DEWALT DCF880HL2 20-Volt Li-Ion 3.0 Ah 1/2-Inch Impact Wrench Kit with Hog Ring

DEWALT DCF880HL2 20-Volt Li-Ion 3.0 Ah 1/2-Inch Impact Wrench Kit with Hog RingI used the impact wrench to upgrade my springs, struts, front/rear sway bars, end links, rotors and brake pads. It was able to break my strut bolts which is torqued to 129ft lbs with ease. I have yet encounter a bolt on my car that it cannot break loose. But I don't expect this to break bigger bolts like the one for the wheel bearing for example. The impact wrench made a huge difference with the installation, it made it so much easier and much less back breaking. I tried other compacts including the mikata 12v, 18v and dewalt 18v before I settled on this one.

Other observations:

1. The 3 leds is a huge improvement over the older 18v model which only had 1 led. It's much brighter now and stays on for a period of time before turning off.

2. The battery is much smaller then the ni-cad version, roughly 40% smaller. The battery also has a battery level indicator which comes in very handy for someone that only use the tool once in a awhile. For example, if you want to change your wheels, you can quickly check the battery to see if it still have enough charge for the job. I changed 3 sets of wheels and still have half the battery left.

3. Another huge improvement over the 18v version is that its alot easier to take off sockets with the hog ring. The 18v was a pain to put on and take off sockets with its detent pin. The 20v version comes with either the hog ring (DCF880HL2) or detent pin (DCF880L2), make sure to get the hog ring version.

4. The compact size really helps when you don't have a lift and is working with limited space underneath the car with jack stands.

5. I decided to get the 1/2 inch version rather then the 3/8 version because I had a 3/8 hand wrench head breaking on me when trying to undo the lug nuts on my car. The 1/2 version also has a higher torque rating as well.

6. If you are thinking about getting the 2 piece combos (usually a drill + impact driver) because its cheaper (roughly $200) don't do it. Not only is the battery smaller but the bundle tool is a impact driver not a impact wrench. You will need to put a hex to socket adapter on it to make it a wrench. But by doing so you are extending the overall length, negating the advantage of having a compact. In addition the torque rating on the impact drivers are much lower. The Makita 18v I tried had problem loosening a slightly over torqued lug nut.

If you are looking for a cordless impact wrench for doing work on your car, this may be your best friend.

The 1/2" chuck and the hog ring make it easy to swap sockets. This newer model also features 3 LEDs that stay lit near the chuck which is handy.

The battery also contains a power meter so you know whats going on. The wrench is about as light as any cordless drill and very easy to use.

Now you need to do your research, I primarily will use this tool for swapping wheels and minor suspension work. It will only impact 150 lbs ft max. So if you need more than that you will have to choose the larger model that will do 300lbs ft of torque. However that model is also 3x heavier and much larger.

So far, it handled all my wheel swaps on CARS no issue. If you have some beast SUVs or trucks where someone impacted the lugs in you may have an issue the first time until you re-torque them properly. Kit comes with a charger, impact, and two batteries and a case, perfect for track days etc. I swapped 12 tires, removing and replacing and the battery still had full charge.

I can't speak for longevity but, so far for the money, as long as you are using the tool within its limits it's an amazing value.

I can now rotate tires 9 minutes per side.

When I got this impact, I wasn't sure what to expect since it was the low torque version. (150 ft lbs vs 300) However, I was pleasantly surprised at the amout of power it has for such a light weight tool. I think a few reviews here say they used it to break loose wheel lugs. In my situation, I had to break them loose with a 4 way first, and then they spun right off which saved a lot of time, of course this was a 1977 dodge 3/4 ton truck with lugs exposed to the elements.

This tool did however remove cab mount bolts from another old dodge pickup (1977 as well) which is simply amazing considering I live here in the salt belt. The did not have to be touched before it zipped them off like nothing. All in all, it is a great tool that has a great battery life as well as a quick charging. I would highly reccomend this to anyone looking.

I WORKED ON ROTATING TIRES ON ALL FOUR OF MY VEHICLES AND THE BATTERY STILL HAS 2 FULL BARS AND IS GOING STRONG, DIDN;T EVEN HAVE TO TOUCH THE EXTRA BATTERY. YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH PURCHASING THIS IMPACT WRENCH. WELL WORTH THE MONEY......
