Battery Tender 021-1164 10W Solar Charger

The Battery Tender 10W solar panel worked well for 7 months. Now the control unit has apparently failed and the charging LED only flickers occasionally. I was propping the panel against the inside of the windshield of my parked car where it could receive direct sunlight in the afternoon, but even when the sunlight was indirect, the LED charging indicator on the Battery Tender would glow as soon as the sun was fully up in the morning. The car in question doesn't get driven enough to keep its battery from running down, and the solar panel was doing an excellent job of maintaining the battery. I had purchased an adapter cable that plugged into the car's cigarette lighter socket so it wasn't too inconvenient to set up and remove the panel. Previously, I needed to use a battery charger every couple of weeks and now, unfortunately, that chore has returned.

I purchased this Solar Battery Charger to maintain the battery in my vehicle while it is not in use for extended periods of time. Nearly all cars have alarm systems and other devices which draw power from the battery on a continuous basis. This current drain can reduce the battery voltage enough to cause Sulfides to form on the plates of the battery. When this happens, the battery is doomed to an early death. The solar charger generates just enough power to counteract the small current drains, and prevent the battery voltage from dropping. I had it connected to a vehicle which was taken out of service for several months. When I switched on the ignition and hit the starter, it was just as strong as if I had used the car yesterday. I received this item last week, plugged it in the AC for 36 hours per the "Warning Tag" attached to the handle (but contrary to the 8-hour recommended in the instruction pamphlet enclosed). I guess the reason they put it on a RED tag on the handle was probably due to the instructional pamphlet being in error, so that's what I saw first and complied with. I used it to start my 2004 Kia which had a battery completely run down to nothing, and it cranked it right over. I only used the car for a short trip to the store that day, however I had to use it again this morning again. Well, it had just sat in my back seat for the last few days, and I wondered if that single charge up would have been sufficient or whether I'd have to hook it back up to the AC again first. Nope! It cranked the car right over and it felt like there was plenty of reserve power left over to do it a few more times with no problem.

I'm very satisfied with this product, and would not hesitate recommending it without reservation to anyone who needs a life-saver for their car's battery. It sure beats calling a two company to jump-start me in the morning, or try to impose on a neighbor or stranger for assistance.

MONEY WELL SPENT.

I left my car at my dad's for six months. The battery was a five year battery which was four years and eleven months old. When I went back the battery measured 0 volts. I had just received the Scvhumacher 3600, but had not unpacked it. I tried my 400 peak amp; 900 peak amp jump starter. No dice! I unpacked the Schumacher, plugged it in and let it charge overnight, although the digital readout showed 100% charge. Next morning, hooked it up, turned it on, let it sit for about five minutes. The car started immediately. I had to run on the alternator to the parts house for a new battery. I can't say enough good about this product.

Over the years I have had several 12V jump starters. None of them seem to last too long. I think it's a combination of the heat in my truck and not charging the unit properly. I asked around to many tow truck drivers and owners. They all recommended The Schumacher Pro Series Line of jump starters.

This thing is a monster. It ways a ton (battery) and the charging is simple. The fan runs when plugged in and it's not quiet. I have used the unit several times on completley dead batteries and no problems at all.

I found that it is top heavy so it won't stay upright so I lay it on it's side. It is a sealed AGM so that is no problem.

I also use it as a 12v power source for my emergency radios. I think it would last for many days of transmitting at 5 watts.

I hope the heat will not shorten it's life. We will see.

I now have had this for almost a year and have used it several times on diesel engines that have two large batteries. Turns over with no problem. This charger was the best idea.

It is not cheap but it's worth it for sure.

I bought the AA battery powered version of this charger after having had to rely on the generosity of a neighbor with a generator to keep my phone charged during the 4 days I was without power after hurricane Sandy. I had a single AA-powered charger that I had picked up as an impulse purchase at TJ Maxx that was pretty much totally useless, but I liked the idea of a battery-powered charger and figured that capacity (number of batteries) was the real issue.

The tricky part of using this device is getting the battery cover back on after you install the batteries. Other reviewers have already mentioned that it's very difficult to determine the correct battery orientation the markings inside the battery compartment are virtually unreadable under any lighting conditions due to reflections from the glossy black plastic case. But what is worse is trying to slide the cover back on, getting it set correctly in its grooves, while keeping the batteries compressed down on their spring connections. It took me so many tries that I almost gave up on ever being able to try out the charging capability the cover either just slid off, or went on crooked, or didn't snap into place completely. I was afraid I was going to break it before I would ever get it put back on correctly.

The picky part is that the unit seems to only work with the newest, freshest batteries you can possibly find. I put in a set of Duracell alkalines that were guaranteed fresh until 2017 and only got a 5% test recharge out of them before the unit's LED turned red indicating that the battery charges were too low to be used then the LED refused to light at all implying that the batteries were drained. However, all of them subsequently tested fine on a battery charge tester and worked fine in a flashlight. I tried another set with the same 2017 date and this time the LED lit up blue, indicating that they were good, but as soon as I plugged in my phone to charge, the LED changed immediately to red and shortly thereafter turned off and charging stopped. However, the batteries again tested fine and worked fine in a flashlight. I finally tried a set of batteries with a fresh through 2022 date and they actually worked I was able to charge my HTCThunderbolt from 46% to 97% over the course of an hour or so (sorry I didn't pay attention to the time). After that, the charger indicated that the batteries were drained but once again, they tested just fine with a battery tester and worked fine in a flashlight.

Bottom line, this charger does actually work and will re-charge a phone, but only if you have super fresh AA batteries to put into it and even then it won't drain them completely, so they'll be usable for other purposes afterwards, but just not to keep charging your phone like you'd want or expect.

It's what you'd expect. It takes your choice of 4 AA batteries (rechargeable/not included of course) and has a female USB jack to charge your stuff. Has a nice on/off switch that glows blue when on. The + battery labeling could be better but whatever, you'll figure it out. Works great with my iphone 4 when I'm camping without mains for a few days. I'd give it 5 stars if were $9.99 but it's not so, 4 stars.

So, I thought it would be nice to have something like this. i.e., a device that takes 2 or 4 high capacity AA batteries, and, with the help of a simple circuit board to boost and regulate the voltage, to provide a nice charging current for my smart phone. I noticed there were three price points for this type of device: There's one that's only like $3 or $4, then there's one that's around $10-$12 that I saw on another site, then there's this one by well-respected Verbatim on the top end. It was clear from reviews that the cheap one needed some slight mods to be useful, and the mid priced one seemed to have some reviews saying it was "cheaply constructed". So, I said, WTH, I'll just buy the "good" one.

My thinking on buying a device like this: I play a lot of long poker tournaments, and it's just not really possible to get a charge in on the phone in the middle of the Venetian or other casinos. It would be helpful if I had a backup to charge my phone.

I think if I could do it over, I'd buy the one that costs about half as much as the Verbatim one. The device is all plastic, I sort of expected maybe I would have something a little more sturdy if I got the Verbatim one, but I didn't. It does have a pretty pimp blue and red LED light around the port (indicating a "good" charge remaining, versus a "nearly dead" charge), so maybe I paid an $8 premium for pimp LED.

A lot of people complained that the cheaper devices got hot under load. This one does not--it barely warmed up at all whilst charging. Clearly, the output is steady voltage, even as the batteries discharge, and I popped her up on an oscilloscope under load, and they've clearly made a decent circuit here. I put four 1600 mAh tenergy premium NiMH batteries in here, and I got just about one solid charge on my Samsung Epic. Maybe a little more.

The device is about exactly the shape of a lipstick tube, plus 50% in all dimensions. It comes with a very short (4 inches maybe) microUSB to USB cable, which apparently has the data pins shorted out (this is normal and necessary for high speed charging). I don't know if the device USB jack has the pins shorted, or if the cable did, I didn't check it; if it is the latter, then the cable that comes with this should not be used in a computer USB jack since it will draw more than 500 mA rating.

All in all, I'm happy with it, it does what I expected...I think though that I would have been 90% as happy with the devices out there that cost half as much.

There is an admonition in the instructions that says NOT to use it on an iPad. I am not sure why--maybe you can't get a full charge. But, it will definitely charge your smart phone. The other guy that dropped a 1-star rating on this because of the iPad thing, that's really out of line, since the device otherwise appears well enough constructed, and does its job.

This charger works with Alkaline and NiMH batteries but is NOT compatible with Energizer Lithium L91's. This is a major bummer as I wanted a charger that I could keep in my car long term for emergencies. Alkalines will leak and NiMH will eventually self discharge over long periods so I thought this would be the perfect solution when loaded with Energizer L91s. Wrong. I think the overall voltage when using 4 Energizer lithiums in series becomes too high and triggers some sort of protection cutoff. I tried with both the Energizer 9x and 4x lithiums and they both failed.

The charger works great with Eneloop 2000 mahs (almost 100%). I can barely get from 0 to 40% on new Duracell alkalines. I guess that's still better than nothing if needed.

No problem with the battery cover as reported in other reviews. Just need to carefully line up and slide in with steady pressure. There are no springs and loose metal parts to bend or damage (which is what I thought.)

The detection capabilities of this Radar detector are very good. It has not failed me thus far and it also filters pretty well. I give it a 3 though because I bought it specifically as I was after a cordless detector.

First issue, you need to charge the batteries first time round through the car lighter charger for 12 hrs (go figure that). Otherwise you would need to invest in a 12V switch power supply to charge outside of the car.

In any case, even after charging it, the battery life is very poor which renders this whole idea of cordless worthless.

So if you are not caught up on the cord vs cordless part, get the corded model and call it quits. You'll be satisfied.

I bought two of these, one for me, one for my fiance. These detectors work well for picking up VG2, traffic sensors on the highway, and at the grocery store. BUT, I've had at least 3 times when a cop has been pointing his radar gun right at me, and this detector did NOTHING. I even got a speeding ticket when the cop was viewable 1/4 mile away. His radar gun pointed right at me, and this detector did nothing.

The only thing it's good for is picking up the static radar that the police use, to monitor the speed of oncoming traffic, while they are driving. That will also let you know if a cop is nearby. Other than that, its a big heavy worthless waste of money.

I don't care about the lame screen, it's the audio that will alert you to look at it and check your speed.

The frist couple times that the cops were standing outside their car with their radar/lydar gun and it didn't go off, I figured that they were just trying to slow traffic, But no, this thing just doesn't do what it's supposed to do.

And it's happened with both of the ones I bought. You get what you pay for. And a speeding ticket.

Whistler makes good products, but not this one. They did something different, and it cost me $182 for the ticket plus $300 for a trsffic lawyer. I could have avoided this if I wasn't trying to be cheap.(and didn't speed all the time)But why else would you buy a detector? cause your a speeder, like me.

After 18 months our childs ride on train would no longer charge well. As the charger was supplying voltage, I took the chance that the problem was the battery and decided to replace it . The battery dimensions, voltage rating, and current rating matched perfectly with the original battery and was one third the price of the replacement battery from the toy manufacturer. I unsoldered the old battery connector and used it with the new battery. After reading about charging of these very cheap lead acid batteries with their very cheap chargers, I decided to carefully monitor the obtained battery voltage. I found that although the original instructions said to charge the battery for 14 hours, 30 minutes seemed to give this battery a complete charge. So far the battery has worked well in the ride on train and my two year old grandson is having a ball.

I purchased this car charger as a replacement to a similar model, which was failing to a problem with the wire. So far this model is functioning better, but the plastic housing is rather cheaply made and the two sides are beginning to separate. Probably nothing a little glue can't fix, but I guess you get what you pay for. Overall still working well since my purchase.

Cord is way too short on this one for me. In our van (Honda Odyssey) the cord is stretched out to reach the dash and puts constant pressure onto the mount because of it.

Developed a short in the cord after the most minimal use. Was able to move it around to get it to work for a while, but eventually it stopped working no matter what I did. I guess you get what you pay for.

I had worn out my previous car charger and needed a replacement. I looked around and being on a budget I couldnt bring myself to spending 30+ dollars at ATT. This product does as what its suppose to. It plugs in and charges my phone. I bought this for a Galaxy Note and it works great being that most Android phones use the same USB. Im extremelty happy with this product. I bought this charger for my Droid X and for charging it works ok. Last weekend I used my Droid X to go to a friends house about an hour away, and used the GPS feature to get there. The GPS kept kicking off every few minutes. I didn't know why it was doing that, and did some research on it. On one of the Droid X forums, it says the reason that is happening is the charger output is too low. It seems that the GPS causes the Droid to use more power and this charger will not supply the proper power to charge the Droid X and use the GPS at the same time. It works great for simply charging the Droid X, but not to use it and charge it at the same time. The charging current is simply just too low. There is a much better solution. Get the Scosche reVIVE II Dual USB Car Charger for iPad, which has two settings. One is for 2.1 amps and the other is for 1 amp. Use it on the 1 amp setting for the Droid X. The other solution is to get a Belkin Micro USB Auto Charger 5VOLT 1A. It has a 1 amp output and is everything you need to use the Droid X and charge it at the same time while traveling. The Belkin solution is less money. Just plug the USB cord into the chargers and all is well.

Typical economic car charger. Wasn't thinking and pulled on the cord instead of the connector to unplug it. Wires slipped out of the connector and it was ruined. User error, I know, but good construction goes a long way with me. An extra bead of solder or hot glue in the connector's housing would make a world of difference.

So if you baby it and make sure you connect/disconnect it from your device while grasping the connector only, you're good to go. If you're constantly unplugging/plugging it in like I am when I get in or out of the car, buy the one they offer wherever you purchased the device.

I got the two pack and they seemed to work fine from the start but within two months, they seem to work at random times. I will plug it in and the phone shows charging then after about a minute its like the phone doesn't detect a charger. The car's port works fine. But when it DOES charge, it charges ok. Not very fast but it IS a car charger. DROID 2.

I bought this in July it's Aug. 28th and it doesnt work anymore. Not worth the hassel. Even though the price is cheap it isnt worth it if it's not even going to last longer than 2 months.

We needed this charger for the batteries we purchased. It was a good value. It charges the batteries and the batteries hold a charge for a long time.

ICP Solar 22001 BattPak Battery Charger

I thought that this is a solar battery charger, but no... You have to purchase a different component before you can charge batteries with sunlight. I found that to be quite misleading.

It's true, this doesn't have any inherent solar panel you can buy all manner of different ones (one that clips nicely to the back (low power) or a big folding panel that gives 25W you choose based on what you need.

The unit itself is very well made is an excellent 10xAA trickle charger and has a 12V cigar lighter socket for 12V output as well (no messing with all those funny tips from other manufacturers). e.g. plug in your iphone/ipod/cellphone 12V cable and your off.

The only thing really missing with this unit nowadays is a USB socket, but again, easy to get a 12V male to USB adapter.

Best thing is that you can plug into the 12V charging socket in a vehicle and charge while driving (something that is often available in 'wilderness areas' where no AC is available), you can use AC to pre-load the cells before you head out or trickle them, and then solar is available when all else fails.

It also feels incredibly sturdy (like the way that old Motorola phones used to) and feels as though it would survive a drop.

Careful if you fly with this though...with 10 AAs in, it has an x-ray profile that looks remarkably like the magazine for an assault rifle...found that out the hard way!!

Excellent component in a AA based backup power setup...
