Mediabridge High Output Dual USB Car Charger For iPad and iPhone (Dual Port High Output Design: 1.0

Mediabridge High Output Dual USB Car Charger For iPad and iPhoneAlthough I would've liked this product a little more if the amperage for BOTH ports were 2.1, this product is the best car USB car charger out there in my opinion (as of 5/13/2012). High output, and two ports instead of perma-mounted cables, which gives you options for what kind of USB to use (mini, micro, etc). Although I don't own any devices that would require 2.1 amps (such as the iPad), the high amperage allows my phone to charge faster than even the one wall charger that the phone originally came with, WHICH, by the way, isn't the case ALL the time, but it is for me (Motorola Razr Maxx). No, I don't know what the max amperage my phone pulls, but the high amperage shaves about an hour (from four hours) off a full charge. It depends on the device and how much its allowed to pull from the charger. For those people who are worried whether or not the charger is too "powerful," it's probably not, if it's a USB device you're trying to use. While the VOLTAGE (which will always be 5V ±5%, hopefully) is sent by the charger to the device, the AMOUNT of power is PULLED by the device itself. Think of drinking water. You're going to drink as much as you NEED, regardless of how much water is available.

Edit (2/9/2013): So, after some use, this charger seems to have broken :-( I was pretty excited about this product in the beginning, as very few car chargers have such high amperage on top of multiple ports. However, it broke. With moderate use, it stopped functioning as it should in about 2 months. A bit late on the update, but I was reminded of this product by another review I was writing. So, my initial rave review is now down. I don't know if this is the case for all of these, or if I just received a lemon, but there you go with my experience with this product. All that stuff I said about how this stuff works is still correct, though, so I'd advise anyone looking for a charger keep that in mind.

This is a little bulky, and I knew this when I bought it. Altho it is a little smaller than I thought it would, which is good. I bought it to be used in my work vehicle where I need power.. plenty of it. I charge specialized meters for testing communications cables, use an iPad out in the field along with a Kindle Fire, iPhone, and other things that can be charged thru usb. This works flawlessly with everything i've thrown at it, and a couple of techs are looking into getting one for their work vehicle also. This charger almost always has something plugged into it to be charged up, if not two things at once, and this does not let me down. Easily 80% of the work day it is being used to charge at least one thing, if not two.

The packaging was very well done, simple enough instructions, and is a nice tight fit in the holder. Not sloppy at all and stays put. I also like how well they marked the two ports for 2.1 and 1.0. Very easy to see and read. The pictures that another reviewer posted are exactly the way mine arrived also. I was very impressed with the packaging.

Pros... you just read them :)

negatives: none

I plan on buying a couple more.. one for my personal vehicle, and one to keep with the laptop, and a couple of guys at work like it well enough to order one for themselves. I highly recommend this. You won't disappointed

Based on the reviews and product description of this device, I was lead to believe that it would charge an Android phone at full AC power mode (not USB 0.5amp mode). Based on that information I ordered several of these for a medium-scale deployment of devices at my work.

Long story short: This device will not charge an Android device in AC power mode. As soon as you plug it in, the Android device enables USB charging mode.

I'm hoping that I can figure out a way to crack the unit open and short the middle pins (which forces AC charging mode for Android devices on other car chargers)...

I'm giving it two stars for excellent build quality and packaging.

Update: I figured out how to disassemble the unit and it turns out to be quite easy.

The high build quality of this unit actually enhances it's ability to be disassembled, modified and reassembled. You can do it all with a single flat-bladed screwdriver (and a soldering iron). Resassembly doesn't require any superglue like some of the other units that are popular to mod.

Once the unit was disassembled, I looked on the back of the circuit board and found 2 places where there were 4 small pins in a row. I put a small blob of solder across the middle pins on each of them and reassembled the whole unit.

I went out to the car to test it and sure enough, all my android devices see it as an AC charger and start charging in high-speed mode.

I will add one star to my rating due to the excellent build quality enabling an easy modification.

Works as described. Can fully charge iPad (2.1 amp) at the fast speed (3 min/%) while also charging my cell phone (.9 amp). Apple devices are finicky; you have to plug in both cords, then connect to the iPad for 5 min to charge and only then connect to the other device. Otherwise the iPad stops charging. But when it is hooked up properly, it does both at full charge.

Be careful, even though many dual USB charging devices (both car and electric) say they can charge multiple devices at the same time, it usually doesn't charge the i-device at FULL speed. Make sure the device provides at least 3.0 amps total output...most will just provide 2.1 amp total, so if two items are charging at the same time they each only get 1 amp.

This is the only adapter I could find that offered 2.1 amp and 1.0 amp simultaneous charging. Most other adapters will drop the 2.1 amp port to 1.1-1.5 amps when the other port is used.

I have been using it for several weeks now and I'm very happy with this purchase. Have used with iPhone 4s and iPad (3rd Gen) connected at the same time and the charger works great.

In addition, the adapter seems to be very high quality. Sturdy plastic and spring loaded steel pins. I was also happy to see that the adapter is smaller than it appears in the photos. Very reasonable size for the specs.

I wouldn't trade this charger for any other charger on the market regardless of brand or price. Highly recommended.
