Battery Tender 021-1163 5W Solar Maintainer

Battery Tender 021-1163 5W Solar MaintainerCharges battery to full, then trickle charges to maintain. My 2005 GTO sits for weeks without being used. I hooked it up and it told me my battery voltage was to low. My battery was junk and needed to be replaced. This will happen to you if you don't start it weekly and let it run for a while,or hook it up to a trickle charger. I installed a new battery and charger keeps it at full charge. This is a very nice product. I don't have to worry about using an extention cord.

I bought this to use as a battery tender for our boat which doesn't get enough use. I built a mount out of ABS pipe so I could mount it above the boat lift. It works very well, it charges even when the sun is hidden behind clouds and I have not had any dead battery probems since. Having a visible indicator that it is working is a nice feature. It is a good quality product that doesn't seem to be bothered by the weather.

My only complaint is that they (the mfg) doesn't tell you which model to use for a given purpose. That would be helpful.

I purchased a Deltran Battery Tender JR 5 years ago as well as a motorcycle battery. Both the battery tender and the battery are still going strong 5 years later, this is not a typo! Yes, I said 5 years! Anyone who owns a motorcycle (especially a Harley) knows that you typically replace batteries every 2 years. Because of the performance of my battery tender Jr I decided to pick up this Deltran Solar Panel. I recently had to move my bike to a garage with no electricity and had to install the solar panel on the outside of the garage fully exposed to the elements. I've only had it about 2 months but I must say that this solar panel has performed above expectations. We have had some of the craziest weather on record in New Jersey. Warm days, cold days, heavy rains, 50 mph winds, 3 and 4 days at a time without sunlight. Yeah, Mother Nature has been sending us all kinds of craziness. So today I decided to go to my garage and see what kind of mess this solar panel was in. At the very least I expected to find the panel damaged by all the rain we've had. To my amazement it was working perfectly! It was 2 in the afternoon and cloudy due to all the rain and the solar panel LED was green indicating a fully charged battery. The panel has not been hit with any sunlight for 2 days yet it has been able to fully maintain my 5 year old battery. Another great product by Deltran.

UPDATE 3/28/2013: Here we are over a year after purchasing this Solar Panel and it continues to work great. It has been through some of the worst storms on record here in the East Coast without sustaining damage. My "very old" motorcycle battery continues to be maintained. The bike started easily even after 6 months of sitting in storage.

I bought this item to keep the battery on my car in shape. The car has sat since December and had a dead battery. The battery was fully charged in a day and I am very happy with how well it works. I would give it 5 stars but the cables are very short. I have a Mini Cooper with the battery in the trunk and the cable could not reach the front seat, if I had to connect in the engine bay I would be forced to buy the extension.

This unit was utilized outdoors to keep my collector car's battery charged. The car is temporarily stored outside under a heavy-duty car cover. I installed the Battery Tender 021-1163 5-Watt solar unit and placed it *outside* the vehicle on the car's windshield, then connected it to the battery.

I will say this: While it worked, it *did* keep the battery fully charged.

I had the unit for less than three months when I noticed the LED indicator had stopped working. When I inspected the unit, the small black plastic soldered connector (on the center of the back of the panel) had separated and fallen off. It was only held in place by some cheap glue and epoxy filler. When it fell off, that caused one of the delicate foil wires coming directly out of the solar panel to separate and break. The unit was no longer operational.

It's a cheap, poor design (manufactured in China). I paid $65 for this SINGLE unit, and it's NOT weatherproof at all. I inspected the instructions that came with it, and NOWHERE does it say that it's not weatherproof. One would assume the unit was weatherproof since it's designed for SOLAR power, but... you'd be wrong. It's not weatherproof. Apparently, it's made to be placed INSIDE the vehicle, on the car's dash... but for those of us who cover our cars outdoors, that doesn't work.

I disassembled and repaired the unit myself. It *DOES* work again, and now it's mounted inside my work truck out of the weather.

This is the second Battery Tender product that has failed on me. I have a Tender Jr. that stopped working for no apparent reason (and I couldn't fix that one, despite the fact that it never left my garage).

I will no longer be using or recommending their products.

I have since replaced this ONE unit with TWO Sunforce 5-watt panels (for the same $65 price). They are FULLY WEATHERPROOF and thus far, have not failed. I own a Sunforce 1-watt weatherproof unit that's been outdoors, hooked to my ATV battery. It has kept the battery charged and performs flawlessly since the day I received it, about a year ago. I suggest you try Sunforce brand chargers.

I'm giving it two stars only because it does still function and I was able to salvage it. But... no one should have to do that for a new product you've paid for. Epic battery charging failure here. Avoid this unit unless you want to mount it directly inside your vehicle, and I don't know anyone who's got the space in their car to mount something this size. My truck is a crew cab, so I have interior space for it. Most other's won't.

I know the Droid X is an old phone (by now), but when I had my phone plugged into the wall charger, the phone began exhibiting some ridiculously strange behavior such as: opening and closing random apps on its own, opening the messaging app (droid OS default) and typing messages to people in my contact list, creating calendar events with gibberish in the description, and so on. In short, it seemed like my phone was possessed! Never happened with any other charger or when the phone was not plugged in.

I could only attribute it to the wall charger...very weird. Other than that, everything else was great.

Everything was as described. The car charger and data cable work perfectly. Didn't really have much use for an additional wall charger or the screen wipe, but it was a nicely priced bundle. No complaints from me.

Husky Liners Custom Fit Heavy Duty Front Floor Mat (Black)

Husky Liners Custom Fit Heavy Duty Front Floor MatUsed the Amazon wizard to see if these would fit in my 2002 Mazada Protege LX and it said they would. Found out after they got here that they do not fit. What you see in the picture is what you get, nothing more or less. Returned these for a refund.

Far from being a great fit, these are really just stock mats that fit well enough you don't have to cut them.

Outstanding product quality, no so great fit for the VW Golf -some left foot rest/mat overlap.

OK for this set, but I will look for a better fit the next time.

272 Watts Solar Battery Charger Kit for 12V batteries. Flexible Solar Panels PV Laminate, Charge Co

272 Watts Solar Battery Charger Kit for 12V batteries. Flexible Solar Panels PV Laminate, Charge Controller & MC CablesI bought this solar panel kit before taking delivery of my RV and amazingly, they all fit on the roof of my 25' motorhome, but just barely. My nephews attempted to install this system for me -using limited knowledge of 12 volt electrical systems and no solar expertise. The panels are easy to install, getting the system to work is another matter. There are no real instructions included in this kit.

You will need to add a combiner box, fuses and cable to run from the combiner to the batteries. This was almost another $100 in parts for my RV. A battery monitor is a wise investment, also.

I ended up having to pay an RV solar company to complete the install and add a quality battery monitor. I now have a solar system that will get us thru cold nights (furnance fan runs off battery power) when the days are sunny or we drive over 200 miles. These panels do perform better in lower light and partially shaded conditions than the typical rigid panels.

Knowing what I now know, I would buy this system, again. Should I trade motor homes I don't think these can be moved. They are REALLY stuck tight to the roof.

BatteryMINDer Model 12117: 12 Volt 1.33 Amp (12V 1.33A) Charger/Maintainer/Desulfator

BatteryMINDer Model 12117: 12 Volt 1.33 Amp Charger/Maintainer/Desulfator...if you own deep cycle batteries. I bought one of these in 2001 as an experiment to desulphate eight 6 volt 225 amp hour deep cycle batteries.

********************************************************************************************************************

***EDIT May 9, 2013***

Contacted VDC Electronics yesterday to obtain information on the suitability of the 12117 for use with deep cycle batteries and learned that the model # for which the results in this review were obtained were actually for a Model# 12112, the predecessor to the 12117. The 12117 wasn't introduced until 2006. I had misread the model # on my unit when I wrote the review in 2009. I apologize for the error. That said, the 12112 and the 12117 are virtually the same technology with the 12117 having increase in output of about 30%. That would seem to speak fairly favorably of the results I obtained with the lesser powered unit.

VDC Electronics has confirmed that the 12117 "can be used with deep cycle batteries as a maintainer/desulfator", contrary to what the Amazon specifications might say. However, the 12117 is NOT certified for use with AVIATION batteries. The remainder of the original review continues below.

*********************************************************************************************************************

The RV park where we were staying used these deep cycle batteries in their golf carts. They were going toss them in the dumpster because they were having to recharge them too often. These batteries were in bad shape as evidenced by the constant 6 amps being drawn after being hooked up to their "super" charger for many hours. Essentially, these batteries were so sulphated that they would not accept any more charge. With many chargers the charge current will drop to "0" as battery resistance increases when fully charged.

I mentioned tossing the batteries in the dumpster might be illegal. If they let me have them to do some tests and possibly recover them, I would dispose of them properly if I had no luck. I had just installed a solar panel system with a 2500 watt inverter on my 5th wheel and had only 1 pair of golf cart batteries that was already at least 2 years old. I needed more reserve battery power and calculated that I would need at least 6 of these batteries for the inverter to be of any real use to me. When using batteries in this manner, it is best to use batteries that are in similar condition and ideally from the same lot. Six new batteries were going to cost about $520 with tax.

I got them back to my rig and baselined the charge they would accept on my 10 amp charger. Indeed, they were not accepting any more charge. I paired these old batteries in series to get four 12 volt configurations and spent the next 4 weeks (1 week per pair) on this desulphator. I continued this process until my charger's ammeter would go to zero when the batteries were full, an indication that they were now in good shape. Ultimately, 2 of the batteries would prove to be unrecoverable, but the other 4 plus the 2 I already owned eventually recovered about 90% of their original amp hour capacity based on some standard tests I ran.

My inverter, combined with these recovered batteries, would run my 15,000 BTU air conditioner for nearly an hour, more than enough time to cool our 5th wheel while preparing and consuming lunch in 106 temps in Ca. deserts. The batteries would be nearly fully recharged by the solar panels and charge line from the tow vehicle by the time we reached our destination for the evening. With loving maintenance and care, they had lasted another 5 years providing countless hours of dry camping service! Finally, in 2006, I replaced them with new ones before an extended camping trip.

This charger/desulphator requires 115 vac and a minimum of 11 volts in the battery before you connect to it. So, if your battery is dead, be sure to bring it up the 11 volt minimum before hooking the unit up or it could overheat and be ruined. Also, most of the cheaper old style battery chargers don't have any voltage regulation. Consequently, the voltage these chargers supply to a fully charged battery can exceed well over 14 volts and will eventually "cook" the electrolyte out if you leave them hooked up. They can also overheat the battery, permanently damaging the thinner plate structure of automotive (starting batteries). The VDC model I bought in 2001 can be left on to maintain the charge in lead acid batteries. Check your operator instructions to be sure.

Shortly after recovering these batteries, I bought another desulphator from an Arizona solar supplier capable of desulphating a 1600 a/h battery bank that operates only off of the battery bank. This constant desulphating process along with proper battery maintenance is probably what helped sustain these batteries for an additonal 5 years. In the absence of a desulphator, deep cycle batteries should be "equalized". The interval depends on usage. I was doing it monthly. The equalization process requires a special charger and can be hard on batteries. Desulphation performs a similar function without the harshness of equalization. Desulphation plus judicial use of equalization can extract maximum life out of your deep cycle batteries. I wouldn't be without either one of these desulphators or a 3 or 4 stage battery charger.

A final note: Never let your batteries sit in a discharged condition. As a battery discharges, the sulphate that forms will be easier to return to solution whn prmptly recharged. If you let it sit, the sulphate can harden and be nearly impossible to return to solution.

Excellent Product; does what it's advertised to do. Comes with lugs/rings and alligator(battery) clamps and a long cord. Works like a cell phone charger, just connect it & plug it in. WILL NOT WORK ON A COMPLETELY DEAD BATTERY!! (If the battery is dead, use your bulk charger to boost it for a couple of hours and then connect the maintainer.) Once the maintainer reaches full charge, it goes into conditioner mode (green flashing light)which is desulphating the battery, exentending its life. Worth the $$$.

This is something that any guy with a garage and a car should have...especially if you have more than one car. I was more than impressed with this little desulphator/charger's ability to revive a battery that would have otherwise been junked. I have an e34M5 that is notorious for slowly killing batteries. After the battery was dead for over a month, I charged with my "big" battery charger as this cannot help batteries that are on the brink of death without being charged with a larger charger, then I put this on it for two weeks and it was nothing short of a miracle.

If you have a car that sits for long periods, you should get one of these little fellas.

I purchased the Battery Minder Plus to restore my boat battery. I am an electronics engineer and had researched what happens to a lead acid battery that causes it to loose its capacity. Though there are other causes, the most common one is sulphation, a coating that forms on the lead plates that is non-conductive reducing their ability to conduct electricity. My battery was so bad that even after many hours of charging on my charger's highest setting, it couldn't hold enough charge to operate the radio, much less engage the starter. I ordered the Battery Minder Plus (at roughly half the price of a new battery). It arrived this past Monday evening. Five days ago. Before I could begin charging, I had to force the Battery Minder into "Maintenance Mode" to start de-sulphating it. Basically zapping the battery with pulses of power that forces the sulphate to disolve. Eventually the battery began to take and hold a charge. This morning I was able to easily start the boat with only the battery. I'm very impressed. Very happy with the product. The manual that comes with it is a bit disorganized and quite redundant but most of the information you need is in there.

I had a battery that the local parts store said was bad on their conductance tester, so I hooked it up to this little wonder.

First it started in charge mode then I checked an hour later and it was in desulfation mode. I took it back to the parts store

the next day (about 12 hours later) and he said he didn't understand it but now it was testing GOOD.

Needless to say I bought a second and am seriously thinking about a third and fourth one since I have a farm with lots of different batteries.

Well, now I have a THIRD one.. They are amazing !!!!!!

Power Bright VC100W Voltage Transformer 100 Watt Step Up/Down 110 Volt - 220 Volt

Power Bright VC100W Voltage Transformer 100 Watt Step Up/Down 110 Volt - 220 VoltI am currently in the Army deployed to Afghanistan and here it is a 210v outlets. So in order to plug in my Xbox I needed a transformer that would work well in the dusty enviornment of Afghanistan. This is a great product and works well with both 110v and 210v-240v (there are settings for all voltages).

PROS

-Works great with Xbox360, PS3, and other American appliances.

-Comes with extra fuses in case you burn them out.

-There is a power switch on it so you can plug in first to double check and make sure it is in the right port (even if it isnt it will just burn out the fuse rather than blow your appliance)

-It is slotted for all different types of plus ie. european plug which are 2 prongs and iraq plugs which is 2 flat with 1 veritical plug

CONS

There is a burning smell when I use it past an hour I feel like its probably because of dust stuck inside or what not but maybe you will not have the same problem.

CONCLUSION

If you are currently serving overseas ie. Germany,Iraq,Afghanistan,Italy this is a great product to buy when you want to play your xbox360 or ps3 since they are 110v.

Just be sure to read carefully and always use proper safety procedures when operating any electronics.

I purchased this to use certain small electrical devices that I brought from the UK to use in Barbados. It works exactly as I hoped/expected it to work. Very simple to use and small enough to take with me if I need to use 110v devices in 220v countries or vice versa.

This is an excellent machine, and at such a cheap price!

I'd originally intended to buy a simple small power converter from Radioshack, but they were 39 bucks for a crappy thing that only has 40W output and looked very flimsy. I knew there had to be a better option online, so I came to take a look here, and lo-and-behold, I found this gem of a little power converter.

The size isn't too bulky or space-taking (it sits nicely in a corner without disturbing anyone), the cord is long enough that I can have it on top of the cabinet next to my sound system, or in a shelf beneath it depending on my mood, and its power output is 100W! Far more than what I needed for my sound system, so I can use it for other things also without having to buy a more powerful machine.

It's really a great machine, and accepts both 110 volts and 220 volts without problems. For the output, you just plug your device into either of the two exit outlets it has, depending whether you need 110 or 220.

It accepts a wide variety of plugs and I was pleasantly surprised to see it comes with spare fuses and an extra plug-converter in case you need to plug it into a foreign outlet.

I also like that it has an on/off switch so that I don't have to keep unplugging it whenever it's not in use. Other converters I've had before would keep pumping power and over-heating if you didn't unplug them, while this unit has none of those problems, and works like a charm!

I'm very happy with it and will probably get a few more so that I can have some here and some for when I travel and so on.

Want Power Bright VC100W Voltage Transformer 100 Watt Step Up/Down 110 Volt - 220 Volt Discount?

The European version of a device had a feature I wanted, so I tracked down a source and in the excitement of finding it, I overlooked the fact that devices made for the U.K. need 220V. So I bought this adapter.

I've been using it continuously for about a week and it works fine.

It did smell of solvent when I removed it from the packaging, but that quickly dissipated. I followed the instructions, plugged everything in, turned on the switch and it's been working great ever since.

The device my adapter is supplying only draws 9 watts.

I imagine that several of the folks who have written of problems are using devices which draw considerably more than the 100 watts that this adapter is designed to convert. If you're going to connect devices which need more than 100 watts, get one of the higher rated adapters. There's a 200 watt version of this same box for $5 more. And the 500 watt version is about $31.

Amazon also sells the Goldsource brand, which looks very similar in the pictures. I don't know anything about Goldsource, but I think it's worth mentioning that their adapters have a USB power supply plug built in and cost a couple dollars more for the same capacity adapter. I didn't need a USB charger source, so I bought the Power Bright which was $2 less expensive.

This thing is not a compact traveling companion. Its sturdy shielded box is made for sitting in one place and the thing has a hefty weight, suggesting burly components on the inside -unless there's just a lead weight in there.

Heavy may not be great for traveling, but it usually means that the components will last a long time under continuous use, which is how I'm using mine.

UPDATED REVIEW: My earlier review only gave this unit 4/5 stars because it wouldn't download the address book from my iPhone 3G. Please read on and see how this issue was resolved.

I got this unit yesterday at Mickey Shorr (Canton, MI). They installed it in my 2006 Eddie Bauer Ford Explorer in about an hour and I was off and running. The iPod integration is top notch. Using the touchscreen controls I instantaneously scroll back and forth between songs. So for the guy who installed this unit in his F-150, I'm not sure why you're experiencing the latency issue of 10-15 seconds to scroll to the next song, or go back one track. I feel bad for him because I'm thrilled with the speed and ease of use. The GPS is from Garmin who I believe to be the best. GPS in the unit is very accurate and could NOT be easier to use. Overall, with 15-20 minutes of fooling around I was able to master all the controls of the DNX6960 and same with my wife (since it's in her car).

I formerly had an issue with the unit in which it couldn't download the address book from my iPhone 3G (software version 4.1). The phone paired with the unit instantly (AWESOME!) but would not download my address book. The letters "DL" would show up at the top of the telephone screen for 3-4 seconds and disappear. This told me the address was being downloaded, but the address book touch screen icon was still greyed out. Low and behold, by mistake I found where the installer hid the bypass switch and it was set to "ON." So I figured this meant the unit was in bypass mode, meaning the parking break IS BYPASSED from having to be engaged to watch videos and download the address book. Apparently not because when I flipped it to the "OFF" position just for the hell of it, the address book touch screen icon became active. I said if I was able to figure this out I would let everyone know and rate the unit 5 stars. So here we are. I figured it out and I have no reluctance giving the Kenwood DNX6960 5/5 stars. I hope this helped someone out who was experiencing the same issue.

I was looking at the DNX9960 and this unit to replace the Pioneer F90BT that started to give trouble. I ended up going with this unit because it was much more affordable, the features I were interested in were more or less the same, and the form and screen size were very similar to the F90BT. It is not as modifiable as the pioneer but performance-wise it surpasses the F90BT by far. The interface is easy to learn, however setting the configuration for the optimum sound took a little work. The garmin navigation is my preference I am familiar with the interface and maps are easily available for any area (I am not using this unit in the US). The pre-outs are 5volt as compared to the 3volts on the pioneer. I am using this with an infinity 5350A multichannel amplifier and infinity components with a pioneer low-profile subwoofer, and the sound I am getting now as compared to the pioneer seems to be packing a little more juice. All in all, I am very satisfied with this head unit and would recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade. GO GET ONE.

After installing this head unit in my 2008 Ford F150 I got very excited. This really is a classy head unit in most respects. I've got my phone paired with the Bluetooth, the navigation seems very nice, Sirius radio sounds very good, even my steering wheel controls seem to work decently with the PAC SWIJACK, but... I used the Kennwood KCA-IP301V adapter to control my 120 GB iPod Classic. Immediately I noticed that it takes anywhere from 5 to 10 seconds (more often closer to 10) to switch forward or backward between songs, or to choose the songs from the list menu. Basically whenever you switch songs the unit freezes for the 10 seconds or whatever, and then resumes. Album artwork loads just as slowly too, which I really wouldn't mind being quicker, but would sacrifice in a heartbeat if it meant I could navigate between songs quicker. Also, when trying to navigate through my music using the A-Z menu, only about half of the letters actually brings up music that starts with that letter (M gets you O, P gets you R, but L might actually get you L, etc.) In essence, it's nearly impossible to listen to your music without going crazy. It can literally take you up to a full minute to try and skip ahead 6 songs!!! Try to press track advance twice (which you WILL unconsciously do when the unit doesn't respond after the first press} and then it freezes up for the 10 seconds, then skips ahead twice which is fine if that's what you want, but often I only wanted one song skipped, so you have to press the back button, which starts the 10 second clock all over again! I called Kenwood tech support and was told that this particular new line of head units (2010 I assume) does indeed process iPod functions slower that past year's models. I was not able to confirm that a software fix might be coming later on, only that the current slow operation is "normal" for this particular lineup. Maybe a software update is coming, maybe not. Who knows?

In closing, if you intend to use your iPod like I do (my CDs never even leave the house any more), then this head unit isn't even worth the trivial price you'd pay to have it shipped to you. If you don't use iPod, then I can't imagine you being unhappy with it.

I would give this product less than one star, but I think if you leave the iPod issues out of the picture, it's a GREAT player. But if you're like me and your entire music collection is on your iPod, AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Shame on you, Kenwood.

UPDATE I purchased a brand new 64GB iPod Touch and it had the same issues with this head unit as my older iPod Classic. I have returned the unit. An awful first experience owing a Kenwood product.

Want Kenwood Excelon DNX6960 6.1" In-Dash Double-DIN Navigation DVD Receiver Discount?

I placed an order through Amazon.com with Car Toys for the DNX6960 on 14 February 2011. Wanted to buy from Car Toys as Kenwood's web site lists them as an authorized internet retailer, this ensures that I will be able to receive Kenwood's Direct Warranty Service. Car Toys shipped the unit quickly and it arrived in excellent condition.

I easily installed the unit on 03/10/2011 in addition to these Kenwood Accessories; KTC-HR300 HD Radio Tuner and a Kenwood KCA-iP302 iPhone/iPod Hi-Speed Audio and Video Cable (latest model). The accessories connected easily and interfaced flawlessly with the unit. The most difficult part of the install was finding a concealed location in my Harley Truck to mount the HD Tuner Box, its 6 ½" x 1 3/8" x 4 5/16" size proved a bit challenging. The Navi's GPS Antenna was mounted under the plastic wiper cowl, and to my surprise the unit immediately began acquiring satellites inside my garage after the ignition was keyed on. I've just begun to adjust the audio and radio settings, will move on to customizing the display and then setting up the Navi and Bluetooth Systems. A 4th Gen iPod Touch will be added in a couple of weeks.

Bottom Line: Although I've had very little actual hands-on time using the actual features and functions of the DNX6960. I'm VERY optimistic that I will enjoy this unit very much once I've completed the setup of its Navi and Bluetooth Systems, and finally installed an ipod Touch for MP3/video play. The unit is basically plug and play if you use the correct harness adapter to connect it to your stock wiring harness. Just make sure you plan ahead for a good location if you're adding any sizeable additional accessory.

UPDATE: (03/14/11) The Hands-Free setup for the Bluetooth connection with my Motorola Cell Phone was a breeze, and my phones address book was automatically transfered to the DNX6960. After listening to how well the DNX6960 played HD Radio and CD's, I quickly decided that I would not wait two weeks to get a MP3 player, I purchased a 32GB iPod Touch 4th Gen the weekend following the units install. WOW! I'm very impressed with the way it interfaces with the Kenwood. The sound is VERY good and using the playlists I setup on the iPod Touch makes selecting and listing to artists and tracks a breeze, that also makes it much safer to do while driving too. Boot up time is a tad slow, but I have remote start, so the unit can be fully operational and playing by the time I reach the vehicle. I recommend to anyone planning to connect an iPod or iPhone to this or any Kenwood HU, make sure that you buy an actual Kenwood iPod/iPhone Audio and Video Adapter Cable. It's possible that some who get lousy iPod/iPhone performance, do so because they are actually using a Kenwood Compatible Cable, not a Kenwood Sourced Cable. For me, the addition of the iPod Touch ups the audio ante and makes listening to the DNX6960 an even more enjoyable audio treat!

Wanted my Bluetooth Microphone in an unobtrusive location, so I slid its little stand behind the top of the A-Pillar Cover and the cable is routed behind the pillar cover down and out behind the driver's side kick panel, then underneath the dash to the unit. The microphone is barely visible, even from inside the vehicle. It has just enough cable exposed to allow it to be swiveled forward or rearward depending on the drivers height. So with my GPS Antenna concealed and the Bluetooth Microphone almost invisible, I feel I'm a less conspicuous target to thieves.

Kenwood Excelon DNX6960 6.1" In-Dash Double-DIN Navigation DVD Receiver

I purchased the DNX 6960 unit and had it professionally installed in my Lincoln MKZ. I also purchased the iPod cable and pac swijack...off subject, but both of THOSE items were excellent.

Back to the DNX 6960:

I decided that this was a great "inexpensive" Excelon unit. Kenwood is a phenomenal brand and Excelon is their flagship model. Unfortunaeltly, after having the system installed for a week, I put my first cd in the unit. It proceeded to play, and it sounded extraordinary (after tweaking the sound previously). It wasnt until I decided to eject the CD that I had an issue...."MECHA ERROR". It just sits there and all you hear is a bunch of internal movement. The CD is stuck and now it won't play anything the CD anymore! :P

Although that is a definite turn off...especially because the same slot for the cd player also hosts the dvd player, I can still use the other features.

I was thoroughly pleased with the GPS of this unit Dead on accurate! Screen is beautiful! Touch is responsive! Sound is amazing! Phone feature awesome! EVERYTHING but the CD/DVD player issue has kept me extremely pleased. I am giving this review a 4 out of 5 because I really don't listen to CD's all too often since I have my ipod, and you can't watch a DVD and drive. It deserves a good rating on absolutely EVERYTHING else! I know not very many people will have an issue like mine. If you are looking for a great all around unit, this is the one. I just wish you all better luck than I had.

Update: 5 star rating!

Eject button is now working every time that it is pressed. CD's/DVD's play and eject with absolutely no issue. I live in MI, and we had a some pretty cold weather (possibly too cold for the unit to function properly...?) It works fine now. No complaints still! The DVD playback looks crystal clear. This is a great unit.

USA Gear Hard Shell Carrying Case for 5-inch and 4.3-inch Garmin nuvi , Magellan Roadmate , TomTom

USA Gear Hard Shell Carrying Case for 5-inch and 4.3-inch Garmin nuvi , Magellan Roadmate , TomTom GO & More Portable GPS Navigation UnitsThis case is semi-hard with a nice soft lining against the screen. It is the perfect fit for the TomTom One 3rd Edition.

I originally ordered this for my Garmin GPS but with the cloth bag I can fit both my GPS and my XM satellite radio and they wont touch each other in the case. I love the little net for accessories. Very functional and good quality.

Buy USA Gear Hard Shell Carrying Case for 5-inch and 4.3-inch Garmin nuvi , Magellan Roadmate , TomTom Now

I ordered this product with my Garmin nüvi 1370/1370T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth GPS Navigator with traffic alert and I highly recommend the Hard shell carrying case.

Some of the things that I like about the case are as follows:

-There's a pocket for your GPS within the case which protects your GPS from scratches from your cable.

-The general space in the case is perfect for the Traffic alert Cable from Garmin; just enough space so you don't have to crunch up the cable but not too much that you feel that the case is uselessly big.

-The detail of attention paid to the design of the case: There is a strap which keeps your case from unintentionally flying open after you undo the zipper and think you're part of a circus and see no risk in juggling your keys, cable, cell phone, gps etc etc as you try to put the GPS in the case (or take it out.) There is also a small velcro strap to keep your GPS in the previously mentioned pocket.

I saw the model numbers and assumed this case would be the exact size for my new Garmin 3790T. In fact, this as the new model is, I could fit at least 4 of them inside the case. Not only too large, the internal pouch for accessories is difficult to close with the short velcro tab that locks inside the pouch. Also, lateral elastic tapes make the case almost impossible to open wide. This is a general purpose case not specific for the listed GPS models. Try something else.

Garmin Zumo 550 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Discontinued by Manufacturer)

Garmin Zumo 550 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
  • 3.5-Inch Screen
  • High-Sensitivity GPS Receiver
  • 10,000 Point Tracking
  • Bluetooth-Enabled For Hands Free Calling & For Sending Audio To Compatible Helmets
  • High Bright Display For Sunlight Readability & Uv Resistant

People complain about the Zumo not having a built in speaker. Well, you wouldn't be able to hear it while riding your bike it if it had one, so it's a bit of a moot point.

On a side note, I think there are some features the unit lacks that can be somewhat annoying. First, and definitely the most annoying for me, the elevation by which you view your position on a GPS determines the amount of detail you see, i.e. POI's, street names, distance of road to travel, etc. The units I have used previously (factory nav in a Honda, other Garmins and the Mio 310 to name a few) had the ability to select zoom/elevation from the main nav screen allowing you to choose your "view" of the road so to speak, at anytime. With the Zumo, you cannot change elevation/zoom from the main nav screen, you can only adjust it while in map mode searching for a destination. The second you go back to the main navigation screen you loose the elevation you chose and go back to a default level of zoom, which for me is real irritating.

Another annoying feature is the keyboard for text input does not offer a QWERTY layout. I have not had to type on an ABCDEF style keyboard since the invention on the PC. In fact, I have a Garmin IQue 3600 that's 4 years old and it has a QWERTY keyboard?

Also, the search function on the Zumo is relatively slow at times. I once waited 4+ minutes while searching for a popular restaurant. It found it eventually, but for a while I thought the unit just froze up. I happen to be sitting in my driveway so it was only a minor annoyance, but if you were parked on the roadside with cars buzzing by it would seem more like an eternity.

One other issue, the built in hard drive is pretty much full with maps right out of the box, which isn't that big of a deal with the open SD slot. The SD slot lets you slip in a SD card for expanded memory capability (MP3 storage etc.), but when loading routes from your PC (which is a great feature I'll touch on below) you must save the data directly to the units hard drive in order for the Zumo to be able to read it. Well, that's going to be an issue when the hard drive fills up from firmware updates, etc.

While I'm at it, I think the icon that marks your position on the map is annoyingly large. It makes your car or bike look the size of a lake, or some other large map detail.

On the plus side, I believe that all of the issues I mentioned are correctable via a firmware update and a few bugs are to be expected to some extent given this is the 1st generation of a new model. Although, you can also argue that with the price this thing sells for combined with the experience Garmin has building GPS devices there is really no excuse for the Zumo lacking anything.

A nice feature, which is common on Garmins top units, is that you can map out routes on your PC, load it to the Zumo (again, on the built in hard drive though not the SD card) and away you go. This comes in handy if you're in sales for example and need to hit a few clients on a particular day or if you're going to be cruising on your bike and have a bunch of places you want to stop at during the trip. Rather than having to wait and program destinations one at a time as you make your stops, you can knock them all out the night before on your PC so you're entire trip is planned before it's even begun.

Also, the Bluetooth feature is sweet and works flawlessly. Pairing the Zumo with my Blackberry was a breeze. The Zumo was able to read my address book and displayed the contacts on the phone screen so there was never a need to touch the Blackberry once paired. When in the car, the speaker worked well and people on the other end seemed to have no trouble hearing me. I disagree with the one reviewer that said the mount looked weak. I think the mount would successfully support a cinderblock on rough road.

Installing the Zumo on my ZZR1200 took me about 30 min. It takes some time to run the wires and connect to the battery. You will need to crimp connectors (that are not supplied) on the end of the wires that go to the battery. The Ram mount is real solid. The Zumo does not move once you're locked in and on the road.

Now for the justification of the 4 star rating given I beat the Zumo up quite a bit. The build quality of this thing it second to none. It is literally built like a tank. I'd bet it would outlast anyone who buys it. Again, firmware updates will likely take care of all its shortcomings over time. And last but not least, Garmin tech support is second to none. No matter who you speak to they are knowledgeable, professional and will provide answers to anything you can throw at them (and I come up with some good ones) all without making you feel like you're annoying or a technological moron.

Therefore, I don't think you can go wrong with any Garmin, if you can swallow the price of the unit.

I just wanted to comment on the Zumo 550 with current software. I purchased this unit about 3 weeks ago and before I got it I was a little disheartened by some people's reviews on some lacking features. However when i got the unit and upgraded to the latest software (that was available as of 4/15/2007) many negative comments seem to have been addressed (if I'm understanding the commented issues correctly). First the views of the unit seem very flexable and I don't see the limitations. You can select between 2-D top down views for the people who are used to that view or 3-D. The unit has multiple levels of zoom/un-zoom from the big buttons on the outside as well as on the touch screen... I'm just not seeing any limitations. You can also taylor how much detail you want to see on the screen ( more or less). The only thing I do agree with is the Icon's used to show your position (you can choose between about 6 or so) are kind of large. Would have been nice to have the choice to alter that but I chose the 'wedge' and it works nicely with the screen size. Second, definitely a software upgrade was the addition of two different compus views.. .one small indication on the main map screen and a full 360 degree compus graphic with ELEVATION on a separate screen (selectable from the big rubber buttons or through the menu). The unit is unbelievable compared to earlier units I've had .. I can litterally stand in my family room under cover and turnaround and move 1 step (sometimes 2 is needed) and the unit will reflect the change in direction! I use this with a common motorola razr phone and a Scala Rider helmet bluetooth unit (on a shoei rf-1000 helmet) and everything works perfectly. Also, as far as weatherproofing the manual indicates it can be kept under 1 meter of water for 30 minutes! Great mounting hardware and super easy to use.. definitely a fantastic unit with the latest software upgrades. Thanks.

The 550 works very well. Specs say it works between 32 & 140 degrees. I ride all winter so far it works at 15 degrees F. Surprisingly easy to use with heavy winter riding gloves. The motorcycle mount is much cleaner than I expected. Very flexible, allowing the unit to tuck in close and not look dorky. The car mount is clean with an acceptable albeit not great speaker. It's VERY easy to move between vehicles. I was somewhat disappointed at first about the lack of a built in speaker, but if I need to walk around with it, it's no big deal to use your cell phone Bluetooth with it. Maybe that's the price you pay for a truely waterproof unit. While riding, you can hear the alert tone using a cell phone Bluetooth, but cannot understand the audio. I plugged in iPod ear buds into the bike mount and it sounds great without being obvious about being "plugged in" (I ride a half helmet). If you use a full face with built in speakers you will be very happy with the audio.

Others complained about the lack of things like a real compass and satellite acquisition display and built in speaker. I have addressed the speaker issue. The compass displays eight points (like the one in the rear view mirror of your GM car). That's all I really need. Showing the satellites it has acquired is neat but what do I really care the thing is very sensitive. I get 5 of 5 bars IN my house. The MP3 player does work well although it does not have play lists. You can at least sort by album, artist and genre. To listen to decent quality audio, you will need ear buds. Displaying pictures looks good but the response is a little sluggish.

Storing up to 50 routes is great and being able to download them to Google Earth and visualize them is very slick (it does take Google Earth Plus a $20 annual fee to support this feature).

Overall I am VERY pleased with this unit it does exactly what I need (and then some) looks great very sturdy.

Want Garmin Zumo 550 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Discontinued by Manufacturer) Discount?

The new Zumo 550 is a big step forward in ease of use, but sacrifices some of the flexibility of previous units (Streepilot series, x76C series). The touch screen display and integrated buttons on the left side of the unit are easy to use even with riding gloves, and the new locking mount is a big improvement. GPS reception also seems to be GREATLY improved; not getting lost under dense tree coverage. The display is relatively big, bright and clear; but difficult to read in really bright sunlight. Also, much of the screen is used for large display items and touch "buttons", so the actual map display is fairly small. The built in battery is an improvement over the StreetPilot, allowing the unit to be used when the motorcycle is off. The battery also allows the unit to be connected to a PC without an AC adapter.

The new operating system is easy to learn and use, but lacks some of the flexibility of other units. Long time GPS users may feel restricted by the fixed display formats, but new users probably won't notice. The operating software still has a few bugs and route guidance prompts need some work, but Garmin does a good job of making updates available (with WebUpdater) and has already released v2.3.

The MP3 player is simple to use but does not support playlists and still seems to have software bugs.

I have linked the ZUMO to a bluetooth helmet (Dainese) and phone (LG-VX8500) and it seems to work very well. Although told that the MP3 would not work over bluetooth, it does in my set-up.

In summary: even with the display restrictions and software issues this is a great GPS for motorcycle use.

All the write-ups suggested this Zumo 550 was going to be impressive. They weren't wrong. The BIG positives, from my perspective:

1. Satellite acquisition must be seen to be believed. In my basement it took less than 15 seconds, out of the box, first power-up. That performance has been repeated every time since, with the exception of first-power-up after upgrading the firmware to 3.2. Thereafter it went back to sub-20 second acquisition.

2. Its built like it should be, like you wanted it to be. Solid. Its going to spend time on my Harley ElectraGlide and in my Corvette and I wanted someting that matched their image. I got it.

3. Firmware upgrade was a 5 minute affair, no hassles, no fuss, no tears. Several nice new features were added, for my 5-minute investment.

4. Interchangeable top and bottom plates, in contrasting black, are a nice little extra. They even included the Allen wrench for the 3-minute task.

5. There's no need to buy extra (read, "expensive") accessories. This was the biggie, for me. This unit ships with a bike mount, complete with hard-wire power connector, AND it ships with a car-mount, with its own power connector. The fact that Garmin includes BOTH mounts with this unit was the deciding factor for me. The fact that both docking cradles with each mount are thoughtfully designed to allow super-quick, super-solid on and off mounting of the GPS unit itself, is a nice added plus. Also, the voice quality and volume of the built-in speaker in the car mount is impressive.

6. Bluetooth pairing of both my Blackberry 8700 and my Jabra BT800 was simple and flawless. Thereafter, when the BB and the Jabra were on and the Zumo was insereted into either the bike mount or the car mount, the Zumo automatically paired back with each unit, within 30 seconds of being mounted. I love technology that works. The real zinger was that the Zumo synched the 400-odd contacts in my BB8700, inside of 45 seconds.

7. For me, simply put, Garmin hit a BIG homerun with the design, execution and packaging of their new Zumo 550. Is it expensive? Not really, considering I didn't need to go out and scrounge up the expensive extras Garmin included for free. And the little things, like designing a magnetically-positioned weather cover for the bike's connector pins, is just icing on a big, well-decorated cake.

Bravo, Garmin.

Zune Car Charger

Zune Car Charger
  • Handy car charger for Microsoft Zune media player
  • Lets you charge and power Zune while you drive
  • Also works seamlessly with Zune FM transmitter
  • Plugs into any vehicle's 12-volt cigarette lighter
  • Coiled cable curls up for easy storage; 1-year warranty

There's really not much to review but I figured I would counter the other (misguided) review on this item. The charger works just as fine for powering the Zune while in the car. I pretty much leave my Zune in the car and this lets me do that without having to periodically bring it inside for charging. The part that goes into the cigarette lighter is rather large so take that into account if you have any kind of obstructions around your power socket. The only other thing I noticed that surprized me a little was that the Zune display stays on when connected to the charger and playing music. There's nothing really wrong with that but I was just expecting the screen to go dark like it does when it is not connected to power. Oh, I also like the coiled cord which makes things a bit tidier than having a lot of loose cable cluttering up the console area. I recommend this product.

Buy Zune Car Charger Now

Had mine for 8 months. Little button on side of Zune connector either broke or fell off. This locks the connector into the unit until you use a pointed object to push in on the locking pin while pushing "button" on other side of connector. Trick is to not stab yourself when connector lets go.

Noise is probably dependent on vehicles electrical system. I get some low level noise in my '09 Toyota, but not in my Dodge.

I'm going to buy another, because it does work well.

I had a number of them quit working eventually, so I ordered two sets of four. Three of the walkie talkies quit working within the year. They would transmitt, but the speaker would not work. The batteries are great. The original walkie talkie batteries are still going strong even after years of weekly use. I just wish the rest of the walkie talkie was as reliable.

They work great. Battery life is also good. I read the instructions so I know how and what all the settings do andhow to use them. I live in a semi-rual area and reception ok at best.

EMPIRE Retractable Car Charger (CLA) for Verizon Motorola DROID 3

EMPIRE Retractable Car Charger for Verizon Motorola DROID 3I bought two of these car chargers for my new Droid 3. There were a couple here on Amazon that were cheaper than this one, but what I liked about the Empire charger was that it is retractable. I'm not a big fan of wires or cables as they aren't easy to neatly store. I did have reservations about this as the cable is very thin and the plastic that this is made out of feels light/cheap, which worried me at first. However, the charger works GREAT and the cable retracts very easily when the button is pushed (it doesn't get stuck). I'm happy with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone!

This is the second one I have bought. The first was well received as a gift, so I'd thought I'd do it again.

This is a nice car charger. This cord is longer than a comparable product with a coiled cord, so it's easier to talk on the phone while it's plugged in. The retraction button is a little hard to find at first, but that's minor. It also stores in smaller space than the coiled type. The price was GREAT! So far, glad I bought this.

PAC Ground Loop Isolator for 3.5 MM Applications

PAC Ground Loop Isolator for 3.5 MM ApplicationsI don't normally write reviews, but I didn't see any for this product and took a chance on buying it, and it worked out well, so I thought I should write one.

I have an iPhone that I use to play music via the aux-in port in my Prius and there was a lot of noise in the signal, especially if the headlights were on, and this was particularly problematic if I turned the volume way up for soft music (e.g. Renaissance lute music).

With this noise filter, that problem is gone.

I have a car stereo with an AUX-in port. Unfortunately, when my car is running and I have my iPod plugged in, I get a very obnoxious electronic whine (more noticeable during the summer at night, with the headlights on and the ac running...the more electrics running in your car, the louder the whine). It would get so bad that it would make listening to music more of an annoyance than anything.

Searching on Amazon for an auxiliary charger for my iTouch, I came across this in a "Buy these two devices together and save" item. And I am happy to say it completely eliminated all electronic whine/feedback. It could not be simpler to install...plug one end of the isolator into your AUX port, and the other end into your iPod/mp3 player/auxiliary accessory(Griffin AutoPilot FM Transmitter for iPod, Kensington LiquidAUX Auxiliary Car Kit with Remote for iPod; iPhone 1G, 3G, etc.) It works like a charm. The way it works is its circuitry isolates any ground loops in your stereo (depending upon how it was installed, you may have a bad ground and that can cause an annoying whine).

HIGHLY recommended for anyone who wants to listen to their music and charge at the same time.

I have an old school 15gig iPod which is great in the car because the buttons aren't on the click wheel. Well, the battery doesn't last anymore and everytime I played it with the battery adapter on, you could hear the whine from the alternator on acceleration. After plugging through the PAC, silence. I dare say, the music actually sounds better! Very, very satisfied.

I hooked my PC up to my TV and my home theater system and was getting some terrible humming in the line between the PC and the sound system. I put this ground loop isolator on the line and like that, no more unwanted noise. Highly recommend this if you have a hum from an AUX cord.

I had horrible transmission noise on my MazdaSpeed 3 when charging my iPhone 3GS and plugged in to the auxiliary port. I tried my phone in two other cars and couldn't reproduce the problem, it was definitely my car. After plugging the SNI-135 in to the auxiliary port and my phone in to the SNI-135 the transmission noise is gone completely. Definitely worth the purchase.
