This product works and it matches the description given. It won't drain your car battery if you don't leave it plugged in when you aren't driving. That is just common sense though, because any auto accessory should be unplugged when you aren't driving. Not doing so can cause a fire (hey, its actually happened).

I purchased this charger last summer and it worked fine for about 6 months and now it either won't connect at all to charge of I have to fidget with it to find a spot in the power port where the red light might come on. I'm buying a new one today...it definitely won't be this one.

I purchased this item to be able to let my son charge his mp3 in his room instead of always having to start up the pc for it. Sadly, I'm still in that boat.

This item arrived today, and after plugging it into the wall and having it successfully charge his Sansa, we unplugged it to take it to his room. Upon unplugging it, though, the plastic around the plug eng came apart at the seam. It essentially fell apart in our hands. I'm excedingly disappointed in this order. So I am now in the position to once again having to look for another charger. Save your money and avoid this one. It's junk.

We own several Palm Pre's and wanted to use this dual charger to power them up in our car. Unfortunately this device can't provide sufficient power to charge 2 at once. It can charge one Palm Pre at a time, but can't charge up 2 at a time.

If you have cell phones, or devices that need 800-1,000ma each, this charger can't do it. Total power out seems to be about 800ma split between the two USB ports.

Other than being weak in the power department, the unit appears to be well constructed, it does fit 2 USB cords comfortably, and has a charge indicator light so you know when its in use.

This is a cheap way of charging any device that will charge via a regular USB port. I have used it in my car for several months without a problem. It did a fine job with my AT&T Tilt phone and my iPod.

Before you invest in this or any other standalone USB charger, you should make sure that your device will charge via USB cable alone. Many phones (Motorola Razr is one) these days have what looks like a standard USB connection but require special software or adapters before they will charge.

I got this for about $5 or $10 at Wal-Mart. Great investment.

The new updated unit arrived today from Aims and it works great out of the box.

My Craftsman Generator at 5500 Watt 6500 Watt peak charges at the 90 amp rate as it should.

The smaller Champion 3500 Watt just can't do it.

I would recommend getting a generator of at least (6000 Watt)the same output as the inverter.

We are 100% off the grid and this unit is working great.

I can say that I would now definitely recommend unit to anyone in the market for a great 240 Volt inverter charger.

I have been in contact with Aims support on 2-25-13.

We have since changed a few parts which did not correct the issue with this particular inverter.

Aims support is and have been excellent throughout this experience and have shipped me a new unit to replace the defective one. I will update my generator testing after I get it installed.

Their comment prompted me to call in to support and inquire about the new upgrade.

They are shipping me a new board which is designed to support a wider input range to support generator AC charging.

I will be posting an update as soon as it is tested.

I have to say the support was great originally and still seems to be.

Don't be fooled into buying this for an off grid application. UPDATE Below.

This unit came in a box that looked like it was dragged instead of transported inside a truck. (refused to sign for UPS Delivery) Tried to install as no visible damage on the surface.

The manufacturer is filing a claim with UPS and shipping me a replacement. I will update this review as the process evolves.

I spent hours with support (they seemed to be genuinely interested in getting this up and running) to get the inverter connected.

After connected I found out that I was mislead by an uninformed salesman who told me I could charge the batteries with my new Honda EU2000 120 v generator which was incorrect.

I then tried to charge the batteries with my Craftsman 5500 watt generator.

This was also a bust as the inverter was too picky about the power being delivered and would never go to line power to start the charge process. This was a 12 year old generator.

I gave up and went to TSC and bought a 3rd generator a 3500 watt Champion.

This generator would get the inverter to switch to line power and start what was indicated as a fast charge.

This fast charge never put any power in my batteries over two days of trying on gen power.

I am optimistic that will be resolved, but I am initially disappointed with this unit.

The worst part of this is that I spent 6 hours on support on a Friday before a long weekend so I am without it for at least 3 days before I can even get support. 24/7 support would be nice on a $1800 unit.

The manual for the inverter and is poorly written mostly due to a bad translation.

UPDATE:

The new unit was shipped freight.

I got it and hooked it up. Looked promising.

It performs great as an inverter. I have still had issues charging batteries with it.

I have now tried the following.

1. A new EU6500is Honda which outputs too much power to be seen as line power at 253-257 volts. This just shows as abnormal line power and never switches out of inverter mode and never starts a charge. I was able to rent this for a day luckily.

2. A new Champion 3500w which will switch to line power, but falls out of the range for frequency.

3. My 12 year old Craftsman 5500w which with a lot of adjusting will switch to line power and start a charge, but can only charge at the lowest charge setting and takes hours and hours to charge. It also kicks out of line mode if the fridge or well calls for power.

My best charging option up to this point is a 30A 24V charger that I bought at NAPA for an additional $350 and connect to my EU2000 120v Honda generator.

This will at least consistently put power into the system while in use.

I would not recommend this to others.

I would buy a straight inverter and then buy a charger since the input is so picky that it doesn't charge at the rate needed to make it practical.

Aims Tech Support has now confirmed that this unit requires line power not generator power to charge batteries.

That is great since this was purchased for an off grid application based on sales pitch from the inverter store.

I purchased this inverter at the advice of a friend who found it online. I was a little hesitant to buy it based on the review on Amazon, as I use it in an off-grid cabin. I took a chance and bought the unit, after Theinverterstore.com Sales team explained that the unit had been upgraded with a new input range to work with most generators.

I am happy that I bought this unit and it is working Great! I am off-grid with a generator and have had no issues; it runs everything in my cabin without issue.

By the way I am using it with a generator and an array of 100 watt solar panels.

I would recommend the unit.

Goal Zero 11102 Sherpa 120 Battery

This is a superbly designed and built product, at least from the couple of days I've had it. I'll update the review if my impressions change.

One thing I want to mention right away: the power pack itself is only 2.2 pounds in weight. For some reason various sources of this information show anywhere between 4 and 5 pounds. All the other accessories that come in the box are lightweight as well. The included AC adapter with cords is very lightweight and small and the 12V cigarette plug is as well. Too often we find that the main object of interest, like a laptop for example, has an attractive weight specified but comes with a massive AC brick and cables that weigh as much as the thing itself. Not so here.

Physically, however, the Sherpa 120 is quite a big thing, about the size of a Webster's dictionary (if any of you remember those :-) or a really big Fodor's travel book. Make sure this meets your needs. It is not a petite device.

So far I have used the power pack to test out running a ResMed S9 CPAP machine (CPAP only, not humidifier/heater) with an inverter, and it powers it successfully for a full 8 hours on a full charge. That pretty much meets the 120 watt-hour spec, as the machine averages around 15 watts (including loss in the inverter and S9's AC adapter). A full charge from AC takes 4 hours as specified. Construction quality is first rate.

Only one issue so far: there is no indication of how to charge the power pack from a 12V source, although that charging method is given in the specifications. The charging plug is labeled as needing 15.3V. I will have to hunt down how to do that. I would have appreciated a 12V plug cable for charging in the box.

A potential issue is how TSA treats this. This device qualifies as a "larger" spare lithium ion battery and, judging by the watt-hour rating, has about 10 grams of equivalent lithium content (ELC) -. This is perfectly acceptable as a carry on according to DOT guidelines (see -up to two such "spare" batteries with ELC up to 25 grams may be in carry-on luggage; cannot be in checked luggage). But the particular TSA inspector at a given gate on a given day may have other ideas.

UPDATE: To charge this device from 12VDC source, you have to buy a separate adapter: a male cigarette to 4.7mm adapter, from Goalzero.com. It's $15 so not too bad. Also I'm not sure why Amazon had to delete the links I put in the main review -they were to dot.gov web pages showing info about FAA treatment of li-ion batteries.

FURTHER UPDATE (7/14/11): Just back from a 3-week African trip which was the reason for buying this battery in the first place, to power my CPAP machine when we did not have electricity available at night. It worked perfectly and TSA as well as foreign airline security inspections never even looked at it. Total non-issue. I even used it on the plane to power the machine (clear this ahead of time with the airline though).

This review is for the Goal Zero Sherpa 120 battery Goal Zero Sherpa 120 Battery.

I bought this battery to use on a backwoods trip to run a CPAP machine while I sleep. Since this would be running a medical device, I felt it was important to know I could trust the system. I carefully measured (using a Kill-a-Watt) the power my CPAP was consuming and knew that in good conditions the battery as found in the Sherpa 120 should last nearly 3 nights, so the solar panels wouldn't need to fully charge the system in a single day. I have also measured the CPAP (using a Watts-Up) when running directly from 12v and it consumes about 30 watts a night (vs 37watts a night on 120v).

In field testing and subsequent follow up this is how I would rate the battery. The battery nicely holds a good charge and delivers the full capacity before going into a sleep state to protect itself from over discharging. I used the Nomad 27 solar panels to charge it and found that given my needs they were plenty large enough to top it off every day. To protect the battery which is a very key component to the system (in fact the one piece you must have), spend the extra few bucks on the silicone protective cover.

The battery holds as much power as advertised, I've measured it several times and it continues to perform well. The Goal Zero system connects and works well. The only plug that seems slightly loose is the output plug on the battery. The other connectors are nice and sufficient. The output one should snap to give you extra security that your device will remain powered. For portable operation focus on using 12v loads directly and make sure you are running your necessary equipment as efficiently as possible to maximize your run times. If you can get away without using an inverter, all of your devices will run longer from a fixed battery capacity, plus your weight will be physically lighter.

One important thing to note, if you leave the battery unattended for 30 days or more, it goes into a deep sleep even shutting down the display and internal circuits (to conserve power). When you turn it on again it'll appear discharged (the screen shows only 1 bar) but it really is holding the charge well. You can measure with a Watts-Up to see the voltage, but the logic they use to calculate how much charge remains needs to know the last total charge and it can't know that until you recharge it. If you plug it into the solar or wall charger for a bit (~20 min if was off for 30 days) it'll snap back and realize that it's actually fully charged. Tip: If you have a system and want to see what this deep sleep state looks like, you can simulate this for yourself by removing and then replacing the fuse on the back of the unit.

*** Update: July 2,2012 I've used this battery on dozens of trips, camping, canoe trips, even a dive trip (on the boat) and it continues to work great. I've found I use the USB port often now to recharge my additional devices (cell phone, GoPro camera etc). This has been a very dependable battery and I'm glad I have it. This battery along with my 12v charger and solar panels gives me great freedom while maintaining power in the field.

To start let me tell you.......I love this product......it work better then I thought it would.......seems like it takes forever to have to recharge it.......that all being said.....the third time I recharged it.... the battery had a melt down......know I didnt send in my warrenty card and thats my fault....I dont hold this against the company....but after it had its melt down I got to looking on the web.....and found that many people have had the same probelm with these batterys.......know if they are melting down cause of a defect in the product....I think the company should replace the battery with or without the warrenty card......so needless to say I wont be wasting another 300 bucks on this battery........

You might get lucky and get one that doesnt melt down and I can tell you......your going to love it....if it works.......just send in your warrenty card.......everything I have read on the web says they good about replacing.......

I own the Nomad 27, Sherpa 120, Sherpa UI and Light-A-Life. Have been using the power pack to charge my phone (Galaxy Note) and power the lamp (Light-A-Life) during camping, can't seems to be able to empty the pack. [Note: Although I mention a 220v circuit in the video review, it is connected to a 208-240v 40amp double pole breaker.]

We bought the Siemens 30-A Bottom Fed VersiCharge because it fits our lifestyle better than the 110v charger included in the car. I typically use the car in the morning for some errands and my wife uses it for about a 15 mile r/t to work and back in the afternoon. So I usually have a charging window of a couple of hours to top off our 2013 Chevy Volt before it goes out on the road again. The 110v charger would not get it back up to a full charge in time.

Since I did a video review, I'll just mention a few things here I didn't have time to include in the review.

What I like:

Well made, sealed for outdoor use, although I have an inside installation.

Feels sturdy -the cables are thick and appear well insulated.

Relatively quiet. When you're near it you can hear a faint electrical hum, but unlike some other units reviewed here, there is nothing that would ever bother you. It makes a firm electrical "click" when you plug in into the car (you can hear it in the video review) but nothing like an alarming bang that other devices seem to make.

The large "halo" surrounding the device lets you see the charging status from a considerable distance. This can be disabled if desired.

The charge plug inserts and removes from my Volt firmly, but easily.

What could be better:

The charging plug is somewhat difficult to remove from the holder in the charger. You have to press very firmly on the rubber-covered button and pull it away with some force. This may get better over time.

The wall mounting bracket is plastic! Although it shows no sign of coming loose, hanging a 21 lb. electrical device on this flimsy bracket does not inspire confidence. (The plastic may be due to some requirement related to an outdoor electrical connection, but it should be thicker plastic.)

The device wobbles a bit on the wall because it does not quite fit flush, due to the way the lag bolts go into the bracket. There is only a narrow vertical support, nothing horizontal. Not a big deal and it is on the wall securely.

I feel this charger is somewhat overpriced, especially compared to the one offered by GM, but it also seems to be a better charger. I personally think they are all overpriced.

Summary:

A fine charger with a three-year warranty. If there are any problems I'll update this review, but I expect it to work well for a long time. This is a 4.5 star review, but I'll bump it to 5 because Siemens is a reliable company and the warranty is excellent.

I purchased the Siemens VC30BLKB bottom feed EV charging station from Amazon. I chose this charger for four reasons. 1) It was capable of delivering up to 30 amps, which makes it somewhat future proof; 2) Unlike most of the other units, it comes with a three year warranty; 3) It comes in a NEMA 4 weatherproof enclosure (even though I am installing it indoors, I think this provides extra protection); 4) At the time I made my purchase, the cost was $200 less than the comparable charger from Leviton (although Amazon has since raised the price by $150).

Prior to receiving the charger, I read the manual on-line and installed a 40 amp dedicated circuit with a NEMA 6-50 female receptacle into my garage. Since my Nissan Leaf is only capable of accepting up to 16 amps, and since the Siemens charger has an internal adjustment to reduce the draw to 15 amps, I was hoping to have been able to use my existing dryer outlet. However, after speaking with Siemens Technical Support, I learned that the unit requires a dedicated 40 amp circuit regardless. I don't see any need to open the charger and perform the voltage adjustment since the charger that is built into the electric vehicle is capable of regulating the power.

Once the receptacle was installed, mounting the charger was very easy. You must find a stud in the wall capable of holding 20 lbs. A mounting bracket with a built-in template is included. The bracket is mounted to the stud with two lag screws. The charger slips into the bracket and is plugged into the receptacle. Once plugged into the wall the charger has an LED to indicate that power is available. Plug the J1772 connector into the car and charging will begin as indicated by a different LED. A third LED indicates if the charger is in a ready state, such as when it has been plugged in but is set to begin charging at a later time. There is a pause button on the Siemens charger, as well as the ability to delay the charging for 2, 4, 6, or 8 hours. This delay could come in handy if you want to charge at certain times, when the price of electricity is lower, or if you want to wait for your battery to cool down for a couple of hours before charging.

The charger is designed so that the cord wraps around it neatly. I look forward to many years of use for this device.

Great EVSE for our 2013 Nissan Leaf that supports up to a 6.6 kW draw. Car recharges about 24 miles per hour vs 5 mph using Nissan's included 120v trickle charger. A fully depleted battery will recharge to 100% in 4 hours vs 21 with the trickle charger. This makes it great for weekend errand trips throughout the day.

I chose this over the GE for the following reasons:

1) 20' cord vs 16

2) Smaller/Lighter

3) Charge delay feature

I was also pleased that the handle isn't white which will show off dirt over time. It's more of a light gray top with a black bottom.

Minor Con:

The connector is a little tight. You need to give it a good push for it to be properly seated to the connector. I'm hoping this'll get better over time.

The main reason I'm writing this is to say that my experience has been different than that of another reviewer that said this charger doesn't work with his RAV4 EV. I have only had about 5 opportunities to charge our 2012 RAV4 EV and so far this charger has worked great.

This charger's particular ability to adjust it's output is very important for me because we have a completely off-grid solar electric system and 30 amps at 240 volts is not something we will be able to do all the time. Your charge rate selections are 100%, 75%, 50% and 25%. I have adjusted the charge rate to 75% and 50% of it's 30 amp max and the charger charges at 5.4 KW and 3.6 KW, respectively. For us, this is a very important feature.

The slightly longer 20' cord is handy for our situation, pretty simple installation. It would not be out of the question to undo the one screw that holds the rather light charger on the (somewhat flimsy) mounting bracket and take the charger with you to some destination as long as the correct receptacle is there. This is assuming your installation is not hard-wired.

A few months later: Still charging our 2012 RAV4 flawlessly. The power output adjustment actually has a setting below 25%. I've used all the settings for a variety of reasons. Very happy with this charger.

Update (5/21/2013)

I have finally received the replacement unit today after calling Siemen every morning.

According to the support they were having back-order problem so couldn't ship the unit until now.

Surprisingly it's brand new but not refurbished, and there are some nice change with the new unit.

I noticed there are few improvement in the newer version I received.

1. The clip on the EVSE Plug has been extended, so it's much easier to plug into the car

2. The hose at the base is also increased in size, so the plug will no longer stuck.

3. In generally, the Versicharge has been modified to make the usage much easier now.

So the product is getting better now, you can expect Nissan Stock EVSE usage experience.

But at the same time, you will still need to keep your Nissan EVSE just in case.

If the unit break, do expect few weeks of going back and forth to receive the replacement unit.

Update (5/15/2013)

Unfortunately, after less than half year the unit breaks.

After a night of charging the unit always has the fault light ON.

Contacting customer support is a nightmare as there is no process handling the problem.

At first I had to be transferred three times before somebody is willing to help.

Then I had to call back everyday for 4 days to finally get a hold of person in charge of Versicharge unit.

He promised me to send me a new unit with return shipping label so they can look at the failure.

However, it's already two weeks and I have not heard anything from them.

I called back again and the process only started from the beginning because I can't reach the Versicharge team.

So it's has been three weeks I am without a LV2 charge, and I still don't have any idea when I'll get the issue fixed.

With the horrible experience, I no longer recommending purchasing the unit.

When I was first in the market for Level 2 EVSE, this product was not released to public yet.

But after few weeks of disappointment with other unit, I decided to give this a try because of few reasons.

1. 30 Amp of current, more future proof but not as much as 32 Amp of some unit

2. The unit has NEMA 6-50 plug to the Wall Outlet, so it fits my existing installation

3. The J1772 cable is 20 ft long, a bit longer than many standard 18 ft unit

4. The unit has a nice cable management. You can wrap the cable around the unit and place for J1772 plug in.

5. The price was $250 cheaper compare to other brand, but it is no longer true anymore

6. And as nice surprise, the unit actually comes with Wall Mount Bracket so I didn't have to spend extra.

When I received the unit, the product box was opened and damaged because there was no shipping box.

I can see the contain was dropping out of box during shipping and the UPS worker just tape the box again.

The shipping protection could be a lot better, but thankfully the unit still works so I didn't have to return it.

Once installed, I find the J1772 plug to be a bit stiff and hard to plug/unplug, but few trick solves the issue.

First, because the unique design of the J1772 plug, it doesn't go in like the Nissan EVSE unit.

When insert the J1772 plug, you'll need to give small amount of force to the upward dimension.

Without the upward force, the plug goes in but the J1772 won't clip. The charger indicates it's plug in but won't charge.

Second, try apply some oil or Vaseline to the outside ring of the plug, then plug in and out few times.

This can help smooth the plug friction and make unplug a lot easier.

So with the two thing in mind, the unit work very well.

The cable is thin and light, so it is easy to hang around and carry with me.

The included wall Mount Bracket is also easy to install. We just need two screw into the pole to get it right.

The Power cable to the wall is also a bit longer than the other unit, so it's a lot easier to go into outlet as well.

Overall, I'm happy with the purchase and looks forward to use the unit for a long time.

I bought the car charger right after I bought my new phone. A smart phone must have a car charger. The first week was great. I plugged my phone in and could drive knowing it was charging. Shortly after i noticed that the red light wasn't always lit, meaning it wasn't plugging into my jeep very well. It just won't stay in. And now i'm seeing that the charger doesn't stay in the phone very well. I have to wiggle to plug and basically cradle the phone in my hand while i drive to ensure that it charges. Not a great thing to do with 2 new items. I baby my phone, and the charger never leaves my jeep. I never let anyone else use it and i am now stuck with an accessory that won't do it's job.

This charger doesn't work in my car. It was inexpensive and now I know why I won't even spend the money to return it as the postage is going to cost just as much as the charger as itself.

The charger didn't work. Fuse blew as soon as I plugged it in. Changed the fuse, same result. I didn't return it because I didn't want to pay the freight.

Well I purchased this for my HTC Inspire about 3 months ago (in April) and what a terrible purchase.

First Problem: Yes the cord is meant to stretch say 2 feet, but the holders that keep the plug in the charger port are so loose that it will come out whenever you barely pull it.

Second Problem: Now that I have had this charger for about three months, it will not even charge my phone anymore! The light on the charger is lit, but my phone receives no charge.

As the adage goes, you get what you pay for, and with this charger you get a poor quality charger that is not worth the price they even sell it at.

The two panels made it through shipping just fine. I tested the output simply with a multimeter and it was in spec. I hooked the panels in parellel on a gazebo roof and they have been keeping two batteries charged and running the lights, fan and some speakers well for about two months now. I would recommend them.

I was skeptical when I saw this charger at my local retailer, I mean.... These chargers never worked for me in the past and I had all makes and Models. This one works, I have bought over 15 in the past 18 months just on WHAT they can do. I got them for stocking stuffers last year.

Anyways I think I can help a couple of you with your problems.

The person who said there wasn't enough amps to charge their cell phone.... I'm leaning towards LIAR.

The industry standard is 0.5 amps for cell phones. I guessing you didn't have the right cable (Data Only) or

you didn't have it plugged in the right way.

You NEED a Data/Sync cable in order to charge your phone through a USB power outlet. Not just one or the other and they do sell 3 kinds. Data, Sync & Data/Sync.

If using the 12 volt option, you MUST make sure you have pushed this charger ALL THE WAY IN.

The nipple at the tip is the ground, like everyone knows, if it's not grounded it won't work.

It takes some muscle but once it's in, leave it alone.

120 Volt operation, this one was a little tricky, I plugged mine into a wall outlet and it didn't work.

I was showing how great it was to my Dad, I was mortified when he laughed at me.

Then I realized his house had wall outlets connected to light switches and begin to turn them all on in the area.

Red light came on and he was impressed.

One other thing, My kids have NDSi XL's. I found Data/Sync (Charging) cables for the NDS and they can now charge their DS's through this USB port on the road or in the house... It's not what you know, it's WHO you know...

Got this device yesterday but it isn't powerful enough to even charge my cell phone (Motorola V365). Output amps are 0.5A, which apparently isn't even enough for my phone to register it as connected to a charging source. Conveniently the output amps aren't listed in the description for this device...

I bought this after changing phone and noticing the car charger I had wasn't good. I've been using this for a few months and here's what I have on it:

Good things:

Great power. I've successfully charged an iPhone, a Galaxy S3, a BB Playbook and a Kindle with this. I can charge any 2 devices at the same time with no problems.

Just the right size. It's not too large to bother having it on all the time and not too small to make it difficult to remove from the car.

Not so good things:

The blue light it has is a little too bright when driving at night. I've fixed this by turning it to an angle where it doesn't bother me or covering it with something.

Bad things:

Nothing really bad with this! :)

I bought this to charge my Zune in my car. I liked the small size and price, but it doesn't work. The fit in the cigarette lighter is extremely loose; the charger slips out whenever the USB cord is removed which sucks. I don't know why, but my Zune won't even charge off of it. It doesn't recognize that it's plugged in. The overall build of the thing is cheap (which is expected), so even if it worked it wouldn't last long. There are better options here on Amazon.

Don't bother with this, keep looking.
