Belkin Micro USB Auto Charger 5VOLT 1A

I was a bit disappointed by this charger, as I had used both the palm pre car charger and a cheapo ebay charger with my HTC evo, and the phone recognized both of those as 1A chargers and displayed as being charged by the AC adapter. I bought this charger expecting as much, as it is rated at 1A and I liked the low profile of it.

Unfortunately, the phone recognizes it as a USB port and defaults to charging at 500mA, which is a much slower charge and I cannot use the Navigation for extended periods without losing battery. I have heard that just altering the cable or getting certain cables will remedy this and draw the full 1A, I just wish I wouldn't have to go find all this stuff. The design is very good though, no problems using either of the ports on my 2006 Mini.

I saw this charger identified as working with the IPhone. Well, maybe an earlier version, but it doesn't work with the IPhone 4. I contacted Belkin and here's their response (didn't edit, this is exactly the email I got from the company):

While this is the exact thing I have been looking for, I was disappointed to discover it does not work in ALL cars. More so, I am disappointed to discover it works in most cars but mine. I drive a 2007 Toyota Corolla, and the Belkin Micro USB Auto Charger does not work what so ever. Something about the design of the cigarette lighter that does not work with this small profile. I have tried it also in a Kia Spectre, and a Lincoln Zephyr, and it worked flawlessly. I'll keep it around to see if it will work in my next vehicle.

As others have mentioned, this charger may be rated at 1A but it only provides 0.5A since it is sensed as a USB port by the phone. This is the case for all three types of phones we have in our house. HTC EVO, HTC Hero and Palm Pre.

I'm rating this item at 2 stars because it is advertised (and it's primary purpose is) to provide 1A of current for rapid charging. Which it fails to do for most devices.

I may try the resister mod. I will update my review with the results to help others, if I do.
