this is outback's top of the line solar charge controller. While a little pricy, it works as advertised. Wrings the most power from solar panels, and accepts voltages up to 150V. This allows use of much smaller wire for the run from the panels to the controller. The 10AWG wire I'm using cost a fraction of the 2AWG I would need without this feature. What I really love about this machine is that while it has incredible features and almost endless possible adjustments, I can just hook up 4 wires, tell it my battery is 12 volts, and I'm up and running. No fuss at all. Have three of these feeding the same battery bank, and will probably have a couple more as I add more solar panels to my off grid system. Temps here have been over 100 f. all week and the controllers haven't missed a beat. This product is worth the cost.

This unit increases the effective energy harvest from a solar panel system by about 30%. Bottom line, less panels more effective, more efficient more environmentally friendly.

The Outback FM80 is the real deal. I have it hooked up to my off grid system and it does what it is suppose to do. Find more power from the solar panels. Highly recommended. Very happy to own it.

It does what it says it does. Im happy with the unit and very happy it was tested before being sent overseas to me.

This has the worst installation instructions I have ever read. The instructions state the use of a "PV combiner" which they sell at extra cost is required upstream of the controller. The controller itself only accepts one pair of wires coming in which means panels MUST be wired in series before coming to the controller. None of this was revealed before opening the box and reading the pathetic instruction. In fact, I was told multiple times, before buying, I could bring the wiring in parallel directly to the controller.

The charging algorithm is never discussed and based on comments elsewhere on the internet is poor for low charging current as when batteries are maintained at a fairly high state of charge. I would never buy this again and feel trapped with this relatively expensive, huge, heavy device. If you want lots of LEDS however, this might be for you.
