have used these on several cruises and external runs and have always felt they are lacking in the supposed distance. the poor reception on cruises is explainable by boat metal, walls and multiple decks. If we were on the top say 3 or 4 decks it was ok, but from a mid cabin to an upper deck these were insufficient to be usable. I also went for runs in open country, some of the runs were on an almost direct line of site, albeit with a few trees, and the maximum usable range was only about 2 miles, not the 12 miles suggested. (actually it was probably closer to 1.5 miles as the crow flies) . I am now looking for a better radio to address these shortcomings. 1. multiple users on cruises using radios and not be able to find an open channel, and 2. distance limitation.Read Best Reviews of Midland LXT80 12-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) Here
Even if it was free it would be a piece of junk. My son and I tried every channel at a range of three blocks and not once could we hear or understand each other. Save your money. Don't buy it.Want Midland LXT80 12-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) Discount?
I thought the price was right but within a few days they started to give a motor boating sound when receiving. Replaced the batteries with new ones but made no difference. It is strange that they both started doing this at the same time on all channels. Very difficult to understand the voice with the putt, putting background sound. One of these picks up every little sound, and the other barely works when you press the mic button and yell without stopping to take a breath.
