Honeywell HW7500E 9375 Watt 15 HP 420cc OHV Portable Gas Powered Home Generator With Electric Start

Honeywell HW7500E 9375 Watt 15 HP 420cc OHV Portable Gas Powered Home Generator With Electric StartAmazon has this generator for the lowest price on the internet and much better than locally (once factoring in free shipping which normally costs $170 and tax free which is generally $70 or 7% in Indiana).

Shipping is awesome although it was out of stock for a while. ABF shipping is great. Item arrived intact via smaller truck after 1 week. ABF called my cell phone and arrange for convenient delivery time (signature required). Driver called day of delivery for 30 min. warning that item is coming. Driver hand-trucked 278# generator which is in original Honeywell box without any crating down a 100 foot long driveway into my garage for my wife. This is not the norm as free shipping generally means curb-side drop off and it's up to me to dolly this baby into my garage. My wife gave the driver a nice tip and I called him personally to thank him.

I ended up cutting the box to get the generator out due to heavy weight. I used a dolly padded with a thick towel to lift generator on its side to put on the wheel kit and 2 back legs with enclosed nuts/bolts (no washer needed or included due to specially designed bolts and nuts with washer flare). The tires are solid rubber so nothing to inflate or to go flat (nicely design), and are held on the shaft via washers and cotter pins. The handles fold nicely and bolted on with same type of nuts/bolts. Nuts and bolts are metric so get out you metric wrenches or sockets.

Honeywell HW7500E generator is a beauty. Red, metal fuel tank holds 6.5 gallons with fuel gage and metal gas cap. Black accents and red engine are easy on the eyes. I used Stabil fuel stabilizer from Walmart (1 oz per 2.5 gallons) to allow storage of gas in the tank so it's ready to go with less gunk build up and easier start later. Generator shipped without oil. I did not use the enclosed free 1 liter of 10W30 oil or free tiny funnel, and used instead full synthetic 10W30 oil (5 liter jug) with long neck funnel from Walmart. I recommend pouring the oil into a clean disposable plastic cup and then using this cup to pour the oil into the funnel to reduce drips, waste, and mess. It took a full quart of oil.

I installed a Reliance 30216BRK manual transfer switch kit (bought on Epay for $_1_8_0 shipped--more at Lowes) and used the included 20 foot 14-30 cable from the 30216BRK kit to hook up the generator to the switch (generator is placed outside the garage of course to avoid carbon monox. posoining) when generator is needed. This switch and generator provide power to 50 gallon electric hot water heater (3000 watts), 2 fridges (1600 watts), 2 freezers (1600 watts), 6 ceiling spot lights, and 2 ceiling fans to family room. Obviously, the water heater will be switched on and off just for showers (once existing water in the tank cools) to reduce the load otherwise. The generator does have an idle control, stutters now and then when the water heater kicks on, and does not get any louder than a 20" push gas lawn mower. I can hear the generator barely in the house at night but not during the day. Generator is 10 feet from the house's brick wall, outside the garage door which is closed on top of the generator cable.

Starting is easy with plastic cheat sheet numbering 1 through 7 steps with electric start. 12v/14Ah sealed lead, tractor type battery started the generator with first push of the switch. This battery can be charged with a "smart" car battery charger if set to 2A mode for 6-8 hours. It can be replaced at Walmart or Lowes in the lawn tractor section. Stopping the generator is as easy as 1) unplug, 2) let run 3 more minutes, 3) push the button off, and 4) turn the fuel switch to off (also clearly stated, step by step, on the attached plastic poster).

Overall, this is an excellent generator for the price of $999.99 due to 1) 3 year warranty (1 year parts and labor, other 2 years parts only), 2) Honeywell brand (not the cheap Chinese junk like Powermax, Pro-Grade, Buffalo Tools, Blue Max, Chicago Tools, Eastern Tools, and numerous other aliases--best clue is the chincy 1 year warranty with them sending you the parts and you do the repair yourself or locally at any lawn mower/motor repair shop whose cost may or may not be covered by them), 3) 7500W continuous, 9375W peak watts (Chinese generators have exaggerated wattage ratings so beware), 4) included free accesories (25 foot L14-30 cable to 4 outlets which costs around $60-100 on Epay and even more locally), 1 quart of oil, cheapy funnel, 12v battery, step by step start/stop cheat sheet, toll-free help line with fast pickup by real Americans, and flat-free wheel kit.

I do wish that the fuel tank can be 10 gallons instead of 6.5 gallons, included funnel has a longer neck, easier access to fill oil, less noise is always a plus, included cable is standard 14-30 male to 14-30 female to allow easier hookup to transfer switches--it already has 4 outlets on the generator so why do we need 4 more on the generator cable?, outlet covers to keep them dry in the rain (I plugged them up with baby-proofing outlet covers at Walmart), and actual bumper to bumper 3 year warranty.

Despite these mentioned weaknesses, this generator is still a great buy at Amazon for this price.

UPDATED! I've now owned and used this generator for four years and one month. Please see my update immediately following the original review!

---Original review:

First off, let me say that I purchased this generator on Dec. 22, 2008, and it arrived on Jan. 6, 2009 (not bad, considering that when I purchased it, I was told it wouldn't even ship until the end of January 2009!). Plus, Amazon shipped it to my doorstep FOR FREE, a savings of $166.00.

Now, let's get down to the generator itself. It arrived in perfect condition, very well packaged inside its cardboard box. I carefully read the instruction manual FIRST, before doing anything else, just to familiarize myself with the generator, the accessories, and the assembly instructions. I then began installing the feet and the wheels, a process that took a couple hours, only because I was trying to be extra careful and to fully inspect the generator for any apparent damage as I went (hey, it is a $1,000 investment!). The only problem worth mentioning here is that only two wheel washers were included, but the manual says four. However, an extra set of washers would've made it impossible to install the cotter pins, so in the long run, it was OK.

Next I was ready to add the engine oil. As was previously suggested by another buyer of this generator, I added full-synthetic 10W30 oil instead of the oil that came with it (the sticker on the included oil, by the way, states that it is only for use above 32 degrees F, and it's colder than that right now here in Maine!) As everyone else has pointed out, the included funnel is worthless; however, I picked up a GREAT long-neck funnel at Wal-Mart for a mere 97 cents. Once I added the oil, I went to attach the battery. Here's where I had my second minor problem. The instruction manual said the negative battery lead would be attached to the alternator for shipping, but it wasn't attached to anything; it was carefully wrapped in plastic and left free-floating. Not a problem at all.

Speaking of the battery, while I was attaching it, I also attached the leads for an automatic battery charger/tender. Once I finished this step, I plugged the charger in, and was told that the battery was already fully charged! This was a real plus, as I didn't have to wait to test the electric-start feature of generator. I put in a couple gallons of stabilized gas, double-checked the oil level, turned on the fuel valve and the choke (the choke is on when the lever is to the LEFT -it's not clearly marked on the generator itself), and hit the start button. It started up IMMEDIATELY! I gradually moved the choke to the off position and gave the generator a few minutes to warm up. Then I pulled out my trusty multimeter to see what kind of juice I was getting. The 120V outlets were providing exactly 123V, and the 240V outlet was providing exactly 246V. Very stable readings, too! No major fluctuations at all!

Next it was time to plug the generator into my transfer switch. I did so, flipped the switch, and the next thing I knew, it was like NOTHING had happened. In other words, the voltage being fed into the house by the generator was so good, so stable, that everything in the house operated just like I was on utility power. I didn't try running everything at once, of course -it's only a 7500W generator, not a 15000W or more -but everything that I did run operated perfectly. My wife did a load of laundry in the front-loader washing machine, we turned on lots of lights, a space heater, the fridge, ran lots of hot water so the furnace would kick in to provide more, watched a DVD on our big-screen TV, surfed the Internet on our desktop PC, etc. We ran this full test of the generator for one hour! When we had multiple things running, I conducted another test with my multimeter. I'm happy to report that the house outlets were providing 122.5 to 122.9V, even with a decent load on the generator!

I can't think of a single bad thing to say about this item. The minor little issues I had are really nothing, when you get right down to it. What really matters is whether a generator will start reliably and provide good-quality electricity, and this baby DOES! If you want a generator to help you weather a shortor long-term power outage, I don't think you could go wrong buying this Honeywell. It's a real HONEY! And don't forget, it's got a three-year warranty, longer than every other generator I looked at. And you can't beat the price, considering the size of this machine!

--------

UPDATE: I've now owned this generator for four years and one month (It's now February 2013). I can't believe it's been that long! Anyway, this generator has been the steady workhorse that I hoped it would be! I keep a detailed usage log, so I can tell you with complete accuracy that I have used this generator during eight different power outages, ranging in length from one hour to eight hours, with several test runs throughout the four years, and this generator has never failed, never hesitated, never let me down! Even the original battery is still in perfect condition, most likely because I keep it on a trickle charger. The ONLY bad thing that I can say about the generator after all this time is that a couple quarter-sized areas of paint flaked off the cover where the manual pull rope comes out, but it still otherwise looks and acts as it did when I received it. I know Honeywell has updated this generator (new design, apparently a lot heavier, etc.), so this review may be outdated. However, if you are looking for a new generator and can't find my particular model any longer, you'd probably be safe trying the company's newest model.

Did a fair amount of research on brands but eventually was won over by the price point and a somewhat reputable brand name. The shipment was at exactly nine days after ordering, and the local delivery was within the time frame stated, although near the tail end of the window so no real reason to complain. The driver off-loaded the boxed unit with a dolly and placed it within my garage.

There it sat for a couple of weeks until bad weather was predicted, so I finally took it out of the box and began putting it together. That's when the little nitpicky stuff began to surface. Wheel kit was missing a set of washers, so the wheels won't roll very smoothly. Then went to install the handles and found that one handle did not have a hole drilled for the bolt. Ended up drilling it myself not a real big deal but a pain nonetheless. Tried to add oil with the funnel provided but it was worthless, so as others had previously suggested the next day I went out and bought a long-necked funnel (along with a male to female L14-30 cord to be able to connect the generator to my manual transfer switch. That night a storm came in and of course we lost power, so I was scrambling in the dark to fill the oil (with the new funnel) and then began adding fuel. Immediately there was a leak at the fuel shut-off switch. Ran it anyway (not very smart I know)and it started right away and powered up what we needed.

The next day attempted to fix the leak but it appears to be a problem with the gasket or O-ring within the valve housing. Tried to get a replacement part but was told I had to take it in to an authorized dealer for it to be ordered and fixed under warranty. They wouldn't send a replacement part, so now I have to load the 300lb unit into my car and travel 40mi one-way to drop it off so they can order the replacement part and wait 1 1.5 wks before I can again drive down to pick it up.

For the 2hrs I did use the generator it seemed to work ok, its just now that I'm concerned about the long-term and whether or not there are other issues that will surface. Especially since the distance to an authorized dealer is excessive. Check this out if you're considering purchasing, I didn't think of it.

Don't expect this generator to be there when you need it. It is cheaply made out of inferior materials. When I needed mine, I found the float valve in the carburetor was frozen closed due to rust from the steel fittings in the float bowl. The screws holding the solenoid on the bottom of the float are made of soft metal and the cross points stripped out on both of them so they had to be removed with vice grips. When I finally got the float valve unstuck, the rust cleaned out, and the generator running, I found there was only 43 volts out of each leg in the 240 volt socket. I have owned the generator just over 6 months, and have not used it since the initial test run and storage. Typical Honeywell Chinese made junk. Winter update: The starter motor doesn't have enough torque to start the engine in cold conditions. It won't pull it past the compression stroke even using synthetic 5W-30 motor oil. The recoil starter is usless as it is not humanly possible to pull it hard enough to start the engine. The only way I got it to start was to pull the engine past the compression stroke, and sometimes the starter motor will develop enough momentum to crank the engine. I wish there was a way to rate this product with negative stars!

I got the unit today unloaded it and put it together no problems. The unit just won't start. I called the number provided to ask if someone could walk me thru the initial start steps just to be sure I didn't miss anything. I waited several minutes and finally got a rep. I explained my problem and was told you have to take it to a dealer. I asked if there was anyone else I could speak to and was told they don't have any techs. She took my zip code and told me the closest dealer is 30 miles away. Now I am faced with getting this 200lb unit in the car drive 1/2 hour each way to drop off and by the way the dealer can't tell me how long it will be before it is repaired. BOTTOM LINE DON'T BUY A HONEYWELL

Cellular Innovations Car Charger for RAZR V3

Cellular Innovations Car Charger for RAZR V3bought the item really cheap, under $4 and it works perfectly on my moto Q.

Bryan

Deptford, NJ

This charger works great with my Sprint Mogul (HTC PPC6800) and a Holux M-1000 bluetooth GPS. At $1.99, I bought 3.

But, there is one problem the phone connector is a flimsy, snap together plastic shell; one of mine came apart in a few weeks. I tried the following trick on the other 2 to (hopefully) make them last longer:

Get some 1/2" heat shink tubing. I used Gardner Bender tubing from Home Depot (1 pkg $1.95 is enough to for 24 chargers)

Cut 1/2" off the tubing, slip over the body of the phone connector and heat with a lighter or match.

This should hold the 2 halves of the shell together and keep it from coming apart.

Buy Cellular Innovations Car Charger for RAZR V3 Now

This product appears to be well constructed and works great with the RAZR V3. I purchased a different adapter earlier this year and I could tell right away that the mini-USB connector was flimsy and would not last. After a few months it stopped working. This product is much higher quality and I think it will last a while. For the price, you cannot beat this adapter.

Not much to say. Just open the package and plug it in. Unlike 3rd party chargers, this one actually charges your battery properly (uses intervals), increasing the life of your phone's battery.

This device does what it is supposed to do, i.e. charge two rechargeable AA batteries. That's the "pros". The "cons" are: 1) it takes about an hour to complete its work. 2) The batteries are difficult to remove from the charger. The instructions say don't use a sharp object to remove them but I have to use a small screw driver to extract them. 3) There is no cord. The device itself plugs directly into the wall outlet. That's not terrible, but having a cord would be nice.

This charger will save a lot of batteries. The charger works great and the customer service provided by Garmin has been amazing. (I lost one of the plugs and Garmin sent me a new part for FREE.) I still carry a set of alkaline batteries just in case the rechargeable ones die.

The supplied rechargeable batteries will not charge. They actually never charged, even out of the box. I am not sure if it is the charger or the batteries. But I messed with it long enough that now it is outside of the return window. I just couldn't believe something from Garmin, and Amazon, would not work out of the box and I thought I was doing something wrong.

  • Nice Hot Pink Color.
  • Perfect for Carrying to Work or Traveling
  • Includes a 6ft Super Long (twice the length) Hot Pink Color USB Cable.

I was THRILLED with this charger when it arrived. The color is a great bright pink, and the long length is so convenient. It did not charge my phone (3G) as quickly as my Apple charger, but it still charged it at a decent rate. However, I am using past tense because it QUIT WORKING. After I owned it about a month (just over 30 days for the replacement period from Amazon), it just all of a sudden stopped charging. When I plug it into a phone, it does not respond. I've tried it with 3 phones (two 3Gs and one iPhone 4G) since it stopped working, and it will not come back. I kept it plugged in 24/7, and I just plugged my phone into it at night while I slept. I did not move it much to twist the wires or anything...one night it just simply didn't charge.

Wagan 2003-6 400W Continuous Power Inverter

Wagan 2003-6 400W Continuous Power InverterGreat, durable device that is sure to last. The only downside is the loud fan and bulkiness. Not too noticeable if cars a/c is running on high or if music is playing.

I purchased this unit to provide AC power for my computer and recharge my cell phones while on long cross-country trips. The unit has worked perfectly and provided reliable power for my equipment despite some rough highways and temperatures that ranged from the low teens to well over 100 degrees F. The unit has two USB ports whose power many cell phones will accept and two AC plugs for those that will not. I found that a 150 Watt inverter that I had picked up on special a few years ago was fine for one device, but would overload on two. The 400W inverter handles the 10W iPad charger or Dell laptop power block as well as two cell phones simultaneously. I stow the inverter under the passenger seat which also mitigates the noise from the fan, but you must periodically check the red and black nuts for the DC power terminal as they will loosen over time and bumpy roads. The unit has been reliable now over 16,000 miles and still going strong.

Buy Wagan 2003-6 400W Continuous Power Inverter Now

I bought this for a road trip across the country. Didn't really have much time to shop around. It's a solid piece and offers more than most of the power inverters in the price range (at least to my limited view). Well powered USB inputs. One thing to note however is that this inverter is LOUD. Not bad if you're traveling at 65 MPH down the highway with the music blasting and the windows down, but louder than you'd prefer for simple "parked" applications.

Good piece and I'm pleased with the performance, but if you need something quiet shop around.

Read Best Reviews of Wagan 2003-6 400W Continuous Power Inverter Here

So when I received this inverter I expected the fan to be a little loud, based on previous reviews, and it was. Not extremely loud, but I decided to fix the problem. A screwdriver opens the case and reveals a small 40 mm fan. Probably the cheapest fan you could find. I picked up a 40 mm computer case fan from Amazon for $7 and swapped them out. I took about 10 minutes. This new fan is only 14 dBA. You need to hold the inverter about 1 foot from your ear to hear it. So now I have the best of both worlds, a solid feeling 400w inverter with fan cooling that is whisper quite. Fan link below.

Want Wagan 2003-6 400W Continuous Power Inverter Discount?

This is my first power inverter I've purchased. I did however know what to expect from friends and family that have these. This inverter is one of the best built I've seen. The fan being a little loud is just the inverter keeping cool. A little fan noise should make you feel comfortable that this thing will not overheat. So far I've used it to recharge flashlights, 18 and 7.2 volt DeWalt batteries, and NiMH rechargeable AA and AAA's. It has done a fine job at everything I've put to it. It does not run hot, I'm sure cause of the awesome fan it has. And all the charges have been well within the normal charge time as opposed to me having the chargers plugged into the wall at the house. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone that needs the power while on the road.

Uniden SC200 Handheld Sport Scanner with 200 Channels

Uniden SC200 Handheld Sport Scanner with 200 ChannelsThis scanner is absolutely amazing. You can download a list of frequencies online for all the NASCAR drivers, then simply upload them to your scanner... it takes 10 seconds and saves you hours upon hours programming by hand. This scanner also has text so you can glance down at the scanner to see exactly who is talking at the races. It's awesome!!!

I've had a Uniden SC200 scanner for a couple of years now and absolutely love it. I'm a big auto racing fan and take it to the track whenever I attend a race. During practice I can listen in to the drivers talking to their pits and the alphanumeric display lets me easily see who is talking. I pick up the frequencies for free from various Web sites (e.g. Race By Race let's me use WinScan Sport to download them straight to the scanner). During the race, I tune into the TV production frequencies to hear the commentary and set up priority channels to break away whenever my favorite drivers' say something (Paul Tracy is always fun). I usually monitor race control too. It adds a whole new dimension to being there at the track.

Buy Uniden SC200 Handheld Sport Scanner with 200 Channels Now

I researched a lot of models before purchasing this one. You cannot go wrong with the Uniden/Bearcat name. I weighed the features against the price and this was the most economical in my mind.

I programmed the channels myself. Once I got into a rhythm, I finished all Cup drivers and a good portion of the Busch drivers in about 30 minutes. We have used at several races and we have so much more fun being in touch with so many different aspects of the race MRN/PRN, race control, drivers, etc.

The scanner is a nice compact size. I clip it onto my leg with an extra belt to prevent it from falling. A Y-cable is needed for more than one headset. I also have a 4 way intercom box (aircraft) and used the scanner with it. This will require additional cables as well.

Mediabridge High Output Dual USB Car Charger For Samsung S3, Galaxy Tab, Nexus (3.1 Amp)

Mediabridge High Output Dual USB Car Charger For Samsung S3, Galaxy Tab, NexusMediabridge makes two versions of this dual USB charger. This one is for devices that use the USB standard for charging devices: Samsung, Kindle, Motorola, LG, and so forth. The plastic case is grey, and the box is labeled "12 Volt USB Charger 3.1 Amp Shorted Grey". Note the words "shorted" and "grey".

The other version Mediabridge High Output Dual USB Car Charger For iPad and iPhone (Dual Port High Output Design: 1.0 Amp USB for iPhone; 2.1 Amp for iPad or additional iPhone) is for Apple products, and has a black plastic case.

Since 2007, the USB standard says an A/C adapter that can supply more than 500mA (1/2 Amp) should identify itself by connecting together ("shorting") the two data lines (the middle two of the connector's four wires). This charger does that. Apple expects a charger that can supply more than 500mA to identify itself by putting 2.0 volts on one data pin and 2.8 volts on the other (with respect to the ground pin). Obviously, if the two data pins are connected together (as required by the USB standard) they will have the same voltage; one can't be at 2.0 volts and the other 2.8 volts.

What this means is you can't make a charger that just works with products that comply with the USB standard and also with certain Apple products. Most of the dual chargers have one USB socket that works with Apple and one socket that works with standard products. That's great if you have both products. If you don't have any Apple products, then you're paying for a dual charger and only getting a single working socket with those products. With this one, both sockets work!

Some chargers are designed to work with Apple products but come with a special cable that shorts the data pins. With those chargers, regular USB cables will charge Apple products but the supplied cable won't (at least, not at high current). And regular USB cables won't charge standard products at high speed, only the supplied cable will. I think this is just asking for trouble. Not only do you have to keep track of which cable to use for charging, it also introduces a cable that looks like a USB cable but won't work WITH ANY PRODUCT for connecting to a computer for data (because the data lines aren't connected properly). Why would anyone want to have a cable like that floating around, just waiting to cause trouble?

So, bottom line: if you don't have Apple products to charge in your car, this is a great dual charger. If you only have Apple products, order the black version instead. And if you have a mix of standard and Apple products, look for the dual chargers that have one socket for each (but watch out... most of those have low current on the standard socket and high current only on the Apple socket).

One small problem: this product came with the manual for the Apple product (the black plastic model), which says it is compatible with iPad and isn't compatible with Samsung Galaxy or Motorola Xoom. That's wrong. Just ignore the manual.

When driving with the GPS and Bluetooth on, the power on my Samsung G3 would drop faster than the regular charger could replace it, especially if you make a few calls. On road trips, when my wife is driving and I'm playing games, it was even worse. With this charger I can put on 1% in about 8 min if I'm off the phone with GPS and Bluetooth is on if it's plugged into the 2.1 amp slot. We have two 12v sockets in our cars so I cannot speak to charging a low use device in the 1.0 amp slot at the same time.

I am also able to charge/use my 8.9" KindleHD 4G LTE in a similar fashion.

This review is focus on the light grey android version, not the black Apple version. While I have heard conflicting reports about whether they are interchangeable, my friend has a black apple version and it seemed to charge my Samsung phone and KF HD w/o a problem so it you are a member of a mixed race family (Android/Apple) you can probably share...just don't hold my feet to the fire on this, it worked w/o problems for my equipment (Apple working on Android devices) on 2 long trips. It was what convinced me to buy the android version. I would email rhe company if you have any questions.

You WILL get an email directly from MediaBridge after your purchase asking if you have problems and they will respond...how often does that happen these days.

The documentation in the package is wrong. It states that the charger is only useful for Apple products and not for Samsung, Asus, etc. This is incorrect. It is perfectly suitable for charging non-Apple devices, IOW, as advertised.

I checked the wiring and found the D+ and D(green and white wires) are appropriately shorted together. This is in compliance with the USB standard for high-current charger devices. (Apple uses a completely different wiring and voltage signaling scheme on D+ and D-, which preceded the USB standard now used by everyone else).

I then tested the actual output using a variable current load. The "1.0 AMP" socket produced about 1.4 amps before the voltage dropping to about 4.2V. The "2.1 AMP" socket went to about 1.9 amps before dropping to about 4.3V. Part of the voltage drop was due to the cables I was using, so the actual voltage at the socket was a bit higher. This is fine.

So, ignore the supplied documentation. The voltage and current capability is perfectly well suited for charging the big batteries in your USB devices. It essentially supplies the maximum current permitted by the Standard. The so called 2.1A rating is a nominal upper limit, and generally no device, for example my Nexus 10, pulls more than about 1.8 amps.

Now that we are a smartphone-using, ipod-playing, tablet-reading household, we often need to charge multiple items simultaneously in the car. We leave this plugged in with two cables (one for phone, one for 30-pin iPods) and never have to worry about whether we have the right stuff to make sure we can stay connected while we're mobile.

Cobra LI-7200-2 WX VP Micotalk GMRS/FRS 22-Channel 27-Mile Range 2-Way Radio with 10-Channel NOAA W

Cobra LI-7200-2 WX VP Micotalk GMRS/FRS 22-Channel 27-Mile Range 2-Way Radio with 10-Channel NOAA Weather Radio
  • Ultra-compact GMRS/FRS two-way radio with range of up to 27 miles
  • 22 channels (7 GMRS/FRS, 7 FRS, 8 GMRS) with 142 privacy codes
  • Full coverage of all government operated NOAA broadcasts
  • Value pack includes two radios, rechargeable batteries, and two-port desktop charger
  • One-year warranty

I had reasonable expectations for two-way radios like the consumer-grade Cobra Li7200 when I bought them. Based on my research, I knew that the whimsical claims on the bubble packs of 10's of miles of range (27 miles in the case of these radios) were pure fantasy. In urban areas, a mile or maybe two of range is the best you get; in more open areas, a little more. I also had a good idea of how the "privacy" codes work (they don't keep other people from hearing your broadcasts they allow you to tune out other people), the GMRS licensing requirements ($85/five years to the FCC to use the higher power GMRS frequencies, and the basic operation of two-way radios in general (they aren't cell phones you can't listen and talk at the same time, you have to pause after pressing the transmit key, the voice quality varies with transmitter power, distance, and intervening obstacles/terrain).

Based on my limited experience with these radios, I'm not disappointed. They worked fine on a recent vacation to a remote lake area. We used them to communicate between our rental house and the beach, while hiking on trails in the mountains [big kids and little kids move at different paces], between vehicles while caravanning to/from an off-road park, and to keep in touch while off-roading. While off-roading, one of the other vehicles had Motorola consumer-grade GMRS radios, and the Cobras and the Motorolas interoperated just fine, including both channel numbers (same channel number to frequency assignments) and CTCSS "privacy" codes. We probably never used them more than 1 to 2 miles apart, but we weren't going for any distance records.

The NOAA weather radio capability of the Cobra LI7200s was a key item for me. I wanted to be able to listen to NOAA weather service broadcasts because the area we were in was known for rapidly changing weather, and we needed to plan trips (hikes and beaching) without resorting to television news or non-existent Internet service. About the only weather radio features not found on these units is a weather radio "scan" (so I manually ploughed through the 10 weather frequencies until I found the local station, which wasn't hard because they broadcast continuously), and a "NOAA Weather Alert" (automatically monitors for NOAA WX ALERT signals) this last feature is appealing but wasn't available on the Cobras.

There seem to be two different approaches to batteries for consumer-grade GMRS radios; some take "AA" size batteries that can be rechargables or non-rechargables, others (such as the Cobra) use proprietary Lithium-Ion rechargables. If you know you can stick the radios in the charging cradle every day or two, the proprietary rechargables seem to be a good option they hold lots of power but are very lightweight. If you want the ability to go to non-rechargable backups when you are away from civilization, get a radio that takes them instead.

There appear to be three top-brand consumer-grade FRS/GMRS radios Motorola (actually made by a company called GIANT who license the Motorola name for this product), Midland, and Cobra. All three offer several models, mostly varying in size/output power (bigger size generally more power) and a few other features such as the NOAA weather radio capability. The Cobra LI7200s are the biggest/most powerful Cobras I found; I didn't find the size to be inconvenient nor the weight to be too much, and I wanted the maximum power I could get. If the Midland GXT900 had been shipping back in June 2008, I might very well have gotten those instead, as they have a higher rated power output registered with the FCC and they have the NOAA WX ALERT function, but I'm not unhappy with the Cobras. Some folks like the Motorola, others pan them. I wasn't sure I would like them because despite Motorola's excellent reputation with business radios the consumer-grade GMRS radios aren't really Motorolas.

For anyone thinking of using the Cobra with an external microphone/speaker, I will point out the the manual says "When using an external speaker/microphone accessory on channels 1-7 or 15-22, your microTALK radio will only operate on medium or low power." Since channels 8-14 are FRS channels that operate exclusively on low power, this means that these radios won't operate on high power with an external speaker/microphone accessory. This isn't a concern for me.

I didn't use the VOX (voice-activated transmit) or memory functions. I did use the channel scan functions to find clear channels (not a problem where we were located).

If you get a GMRS radio and you plan to use the GMRS frequencies, please go ahead and get properly licensed, then follow the radio rules about sharing channels. Have fun and save money on your cell phone bill!

For the price, excellent quality. I have gotten about a three mile range through dense forests and housing developments where other similar units couldn't handle it. Recommend.

I bought these specifically to use while skiing in Colorado. I was able to communicate with the other unit from everywhere across two peaks of the ski resort. When I went to a third peak (putting 1 peak between units) I couldn't commnicate with the other unit. 27 mile range it isn't. In the mountains over variable terrain and trees you're looking at more like a mile. However, it was perfectly acceptable performance or the ski resort application. I had no trouble communicating with someone at the base of the mountain when I was getting off of the highest ski lift. Easy to use & figure out. I'd recommend it.

I live in a very hilly area that doesn't lend itself to quality communication (even with cell phones). These radios are capable of 1 mile clear communication in a hilly terrain. I'm not sure of the range in open areas, but I'm sure it's much further.

They appear to be well made. One improvement would be to have a rubber ring surround the perimeter of the radio in case of a fall on a hard surface.

Radios charge and when almost fully charged, the leds get dim and eventually go out (when fully charged).

The li-on rechargeable battery easily comes out of its compartment without removing the belt clips.

Sound quality is excellent! I have a more expensive pair of Motorola radios with very poor quality audio.

The battery power is very strong and hardly needs charging after a whole weekend. The range is good.

Skiva Dual USB Port 3.1A 15w fastest PowerFlow Duo Heavy Duty Output Car Charger for iPhone 5 and o

Skiva Dual USB Port 3.1A 15w fastest PowerFlow Duo Heavy Duty Output Car Charger for iPhone 5 and other USB devicesI was slightly concerned at first because of the 3.1A rating I did not want to overload my phone. After receiving the product it says the output is 5.0V, up to 2100mA per port. This is exactly the same as iPad charger. The 3.1A is the total output if you have multiple devices plugged in. I've used this a couple times and it works great. Now my wife and I both can charge our iPhones in the car. Also anyone with an iPhone 5 can use this with the new lightning usb cable to charge their phone on the go.

The charger is well designed, has a matte black finish that has a slight rubber feel to it, not the cheap gloss plastic feel that most car chargers have. It's not bulky either and has a nice blue LED on the side when it has power.

I also like the generic design of the USB charger you can use this for any device, whether it be an android phone that has a micro USB input, an iPhone/iPod/iPad with a 30-pin connector, or the iPhone 5 and new iPods with the lightning connector. Just use your existing USB cable and you are ready to go.

I used this charger on two different iPhone 5s and received a "not-supported" message on my phones. Skiva did accept return of the charger for this reason.

Many chargers claim a 2A output, but that only holds true for ipads. This charger will actually output 2A for non-ipads/iphones. I use my Galaxy Nexus LTE to stream Pandora while using Google Navigation, and the charger is still able to charge about 7% per half hour. I am so happy with this purchase that I plan to get another one for my wife's car.

This is a great car charger. It has two USB ports which makes it easy to charge my iphone 5 and my wife's iphone 4 at the same time. I dont't know what the other reviewer is talking about with interference. I just tested it before I put this up and no such interference exists. It could be due to his specific car. All it all, it works just fine.

GTMax Retractable Rapid Micro USB Car Charger for AT&T HTC Aria

GTMax Retractable Rapid Micro USB Car Charger for AT&T HTC AriaI was hesitant to order this charger at such a cheap price, but I have had it for almost a year, and it works great when I am in the car. The retractable cord hasn't gotten tangled once, and it seems to charge my phone really quickly. I have since upgraded from the Aria to another phone with a Micro USB slot, and the charger works on that too. Pleasantly surprised!

Preliminary review: I ordered two of these chargers (they're so inexpensive and I knew they wouldn't last forever). I've used the first charger for two months. Yesterday my phone died and I noticed the charger wasn't working. OK, I can understand that. But I left the charger plugged in and periodically kept trying to see if it would work, hoping it was just a loose connection. Later in the day a smell of burning plastic was noticed coming from the charger. I unplugged the charger at that time. There's no obvious damage on the outside of the charger but I worry about a potential fire hazard. I'll use the second charger starting today and I hope the same problem doesn't happen again. It's one thing to stop working; another to start to burn...
