GTMax Retractable Rapid Car Charger with IC Chip for Virgin Mobile LG Optimus V VM670 by GTMax

GTMax Retractable Rapid Car Charger with IC Chip for Virgin Mobile LG Optimus V VM670 by GTMaxThis review should apply to all similar chargers, regardless of what battery-charging plug is used to match with a particular phone. In my case, I bought it for the micro USB plug that mates with the LG Optimus V or S phones.

Likes:

Cord is thin and very flexible, unlike the coiled bulky ones, which are much stiffer.

Cord retracts so that micro USB plug inserts firmly into body of charger, leaving no dangling cord, ergo less bulky storage in glove compartment or floor console.

Cord extends up to 40 inches, about the same as coiled cords on my three other chargers when stretched to the max, but there is no "pulling effect" that can be strong from the coiled ones. There are spring stops on the winding mechanism, so once pulled out there is no continuous tension on the cord and micro plug.

Dislikes:

Somewhere on some description for apparently this same unit, I read that the cord was 5 ft long. I bought this ASSUMING a 5' cord, but got 40". However, I cannot fault those vendors like this one who did not say how far the cord extended. I spelled "assume" in my assumption! Nonetheless, 40" is sufficient for my use. Be wary if you find a vendor that claims a 5' cord: phone or write and have him physically verify the cord length, as I presume that all these retractable cord units are made by the same manufacturer and simply branded in accord with the seller/distributor's wishes.

A Risk:

If one does not hold onto the cord or plug when retracting, and merely pushes the retract button, the force of the sudden stop could conceivably pull the cord right out of the micro plug. Reasonable handling should give long life.

Having recently purchased this, I cannot comment on the charging performance, but if I run into any problem I'll update this review. I can only assume that the unit will perform OK over a reasonable time period.

April 15, 2012 Update: Charger has been working fine, with no problems.

August 6, 2012 update: Still works fine, but it's charging output is just barely enough to keep the current charge on the battery when you are using the phone for road navigation with GPS on and screen on max brightness. My Motorola charger with micro usb plug gives more output, but has a coiled cord that has the disadvantage of the typical coiled cord.

I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting much from a charger costing under $3.00 but for the price I figured what why not. Bought two so each car would have one. Both do what they're designed to do and charge the phone, so I'm happy. I'm also pleased that they are built surprisingly well with a couple different textures on the plastic. It's worth mentioning that the first two photos on this product page are NOT the charger in question, but the others are.

I really like the retractable cable. Cuts down on mess and stores in a cubby nice and tidy. No cord taking up space. The one downside is the cord itself is very thin and seems like it could kink or otherwise be damaged easily. I'll just have to be careful.

This is a cheap basic charger and what more do you want, just needed another spare charger for the extra family vehicle. Got it in perfect condition, plugged into the outlet in my car then into the phone and worked first time. What more do I want. It fitted and worked on my LG Optimus V
