It charges my phone just fine. I like the re tractor, keeps wires from tangling. Hopefully no problems with long use, but I only need to charge my phone in the car on long trips or if battery goes dead on the road.

I originally ordered this cheap cell phone car charger for occasional use for both my daughter's cell phone and my cell phone. We had inexpensive cell phones and I wasn't sure how long we would have them, so I didn't want to invest much money in a car charger. (We already both had separate "wall" chargers.) I liked how the cord of this car charger could be easily retracted to keep it out of the way. The charger did what it was supposed to for about 10 months, then it quit charging. For the money, I couldn't complain. In fact, I ordered the same one as a replacement because I surprisingly still have the same inexpensive cell phone.

If you want a quick charger, that will limit the longevity of your battery, then buy something else. I thought the thin cord might break at some point, but I've not had any issues and it helps that I can just retract it easily and keep it from tangling in the shifter. I bought it specifically because I didn't want a high output car charger and it's worked perfectly for a long time.

The price while not cheap is definitely affordable especially if you consider what it will do for you.

The makers of this unit tought it as being able to run "refrigerators, washers, microwaves..." but beware. The output of this device is a split-level alternating square wave, which they call a "modified sine wave". Most "dumb" devices like light bulbs, drills, A/C motors, compressors, fans, etc. will run fine on this. However, when I plugged it into my new Sears freezer, it wouldn't even start the compressor. When I plugged in my microwave, it ran but made a terrible buzzing sound. The same thing happened to my refrigerator... it ran but made a terrible noise. I unplugged them right away for fear of damaging them.

The long and the short of it is this. If you are in construction, and need ample, quiet, clean A/C power to run your heavy duty tools, compressors, cement mixers, etc. then this is a great product for you. If, however, you are a home-owner trying to deploy solar energy in your home, this product is not what you want. It flat out won't operate some appliances, and sounds like it's killing other ones! Go with a "Pure Sine Wave" inverter. They cost roughly double for equivalent wattage size, but the output is identical to what your power company provides. The AIMS Power Low Frequency 6000 Watt 24-volt Split Phase Solar Inverter Charger is what I recommend if you want to run your whole house on solar. It even has the charging regulator built right in. It puts out 240 split phase A/C and allows you to hook it right up to your breaker box. You can't do that with this inverter.

an inverter is supposed to turn on fans to cool itself. The fans are hardwired to the on/off switch and can take volts off your batteries at night, depending on your batteries. I have one continuous for a few days then need to turn it off and then back on to do what it's supposed to. It gets weak, don't use a garbage deposal. not very continuous.

This is not a bad product. It is very intuitive to use, in fact I didn't even have to look at the manual to set it up. If you live in a sunny state, then the possibility that you will have to use the car charge (cigarette) adapter to power up the headset is very low. Its main weakness is that the person on the other end of the line won't hear you very well, unless you scream your way through the conversation.

My office is my truck and my ability to conduct business on the phone is critical to my success. Also, much of my driving is on unpaved roads. I have never had to charge the devise outside of its solar charging feature. I have used this product for 3 months and have had no complaints from the other end of my phone calls. With bluetooth devices I tend to charge them once, then once the battery dies, never again. It just never makes it back inside the house. Recharging once a week or whatever seems obnoxious.

Enter the self-charging LG bluetooth. It's stupid easy to use (two buttons), syncs up quickly, and never, ever, ever needs to be charged (after the first time). I put it on the window of my car and it's stayed charged for several months of light to moderate usage. Fantastic!

Now for the bad news--the speaker is crap. I've given up using this on the freeway at speed. Granted I drive fast and have a noisyish sports car, but I still have to wait until I hit one of LA's inevitable traffic jams to really make any important calls. A solar-powered hands-free bluetooth speaker/mic for your car would be resistant to sun and heat. It is not. This unit worked very well for me from January through June. It never needed a charge despite many cloudy days mounted on the inside of the windshield as directed by the manufacturer. But one hot day in July, while I was at work, the unit overheated, swelled up, warped and ruined the power and answer/call buttons. It is fused into a single mass and literally bursting at its plastic seams.

This is a device DESIGNED to be installed in a hot, sunny windshield, and it was destroyed the first time the temperature exceeded 90 degrees outside. The temperature inside the car may have been 120 I don't know but still, extremely disappointing. And it's not like I live in Texas or Arizona. This was a sunny day in Oregon. Insert your own clouds-and-rain joke here.

I give two stars because the concept is excellent and the initial quality was decent. But buy this only if you want to install it in your car and then take it out every day and carry it around with your phone or misplace it. Lame.

Goal Zero 19006 Guide 10 Adventure Kit with 4 Goal Zero AA Batteries

I have purchased, used and tested every lightweight solar charging device on the market that I could find. The Goal0 nomad 7 and Guide 10 set is the only one that works sufficiently that I can be completely off the grid with my backpacking devices and have no need for extra batteries. See below for solar panels tested. I have been testing portable solar panels for several years now, and the Goal 0 products are the best.

The Nomad 7 is the only solar panel that has the capability to charge an adequate battery pack, my headlamp AAA's, AND my smartphone/GPS all in the same day in full sunlight. It is the only panel that has reserve capacity to charge my devices in less than full sun (shady/cloudy). No other panel has the output of the Nomad 7. Its closest competitor is the Brunton panel. The Brunton weighs 20% more and is rated to output 30% less than the Nomad 7 (Brunton = 5 watts, Nomad 7 = 7 watts). In my testing the lower output was verified. The off-axis performance of the Nomad 7 is superior. It maintains full output to a greater angle of sun than any other panel I have tested. The Nomad 7 is the only panel, in my knowledge, that uses the more efficient mono-crystalline panels. It does seem to give it an edge in real-world usage. As far as flexibility, that characteristic has nothing to do with panel efficiency. Another of the well-thought out features of the Nomad 7 is the connection options. The Xpal SP-2000 and the Solio both rely on many different tips to connect to different devices. The Nomad 7 has three great options built in: 6.5 volt fast charge for the Guide 10 charger, 5 V USB connector, and a port that the included 12V female car lighter adapter plugs into. Every portable device has the option of an inexpensive car power adapter, and the Nomad 7 nicely offers that ability.

The Guide 10 charger works to its rated specifications, unlike most of the other solar devices I have used. It charges AA and AAA batteries. It charges them faster with the Nomad 7 than any other solar panel/charger combination that I have tested. The Goal 0 batteries that ship with the Guide 10 are the best of their type I have tested. They are low-discharge, like the Eneloops, but much better. The Eneloops are rated at 2000 mAh, but charge only to about 1900 mAh capacity. The Goal 0 are rated at 2000 mAh, but charge to 2200 mAh. The guide 10 has some very well thought out features, including the LED flashlight, the function switch and the built-in hanging loop. These touches all demonstrate that the designers are users, and thought well about how these devices would be used.

All is not perfect, though. The Guide 10 does have an overheating problem, but only in very strong sunlight and under certain conditions. This is a known issue that is being fixed as I write this. This brings me to one of my most important experiences; customer service. Goal 0 has the best customer service by far than any other of the solar panel manufacturers I have tested in this group. Immediate phone contact, responsiveness to questions and warranty service are far and away some of the best I have experienced.

Following is a list of the solar panels I have tested, and short comparison comments on each.

1. Powerfilm USB + AA: This one has a great form factor, is flexible and very durable, and is the lightest weight and most compact of all the solar chargers. Its fatal flaw is that it simply does not put out enough power to be practical in extended backpacking. It does not fully charge the AA batteries when it indicates a full charge, and is not nearly as flexible as the Nomad 7 for connection. The unit was replaced on warranty, but the replacement performed exactly the same. I tested a total of four of these, and all performed the same. Customer service was good, after spending weeks trying to get their attention, and this happened several times.

2. Solio Classic: This one has a nice form factor, but the unit simply does not charge its internal battery nor a connected device at all adequately. Just in case, I had it replaced on warranty and the replacement performed exactly the same.

3. Xpal Power SP-2000: Same as the Solio. Internal battery rated at 2000 mAh, only charges to about 1100-1300. Not enough power overall to be practical. Very good customer service.

4. Brunton Explorer: A good panel, but not enough overall power. Weighs 20% more than the Nomad 7, output is 30% less.

I was very skeptical about purchasing this solar charger after reading the reviews.

I was going to take it on a 14 day back country hunting trip and needed some was to charge my android phone as I use it as a camera, GPS and alarm clock. I took this item in the mountains and on a nice sunny 60 degree day I hung it up on a small pine tree and occasionally adjusted it to be at the best angle to the sun and it charged my phone in just a little over 2 hours. I also charged my dads phone and the battery pack from Goal0 as well.

I love this solar charger and feel strongly enough about it I decided to write a review as I was extremely skeptical..

There was a bad run of the power packs that would heat up and melt. GoalZero has corrected the problem months ago and sent out new power packs that are labeled "GUIDE 10 PLUS" in the indention below where it says GoalZero. The old defective power packs just say "GoalZero" with nothing in the endintion. The word !PULS! tells you that you have the re engineered power pack. Amazon's stock of GoalZero products are the old defective power pack that will heat up and melt. I ordered one on January 20, 2012 and got the bad power pack. After talking with customer service, it is evident that the old stock will be shipped until it is exhausted. They were very helpful in refunding my money without requiring the product be returned. Make your purchase from Amazon THROUGH one of the other sellers listed on the right. I contacted Blue Kangaroos and they are aware of the problem and HAVE the new power pack ready for shipment.

Update 2/3/2012:I have both the old and the new power packs now and have additional information. I was told by GoalZero Tech Support that some of the old power packs, the ones that DO NOT have the word "Plus" on the label, were modified before shipping and will not heat up. The only way to know if yours has been modified is the pry the end cap off of the Power pack. The end cap that covers the plugs and LED. Just take a small screw driver, put it in the grove and twist, it will come off. Behind the LED there are three large resistors [the large gray round things with color bands on them]. If none of the color bands are BLACK, this power pack has been modified and WILL NOT heat up. I have verified this. Mine has no black bands and does not heat up. GoalZero will still send you a new power pack and batteries if you request it. There is a slight functional difference between the Old and New power packs. The "Old" will charge devices through the USB port at about a 300ma higher rate than the New "Plus" power pack and will charge the batteries a little faster. This is because the old Power Packs have the Data+ and Datalines connected together which tells most devices to accept charging at a higher rate.

I ordered the Goal 7 Nomad along with the Guide 10 Power pack so that I could use it while in Africa. I was experiencing problems immediately during the first use. Followed instructions that came with it and it would only charge my IPOD for a few minutes then it would shut off and stop charging. This was all being tested while I was in the Arizona sun 100 degree weather similar to what it would have been like in Africa. Contacted Goal0 Customer Service and spoke to Meggan who said she could get it all sorted out before I left for Africa. Emailed her back and did not get a response. I was in Africa for about a month when I returned and emailed Meggan again and stated that I had contacted her before and I was still experiencing the same problems. She then filled out a work order for me to send it in to be tested at my expense. This was in November that I shipped it out and then got it back a month later and it was the same exact one I had sent in. No explanation what so ever was attached to the returned item. I contact Meggan AGAIN and she said that it was tested and nothing was wrong with it. Even after going through all this hassle, it still does not work. I would not recommend using Goal0 at all. The customer service is terrible. In the mean time, I did buy myself a Solio Mono and it worked PERFECTLY right from the start and still works to this day.

The Odyssey PC625 Powersports Battery is a very good Battery. When I first received the battery, I was a little worried because it is very compact. I put it in my boat (it arrived fully charged) and went out to the lake. I tooled around for about 4 hours and still had a 1/4 charge. I liked it so much that I bought a second one and I now use two of these to power my 40 lbs thrust electric trolling motor. The small size allows me to easily fit both in my Minkota Battery enclosure. I have the motor on my square back canoe, and this set of batteries keep me trolling all day long. Smooth power delivery and long life as well as the compact sealed design make these batteries ideal for powering small boat motors. It takes and holds a charge very well. It is a little more expensive than a similar battery (that is larger, heavier, and may not work as well) but I believe it is completely worth the price. I would recommend these without hesitation.

heheh, I'm going to be the outlier here believe it or not I use this in my car! :) I think this really shows the power and versatility of this battery. I modified the back of my car to open up to allow for easier working on the engine, but this required me to tilt the trunk 90 degrees the original battery was a normal battery, so this would translate to spilling it's contents all over everything, which is generally what you don't want to do. So I searched around and looked for what my options were in terms of a sealed battery that could still put out enough amps to turn over my car more than a few times and not leave me stranded in some parking lot. A couple other Lotus owners also identified this battery (which they used for weight reasons), and I switch to it about two years ago without a single issues.

Now I don't recommend this for everyone (or really anyone), because there are quite a few caveats such as I had to put a battery quick-disconnect on it because the parasitic load from the alarm would drain it dead in about a week. But I think the fact that I can use the battery and have it perform so well in an environment it most likely was not intended to be in speaks volumes of its quality.

When I relied on the USB charging, the radio was frequently uncharged. This is much more convenient and also quicker.

Pros:

Provides 750 watts of power as advertised, so long as you use the alligator clips on your car battery.

Digital display is great.

I'm using it right now to power my laptop in my truck as I write this review.

Cons:

I have a full-size pickup with a heavy-duty battery, and if I attempt to run this off my charging port in the truck, I get constant beeps from the unit. Apparently it thinks my battery is about to die, even when it's completely full.

Starting your vehicle trips the low battery mode, shutting off the inverter. I realize this is a problem with man units, but should be resolved for a five star rating.

This unit is LOUD, like "holy cow what is that racket" loud. If you want to use it inside your vehicle, bring earplugs. I knocked a star off for this.

Other Thoughts:

Four star rating for being pretty awesome, plus one for the price and minus one for the sheer volume.

I use this product every day in a car and also in a big truck to power a heating pad (for a bad back) and also for charging cell phones, flashlight batteries and other electronic devices. Works great using the cigarette lighter cord if the watt load is less than 100 watts. At less than 60 watts which is usual for my purposes, the fan never comes on and so it is very quiet. The instructions state that over 100 watt loads must be connected directly to the battery with supplied spring clips.

They are:

1) The unit is LOUD as in an acid metal band stoned out of their minds on the last show of the tour when it is near 50 W of power or more.

2) The "Low power shut-off" has two problems:

A) It shuts off way too fast and easily; I've been unable to tell exactly where it shuts down but it only takes a moment at that voltage level to shut down (IE: if something powers up in the truck that drops the voltage for a second this thing will trip).

B) No restart once it shuts down for voltage it will NOT restart when the voltage has returned to normal. You have to shut the unit off and back on to restart it again (horrible if you are driving, and the unit is used to charge your laptop)
