Wagan EL2201 Elite 400 Watt Pure Sine Wave Inverter

After much research, I bought the Wagan EL2201 because I was looking for a pure-sine-wave inverter in this size range and Wagan's other products seem to have a fantastic reputation.

There are lots of poor reviews on this one, and the problem seems to be the same: The unit starts up once, then immediately dies.

Problem: The cigarette lighter adapter comes with a fast-blow fuse. My unit did the same thing, and I found that the fuse (located inside the plug itself) had blown as soon as I plugged a very low-draw radio into the inverter. Inverters have lots of capacitors that need to charge then the unit powers up, creating a momentary large load that a slow-blow fuse can absorb, while a fast-blow cannot.

A 400-Watt inverter is pretty large to run on a cigarette lighter plug in the first place, and should definitely be run directly from the battery or hard-wired if you plan on using anything with a significant draw.

In fact, the instructions say NOT to use the cigarette lighter if you plan on running anything more than 150W.

Solution: Replace the fast-blow fuse included with the inverter with a slow-blow OR a larger fuse (do NOT exceed the rating of your vehicle's outlet!). This is a $0.50 fix and my inverter now works flawlessly!

I'm guessing that the poor reviews are from those who use the lighter adapter and have this problem, while the positives are those who either hard-wire or connect directly to battery.

Now my inverter works great, doesn't play havoc with ANYTHING (unlike my modified sine-wave inverters), and the price was right. The built-in USB is a nice touch too.

Bottom Line: Great inverter for the price if you don't mind replacing a fuse or hard-wiring. As mentioned before, an inverter this size probably should be hard-wired anyway.

I see some very negative reviews of this 400 watt inverter, but my wife and I have been very pleased. We live in a 100% solar home and have found the unit great for running our computer, printer, and powered computer speakers all at the same time. I have even run my Pioneer surround sound, DVD player, and 100watt powered sub-woofer at the same time. This use has been during the day, but there was certainly no shortage of power from the unit whenever the input voltage has been sufficient. One thing I need to mention is that I replaced the cord with the cigar lighter end on it with my own 2 foot long, 10 gauge wire with a three prong plug on it that plugs into our 12vdc in house recepticles. When I first bought the unit I had issues with low voltage signal too, but I do not believe the supplied cigar plug makes good enough contact to conduct the needed voltage. If you have the low voltage issue, try another type of plug or direct wire it. It is not unusual for this unit to be on 6 to 10 hours a day in our home and operates flawlessly. Yes, the cooling fan kicks on and off, but that is what it is supposed to do. I have also used it to charge various battery operated items drills, NiCad chargers, and the like, once again no problems. The ONLY reason I did not give it a five star rating is due to the issue with the cord. When you consider that most cigar lighter sockets are designed to handle 15 amps DC before blowing the on-board fuse (that's with the vehicle running), its easy to see why only the lightest of loads can be run using the supplied plug. Anything large use battery clips, direct wire or hardwire it into your system. Bought the unit about six months ago, should have done the review sooner.

Having said that be honest with yourself when sizing your inverter.I have taken my living room off grid part time. This inverter powers my 40 in. SONY 3D-HDTV-DTV,BOX, MY Surround System 5.1 my Sub woofer,a pole fan.47amp @ 120 volts a/c. 5-5watt 12volt d/c floresent lights for avg 4 hours a night. If you draw more than about 5-10W the fan comes on and it's pretty noisy. Otherwise my unit works fine (I am not using the cigarette lighter plug).

Let me preface by saying that I had really high hopes for this inverter. What's not to love? Pure sine, 400 watts, USB port, yes please! My experience however, was far from pleasant. I was excited to test the (first) unit out after it arrived, as the inverter it was replacing, (180 watts) was not large enough to run the equipment I was trying to operate. I wanted to go with a pure sine unit as well because it would be powering electronics like audio gear or a TV. Well, I plugged it in only to find that the red light came on immediately. Bummer. I unplugged and plugged the unit back in and no change. I then decided to just give it a minute and tried the USB port to see if it would charge my phone. That at least worked. Shortly thereafter, the unit started smoking and emitting that ever-so-putrid burning electronics smell. DONE!

I let Amazon know and boxed it up to send back. Exchange was easy as pie and in a few days another (second) unit arrived. Excited to test the replacement out as I thought I may have just gotten a dud, I plugged it in and turned it on. No red light! Super! I then began to do some testing. I plugged in my laptop to the inverter and my touchpad immediately stopped working. Weird. So I did some more testing. I plugged in an audio amp and it worked but was very noisy on both the output and the sound the transformer was making on the amp itself. I plugged in a strand of LED Christmas lights and not all the lights would work. I plugged in my laptop again and noticed it would not charge. It would momentarily then stop then charge again and repeat. The transformer in the power supply was also making an abnormal buzzing sound. Through the course of more testing, I found that anything I plugged into the inverter that had a capacitive touch interface would stop working as soon as plugged it into the inverter (smartphone, touchpad, etc). I also found that the unit put out a large amounts of RF interference (AM radio distorted when inverter was on). Super weird. The fan was also running almost constantly even with a low load on the unit.

The RF issue has been commented on by others that have bought the Aims 180 pure sine inverter (which is as far as I can tell identical to the Wagan 180 watt pure sine version). So has the issue of blowing up, smoking, etc. Before I start to ramble, these units over promise and under deliver. I returned the second unit to Amazon after being so dissatisfied.

I ended up purchasing the Power Bright APS300-12 Pure Sine Power Inverter 300 Watt 12 Volt DC To 110 Volt AC. I could not be more satisfied with that unit. Way better built than the Wagan. Works as advertised. I was sold within minutes and will not hesitate to buy another Power Bright inverter.

Calling this a car kit is a bit ambitious as it's really just a car mount with a charger. It does fit the Evo nicely, and seems to be made of quality stuff. However, I found that anchoring it to the windshield resulted in so much vibration that the screen wasn't readable; the only way I could figure out to damp it was to mount it such that the bottom of the mount sits against the dashboard. Having done that, the only remaining problem is that sometimes when I pull the phone out, the whole cradle slides off (as another reviewer has mentioned). That's really annoying but there doesn't appear to be any easy way of fixing it other than perhaps glue. Other than these annoyances, it works well and does what I need. Oh, and there's one other issue what were they thinking in using a mini rather than micro USB cable for power? If you ever want to just plug the phone in but hold it in your hand rather than using the cradle you are out of luck! I haven't seen anything better for the Evo, and you can work around these issues but for this much money I really would have expected something a bit more polished.

This is a well designed product except for a few things. When using the speaker phone, people say that they can't understand what I'm saying so the Car Kit must cover up the microphone of the phone. The hands free phone was one of the main reasons I purchased this device. It is a two handed removal process because the whole "docking holster" comes loose when you lift the phone out. A dab of glue would fix that but then it could only be used for the EVO (assuming there are other inserts for other phones). Substantially built, strong, very adjustable. I'd give it 5 stars if it weren't for the problems I mentioned above.

I'm a smoker, and I noticed when you smoke like I do and never clean the inside part of the windshield the mount falls of.

Simple solution is to lick the suction cup before sticking it on the windshield.

I like the heft and stability of the device. Solid, easy mount. You can orient it in profile or landscape mode easily, just be cognizant that the power cord plugs in on the right-hand side of the unit and the contact is not the same as in the bottom of your EVO, so you're not able to utilize your existing EVO car cord.

Seidio warrants their power products for 180 days. About one month ago, my mount began overheating the battery while charging, causing the unit to shut down. In the last week, the unit has stopped charging altogether. Total life span = 225 days. Upon contacting the company, Seidio has responded, stating that they only warrant the product for 180 days and that I was welcome to "Please visit our online store for more selections". I will be searching for alternate products from other manufacturers.

Radio Shack Pro 97 Triple-Trunking Handheld Scanner

I've owned this scanner for a little while now. I love the alpha-numeric labeling system, lets me know what agency I'm listening to.

I live in an area where I can listen to 5+ agencies so this is very helpful. The bank system also works quite well for turning off things I don't want to listen to at any particulat time. (Usually have police, ambulance, air, fire, and others in separate banks).

I've been very happy with my purchase.

I wouldn't have looked this product up after many years of owning it, and signed in and gone through the trouble of reviewing it, if it didn't deserve a five star review. I've recently bought another radio, an actual NAV/COM trans-receiver for real world aviation use, and I still always keep my PRO-97 close by, because of it's amazing quality and list of features. It's never once had a problem after a good 5(ish?) years of owning it. There may be newer versions of it, I'm not sure, because I've owned the PRO-97 for a few years now. Anyway, the speaker volume can be VERY loud, in fact you'll probably startle yourself the first time you turn it on. It can be loud enough to take to airshows, turn up, and set close by so myself and the majority of people around me can hear it over passing aircraft. It also has a 3.5mm (standard) headphone jack on the top of it. It has an amazing 1000 channels you can program frequencies into...which is probably 900 more than I ever use. Takes four AA batteries in a convenient little double sided pack. I think in my 5 years of ownership, I've only replaced the batteries about twice. I've even fallen asleep with it on during power outages a few times. It has an AC jack on the side that somehow seems to juice up the batteries even though they're non rechargeable... The construction is very solid. It's durable enough for someone clumsy like me. It's mainly a high quality plastic, no metal, so it's extremely light weight. High quality metal attachment for the antenna, it's not gonna break off, ever. It can scan up and down, through the frequencies. You can set priorities, so if an important frequency comes alive, it will immediately switch to it. It has a quick NOAA button that gets you on the nearest NOAA frequency in 1 button press with no need to program/save/tune any frequencies for it.

If I had to say anything bad about this product, it would be the squelch volume while in scan mode. If you're in scan mode, and you have the squelch too low, the radio will blank out at a frequency of 000.00 and give off an extremely loud hiss, rather than stopping at the frequency it's scanning over. I'd also like to see a tune dial. The only real way to tune a frequency (that I know of) is to punch in the frequency manually, rather than just stepping up a few khz with a knob. There may be a way to do this, but it still isn't on it's own dial/button, which isn't that big of a complaint and not worth taking a star off.

All in all, it's simply the best scanner that you can get for both experienced AND new users. It's easy to learn the basics of just picking it up and setting a frequency. A simple scan button that'll just scan through until it finds an active frequency (which can be annoying when there's constant buzzing repeaters in your area that isn't technically talking, but is still an actively transmitting radio the scanner will indeed stop on). It has all kinds of advanced trunking functions and bank settings, if you're an advanced user. Nice sized lettering on the display. It's a good tool, and worth the money. I chose not to rate it for "ease of use", because it honestly depends on your level of experience with scanners. If you've never used a scanner before, it'll take a little reading to learn how to program it. It was my first scanner, however I am a pilot and I do know a thing or two about VHF AM and FM, yet simple things like saving a new frequency took about 5 minutes to learn. Remember it's a VHF radio, and VHF signals can't travel through simply anything. If you have a hard time listening to the radio (music) in your house, odds are you have thick walls, and may need to take your scanner outside to pick up distant/low altitude signals. You may find you can easily hear aircraft in the sky, but have a hard time hearing the traffic controller on the ground if there's many obstacles between you and him. It all depends on your location relative to the source, especially distance and elevation. For example, I can hear police chatter easily in my own home, but I need to step outside to hear the ATIS at the airport a few cities south of me, despite being 200 feet higher in elevation.

Tip Holding your scanner improves it's reception, but ONLY if you hold it around the main scanner itself. You may think touching the antenna improves reception, like the radio in your home, but it won't work well. Grip it around the screen level area if you're having a hard time. Touching the antenna seems to draw energy from it. Also, if you're in a vehicle, touch the top of your antenna to a metal surface *near the roof* of the car. You'll be able to use the car's very powerful radio antenna and surface area to dramatically improve range. :-)

Make sure you set some time aside and go over the instructions thoroughly, it's worth it. The unit is actually easy to use but the instructions (well written) must be read first. Reception is great.

Can program 1000 channels, easily access frequencies, can block out frequencies when scanning, and lots more. I primarily use it for railfanning and am happy with it.

Remember....read the instructions...read the instructions...read the instructions. (They can be easily found online if you want. I bought a used unit that had the instructions on DVD. It was easier to go to the internet and download it. Just use Google search.)

I love, love, love this charger! I bought the car charger right after I bought my new phone. A smart phone must have a car charger. The first week was great. I plugged my phone in and could drive knowing it was charging. Shortly after i noticed that the red light wasn't always lit, meaning it wasn't plugging into my jeep very well. It just won't stay in. And now i'm seeing that the charger doesn't stay in the phone very well. I have to wiggle to plug and basically cradle the phone in my hand while i drive to ensure that it charges. Not a great thing to do with 2 new items. I baby my phone, and the charger never leaves my jeep. I never let anyone else use it and i am now stuck with an accessory that won't do it's job.

Well I purchased this for my HTC Inspire about 3 months ago (in April) and what a terrible purchase.

First Problem: Yes the cord is meant to stretch say 2 feet, but the holders that keep the plug in the charger port are so loose that it will come out whenever you barely pull it.

Second Problem: Now that I have had this charger for about three months, it will not even charge my phone anymore! The light on the charger is lit, but my phone receives no charge.

As the adage goes, you get what you pay for, and with this charger you get a poor quality charger that is not worth the price they even sell it at.

I received this charger a few days ago, and really like it. I used to have a no name micro usb charger for my phone, and it was only 500mah, which for non-techies means that it charges very slowly. The models I own and use daily are my oldest in the fleet from xantrex (prosine 1000) Xantrex Technologies Prosine 1000 Prosine 1,000 to 1,500-Watt Power Inverter, their newer, true sine lower cost model the prowatt SW1000 Prowatt SW1000 1000W True Sinewave Inverter and the most recent low cost true sine 1000W that can't do 1000W from sunforce Sunforce 11240 1000-Watt Pure Sine Wave Inverter with Remote Control. I've used these extensively in remote power operation of tools and equipment where no AC was available in service vehicles.

This model from Xantrex is atypical in that it produces "modified sine wave" power instead of "true sine wave power" like most of thier inverters. The end result to you is that some devices don't mind modified sine wave power, while others can be destroyed by it. Typically modified sine wave power is alot cheaper to produce than true sine wave power, but items with coils like florescent ballasts, transformers, even the big heavy wall transformers will overheat quickly between an hour and 3 hours. Motors run hot and prolonged use will burn them out, but in an RV say a coffee grinder is only run for a few seconds and doesn't suffer any damage from the modified sine wave. Other sensitive devices are clocks which see the sudden voltage change instead of the smooth voltage change of a sine wave as being a zero crossing, so they count the extra 2 steps in making the waveform as seconds and run 2, 3, or even 6 times faster than normal depending on the clock and inverter. Audio devices powered by 110V like clock radios, ipod adapters with speakers, stereos, all lack filtering for the odd harmonics of 60hz such as 180 hz, 300 hz, 420 hz, and on up. When run from modified sine waves these sound like alot of low frequency hum is comming out.

You can research "modified sine wave" on google to further pursue it's good points and bad points, but for this review just know it's NOT the same as what comes from your house outlet or a generator.

Also understand that any inverter of this size requires 1/2 1.5 Amps just idle. In the Xantrex pro-sine series they installed a powersave function that when not being used (i.e. all 117VAC stuff is off) the inverter checks every 2 seconds to see if anything was switched on, and if so it stays running until the load is switched off. This helps to maximize your runtime on battery and the prosine units can be ordered with the automatic cutover feature offered in this inverter. The sunforce unit has another cute trick a keyfob transmitter that turns the inverter on/off manually.

The good news about these inverters is that its an optimal switching point for an RV. It can take input power from an RV park or generator and when that is lost because the cord is pulled or the genset runs out of fuel, the inverter kicks in automatically and takes the load. This is a major plus for RV use where power may come from many sources or none at all sometimes.

When producing power from battery I recommend investing in the optima D31M blue top deep cycle battery or 2 in parallel so as to maximize runtime Optima Batteries 8052-161 D31M BlueTop Dual Purpose Battery. These can be drained without damage to the battery while a normal battery may only tolerate total discharge a dozen times in its life before fallout from plate damage collects at the bottom and shorts out 1 cell ruining the battery. I recommend 2 batteries in parallel to share the load because if you approach 1000 watts out, you will see currents in the 105-115 A continuous range from the battery. By putting 2 in parallel connected with heavy (#4) wire you can cut this to 50-60A per battery making them run longer, in fact more than twice as long due to the lower discharge rate. You can also tie into the engine's alternator to source power if it is running but use a battery isolator Warn Industries 28022 120-Amp Dual Battery Isolator to ensure your inverter doesn't leave you without the ability to start the engine by draining power from the engine battery.

In summary I chose all of my inverters to output true sinewave power just like you get at work or home. "Modified sine wave" power can be used for simple loads but read up on it with google prior to choosing it to wire into your RV. You don't want to smell your ipod adapter melting after an hour's use on the inverter or find that setting the microwave for 10 minutes gets done in just 3 because the clock runs fast on modified sine wave power. Also keep in mind 100+ amp current needs #4 wire or better depending on the distance. Preferably keep the 2 batteries and inverter all next to each other so the runs are < 3 feet of wire. If you feel that you want genuine sinewave power in your RV check out the options to the prosine series. They make this exact design in TRUE sinewave power like you get from the utility company including a power save function and with a cutover feature just like this unit has. The only difference is your power will be as good or better than what comes from your outlet at home.

I purchased this inverter to be part of the replacement system for my 15 year old Trace modified sine wave inverter charger. The new system consists of this inverter, a 600 watt Prowatt inverter and a 20 amp Xantrex True Charge 2 charger. I chose this brand because of the outstanding performance of my original Trace inverter/charger. I chose to go with a component system this time so that I could replace indiviual pieces in the event of failure. I have lived off grid for 15 years and my solar/wind system ties into my trailer's original wiring. The front panel readout is another nice detailchoose between input and load so I can see exactly how much my appliances are pulling. I have a VERY small battery bank (one 12v L-16 type battery) and so far these two inverters combined do not pull enough current idling to see an apreciable difference between this and the old inverter which went into a "rest" state when no load was applied.

It took a while to get used to it but it works great...the last reviewer probably doesn't know how to turn up the volume...it's not intuitive. After I learned how to use it I love it...I just leave my phone in my pocket turn the vr3 on and it pairs right away. It's plenty loud if you turn the volume to high..The battery lasts a very long time. I had a bluetooth headset and hated having that thing on my ear and the battery life was so much shorter. Receiving a call, just touch a button and talk away...it has caller id...I have a Razor phone and use the voice calling feature of the phone through the vr3. Liked it so much I bought a second unit for my other car...could have just kept the one and just transfered it car to car but it's so handy I wanted a second one. The only cons are I wish you could download your address book to it so it would show the name of the person calling and it would of been nice to get a 110volt charger along with the 12v car charger...I would recommend it highly. Those who don't take the time to learn it will never get it.

My husband bought one of these for both of our cars. I hated it. It just was not intuitive to use. I finally figured it out but half the time, esp. on the freeway, I could not hear the person calling.

To be fair my husband says he likes his. He got me a plantronics headset for Christmas and it works so much more easily. By comparison I love it.

You need to download the manual from VR2 and if you turn it off when you get out of the car then you will automatically reconnect when turned on. Bought this item from another source and had to return it after only 5 days. First it was hard to connect to my cell phone. Second, every time I would leave the car it had to be reconnected to the cell phone, even though I left it on. Third, could not answer a call with it unless I pushed the answer button on my cell phone. Fourth, the speaker would fade out when talking. Returned the item and will get a credit for it. We bought these for our children to have for Christmas instead of purchasing "toy" two-way radios. We figured they would play and then tire of using them and we would at least have a good set to have for our own personal use. The kids have not tired of playing yet but these are tough, well-made, clear and long range radios. I have no idea if the 22 mile estimate will work in the rolling hills around our home but it definitely caries long enough to use while out on hikes. Many hikes are in and around streams so the water resistant characteristic is a big plus. Happy.

The Uniden GMR2238 Units work well around our grounds but you will never get the 22 mile range they offer unless you are in a desert or on open calm water. They work well in small buildings and areas about 1/4 of a mile.

Purchased for my 2000 Toyota 4Runner with 3 120W 12V outlets for use on long trips etc., based on positive reviews here. The 120V AC output of the charger works well for my Lenovo t61p and a friend's Toshiba Satellite laptops. I've used it for about 2 hrs since my purchase so far. Construction is of decent quality plastic and the product feels solid.

However, there are a few quirks you should be aware of. Minor, but nuisances nonetheless, and enough to subtract two stars from the rating.

1) The click-angle head of the product is weak. It cannot support the weight of the product outlet head and a plug at an upwards angle -it will creep downwards as you drive with your car's driving vibrations. The click head more or less holds its place when used horizontally.

2) The click-angle head's rotational range is narrow. The range or motion shown on the product picture is its maximum range of motion. Due to the adapter's large size, it may not fit your vehicle if the 12V outlet is right behind your shifter, etc.

3) The cooling fan is loud during operation, even when only using the USB outlets. The noise is bearable on the highway amongst highway vehicle noise (and my truck's on the loud side by today's standards), but the constant whine is unpleasant during street driving. You should purchase a separate adapter for dedicated use with USB devices. I think the noise is about equivalent to a vacuum cleaner behind a thick door or 2.

I would consider a corded inverter instead of this product for space use flexibility and placement muffling -the noise will be far less obnoxious say, under your legs than on the dash console; even if the other product is equivalently loud.

Well made and solid. I am using it to power some small motors like air compressors and electronics while camping. I am not sure if it will power larger equipment as it does run off the battery. Just to be safe I run the engine while I use the lamps and compressor.

I purchased this converter to power a uniden video monitor in my car. I'm using it as a baby car seat monitor.
