The Energizer 180W Cup inverter is a useful little gadget for powering a whole bunch of electronic devices on the go. It's important to be aware of its limitations, but 5 stars for the price and functionality.

There have been a bunch of reviews about how this works day-to-day, but since no one has yet discussed the technical aspects of the inverter it's worthwhile reviewing them instead.

First, while there's nothing in the documentation regarding how many amps this puts out, as this is rated 180W it presumably can supply up to 15A between the USB ports and the AC adapter. That's an important number, as most cigarette lighter fuses aren't rated above 15A. This means that this a. won't blow out your car fusebox and b. does have reasonable limits as to what devices can draw from it. However, the AC outlet has enough juice to successfully run most electronics short of something like a laser printer. This also includes a second adapter with direct-to-battery alligator clips if you're so inclined to bypass the cigarette lighter.

Second, the 2.1A draw for the USB ports is shared between all four ports. A 2.1A output on a single port will charge nearly anything quite quickly. However, if you have 4 devices plugged in, you're going to be running at 525 mA per device, which is actually not awful and more or less what USB 2.0 is rated at there are a bunch of nominal 'quick charger' adapters that provide this output. (Keep in mind that some older devices may require trickle charging at 200 mA, which this can't do.) Bottom line is that this will keep most modern devices at fairly stable charge levels while they're plugged in, but if you've drained the battery on 4 separate devices and plug them all in to recharge, it may take a while.

Third, this is a modified sine wave inverter, which at this price point is expected. (Pure sine inverters start at $200 and up.) For almost everything you'll likely plug into this device modified sine wave power is ok; you can't use something like an alarm clock or a drill, and you definitely wouldn't want to plug in very sensitive electronic equipment or an expensive stereo.

Finally, what's important to note about any DC-to-AC inverter with most 12V car batteries is that this is not something that you'll want to run with the engine off if you're going to use it for more than an hour or so. A standard 12V car battery isn't designed to repeatedly discharge to low levels, and doing so will dramatically shorten its life. If you really want to run an inverter off a 12V battery for extended periods of time, you're much better off replacing your lead acid battery with a deep cycle model that's designed to fully discharge. Otherwise, this is best either used for brief periods of time or when your engine is running.

Have been using for one week and unit works fine. It sits perfectly in cup holder of Lexus RX330. Feels well-built and solid. Heavy duty cable was bit difficult to get into cigarette lighter due to stiff wire prongs on either side of adapter plug. I wondered if they would go in at all but finally managed with alot of pressure...it's a tight fit. Conversely the two pronged plug which connects the cable to the unit fits loosely and does not seat firmly (SEE UDPATE BELOW). When initially plugged in, a red light on the top comes on and then turns blue when the unit is ready to use. I charge an iPad 4 or two cellphones along with the AC power brick for my laptop.

Regarding load capacity, there are limitations even though four USB ports and one AC port are provided. The USB ports are limited to a shared (total) capacity of 2.1 amps. This is okay for cellphones but recent iPads and other tablets may need the full 2.1 amps to charge correctly. The AC outlet specs indicate loads up to 180W continuous and surges up to 360W can be handled. Based on objective reviews of other inverters making similar claims I'd be somewhat dubious until someone does an independent certified test. Energizer provides no data on test conditions (SEE UPDATE BELOW).

Safety features are noteworthy though I haven't tested circuit loading/overheat protection. Under voltage (10.5V) and over voltage (15.5V) circuit cutoffs should protect this unit and your car battery. Despite these you can run down a car battery if not careful. Unit overheat sensors also provide additional protection. The owners booklet contains "Safety Guidelines" and "Warnings and Cautions". Please read them and adhere. These inverters are not toys but serious electrical devices which can damage auto electrical systems and do some serious personal harm.

Overall, I rate this unit Very Good. Very much recommended.

UPDATE 22 May 2013: I now rate this unit FIVE stars and EXCELLENT. I've changed my rating and title but leave the body of my review much unchanged so you can see how fast Energizer responds to customer concerns. I was contacted immediately after posting this review by a very knowledgeable Energizer Customer Support Rep...impressive! He wanted details on the connector issue. Turns out I was not pushing the connector cable into the inverter unit with enough force. Once I did this the connector seated very firmly. I was initially concerned about breaking something...no worry.

We also discussed the max wattage and power specs. I will quote..."Regarding the claims, this inverter was actually tested by a third party lab METLAB, as you will see on the bottom of the unit the label had the MET mark which is in compliance to UL458 for the US and CSA22.2 for Canada." Extensive testing backs up the claim this unit can output 180 Watts continuously for an extended period without overheating.

In summary, I'm impressed with Energizer's quick response and assistance. I'm now even more impressed with my inverter.

This is a thoughtfully designed nice piece of equipment which delivers what it promises, but there are limitations. An iPad charger is unlike most other USB chargers in that it delivers 2.1 Amps (or 10.5Watts) in order to properly and promptly charge the device; obviously with this 2.1A charger, an iPad will use up all the available current by itself, making it sort of pointless to plug in other devices simultaneously. I tried this out by plugging an iPad 3, iPad Mini and an iPhone into this unit and watching video on the iPad. While when it started, the devices claimed to be charging, but they quickly figured out they were not and lost the lightning bolt battery icon, or got the "Not Charging" label where the battery typically would be. So, just because you have 4 USB ports, doesn't mean you can charge 4 devices. Far from it. You should be able to charge 4 low power devices simultaneously as standard USB devices draw at most 0.5A apiece.

Installation was quick. It popped right into my Civic's cup holder, and while the power plug was a bit stiff getting into the cigarette lighter port, it did go in with a bit of firmness. Fine for charging multiple cell phones on road trips.

I spend a lot of time commuting. Some device is always running out of juice. This Energizer Cup Inverter is an amazing solution. It fits into a cup holder so now I don't have cables draped all over the place. Its 110 outlet charges my computer before I get on a plane and is perfect for devices that have their own special charger (like the Xoom tablet) instead of USB charging. The device has 4 USB charging plugs as well. It has multiple protection circuits to protect it and you car. It is well vented and delivers plenty of juice.

I purchased this scanner to replace one that I had purchased at Radio Shack about 15 years ago. Comparing the two, is like comparing night and day. What I like the most about this scanner is its ease of use. It took me forever to figure out how to use all of the functions on my old scanner, while on this one I was up and running in just a few hours time. Also, the signal reception is superb, allowing me to easily scan not only police and fire departments, but also the National Weather Service, aircraft bands, ham radio bands, etc.

You can use either two AA batteries, or rechargeable batteries of the same size. I would recommend using regular AA alkaline batteries, as I've been using the scanner for over two months and have yet to have to replace them.

The bottom line is that this is a well made, reasonably priced scanner that comes with a lot of useful features and is extremely easy to use. I give it 5 stars.

I eventually settled on this model because once you get this large the "automatic" feature seems to be harder to find, but this one has it. Otherwise you're setting an amperage (like 40A) and a time, and you need to get it right or risk cooking the battery. This removes that risk (unless you choose to use the manual modes, which are all still there).

Decent quality, but it won't likely be an heirloom you pass down through the generations. My first one arrived caved in (and the box was undamaged). Of course Amazon handled that surperbly, but it still added a few days until I had a properly working unit.

This model has both voltage and amperage gauges, and they're analog.

Keep in mind that bigger is not always better. Even though this is rated at putting out 300A, I can't get a normal car battery to take more than 100 or so at best. I presume that's a function of the internal resistance of the battery, but there is indeed a limit to how fast you can charge a lead acid battery. 300A might be overkill for automotive stuff (but might be handy for large trucks, campers, golf cars, etc).

I bought this for my husband for Christmas. First time he used it was last week, and with the 4 Amp Auto feature, it overcharged/boiled a 1,000 amp RV battery. Trying to troubleshoot using another battery, it pegged out the voltage again and started overcharging that battery.

Called Schumaker for a warranty repair, they asked for the serial number. Once they looked it up, they told us the unit was out of warranty. Amazon sold a unit as 'new' with a 36 month warranty, even though it was 'new' in 2009 and now there is not a warranty! Amazon refuses to take it back, so we are going to the local news channel to let everyone know what a SCAM is being ran by Amazon!

This tool offers a range of useful features, which are not available on cheaper devices such as genuine quick charge and starting capabilities. The auto charge feature is better than it was on my last charger because it brings the state of charge close to full. Useful meters indicate what is happening.

I purchased this charger for a fire house to replace a similar, 20-year-old Snap-On charger that had finally given out.

Pros:

* Durability Not quite as solid as our old Snap-On charger, but acceptable in this day and age when every piece of metal and plastic seems to be thinner than a comparable part from the past. Seems to be built well enough for "fire house" use (and abuse) as well as use in a repair shop and/or home garage. Certainly well above the "made in China" or "Harbor Freight" quality level.

* Microprocessor control, etc. Relatively goof-proof settings mean less chance that people who think they know what they're doing (but don't) will damage batteries or vehicle electronics (or themselves) by setting the controls incorrectly or hooking up the cables backwards. Yellow (charging) and green (charged) indicator lights as well as amperage draw and voltage meters give a good indication of what's actually going on during the charge beyond "oh, the fan in the charger is running, so something must be happening." The timer makes a very subtle "tick" so you know it's not stuck.

* High amperage engine start assist capability Bigger is better when you're dealing with vehicles with two (or more) batteries, and 300 amps is close to the high end of what's available.

* Knobs are solid and easy to grasp I don't expect to need replacements any time soon, and people with big hands or wearing gloves shouldn't have any trouble manipulating them. There's a good, solid, substantial-sounding click when you change the knobs from one position to another.

* Battery desulfation capability, float mode charging capability, and alternator performance testing mode provide additional flexibility and utility.

* Amazon pricing for this unit was the best I could find anywhere on the web or in stores.

Cons:

* Cables are probably adequate, but they don't seem QUITE as hefty as those on our old Snap-On unit or those on some jumper cables I've used (yes, I'm aware that fatter cables aren't always better because sometimes the fat is from extra layers of plastic insulation being wrapped around the cable to give the illusion of heft/quality). The cables are apparently up to the task and do not get hot during the charging process. The clamps also have a stop on them so that they won't slide down a battery post.

* The control panel has the word "Ampers" on it (should be Amps or Amperes). How embarrassing.

Other:

* I used this unit to charge the batteries on a fire truck that has two mammoth batteries that had been discharged from sitting unused for several months, and the charger worked beautifully.

* Other reviewers mentioned packaging issues. The charger I received was packed in a cardboard retail box, which had been slid inside a plain brown packing box, and the brown box had then been placed inside a larger Amazon box that was filled with the usual crumpled paper and inflated plastic air-pillow packing. In other words, it was packed properly for UPS shipping. The unit was in excellent shape when it arrived with no damage whatsoever.

Bottom Line:

* All things considered, I am very pleased with this charger and have no regrets about purchasing it. I recommend it to others with needs similar to mine.

This unit was received in damaged condition. I read a previous review written about this item and completely agree with that reviewer that person's first unit was also damaged. The unit comes in its own cardboard box with no outer box and the handle is packed tightly against the cabinet of the unit with very little clearance to the cardboard box. Therefore, if it is banged against other packages during shipping, it is very likely to be damaged. Hard to believe the manufacturer doesn't know this or doesn't care, I guess. The unit looks like it will work OK, but the shipping packaging is very poor. Large dents on the sides and top of the unit. With Amazon's return policy, you cannot return this item and must dispose of it as "hazardous material". (Remember, this weighs about 40 pounds). I ended up talking with an Amazon customer service person and she was very helpful. They offered to order a replacement unit or fully refund my purchase price. I opted to try ordering again. She processed an order for another unit for me at no charge so I will see how that one looks/works when it arrives. Good luck if you order one of these! Follow up comment: Amazon sent a replacement unit to me within 5 days. It was triple-packed in cardboard boxes and arrived with no damage. Works great have had to use it to jump an older 5.0 L engine and with a dead battery twice and engine started right up this unit has plenty of power!

I bought this to charge my Zune in my car. I liked the small size and price, but it doesn't work. The fit in the cigarette lighter is extremely loose; the charger slips out whenever the USB cord is removed which sucks. I don't know why, but my Zune won't even charge off of it. It doesn't recognize that it's plugged in. The overall build of the thing is cheap (which is expected), so even if it worked it wouldn't last long. There are better options here on Amazon.

Don't bother with this, keep looking.

I haven't had this too long, but so far I LOVE it! Here's why:

1. I have an iPhone 4 in a nice thick protective case, and the arms on this mount are angled perfectly, and have a nice cushy foam on them, so they close gently but firmly on the sides. Holds the phone perfectly, which my last mount did not.

2. The mount also has a "foot" that my iPhone sits on, and one feature I didn't see mentioned before is that this foot has a wide hole in it, big enough for the charge cord to fit through! On one of my other mounts, I had to leave the phone pushed up high in the holder, and snake the cord up and around the foot. With this one, as long as I've put my phone in straight, I can just push the cord up through the hole and plug it in, without moving my phone at all.

3. I had a suction cup mount before, which seemed fine when the weather was warm. I live in NY, and this winter has been cold enough that every time I tried to use the mount, as soon as I touched it, the suction cup fell of my windshield. I couldn't rely on it. It also left suction cup rings on my windshield. This mount is sturdy and firm it's not going anywhere unless I take it off!

4. I love that it mounts to the radio the way it does. I don't need to play CDs since I have an iPhone, so I don't feel bad blocking the CD slot. The mount blocks the CD controls... but who cares? It is positioned perfectly (at least in my Chrysler Town & Country) right above the radio, where I can easily control my iPod functions, and also use my GPS functions. It turns sideways, tilts back and forth and up and down. Incredibly adaptable. My only concern is how long it will continue to stay tight if I turn it horizontally often (which I don't), so I will update this review if it ever gets loose. It doesn't feel like it will, though.

5. Great price! I've seen fancier, more "advanced" mounts for much more. Don't bother. This mount is perfect, and the price is more than reasonable.

I did lots of research, and almost bought several mounts dashboard-mounted, cup holder-mounted... thank goodness I found this one before I spent any money. If you have a radio with a CD slot, and your other controls won't be blocked by putting this in, get it. You'll love it!

I ordered a Casil Genuine CA1240 12V 4Ah battery for my alarm system. I received a PS5-12 Power Star 12V 5Ah battery. It was not the same as listed in the ordering site. It is being returned. I would not order again from this company. I sent Amazon a request to return and I am still waiting a reply.

I was surprised when I opened the box and found that the battery I received was not the battery I ordered. I contacted the vendor who assured me that it would be OK to use in the home security system I ordered it for. It is misleading to ship a battery that is totally different from the battery which was ordered.

The CA1240 was an exact replacement for my existing alarm backup battery. It arrived from JMAC Supply Corp. with free shipping on the fifth calendar day after I placed my order. Enclosed was a useful fact sheet including expected battery lifetime, an idiot-proof installion procedure, expected charging time until the "Low Battery" indicator on your alarm keypad will disappear, recycling instructions, phone, fax, e-mail and webpage contact info for the supplier, etc. Everything went perfectly.

I've had this solar panel for some time and it and the included 7 amp controller work great. It charges my RV battery much faster than the 15 watt single panel it replaced. I can run my stereo all day and the 30 watt solar panel keeps the battery fully charged. It's also very nice that it conveniently folds in half saving space when storing in the RV.

One note about the Amazon product video; the instructions that accompanied the controller clearly indicate that you should hook the controller to the battery FIRST before attaching the solar panel to the controller.

Instruction manual states;

"Always connect charge controller to battery first and remove last. Observe polarity positive to positive and negative to negative".

The aforementioned Amazon product video has you WRONGLY connecting the solar panel to the controller before hooking the controller to the battery. I know from personal experience that hooking it up in this order does something to the controller and both the amber and green LEDs come on simultaneously and there is no charging occuring.

A little disappointing. It comes with a tiny instruction sheet that contains no detail and is poorly written. A beginner, like me, will be very frustrated with this product. The stand is somewhat cheesy and fragile. If you go to the manufacturer's website, they have all sorts of ways to help you buy their product, but nothing in the way of product support and instruction except that you can print off the useless instruction sheet that you already have!

Whatever happened to owner's manuals? A good manual or a least something of value on the company website would have made a lot of difference in the way I feel about this purchase.

These are nice panels that fold like a suitcase and therefore protect the panels when moving them. I do not even use the brackets as they are a poor design. Just lean the panels against a wall or against a 3'x 3" piece of wood (to the center to keep the panels flat).They will charge a deep cycle battery in 3 days. Everything is included but batteries! I am amazed how much energy is available with a 30 watt system. Imagine a 200 watt system!!! I bought the Watts Up to keep track of voltage and it reads to the 100th of a volt without drawing current. I am amazed that more people are not into solar power. This unit provides well over 12 volts even when there is no direct sunlight. Free power if you buy the receiver :) The panels are black and not blue like Sunforce has them to appear which is very appealing in real life. This is a great hobby. You can get a Black & Decker 500 watt inverter ($40) and charge small batteries, computers, Kindles and all the sudden you are "going green" !!!

I've popped it off the windshield mount and have it attached to a portable Garmin mount that's easier to remove from the dash and hide when parked in the city.

I've tried both cases sold by Sprint. First the flexible clear ones, which I stopped using. I'm not using the two-piece case since it's easy to remove it to get the phone in the dock with the insert that holds it in position without the case. With the case on the phone, it just doesn't sit properly, no power to the phone, and the phone doesn't sense the dock (presumably with a low-powered magnet in the case and a sensor in the phone).

The insert can come out so the phone can fit WITH a case, but both Sprint provided cases don't work.

MOTOROLA, or any other purchaser, if you can let me know for sure of a case that will work where I don't need to remove the phone, please post it here!

I bought a stock car dock from my Droid a few years back and loved it. Since I got my Electrify I've sorely been missing one, but the price was too much. Finally waited until it dropped to $40 and snagged it (luckl too, price went back to ~$50 within a few days). Anyway, I expected a dock similar to my Droid (i.e. nothing special), but I have to say this little guy came with a few unexpected surprises/features:

For starters, the charging cord plugs directly into the dock; then you plug your phone into the dock. You can't see it in the photos, but the dock has a male USB plug just above the bulge along the bottom that sticks up into the phone. Just slide the phone down onto the USB plug, snap the top shut and away you go! "Docking" is a bit tricky, about half the time it slides right on and the other half I have to fiddle with it a bit. I found a static route for the cord, secured it down and I literally don't even notice it anymore. Not having to deal with a cord is amazing, worth the full price alone!

The USB cable that comes with it also has a female 3/8 audio plug on the charging end. It's in the picture, but unless you're looking for it, it's easily missed. I assume this means you can also permanently attach your audio to the car without a 2nd cord running from the headphone jack. I have to say I've honestly never tried it yet but probably should soon (my stereo has BT so I've still been using that). I didn't know it could output audio via the USB plug, but it comes with the 3/8" audio cord too. My charger plugs in just under the radio, so I really only needed about 6" of cable. The cord it came with is long, maybe 3', so it's more than I needed, but it's nice to have for other devices or use on my home stereo. They also left a hole in the dock over the headphone jack if you wanted to plug the cord in directly.

The last one wasn't really a surprise, I knew it came with, but I'm still happy every time I see it. They finally included a *DUAL* USB charging port! I usually give mine away and use a dual plug I bought a while back, but this one is actually quite nice with one plug angled up towards the phone. To be honest, I don't actually use it for charging the phone (my setup is just a bit different), but I do really like having a 2nd 2-port charger for the back seat.

I'd also just like to say the dock itself is a pretty good build. Quality looks good and it's pretty sturdy. I've been trying to think of something that I can put in contrast, but they actually just did a good job on this. 5-stars since I can't find a reason why I wouldn't buy this same one given the choice over.

One thing that did happen, when the dock arrived, they sent me the HD docking station instead. I was tempted to keep it since it's an $80 item and buy another car dock, but like I said, the price went back up to ~$50 and I had zero need for it. I contacted the seller who told me to use Amazon's return method. Free shipping back and I just ordered a 2nd that day. Amazon even comp'd me the $10 price difference.
