach to had started unraveling, and I wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing eventually falls apart.

The solution: my dad bought the Goal Zero 7W panel for the same purpose, and it solves almost all the above problems, plus charges much faster even in intermittent sunlight and while hiking through partially-shaded forest. True, it's somewhat larger and heavier, but definitely worth it.

Want PowerFilm 5W F15-300N Foldable Solar Charger Discount?

You must remember that this is not the best case scenario, if you are charging your phone or batteries on solar you must be away from a plug that works, correct? So when using solar you must do the math and find out what your needs are then your demand and find out what panel will meet that need. for example, and i am not an expert, i have a 7Ah battery i use for my amateur radio. This 5W panel puts out less than one Ah of power at optimal use so i am prepared to let the battery sit on charge all day in good sun light. if you have questions i advise you Google and call Powerfilm and they can give you official instructions on how to use this product to the fullest ability. I recommend that you over buy your demand so you have enough power when your panel is not in the best sun.

That said i love my panel and i went and got a second one. I charge Sealed lead acid batteries, amateur radios, FRS radios, 12 V AA/AAA battery charger, Iphone 3GS and Iphone 4, will update on Iphone 4S when i get it later this weekend. I recommend them to all my friends and to all who read my review. Just as everything else do your research and know what you are getting. The review that said he cant wait 4 hrs to charge his phone better start caring a gel cell battery so he can store power and charge when he can. just remember we are all dependent on power and we are spoiled that we can just plug in and have constant good power in the US but when you go out to the woods you have to understand you are compromising and using solar to fill the gap, you cant expect it to be the same as at your house in the city. Also i HIGHLY recommend you try the product before you NEED it. when you unbox set it on your patio and make sure it does what you need, if not send back to powerfilm and go bigger

12 Volt Automatic Battery Float Charger

12 Volt Automatic Battery Float ChargerI have 3 of these and have worked well for many years. The oldest one I own is about 10 years old. Never had a dead battery on the harley. I recently purchased another one, that will be used on my diesel pickup with 2 batteries. Never had a issue with these floating chargers. I added some pictures what they look like packaged. I have used this on a gel cell battery and had no issues.

I have 4 of these and use them on boat, lawn tractor, and classic car batteries. Keeps the batteries full without overcharging. Never a dead battery which also extends their life. The price is right, although I got mine on special at Harbor Freight. Did have one go bad a few years ago, but at that price no big deal.

PowerFilm R-28 28w Rollable Solar Panel Charger

PowerFilm R-28 28w Rollable Solar Panel ChargerThis unique, light-weight, easy to store charger is used to charge our computers, cell phones, ipods, etc., that can be plugged in the to solar panel charger via an adapter. We just drape it over the car, picnic table, or lay it on the ground with our electronics in the shade while it charges. However, one cannot use the computer and charge it at the same time. It is strong enough to charge a boat battery, its original purpose. I liked it so well, I purchased another one from Amazon at a definite savings. [Wish I had bought my first one here!]

I have bought two of these already and am in the process of ordering a third .i have used it only once in late day january sun on flat ground in northern california it worked great. i am building a portable power grid for laptops etc. it can also charge car batteries. these rolls are light weight and weather proof as opposed to weather resistant which the foldable powerfilm product line claims. not sure how big a difference there is but weather proof sounds better. be sure to get an "RA-6 Daisy Chain Accessory" by power film it turns two panels into one.

also this is a good charge controller "HQRP Solar Power Controller 10Amp 150W with Digital LED Display"

i got it here on amazon

and to top it off i got an:

PST-YD100W 100 Watts Adjustable Output DC/DC Converter from powerstream. ps, i had to upgrade the 16v capacitors to 35v and 50v because the 16 volt capacitors blew.

Input 9-15 VDC Also AC 110-240VAC for home or car 4 to 5.5 amps

output 12V, 15V, 16V, 18V, 19V, 20V, 22V, 24V single output, user adjustable Also 5V1A USB

this is a beauty it comes with ac and dc plugs numerous barrel adapters for laptops

Price $39.50

then i added this "Energizer XP18000 Universal AC Adapter with External Battery for Laptops, Netbooks, and More "

it must have 19v at 3.42 amps to charge so i am getting a third panel and a second daisy chain to make it work.

3 rollable 28 watt panels will put out 15.4 volts at 5.4 amps or 84 watts under best conditions

it boils down to a portable power grid a backpacker could take for around 8 lbs which i find acceptable if your laptop etc isnt too heavy.

ps the fact that many of these are sold on amazon with no negative reviews speaks strongly in favor of this product

This is a nifty little item, and we purchased one to use when we're out at the sports field with my kids.

One of these unrolled on the top of a collapsable shade canopy (oriented southward), and it gives us the ability to power 2-3 small 12V fans. It keeps the air moving, and everybody cooled/shaded/happy. You can even charge up your cell phone (the larger panel puts out almost 2A of current at 15VDC.

Roll it up after the game, and put it back in the box for the next weekend.

Recommended.

I had a good impression about PowerFilm Co , I was looking for a high quality portable solar panel to charge my battery bank and as an emergency charger for my car . I got PowerFilm R-28 28w Rollable Solar Panel Charger and i was very impressed . I hang it on a ladder and connect it to my ( Mediabridge High Output Dual USB Car Charger ) and connected my battery bank ( Anker Astro E4 13000mAh ) which has about 60 %, i was fully charged in 3 hours in a sunny day , you may check my first video .

Pros:

1very light

2a lot of juice comparing to the weight.

3easy to use

Cons :

too long ( 2 M ) sometimes very hard to mount on windy day.

I would definitely recommend it.

I'm planning to find a way to mount multiple powerfilm rollable panels on my car roof rack which will be used to charge my secondary battery later.

I will update you with more videos.

F900,DOD,H.264,WIDE LENS 120 DEG,1080P HD CAR BLACK BOX,CAR DRIVING DVR CAMERA,DASHBOARD CAMERA,4X

F900,DOD,H.264,WIDE LENS 120 DEG,1080P HD CAR BLACK BOX,CAR DRIVING DVR CAMERA,DASHBOARD CAMERA,4X ZOOM,12.0MP,2.4'LCDI bought this cam to use during custody exchanges with the ex because it is sleek and simple and doesn't stand out (we all gota protect ourselves somehow). I received it and laughed at the box since it's written in mostly Russian. Just found out that over 1,000,000 Russians have these in their cars, that's how they caught so many clips of the meteor crashing. Anyway, the camera works well, 1080p ISN'T as clear and defined as I thought it would be... seems more like 480p in a widescreen format but hey, I'm not looking to make home movies with it. In 1080p mode and doing a continuous 10 minute loop recording it records about 2GB per file (2 files needed). So at minimum a 4GB SD memory card should be bought with this.... I recommend just maxing it out to a 32 GB card so you don't ever have to worry.

If your car cigarette lighter olug power turns OFF with the ignition you can set this up to record loops and start the car and have it automatically START recording and turn the car off and have it automatically STOP recording.

The product is made of plastic so don't expect some durable camera or anything... it's made pretty cheaply but with a price at around 50 bucks on Amazon what do you really expect.

Overall it is a very good camera and it serves its purpose well but I don't think that it is actually 1080p or that it should be advertised as 1080p since it is DEFINITELY not clear like a 1080p video should be.

F900 Box arrives quickly with many accessories. Camera weighs next to nothing, has shiny toylike look and feel of cheap plastic. Even so, tiniest screws all around suggest carefully put together. First problem: how to get battery into camera no help from Manual or from examining camera body. Finally figured it goes in fattest part and resorted after much effort or fruitless fumbling to another rough method: use a knife blade to pry open line around case where battery clearly must go, put blade into crack and twisted and lo, cover slid back. This has to account for some misery among buyers. I like this camera, will keep it, now list its faults.

SD CARD a struggle to get into tight area blocked by handle and harder to pull out with not enough room for fingers. Suggest file a groove on card edge so fingernail can grip and yank out.

MANUAL for English section has pictures so tiny as unreadable, even though next section for ?Japanese language shows much larger picture printed with a clear part number. Had to flip back and forth over three sections to follow instruction. Solution: use 3.5X reading glasses. Easier than interpreting Manual, I decided to just fiddle with each button and toggle post to learn how to operate just enough for my purpose to set language to English (why can't they do this before shipping to avoid horror of opening menu to foreign text?), adjust date and time and resolution, and turn off irritating beep.

PHOTOS on computer look fuzzy and distorted from bowing.

VIDEOS look fair, though good for this price, have obvious distortion, such that every straight line has a bow to it.

TESTING. I played with camera at my desk and pointing out window till comfortable with button operation and screen display, then did live field test now in attached video. Press On/Off button on top to turn on, getting blue working light, A second later, upside down display of nifty red automobile quickly righted itself. Press down on slightly raised joystick on top to begin recording, proved by red dot on screen.

For second test, I plugged into car battery for power. Camera did not turn on when engine started. It started recording when On/Off button pressed, eliminating need to again press down on Joystick.

Date and time appear thoughtfully at lower left corner in large white font. Time countdown appears upper right during recording, though oddly not visible on computer playback.

RECORDING, press joystick forward turns on Night Light recording -seems to make no quality difference except to put reflective glare on window. Joy to Left or Right zooms jerkily in or out with significant range on street and closeup desktop images. Zooming from 1X toward 4X got more grainy and fuzzy, obvious in video playback. To start or stop a recording, pressing the Stop Button seems to do same as pressing Joystick. SCREEN goes blank for a second or two at end and at start of recording. Zoom function useful by allowing closeup recording to enlarge detail on any object. [cc see house number and garage lamp in my sample video] In car test plugged into cig lighter bottom right of display showed flashing sign of power plug camera did not turn on or off with engine. I needed to press Power button, and once pressed, it started recording within a couple seconds.

Handheld test: DAYLIGHT recording has faint bluish tint and near objects not sharp. NIGHTTIME recording atest shows camera can record object with light on it and can get some detail within about 18 feet. At night it failed to show green or red or yellow color of street and car lights except as white spots. Moving camera slowly caused light to streak.

Car driving test: DAYLIGHT recording fairly sharp, showing wide view. Later playback confirmed cloudy day recording produces much better video, almost impressive. Street lights distinctly red, yellow or green though on playback appear pulsing or shimmering.

PLAYBACK, press Forward Arrow button on top. Use joystick to navigate thumbnails of combined video and photo images. Down goes forward, Up goes back. Press joystick to play. For still images fullscreen, Up and Down move backward or forward. Recording quality can show distinct letters on license plates when close, even better enlarged during playback on computer monitor. Camera lens makes nearly true sizes, without apparent stretching or squeezing image as do other cheaper cameras tested by me. I left camera in 720P setting for my tests, though maybe better if set to "1080". Camera produced huge AVI file that filled my monitor screen. Camera assigned my 4pm video in afternoon daylight number 164101 and my 4am video in dark night number 0434001, suggesting video naming may relate to time of day (16 as 16 hours on 24-hr clock or 4pm, and 04 as 4am), then 001, 002 for sequence.

BATTERY takes bizarrely long time to charge. After 5 hours mine only charged with 2 bars out of full max 3. Overnight still not full. And it wears down fast.

CONCLUSION? Good carcam for amount money paid and would recommend it as not too hard to use, producing clear enough images and good audio on computer playback. Showed sharp image of other vehicles on street, often making plate readable. Sound loud enough when playback on computer though barely can hear from camera speaker. My audio samples had a frequent grinding noise, not sure if camera or my car. Slight blue tinge to recording. Jerky zoom not a real concern. An important feature for fighting a traffic signal ticket, camera showed show true-enough color of street light during day (though poor color at night), Mount on windshield problematic as would not stay attached, while grip for camera does not allow easy positioning to film and view display at same time.

I owned this for literally about 30 days. That's how long the product lasted before it broke.

Something electronic inside prevented the camera from turning on again. It wouldn't work with battery or usb power.

I enjoyed it while I had it. It definitely took some getting used to having a screen on my windshield. You can't close the LCD with the camera on. This will shut the camera off immediately.

The mount broke from over-tightening... which i needed to do to keep it from bouncing on every little bump.

This worked great while it lasted. The car charger stopped charging my phone after a week, and the part of the dock that tightens the suction cup broke off randomly while I was driving. Do not buy. I wish there was a dock like this that didn't suck.

Maxell P-2 2-G Rechargeable Back-Up Battery Pack

Maxell P-2 2-G Rechargeable Back-Up Battery PackThere is a great deal of confusion about what models of iPod work with this unit. I have the 60GB video iPod and it works fine. 15 hour flight to China and no problems at all power to spare, even watching video most of the time. The "clip on arrangement does not fit the video iPod but that isn't too big a problem.

I was disappointed when Belkin discotinued their Tune Juice, a very small external power pack that used a regular 9 volt (smoke alarm size) battery. I assume it must not have worked with all the newer iPods.

As a substitute, I bought this Maxell one. It's OK, but there are two complaints. 1) It's bigger than an iPod and with 4 AA batteries, it's considerably heavier. 2) It costs around $25.00 because it includes a really awkward collection of plastic holders, clamps, belt cilps and doodads which, for me are all totally unnecessary. You don't use a battery pack while hiking or at the gym, you use it on a plane during long flights small and light are the important features. However, I don't see many alternatives at the moment so, I'm happy with reservations.

I ordered this one for traveling purpose. I have a G5 60G video ipod. I just got the backup battery pack today and noticed on the package that it was not compatible with "G5 Video". I called the Maxell tech support and found out it is compatible but the clip case is not compatible with G5 video. Even the manual came with the battery pack shows that G5 video is one of the ipods NOT compatible with this pack. After talking with the tech support, I opened it and tried it with my G5 60G video ipod and was relieved to find out it works. The clip on case doesn't fit with G5 60G ipod but if you don't need the case, it does work as backup battery.

This is a great product. In spite of some reviews it DOES work too with the 80 GB iPod Video [I've got three of them from 2006 & 2007 and the Maxell performs splendid with all three]. It doesn't matter if you use rechargeable or disposable AA batteries.

When you switch the power button on, your iPod switches automatically on too: I think this is the -safest and probably most effectiveway to use this device.

On the matter of not charging the internal battery of the iPod: I think this is fantastic! The internal battery has only a limited amount of [dis]charge cycles and is spared this way, thus lenghtening your iPod's lifespan. And: research has indicated that the kind of battery built in iPods age considerably when kept fully charged [like in a dock, or connected to a charger]: with 'The Pack' you can keep the internal battery permanently 50% charged, a state in which the internal battery does NOT age!

But there's more. With two good sets of 4 NiMH [say 2500 mAh a piece] batteries and a charger, or with disposables, you can -if you wish tokeep your iPod mobile non-stop without the annoying charging sessions which, in my opinion, shorten the lifetime of an iPod considerably too when you do this via your pc. One can read so many stories about dying iPods when they are connected to the computer, supposedly many things can go wrong during this procedure. And when you're in a car, plane or at home: who cares about the extra weight of the battery-pack.

Last but not least: my iPod works much longer on one set of 4 AA 2500 mAh rechargeables than on one charge of the internal battery. Ten hours of video is no problem. On average, with varied ways of using [music, games and video] the battery-pack works -within a period of days when you use NiMH's, they have a very high selfdischarge rate24 hours!

Update: it does work with my 1G iPod Touch 32GB too. However, the internal battery of the Touch has to be fully charged!

Want Maxell P-2 2-G Rechargeable Back-Up Battery Pack Discount?

I have an iPod classic (video) 80GB. I originally bought the battery pack for my 30GB iPod, but it kicked the bucket before I could try it. So I was hoping it would work with the gen. 6 models.

I'm pleased to report that it worked well, at least in initial tests. It fit into the sleeve snugly and the supplied battery to iPod cord fit well into the iPod. When I turned on the battery back-up, the charging light on the iPod increased to full. I'd imagine that it would decrease as the AA batteries are drained so you'll know if you have to put in new AA batteries.

Remember that this isn't a re-charger but rather a battery extender. If you allow the iPod battery to drain, this won't ressurect it. So if you're type A, you might want to pack an extra set of batteries in case the battery gauge gets too low for comfort.

Kuryakyn Electrical Power Point 1" Handlebars 1423

Kuryakyn Electrical Power Point 1' Handlebars 1423It was very easy to install and looks good. It even in includes the heating element to light cigarettes. I purchased this project to power my GPS and it served that purpose.

This mounts on 1 inch handlebars, and fit my Honda perfectly. This is good quality chrome, not some cheap plastic thing with a couple of molecules thick of shiny metal sprayed on. The wiring was able to reach from near the clutch lever on the left all the way down to the battery area. It's supplied with a 10 amp fuse in the disconnect plug. You may or may not be able to run a compressor with that.

Strong points.........

It has a disconnect plug that matches the same plug my compressor and trickle charger uses. So I just installed the one from the compressor and use it for all three devices (won't ever use more than one at a time.)

Besides being able to put the clamp where ever you want, you can also swivel the unit horizontally by using a screw.

Best of all, it looks great.
