Duracell 852-1807 1,800 Watt Five Outlet Rechargeable Power Source

Duracell 852-1807 1,800 Watt Five Outlet Rechargeable Power SourceBought this recently from Amazon for $180.00 I will say its worth about that. I tried a few high wattage things in it like a hair dryer, Iron, coffee maker, just to see how long I could use it. These are things I could never think of using in a standard 1500VA UPS, (Which I have for comp and such) All of the devices ran well, the hair dryer probably sucked it down the fastest, (Set high 1500watts), lasted aout 7 minutes before the warning started going off. The unit ran about 5 more minutes on medium setting before the battery dropped to 20 percent. The battery did recover to 50% after turning off dryer, so high wattage appliances I think are a bit much for the batteries to output continuously.

The unit is heavy, about 60 pounds. For the money, I would buy again. I figure I should get about 6 hours on a computer with a flat panel attached. For most short power outages, this will get you by for a few necessities. Anything longer you will have to go generator.

The description reads as though you can use it for a fridge and other high wattage appliances, which I guess is true, but misleading as I would imagine a fridge would kill it in about 10 minutes or less.

All in all glad, I was able to purchase for the $180.00. If nothing else you can dry your hair when the power is out, and make coffee, without having to hook up the generator.

UPDATE:

So I wanted to update this review. The unit gave out after about 18-24 months. Cant tell exactly when it lost its capacity but it would last maybe 5 minutes on light load. I took the time to tear it apart and found three 12 volt 17ah SLA batteries wired in parallel. They were pretty much useless. Tried to bring them back but as most here know once an SLA battery gets near end of life it is almost impossible to get them back from the dead even with a good quality desulfator. I got lucky and found 3 new Panasonic replacements for $25ea on EBAY and installed those. (A good quality SLA battery in this range is usually about $70 bucks each). Unit is back up and running like new. I would assume most people would not attempt this nor probably should they. High risk of shock even with the unit unplugged. And many parts to disassemble/reassemble. If you do attempt, take lots of pictures as you break down and be carefull of wires. Doesnt matter how long or how many times you have handled electricity, only takes once.

UPDATE: After a few months sitting in the corner being charged, I tried it out today. Apparently there's at least one bad cell; a 600w load exhausts the batteries in about 45 seconds. So I revise my rating to ``piece of junk,'' niche or no niche. It needs a much better quality control on the batteries.

ORIGINAL Post:

Pros : about three times the run times of a comparable capacity UPS, based on battery capacity (3 x 17AH, vs typical 2 x 9AH in a 1500VA UPS). Maybe nice to have around to switch to when a regular UPS runs down in a long power outage. I got mine for $180, which would be a good deal in the UPS market. The current $380 would be too high for me.

Cons : a lot of cons. It's hyped as if it's going to help out in the gas generator alternative market, but has nowhere near the capacity you'd need in terms or runtimes. It could run a sump pump for an hour maybe (one cycle of my 1/2hp sump pump runs it down to 80% of charge, so 5 cycles would run it out completely), which isn't going to help much. For all this stuff, like refrigerator and so forth, you just need a gas generator.

The transfer time (80ms) is too slow for a computer when the power goes out. A UPS is ten times faster. No power conditioning.

Really heavy. A woman is not going to like dealing with it. Handles are convenient for the weight though. A Honda EU2000i 2000w gas generator weighs the same.

There's no powered-off charge-the-battery-anyway mode, and it consumes 10w when plugged in. Can only be powered off when not plugged in, so you'd have to establish a routine to keep the battery charged if it's not in regular use.

So perhaps its niche is as a backup UPS when the power has been off too long for the regular UPS. Plug the computer into this, then. When the power comes back, charge it back up and put it back in the closet.

It's a nice product, just one with no obvious use.

Get a gas generator for the sump pump and the refrigerator.

This item is a piece of junk. Mine gave up after a month, and it is not even used much, just lying in a corner being charged. What is worse, their customer service is more than a piece of junk too. They diagnosed the problem as a battery failure. Since this unit is heavy and I would have to spend over $50 to ship it, I requested that they just send me a new battery and I return the old one to them. But, no! they want the whole unit back. What happened to the customer is always right? And this item is not even worth $100, much less the stated price. For one, it wont hold a charge long, and it breaks easily. A small electric generator is a much, much better value. My advice to you, do not patronize anymore Duracell or Xantrex, their products are junk and their customer service a joke.

REVIEW NOVEMBER 11/11/2011: PERFORMANCE & BATTERY LIFE OF THE DURACELL POWERSOURCE 1800

I have had this Xantrex (Duracell) Powersource 1800 since October of 2009. I bought it as a Duracell branded Powersource 1800, and there has been no failures with the unit for two years... until now. It was a great unit, but a transformer failed, and now the whole unit is non-repairable. The batteries are fine, but the transformer design is specific to the unit, and Xantrex will not repair it. They will give you a new unit at a substantial discount. However, for my application, it really worked reliably for two years.

Application: The unit powers an M-53 Zoeller cast iron 1/3 HP submersible sump pump, which is used as a secondary back-up pump to the primary M-53 Zoeller pump. I It pumps water through a vertical pipe 10 feet upward and 6 feet horizontally out of the house to an exterior drain pipe, at 2100 Gal/hour 35 Gal/min. I have two units for two houses... both perform in a similar manner. However, one of the units failed, and is the subject of this review after two years of service.

I have had frequent power failures in heavy rain storms, and the unit has functioned reliably with more than expected back-up battery time. I test it once a week to keep it fresh, and typically, the main pump runs 7 seconds under normal situations, and back-up sump pump runs 8 seconds during a back-up duty cycle to clear out the water in the sump pit. At that rate, here are the documented duty cycles for my home sump pump application:

Back-up Duty Cycle #1: Low Demand Situation Winter: In a no-rain storm situation, the back-up pump runs 8 seconds every 30 minutes. I have a lot of water seepage from surrounding farm land. At this duty cycle, the battery has been tested to last 24 hours running the back-up pump. See note about charge indication vs. actual usable power during the pump run.

Back-up Duty Cycle #2: Normal Light Demand Situation Summer: Without any extensive rainfall, the typical demand would be to run 8 seconds every 20 minutes. This is the normal base condition at my home most of the time. At this cycle, the battery lasted 18 hours.

Back-up Duty Cycle #3: Medium Demand Situation Summer-Fall: In a medium rain storm, the main sump pump runs 8 seconds every 15 minutes. The battery was tested to run more than 14 hours at that cycle.

Back-up Duty Cycle #4: High demand, heavy rainstorm Spring/Fall Rains Situation: The back-up pump runs 8 seconds every 5 minutes, and the battery was tested to run 6 hours.

Back-up Duty Cycle #5: Extreme Demand, heavy rain situation any season: The back-up pump will run 8 seconds every 2 minutes. At this cycle, the battery lasted 4 hours to its unusable power level.

Notes on charge capacity: Even though the Duracell (Xantrex) 1800 charge capacity read out will indicate a certain % of charge that is left in the battery discharge between cycles, you have to allow that there is less actual usable battery power present to handle the initial current surge and amount of power consumed during the pump start-up and run period. For example, if the indicator reads that there is a 50% battery capacity while the pump is not running, when the pump calls for power to run, the actual discharge rate will dip to 40% and then to 30% as the pump continues to run. When the pump stops, the charge indication will read 40%, and then resume to 50% after one minute.

As the battery becomes weaker, this same charge vs. actual usable power span will be repeated at lesser charge levels. The battery may not be reliably usable at the 30%-25% charge indication level... it may start the pump running, but may shut it down as the initial power surge demand and load continues during the first 2 seconds.

FAILURE INFORMATION: November, 2011

After running for two problem free years, the unit suddenly failed during a routine weekly test. One of the four transformers in the inverter failed, and it is not replaceable. The three 17 amp batteries are fine, and the unit will pass through AC power to the pump and charge the batteries. But the unit will no longer auto switches to supply back-up power, and flashes a E03 error code (can't meet power demand). This unit is now useless... as it can't be repaired since the transformer and support electronics are of a special design for this unit, and are not available from any electronics supplier. Xantrex will not repair the unit.

However, they will send you a new unit a discounted price. It appears that over time, the initial surge of the sump pump weakens the support electronics, specifically the transformers, even though the pump surge and power wattage demand are well within the 1400 watt (3600 watt surge) continuous specification of the Powersource 1800. It would appear that this unit might last a long time with lesser-demand applications, but a sump pump application challenges the design of the Powersource 1800 in some way, and is not one that will grant long life to this unit.

However, I still recommend this unit. This may be an unnusual failure, but for two years in this heavy-duty situation, it gave me piece of mind that my basement would not flood while I was away on a business trip. In a non-sump pump application, this unit should be rock-steady reliable as a main UPS for small appliances, refrigerators, and small electronics.

REMEMBER: When you get the unit, you must charge if for 48 hours before using it, even if the read-out says FUL battery charge. This will properly condition your batteries for years of service. I have noted that in recent specifications of the Powersource 1800, a sump pump application is no longer listed as it was two years ago.

OTHER BACK-UP SUMP PUMP SOLUTIONS: The only other 120 volt sump pump solution is to buy a Tripp-Lite UT2010UL (Heavy duty truck application) Inverter-Charger, connected to two 110 amp hour marine duty deep discharge batteries. This is a solution costing over $1400 with all parts included. There are other solutions like this at a similar cost. From personal experience, the 12 volt "marine bilge pump" type back-up pumps do not have the capacity to lift and pump out water in a 10 ft. vertical column at a high rate, and will work only in a low pumping demand situation.

I only used this product a few times. I had for about 1.5 years. During Hurricane Irene a really needed it to work. It said it had a full charge, but when the power went out it beeped and displayed an E03 fault code. I cannot reset it. It is no longer usable. I wasted my money. This was a poor investment.

CTEK 93-56-865 US 0.8 Black 12V Battery Charger

CTEK 93-56-865 US 0.8 Black 12V Battery ChargerI have purchased several different chargers for multiple vehicles and this is one of the better chargers out on the market. Nice quality, cool design, and vary simple to use. The LEDS take some time to get use to and the manual lacks content, but overall, this charger performs well.

I have had many other Battery Tender chargers, all of them have been over priced, failed, poor quality or design, caused battery failure (cooked three batteries), or just had general problems... I had a 90% failure rate. I decided it was time for a vendor change (sorry, but I am not a happy Deltran customer).

I have purchased other larger CTEK charges had have been happy with their operation. I got this little unit to keep my small generator battery charged. I wanted an intelligent small charger that was not too expensive. This is the newer version of the small CTEK charger that adds additional charging steps. My unit has survived several lightening storms and a year of continuous use (it's always connected). I have not tested how "splash proof" it is... In general I have been happy with CTEK chargers.

It should be noted that this charger might not charge a completely dead or bad battery because it's too smart... If your battery is that bad you should replace it anyway.

Buy CTEK 93-56-865 US 0.8 Black 12V Battery Charger Now

This is CTEK's smaller charger for charging 12V batteries from 1.2Ah to 32 Ah and maintaining batteries up to 100Ah. This is a true smart charger with "six" stages. Truth be known, it's really three but I'll say that the others are nice to have. It's a sealed unit about 8" end to end including the strain releif on the permantly affixed leads. If features mounting holes on the main body which are nice (fitting #8 screws, 10's might fit.) The unit gets warm, not overly, hot but noticably warm. If this unit is perminantly mounted as in my case, use nylon spacers behind to give it a little air between the unit and the wall. I think the back is the warmest part of the unit. Despite being sealed (and assumed by many to be weather proof) the instructions clearly say this unit is not be used in the elements. It has a sturdy two prong cord that might be a bit short for many applications but a 16ga extension cord should be safe to use as long as all other safe considerations are made. It ships with two types of leads (both fused with ATC style fuses). An aligator style clip with large jaws suitable for full sized car batteries. It also ships with 1/4" ring terminals that can be quick detached from the charger without disconnecting from the battery terminals. What is a "smart charger"? Simply put its a chager that regulates the voltage going to a battery to prevent over charging it. 20 years ago most chargers needed to be monitored. Nowadays most small electronics have over charge circutry built in (i.e cell phones, laptops, ect.) But for some reason, some 12V chargers are still using a steady voltage source to charge batteries. Over an extended period it will literally "Cook" the battery. Not all smart chargers are made equal either. Some have a bulk charge that brings the voltage to 14.4V for a time then "floats" the battery at a lesser voltage for extended periods of storage. CTEK has included programing that periodically analyzes the battery and mades a decision on whether it needs to continue floating or actually transition back to a heavier charge stage.

The stages are...

1) Desulfation removes build-up on lead plates inside the battery.

2) Bulk Charge Brings the battery voltage up to 14.4V and about 80% of maximum capacity.

3) Absorption Continues the charge with steadily declining current while still holding the voltage at close to 14.4.

4) Analyse Stops charging and sees if battery voltage free-falls (happens if battery has reached the end of its life cycle.)

5) Float Applies roughly 13.6V at a small current to maintain the battery voltage.

6) Pulse Not entirely sure but sounds a lot like float, it switches off and on to maintain maximum charge.

According to the literature batteries may take as much as 1 hour per Ah to reach 80%. After 80% times are hard to find but it sounds like this is also where you can maintain larger capacity batteries (32-100Ah.) For my use, I'm charging a 22Ah sealed lead acid battery as part of a power supply for a DC powered electronics project. So far it's doing well. But this charger would certainly be suitable for motorcycles, lawn tractors, and generators with electric start. As a maintainer, for larger batteries I'm less entusiastic about it. I would spend a little more money and move up to the CTEK 4.3 or the 7002. The 32Ah limit on bulk charging makes this somewhat less attractive for owners of boats, RVs, and garage kept cars. As long as the battery is fully charge when stored it works but especailly with boats that may not always be the case. Still the "0.8" is leaps and bounds ahead of its competition and only about $10 more expensive. Just make sure to follow the safety practices listed and always inspect your batteries regularly. Also, this may boil water off a NON-maintenance free battery so be aware of that if thats what your application uses.

This paragraph is specific to my application but I went ahead an included it as it might give others some insight. So that I might get more detailed information I allowed the 22Ah SLA battery to discharge (disconnected the charger) under normal usage. It averaged about 60mA of current draw from the battery for about 36 hours. The starting voltage at the beginning on the discharge was 13.3V and the ending was just under 12.9V. Once the charger was reconnected quickly moved to stage 2 and started the charge around 13.2V @ 900mA. This trailed off within a few minutes to 13.6V @ 850mA. After a half hour, still on stage 2 it was pushing 13.8V @ 800mA. Through all of this the load was still connected drawing roughly 36mA. At an hour it was still stage 2 with 13.9V @ 790mA. In fact the amp charge held 790 until it passed a charge voltage of 14.2. Up until that point the battery had been taking the steady 790mA and adding 1mV about every ten seconds. Passing 14.2V however the amperage began to trail off the voltage increase slowed as well. At that point it was nearing the end of the stage 2 cycle. Still it took another hour to complete dropping to about 560mA of current and peaking at 14.27V. Total time spent on the bulk cahrge was 2hrs 45mins. As stage 3 began the voltage inceased slightly to about 14.28V but the amperage steadily but slowly deceased. 15 mins after beginning stage 3 the amerage was down another 50mA to 510. After an hour the amperage had dropped to 430mA and the voltage had climbed just shy of 14.29V. After 3 hours into stage 3 the power moving into the battery was 14.30V @ just below 360mA. By 4.5hrs the voltage was holding steady at 14.30V and amperage was down maginally to 345mA. The CTEK transitioned to stage 5 (float mode) after about 4hrs 45mins on stage 3 and about 7.5hrs total. That battery began discharging due to the DC load I had connected. The voltage began steadily dropping for about 25 mins then when reaching the target float voltage and while still on stage 5 the readings began fluctuating about every two seconds. The battery would discharge for a half second then recieve a charge of about 60mA for 1 sec. This has continued to repeat. While in the stage 5 float mode the battery charger is much cooler. Only lightly warm to the touch. When I changed the load from "standy" to in use the float applied a steady current of 40 to 50mA to offset the 100mA to 120mA of draw. The battery voltage dropped about 1mV every two mins. However with the load returned to the standby mode the float current once again stablized and retuned to its pulsing fluctuation. So in summery this will float a battery with less and 45mA of draw on it (clocks, ect) and can always revert back to a full charge if that proves to be insufficent.

I use this charger in my Hi-Fi set up. I have a Dodd preamp that runs on 12V battery power, nothing like getting off of the grid, and I use this charger to maintain the battery in this system. The charger does it's job with out any noise and very little heat and adds nothing to the sound of the preamp which speaks volumes about the quality of this charger.

Easy to use and charges/conditions my car batteries (3 cars) in about 8-10 hours. After one week of use, my mother accidentally drove off in my car while its battery was still charging. When she came back and I told her what happened, we were horrified and so afraid of permanent damage to the brand-new charger, but we were pleasantly surprised. The CTEK's charging wires simply disconnected at the point where the two wires were designed to plug together with a latch that gave way when pulled too hard, so there was no damage at all. CTEK had the potential problem of driving off while still charging in mind, and designed a safe disconnect into their chargers.

This item is great. I bought it when my kids broke the original one after kicking it in the car (not on purpose fortunately).

From the beginning I was not very confident in the robustness of the power adaptator.

But it lasted 1 year and half and something like 10 long travels.

This one it looked really good.

The wire is bigger, connection are sturdier and of course it works well.

There is even a LED on the power adaptator to show the connection is good.

You may think it is useless.

Well it is not. Depending on the car you have (I tried several rental cars) it may fit or not.

So buy this one ahead of time.

No need to wait the original one to stop working.

You know it is gonna happen one day and this one is the one you need right now.

Pico 6380pt 50amp Batt Cable Connector

Pico 6380pt 50amp Batt Cable ConnectorI purchased 10 of these connectors so that I could make various adapters and extension cords to go between our on-board RV battery charger and the portable solar panels, wind / gas generator(s), and truck hitch connector when parked some distance from the trailer. A few of these are for spares and / or future additions to the setup. To keep line loses to a minimum, I used 10 gauge wiring and spent a lot time looking for a robust connector. Even though the most DC current I can put through them with my setup is 16 amps, the durability, wire size, and polarized connection were the key features for buying these. The Pico 50 amp connector has provided this functionality perfectly! As a very large added benefit, they are non gender connectors, meaning ALL cable ends have one of these and I can interconnect any adapter / extension cord combination that I want without ever getting into two of the same gender ends not connecting together situation! When connecting two together, there is a strong 'snap' interaction between them, leaving no doubt that they are connected securely. It does take some effort to pull them apart, but then again, that's exactly what I needed / wanted. So far these are holding up great in a RV-ing / camping environment. They have been rained on, stepped on, buried in dirt / mud, and connected / disconnected multiple times with no signs of wear. I highly recommend these! I ordered them Amazon, and they were delivered within a few days, Amazon rocks! BTW: the 10ga wiring I used is a 25 foot, heavy duty 10/3, 115VAC extension cord from the local hardware store that I cut the ends off of and re-terminated the bulk of the cable with the Pico connectors. That provides a durable, weather proof, flexible cable that is bright yellow to help prevent tripping over (and avoids being left behind because you didn't see it laying on the ground), and it was cheaper then buying 10/2 wire at $2+ per foot.

I haven't had a chance to use this yet, so I don't have any feedback on its use. However, I did want to be sure all you potential buyers read through the description more carefully than I did. Even though the description contains the word "Set," the set they refer to are the two metal contacts a set of contacts not a set of connectors. If you want to connect your wires to anything, you'll need to order TWO of these.

Buy Pico 6380pt 50amp Batt Cable Connector Now

These things are super cool. They're built so that there's no male/female part, and as long as you put the positive wire in the hole that says "plus", they'll work. The retention mechanism for the connectors is firm, but you can disassemble afterwards if you need to do so. The connectors have holes drilled through the middle so you can bolt one side down to whatever, which would be handy in several situations.

I used these to handle the power connections for a sub box which I occasionally need to move from one car to another, or to remove for more luggage space. They work great for that, and handle plenty of power for a moderately sized amplifier. The same company makes some larger connectors if you need more current capacity.

The only drawback I saw was that these are kinda hard to crimp if you don't have a heavy duty battery cable crimp tool (the kind that you usually have to hit with a hammer). I soldered the connectors onto the end of some wire instead; note that it takes a pretty healthy soldering gun (not some puny soldering iron) to heat these up. You can fit 8 gauge wire into the terminals really well; I think 10-12 gauge would actually be a little small / loose.

The only reason for the 4 stars is that the plastic seems a little thin and my not last all that long. I only use the connector about two times a month so hopefully it will last. The price was great and the shipping was very quick.

Whistler XTR-540 Cordless Radar Detector

Whistler XTR-540 Cordless Radar Detector
  • Total Band protection with selectable bands
  • Low-profile alert periscopes
  • Radar Signature ID (RSID)
  • Cordless platform
  • Intense blue text display
  • Battery Operated
  • 72 Point Digital Compass
  • Internal Battery Charger
  • Battery Voltage Gauge
  • 360° Maxx Coverage

The only difference between this detector and the xtr-440 is the compass mode, which I did not find worked well when I bothered to calibrate it, which you have to re-do every time you move it from the mounted position. So now I just don't use that feature, and could have spent a bit less to skip it. Also, when you have the unit on and plugged in to DC power, it will invariably shut itself off with much beeping one hour into your drive. It's not an issue on short drives, but on any car trip of length, be ready to unplug it and plug it back in when it starts shutting itself off every hour.

I bought this for my girlfriend's car that I drive from time to time. It alerts the user to threats through the audible alert system, but it is hard to remember the different sounds, which is why it is great to be able to visually see what the threat is. The problem with this device is that in the day time, you can not see the screen AT ALL! No matter if you change the brightness of the screen or change the viewing angle, it is impossible to see what threats are in the area. At night, you can see it ok, but it is still not up to the quality I believe it should have. Final review....spend your money on a different radar detector (I wish I would have returned it, but was too busy to deal with the problem).

This new whistler is great!!! The fact that it is cordless makes it universal from car to motorcycle. It's charger works very well when plugged in to a power point for a short time. The XTR-540 lasts a whole week on one charge on my work commute, (approx 12 hours). Since my commute is 45 minutes to and from work, the battery saver set to 1 hour works well for me.

On the other side, this unit will detect radar alot further than the eye can see, if it alarms, you better believe it.

Buy it!!! for the money, it's the best on the market. It's better than my last $400.00 Escort that was stolen.

I've had the XTR-540 for about a week now, and so far, so good. Nice display, nice suction cup mount. Minimum number of false alarms. Fairly intuitive setup and menu system. Seems to be holding a charge fairly long. Nice compact size for a cordless unit.

Just purchased and used on a 2500mi round trip through various states. Once I learned the settings and set the unit up how I wanted, it performed well. Only drawback was the amount of battery time consumed. However, with modified settings I can probably improve battery life time.

Quad-Band Yaesu VX-8DR Submersible VHF/UHF Amateur Radio Transceiver

Quad-Band Yaesu VX-8DR Submersible VHF/UHF Amateur Radio TransceiverFirst of all I want to compliment the seller. They are truly a first class operation there at Advanced Specialties. My reason for saying that is I had ordered mt items at seperate time and different orders, I would have had to pay many shipping charges. I sent them an email and ask them to please consolidate my orders wich they did, saved me 30 extra dollars of shipping. The package arrived in record time and just as ordered. Great seller. Very Friendly, Proffesional people at this seller company.

Now about the VX 8DR, This is an excellent radio in a very compact package. The radio has such great features like, APRS Network, Global positioning Capabilities, Sensors built in, Altimeter, volt meter, tempurature, Barometer. Quad band Ham radio 50/144/222/440 bands WOW! Completely submersible, with the ability to establish internet connection through radio repeaters. Can monitor frequencies to 1000 Mhz. AM/FM broadcasts you name it. Truly a great HT to have and be mobile. From a Legendary company Like Yaesu. What more can I say? I purchased the external lapel mic/speaker, The GPS transponder attachment, The high capacity 1800mv rechargable battery (RECOMMENDED) for prolonged operation of radio in GPS/ APRS mode. This Rig is a must to prepare for uncertain future. Remember to protect your stored electronics in a small faraday box/container. Walter Cronkite a ham radio operator himself has said many times, HAM IS TRULY THE ONLY FAIL SAFE COMMUNICATION IN THE WORLD. When all system s fail Ham Is there!

As a new ham radio guy, I looked at a number of handheld radios before selecting this one. There are 4 operating (RX/TX) bands (6m/2m/222 MHz/440MHz), plus AM/FM tuner, shortwave and weather stations. Plenty of programmable memory slots to store your favourite frequencies, APRS/GPS (with optional receiver) and just a ton of other features to play with. There's even a Morse code trainer in the radio.

All the features does mean that reading the manual is necessary in order to figure out what magic combination of buttons is required to access the various modes and features. Selecting modes and options is done with a combination of button presses and turning the dial. Except for a few things, the radio can be operated pretty easily with just one hand. Transmit power, with the exception of the 6m band (fixed at 1W), can be adjusted to one of 4 levels, up to 5W.

The speaker sounds pretty decent, but you can also plug in regular headphones with a standard 1/8" jack.

As a first radio it can seem a little intimidating at first, but the learning curve isn't terribly steep if you go through the manual. For a new ham radio person that might be a little more technically inclined and isn't afraid to read the manual, the VX-8DR offers plenty of room to grow into as you learn more about being a ham.

Buy Quad-Band Yaesu VX-8DR Submersible VHF/UHF Amateur Radio Transceiver Now

Let me put this on the table firstskeptical. That's what I was when I started doing the research behind this little hand-held. I'd say to myself, "there's NO-WAY that little thing could do all that." Well friends and neighbors, this radio does more!

I agree that the user manual is DEEP. Block out at least 3 or 4 hours of your day in order to get an inkling of how this little baby operates. I bought the programming cable with mine but have not had to use it yet. Know your favorite Freq? Type it in and away you go!

More goodies, are you a MARS operator? Don't know what that is? Do your homework and check out the MARS/CAP mod for this radio and extend its already amazing reach!

Not a HAM operator yet? No worries, just lock-out the transmit option and you can scan the waves for chatter all day! I HIGHLY recommend this radio to those can afford it. You will not be disappointed.

Works great. APRS is reliable. Only gripe is that output for speaker is Yaesu's own weird adapters. Get the extended larger battery for sure. Wish the mod allowed TX on aviation band, however, it's a hassle to own multiple almost identical radios.

Want Quad-Band Yaesu VX-8DR Submersible VHF/UHF Amateur Radio Transceiver Discount?

I have my radio attached to a RadioShack discone Antenna 24 ft up and I can make contact with my dad ten miles away on 50 milliwatts on 2 meters. Its a little complicated at first but the menu is really simple if you just go through the menu one item at a time with the manual in hand, it's pretty simple. I haven't tried the APRS yet, but it looks really simple. I only wish that the built in TNC could be used with a computer instead of being dedicated to aprs only.

Campbell Hausfeld RP3200 12-Volt Inflator and Worklight

Campbell Hausfeld RP3200 12-Volt Inflator and WorklightThe RP3200 inflates the tire, the automatic feature operates as advertised and the device is easy to operate.

At the same time, these observations should be noted:

The vibration that occurs when it is operating is such that the device must be held down or it will jump around.

The inflation valve goes on easily, but some force is required to remove it. In the process, some air escapes from the tire.

The inflation hose and the power cable must be folded carefully in order to store them in the compartment provided on the back of the RP3200.

I would recommend this product.

This unit is very compact, and is also very powerful for its size. The

electrical plug-in is plenty long, and the air hose is also sufficient.

I would recommend this unit to be carried in your vehicle, car or truck,

or be left in your garage or workshop for use. I'm glad I purchased

this unit

I have owned this tool for almost a year now, and have used it regularly to maintain tires at proper pressure. Easy to use, reliable, light is useful when needed.

A tad noisy if I want to find a fault with it.

Read Best Reviews of Campbell Hausfeld RP3200 12-Volt Inflator and Worklight Here

It is nearly impossible these days to find an air hose at a gas station. Especially a WORKING air hose! This cheap little gadget solves that problem. I've had it for a little over 2 years, and find it indispensable. It's super-simple to use, and I love how it shuts off when your desired air-pressure has been reached, so you don't have to disconnect the air hose, check pressure, reconnect the hose, and try again...and again.

As others have mentioned:

It is noisy [but have you ever heard a quiet air compressor??];

It jitters around a bit on the ground while it's working [but I don't see that as a problem -after all, it can only go so far while the air hose is attached to your tire's valve stem];

The coupling seal is so secure that it's impossible to remove it from the valve without losing a little bit of air (so, you simply adjust for that by putting in an extra 2-5 PSI to begin with); and

You can only plug it into your car's 12V power outlets -you can't plug it into an home AC outlet.

And yes, you do need a little bit of patience (about 60-90 seconds' worth) to coil the air hose and the power cord back into the little cubby area. Hint: Start with the air hose first, then coil the power cord, "nest-like," concentrically within the air hose coil.

It's not fancy, and it's clearly not built for heavy-duty, frequent use. But when you need it, it does the trick. Just last night, upon starting my car to drive home after a grueling work day, the warning came on the dash that 2 of my tires were low in pressure. It had started to snow, the wind was whipping, and it was bone-chillingly cold. The last thing I wanted to do was drive around in search of a working air hose. Thanks to this little gem, all I had to do was pull into the comfort of my own garage and hook it up (after letting my tires cool so the pressure readings would be accurate). Fifteen minutes later, all my tires were inflated to the correct pressure, and I was snug & warm inside my home.

This $26 gadget is a little life-saver (and sanity-saver); it's a gotta-have-it tool for your trunk or garage!

Want Campbell Hausfeld RP3200 12-Volt Inflator and Worklight Discount?

My car is parked at a location without AC power so I keep this small 12V pump in the trunk. It has a compartment that stores the power cord and air hose. The power cord is long enough to reach both tires on each side of the car. The pump is reasonably quick to inflate considering it is 12V. There is a built-in pressure gauge and flash light. I highly recommend it!

Slime 40001 Motorcycle Tire Inflator

Slime 40001 Motorcycle Tire InflatorI have been looking for a portable tire inflator I can use for my motorcycle and with the lack of choices, I deicded to give the Slime Tire Inflator a try. The inflator is really small (a little larger than the palm as the picture indicates) and comes with a case that fit all the wires and the unit itself. The unit draws power only from the battery so you can't plug it into a power outlet from your house. You can either draw power with the alligator clip, a pre wired power source (just like the ones from battery tender), or from a cigarette lighter source. Operation is pretty simple too. You just connect the hose to the unit, connect the power cable and draw power from the battery from whatever one of the three above methods and flip the power switch on the unit.

Now the bad... since it's being labeled as a portable inflator, the casing of the unit look very cheap and filmsy. Just like the previous reviewer mentioned, the unit is obnoxiously loud and vibrates like crazy. Finally, it did take almost 5 minutes to inflate my motorcycle tire from 20 to 30psi so I definitely wouldn't recommend anyone trying it on much larger car tires. The owners manual did say that users should not use the unit for more than 8 minutes at a time which I assume wouldn't even be sufficient to add 5 psi of air into a car tire.

Overall, I think the product does a good job of inflating small tires on the go but I am very concerned about its useable life. With the way the unit vibrates while inflating tires and the filmsy looking case, I would not place much confidence on it to last forever. However, if you own a motorycle/ATV and need an inflator on the go, I would suggest this product since a few tube of air catridges cost just as much as this.

This is a neat little addition to any bag of motorcycle gear. This little kit is small enough to toss in your bag and forget you have until you need it. The air pressure gauge feels a little cheap, but that is something you can fix by purchasing another one for a couple bucks. The compressor itself feels very solid, but makes a ton of noise when in use. But this isn't a problem for me, especially since I ride a 600cc lawnmower. The kit comes with a nice assortment of connectors to a power source. I don't know that I would go this small for a car tire. I believe that Slime makes large models for bigger applications. For a motorcycle, it works fine. Took about 45 seconds or so to pump my rear tire from 28 PSI to 36 PSI.

Buy Slime 40001 Motorcycle Tire Inflator Now

I was excited to say the least when I tried my new Slime power sport tire inflator, I had a low tire on my car and I didn't want to drag out my large compressor so I thought what a perfect time to try out my new slime purchase. It worked great and in no time had my tire back to the recommended pressure. I love the compact size as it will fit perfectly on my Honda Goldwing!this is exactly why I bought it.

The only draw back I could see was with the mechanism that hooks up to the valve stem, which seems to be the only one out there. Would be nice if some one would come up with a better hook up that would not allow air to escape when you try to disconnect! Other wise its a great unit!!!

Read Best Reviews of Slime 40001 Motorcycle Tire Inflator Here

Motorcycle Consumer News rated this unit very highly. It is intended to be used for emergencies on the side of the road. It IS NOT intended to be a pump to use everyday for inflating tires. I would recommend that it be used exclusively for motorcycles and bicycles.

Want Slime 40001 Motorcycle Tire Inflator Discount?

I was on a motorcycle trip from Chicago to Deadwood, SD when I got a flat, 140 miles from nowhere. My buddy had a similar pump, though slightly larger than this model. Thanks to an emergency patch kit and this pump, our trip was only delayed an hour, instead of days...(try finding a tow truck/motorcycle tire on a Sunday). I have CO2 cartidges for inflating a tire, but they don't allow you the chance to actually find the leak like an inflator does (since whatever punctured my tire didnt stay stuck in it), and they aren't reusable! I agree with the reviews that the valve connection is designed poorly, but there are certain sacrifices you make in exchange for portibility. I don't know why they don't call this a "Motorycle/ATV Tire Inflator". That's what it is meant for. If you are using it regularly, or for an 80psi truck tire, go buy a larger, more heavy duty unit.

The variety of connectors are quite handy, though the wire gage seems questionable maybe 16 gage? I installed a Kuryakyn cigarette lighter to power the unit for any future incidents. It also comes with connectors that work with my Battery Tender Junior quick disconnect, so the lighter wasn't really needed. Or just take off your seat and use the alligator clips.

I tested the unit, and was able to get my back tire easily up to 25psi. After that, it struggles a bit. But it does its job 25psi can safely get you to the next gas station, where you can top it off to the required pressure. The wires are plenty long to reach a MOTORCYCLE tire. So if you plan on using it to pump up the tire on your 5th wheel, look elsewhere. And, no, it doesn't come with a "tire pressure thingy" built it, but then again, neither does the heavy duty compressor in my garage.

I have a bagger, so space isn't necessarily scarce, but this thing is actually small enough to fit under the seat on a lot of sport bikes, or in the side cover storage of a Japanese cruiser. Even smaller if you shed the 10 extra connectors you don't need.

In summary, does what is meant to do...inflate MOTORCYCLE tires.
