Hi all, When i received the radio it seemed to be defective right out of the box. The dual band mode did not work correctly as I got some sort of strange pulsating noise when selected. there was also a strange electrical noise while transmitting. I also noticed some sort of "birdie" on 442.000. It would seem that the uv-5re plus's have various manufacturing defects that are inconsistant. The headset was also defective. It was a very aggravating experence.

I just received my radio and it is well worth the money. I had to get online to find out how to program the memory channels which turned out to be very easy. The manual that you get is not very informative but there is so much info online about these radios. Make sure you get the USB cable to program your radio.

I ordered this radio more as a curiosity than anything else and was I surprised. I'm not a licensed HAM and I know better than TX on those frequencies. That said this is an unbelievable product for the price. As far as TX on this unit (FRS & MURS freq.) it blows through. I monitor local public service traffic mostly. The FM is great ! I use it while I'm working in the yard, listen to FM radio but I have a priority channel set so I can listen to that too. At the beach I set the priority to Marine VHF and listen to the harbor traffic or local shipping traffic.

Yes I'm a "hobbyist" but for the tremendous flexibility of this radio how could you match it? I'm studying for my Novice ticket now and I'll be able to talk to all the 2m locals.

Seems to be well built. Every thing works. Can't beat the price! A lot more on those bands than I thought. Can hear Fire dispatch, Ambulance dispatch. Easy to program with Chirp. Have talk on 2 meter band with no problem. My call sign is KK4CKT. You need to have a Ham ticket to talk on 2 meters.
