ENERGIZER 180W Cup Inverter 12V DC cigarette lighter to 120V AC to power laptop notebook & more w/

ENERGIZER 180W Cup Inverter 12V DC cigarette lighter to 120V AC to power laptop notebook & more w/ 4 USB ports 2.1A shared compatible with iPad & moreThe Energizer 180W Cup inverter is a useful little gadget for powering a whole bunch of electronic devices on the go. It's important to be aware of its limitations, but 5 stars for the price and functionality.

There have been a bunch of reviews about how this works day-to-day, but since no one has yet discussed the technical aspects of the inverter it's worthwhile reviewing them instead.

First, while there's nothing in the documentation regarding how many amps this puts out, as this is rated 180W it presumably can supply up to 15A between the USB ports and the AC adapter. That's an important number, as most cigarette lighter fuses aren't rated above 15A. This means that this a. won't blow out your car fusebox and b. does have reasonable limits as to what devices can draw from it. However, the AC outlet has enough juice to successfully run most electronics short of something like a laser printer. This also includes a second adapter with direct-to-battery alligator clips if you're so inclined to bypass the cigarette lighter.

Second, the 2.1A draw for the USB ports is shared between all four ports. A 2.1A output on a single port will charge nearly anything quite quickly. However, if you have 4 devices plugged in, you're going to be running at 525 mA per device, which is actually not awful and more or less what USB 2.0 is rated at there are a bunch of nominal 'quick charger' adapters that provide this output. (Keep in mind that some older devices may require trickle charging at 200 mA, which this can't do.) Bottom line is that this will keep most modern devices at fairly stable charge levels while they're plugged in, but if you've drained the battery on 4 separate devices and plug them all in to recharge, it may take a while.

Third, this is a modified sine wave inverter, which at this price point is expected. (Pure sine inverters start at $200 and up.) For almost everything you'll likely plug into this device modified sine wave power is ok; you can't use something like an alarm clock or a drill, and you definitely wouldn't want to plug in very sensitive electronic equipment or an expensive stereo.

Finally, what's important to note about any DC-to-AC inverter with most 12V car batteries is that this is not something that you'll want to run with the engine off if you're going to use it for more than an hour or so. A standard 12V car battery isn't designed to repeatedly discharge to low levels, and doing so will dramatically shorten its life. If you really want to run an inverter off a 12V battery for extended periods of time, you're much better off replacing your lead acid battery with a deep cycle model that's designed to fully discharge. Otherwise, this is best either used for brief periods of time or when your engine is running.

Have been using for one week and unit works fine. It sits perfectly in cup holder of Lexus RX330. Feels well-built and solid. Heavy duty cable was bit difficult to get into cigarette lighter due to stiff wire prongs on either side of adapter plug. I wondered if they would go in at all but finally managed with alot of pressure...it's a tight fit. Conversely the two pronged plug which connects the cable to the unit fits loosely and does not seat firmly (SEE UDPATE BELOW). When initially plugged in, a red light on the top comes on and then turns blue when the unit is ready to use. I charge an iPad 4 or two cellphones along with the AC power brick for my laptop.

Regarding load capacity, there are limitations even though four USB ports and one AC port are provided. The USB ports are limited to a shared (total) capacity of 2.1 amps. This is okay for cellphones but recent iPads and other tablets may need the full 2.1 amps to charge correctly. The AC outlet specs indicate loads up to 180W continuous and surges up to 360W can be handled. Based on objective reviews of other inverters making similar claims I'd be somewhat dubious until someone does an independent certified test. Energizer provides no data on test conditions (SEE UPDATE BELOW).

Safety features are noteworthy though I haven't tested circuit loading/overheat protection. Under voltage (10.5V) and over voltage (15.5V) circuit cutoffs should protect this unit and your car battery. Despite these you can run down a car battery if not careful. Unit overheat sensors also provide additional protection. The owners booklet contains "Safety Guidelines" and "Warnings and Cautions". Please read them and adhere. These inverters are not toys but serious electrical devices which can damage auto electrical systems and do some serious personal harm.

Overall, I rate this unit Very Good. Very much recommended.

UPDATE 22 May 2013: I now rate this unit FIVE stars and EXCELLENT. I've changed my rating and title but leave the body of my review much unchanged so you can see how fast Energizer responds to customer concerns. I was contacted immediately after posting this review by a very knowledgeable Energizer Customer Support Rep...impressive! He wanted details on the connector issue. Turns out I was not pushing the connector cable into the inverter unit with enough force. Once I did this the connector seated very firmly. I was initially concerned about breaking something...no worry.

We also discussed the max wattage and power specs. I will quote..."Regarding the claims, this inverter was actually tested by a third party lab METLAB, as you will see on the bottom of the unit the label had the MET mark which is in compliance to UL458 for the US and CSA22.2 for Canada." Extensive testing backs up the claim this unit can output 180 Watts continuously for an extended period without overheating.

In summary, I'm impressed with Energizer's quick response and assistance. I'm now even more impressed with my inverter.

This is a thoughtfully designed nice piece of equipment which delivers what it promises, but there are limitations. An iPad charger is unlike most other USB chargers in that it delivers 2.1 Amps (or 10.5Watts) in order to properly and promptly charge the device; obviously with this 2.1A charger, an iPad will use up all the available current by itself, making it sort of pointless to plug in other devices simultaneously. I tried this out by plugging an iPad 3, iPad Mini and an iPhone into this unit and watching video on the iPad. While when it started, the devices claimed to be charging, but they quickly figured out they were not and lost the lightning bolt battery icon, or got the "Not Charging" label where the battery typically would be. So, just because you have 4 USB ports, doesn't mean you can charge 4 devices. Far from it. You should be able to charge 4 low power devices simultaneously as standard USB devices draw at most 0.5A apiece.

Installation was quick. It popped right into my Civic's cup holder, and while the power plug was a bit stiff getting into the cigarette lighter port, it did go in with a bit of firmness. Fine for charging multiple cell phones on road trips.

I spend a lot of time commuting. Some device is always running out of juice. This Energizer Cup Inverter is an amazing solution. It fits into a cup holder so now I don't have cables draped all over the place. Its 110 outlet charges my computer before I get on a plane and is perfect for devices that have their own special charger (like the Xoom tablet) instead of USB charging. The device has 4 USB charging plugs as well. It has multiple protection circuits to protect it and you car. It is well vented and delivers plenty of juice.

The device not only hits on all cylinders it goes beyond expectations. Energizer includes a separate cable to connect to an external battery. This is perfect for camping and other activities where you can simply plop down a batter and provide electrical power for radios or other devices.

Great product. Great price. Will equip all of my vehicles with it.

Sun Minicompass

Sun Minicompass Mini I with Split RingI purchased this as a lightweight hiking nut to replace my heavier compass, especially since it is only for backup if my Garmin ever dies on me while in the wilderness. The construction quality is great and it seems to be very accurate. The only reason I did not give it a 5 star rating was that the lanyard was not long enough after tying a knot in the end to allow it to go over my head so I could wear it around my neck. The lanyard is very thin and lightweight which help keep the total weight down to just 9 grams! Do no forget to melt the ends of the nylon lanyard to avoid fraying over time since this may weaken the already thin lanyard. I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to keep pack weight down but wants an accurate compass.

It was a while before I used this product. I generally keep the MP3 charged. HOWEVER...I have an off he grid camp where everything is rechargable so there are lots of "AA" rechargable batteries with adapters to "C" and "D". BUT there wasn't anything I could do to vastly extend the play time on the MP3. Well there is now! Just as the music stopped I thought, "Well, back to the CDs and cassettes". (I plug the MP3 into a boombox that I've wired several car speakers into). Then I remembered that I had bought this charger just for this application. Saved the day AND I got to look like a genius to my wife who thought this was overkill when I bought it. (All husbands know this kind of thing only happens about as often as a comet coming around where a wife actually admits that the husband has a working brain) I keep it in the camp all the time now. If you're going to be away from a grid source for a while this REALLY a cool and very convenient soulution.

The item arrived in good time and worked well until last week 4.24.13, and after trail and error I determined it was the cord. The adapter is still good so I use an extra one.

This is an excellent multi-use charger. It comes with the charger, cap, both the micro and mini usb cables, as well as a pouch. This is a must have for portable charging needs in the car, and be able to plug into a wall outlet.

This charger is very convenient and a good size. I noticed that a lot of these 2in1 (wall/car) chargers are a but bulky, this ones normal sized in comparison to the average car charger. It has a large blue symbol on it that makes it very obvious whether you plugged it in all the way and it is or is not charging your phone. It is pretty sturdy, I used it myself for about a year and half and had no issues, a male friend pulled it out of the wall once and it fell into pieces, literally. He fumbled his way through putting it back together (guesswork) and... it worked. Has been working still since then although it feels pretty fragile now ie the parts move around a bit and i'm pretty sure the inside parts are no longer in the right position. Regardless, it seems to be well build and can withstand being broken into pieces!

VELLEMAN K7300 UNIVERSAL BATTERY CHARGER/DISCHARGER KIT

VELLEMAN K7300 UNIVERSAL BATTERY CHARGER/DISCHARGER KITBottom Line: Skip it and buy a far superior ready-made "smart charger" for half the price.

First, the charger is good for single cell NiCad batteries, because it will discharge the battery before charging, thereby overcoming the memory effect. (NiCads tend to develop reduced capacity if they are recharged before being fully discharged repeatedly.) But for a battery (2 or more cells), doing this runs the risk of one cell discharging a little before the others, in which case their discharge ends up reverse charging the early discharger, which ruins the cell and hence drops the battery voltage (by 1.2 volts for every dead cell). So this function is of limited value, applying only to single-cell NiCad batteries.

But there isn't much call for NiCad single cells anymore; they have given way to NiMH cells, which are superior for nearly all applications (and are much kinder as well) to the environment, as they don't spread toxic cadmium when tossed in the trash). Moreover, NiMH cells don't have the memory effect problem, and in fact unnecessary discharge tends to shorten their life. Only a few stores still carry NiCad cells.

So is the charger good for NiMH cells? Alas, it lacks the sophistication of off-the-shelf "smart chargers" that sell for half the price, often with 2 or 4 of the newer pre-charged NiMH cells. (The older NIMH cells self-discharged at a rate of about 1% a day, which meant that even if they topped them off at the factory, there was a good chance they would be dead by the time they ended up in your radio at home. The new ones don't have this problem.)

What is special about the smart chargers is they use a microprocessor and sensors that monitor the battery temperature and voltage in order to avoid overcharging them. Charging too fast and too long are (after letting them discharge completely), the major causes of early loss of cell capacity. The program looks for the "reverse delta" in the cell voltage (after steadily rising while charging, it briefly drops back a wee bit), which is the endpoint for healthy charging. They generally monitor the charging time as well, shutting down even without the reverse delta if it goes on too long.

The Velleman unit does use a timer, but it is the only method of stopping the charge. It is better than nothing, but cannot take into account the amount of charge actually needed; it's like going to the gas station to fill up your tank, and pumping gas for 4 minutes and 32 seconds because that's the average time it takes to fill a tank. You are likely to end up with gas on the ground or with a tank that is empty again too soon. One more thing: if the power to the charger is interrupted, the timer starts all over again.

UPDATED REVIEW: My earlier review only gave this unit 4/5 stars because it wouldn't download the address book from my iPhone 3G. Please read on and see how this issue was resolved.

I got this unit yesterday at Mickey Shorr (Canton, MI). They installed it in my 2006 Eddie Bauer Ford Explorer in about an hour and I was off and running. The iPod integration is top notch. Using the touchscreen controls I instantaneously scroll back and forth between songs. So for the guy who installed this unit in his F-150, I'm not sure why you're experiencing the latency issue of 10-15 seconds to scroll to the next song, or go back one track. I feel bad for him because I'm thrilled with the speed and ease of use. The GPS is from Garmin who I believe to be the best. GPS in the unit is very accurate and could NOT be easier to use. Overall, with 15-20 minutes of fooling around I was able to master all the controls of the DNX6960 and same with my wife (since it's in her car).

I formerly had an issue with the unit in which it couldn't download the address book from my iPhone 3G (software version 4.1). The phone paired with the unit instantly (AWESOME!) but would not download my address book. The letters "DL" would show up at the top of the telephone screen for 3-4 seconds and disappear. This told me the address was being downloaded, but the address book touch screen icon was still greyed out. Low and behold, by mistake I found where the installer hid the bypass switch and it was set to "ON." So I figured this meant the unit was in bypass mode, meaning the parking break IS BYPASSED from having to be engaged to watch videos and download the address book. Apparently not because when I flipped it to the "OFF" position just for the hell of it, the address book touch screen icon became active. I said if I was able to figure this out I would let everyone know and rate the unit 5 stars. So here we are. I figured it out and I have no reluctance giving the Kenwood DNX6960 5/5 stars. I hope this helped someone out who was experiencing the same issue.

I was looking at the DNX9960 and this unit to replace the Pioneer F90BT that started to give trouble. I ended up going with this unit because it was much more affordable, the features I were interested in were more or less the same, and the form and screen size were very similar to the F90BT. It is not as modifiable as the pioneer but performance-wise it surpasses the F90BT by far. The interface is easy to learn, however setting the configuration for the optimum sound took a little work. The garmin navigation is my preference I am familiar with the interface and maps are easily available for any area (I am not using this unit in the US). The pre-outs are 5volt as compared to the 3volts on the pioneer. I am using this with an infinity 5350A multichannel amplifier and infinity components with a pioneer low-profile subwoofer, and the sound I am getting now as compared to the pioneer seems to be packing a little more juice. All in all, I am very satisfied with this head unit and would recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade. GO GET ONE.

After installing this head unit in my 2008 Ford F150 I got very excited. This really is a classy head unit in most respects. I've got my phone paired with the Bluetooth, the navigation seems very nice, Sirius radio sounds very good, even my steering wheel controls seem to work decently with the PAC SWIJACK, but... I used the Kennwood KCA-IP301V adapter to control my 120 GB iPod Classic. Immediately I noticed that it takes anywhere from 5 to 10 seconds (more often closer to 10) to switch forward or backward between songs, or to choose the songs from the list menu. Basically whenever you switch songs the unit freezes for the 10 seconds or whatever, and then resumes. Album artwork loads just as slowly too, which I really wouldn't mind being quicker, but would sacrifice in a heartbeat if it meant I could navigate between songs quicker. Also, when trying to navigate through my music using the A-Z menu, only about half of the letters actually brings up music that starts with that letter (M gets you O, P gets you R, but L might actually get you L, etc.) In essence, it's nearly impossible to listen to your music without going crazy. It can literally take you up to a full minute to try and skip ahead 6 songs!!! Try to press track advance twice (which you WILL unconsciously do when the unit doesn't respond after the first press} and then it freezes up for the 10 seconds, then skips ahead twice which is fine if that's what you want, but often I only wanted one song skipped, so you have to press the back button, which starts the 10 second clock all over again! I called Kenwood tech support and was told that this particular new line of head units (2010 I assume) does indeed process iPod functions slower that past year's models. I was not able to confirm that a software fix might be coming later on, only that the current slow operation is "normal" for this particular lineup. Maybe a software update is coming, maybe not. Who knows?

In closing, if you intend to use your iPod like I do (my CDs never even leave the house any more), then this head unit isn't even worth the trivial price you'd pay to have it shipped to you. If you don't use iPod, then I can't imagine you being unhappy with it.

I would give this product less than one star, but I think if you leave the iPod issues out of the picture, it's a GREAT player. But if you're like me and your entire music collection is on your iPod, AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Shame on you, Kenwood.

UPDATE I purchased a brand new 64GB iPod Touch and it had the same issues with this head unit as my older iPod Classic. I have returned the unit. An awful first experience owing a Kenwood product.

Want Kenwood Excelon DNX6960 6.1" In-Dash Double-DIN Navigation DVD Receiver Discount?

I placed an order through Amazon.com with Car Toys for the DNX6960 on 14 February 2011. Wanted to buy from Car Toys as Kenwood's web site lists them as an authorized internet retailer, this ensures that I will be able to receive Kenwood's Direct Warranty Service. Car Toys shipped the unit quickly and it arrived in excellent condition.

I easily installed the unit on 03/10/2011 in addition to these Kenwood Accessories; KTC-HR300 HD Radio Tuner and a Kenwood KCA-iP302 iPhone/iPod Hi-Speed Audio and Video Cable (latest model). The accessories connected easily and interfaced flawlessly with the unit. The most difficult part of the install was finding a concealed location in my Harley Truck to mount the HD Tuner Box, its 6 ½" x 1 3/8" x 4 5/16" size proved a bit challenging. The Navi's GPS Antenna was mounted under the plastic wiper cowl, and to my surprise the unit immediately began acquiring satellites inside my garage after the ignition was keyed on. I've just begun to adjust the audio and radio settings, will move on to customizing the display and then setting up the Navi and Bluetooth Systems. A 4th Gen iPod Touch will be added in a couple of weeks.

Bottom Line: Although I've had very little actual hands-on time using the actual features and functions of the DNX6960. I'm VERY optimistic that I will enjoy this unit very much once I've completed the setup of its Navi and Bluetooth Systems, and finally installed an ipod Touch for MP3/video play. The unit is basically plug and play if you use the correct harness adapter to connect it to your stock wiring harness. Just make sure you plan ahead for a good location if you're adding any sizeable additional accessory.

UPDATE: (03/14/11) The Hands-Free setup for the Bluetooth connection with my Motorola Cell Phone was a breeze, and my phones address book was automatically transfered to the DNX6960. After listening to how well the DNX6960 played HD Radio and CD's, I quickly decided that I would not wait two weeks to get a MP3 player, I purchased a 32GB iPod Touch 4th Gen the weekend following the units install. WOW! I'm very impressed with the way it interfaces with the Kenwood. The sound is VERY good and using the playlists I setup on the iPod Touch makes selecting and listing to artists and tracks a breeze, that also makes it much safer to do while driving too. Boot up time is a tad slow, but I have remote start, so the unit can be fully operational and playing by the time I reach the vehicle. I recommend to anyone planning to connect an iPod or iPhone to this or any Kenwood HU, make sure that you buy an actual Kenwood iPod/iPhone Audio and Video Adapter Cable. It's possible that some who get lousy iPod/iPhone performance, do so because they are actually using a Kenwood Compatible Cable, not a Kenwood Sourced Cable. For me, the addition of the iPod Touch ups the audio ante and makes listening to the DNX6960 an even more enjoyable audio treat!

Wanted my Bluetooth Microphone in an unobtrusive location, so I slid its little stand behind the top of the A-Pillar Cover and the cable is routed behind the pillar cover down and out behind the driver's side kick panel, then underneath the dash to the unit. The microphone is barely visible, even from inside the vehicle. It has just enough cable exposed to allow it to be swiveled forward or rearward depending on the drivers height. So with my GPS Antenna concealed and the Bluetooth Microphone almost invisible, I feel I'm a less conspicuous target to thieves.

Kenwood Excelon DNX6960 6.1" In-Dash Double-DIN Navigation DVD Receiver

I purchased the DNX 6960 unit and had it professionally installed in my Lincoln MKZ. I also purchased the iPod cable and pac swijack...off subject, but both of THOSE items were excellent.

Back to the DNX 6960:

I decided that this was a great "inexpensive" Excelon unit. Kenwood is a phenomenal brand and Excelon is their flagship model. Unfortunaeltly, after having the system installed for a week, I put my first cd in the unit. It proceeded to play, and it sounded extraordinary (after tweaking the sound previously). It wasnt until I decided to eject the CD that I had an issue...."MECHA ERROR". It just sits there and all you hear is a bunch of internal movement. The CD is stuck and now it won't play anything the CD anymore! :P

Although that is a definite turn off...especially because the same slot for the cd player also hosts the dvd player, I can still use the other features.

I was thoroughly pleased with the GPS of this unit Dead on accurate! Screen is beautiful! Touch is responsive! Sound is amazing! Phone feature awesome! EVERYTHING but the CD/DVD player issue has kept me extremely pleased. I am giving this review a 4 out of 5 because I really don't listen to CD's all too often since I have my ipod, and you can't watch a DVD and drive. It deserves a good rating on absolutely EVERYTHING else! I know not very many people will have an issue like mine. If you are looking for a great all around unit, this is the one. I just wish you all better luck than I had.

Update: 5 star rating!

Eject button is now working every time that it is pressed. CD's/DVD's play and eject with absolutely no issue. I live in MI, and we had a some pretty cold weather (possibly too cold for the unit to function properly...?) It works fine now. No complaints still! The DVD playback looks crystal clear. This is a great unit.

Schumacher SE-3000 Manual Fleet Battery Charger

Schumacher SE-3000 Manual Fleet Battery ChargerI needed a charger for a large set of deep cycle batteries, something that would put out lots of amps continuously. And of course I didn't want to spend a lot of money. This charger has worked great, met all my expectations.

But understand what it is, a big heavy manual charger. Left on it's highest setting it will fry all but the biggest batteries. But if you have big batteries, 600 amp hours or bigger, it's great. That's amp hours, not CCA or cold cranking amps.

Why only 4 out of 5 stars? Two flaws. Two of the sheet metal screws on the outside are stripped, easy to fix. The other flaw is worse. The cables are only 6 gauge. If you use the charger at full potential, outputting 60-80 amps, for more than 30 minutes the cables get hot. Once the cables started smoking, melting the insulation, luckily I noticed and turned off the charger. This thing should have a least 4 gauge cables.

But I think most people will use it on car batteries, so the hot cable issue shouldn't be a problem.

The battery charger works wonderfully and it contains the desired features, but the sheet metal box isn't very sturdy. Like other chargers I've seen at various stores, the manufacturer saved a few pennies by using a light gauge sheet metal. The first item delivered was dented even though the shipping box didn't appear to have any damage. The return and exchange was quite easy. I still had the first one when the replacement item arrived several days later. The second item was also damaged. Luckly, I could assemble one good item out of the two I received.

Ordered two of these for local fire dept. they have trucks with 6 volt all the way up to 24 volt starting systems and one charger is easier to keep track of than four different voltage ones. A couple things i recommend after using this charger are: keeping an eye on the clamps they get hot on high charging rate with high CCA battery, and on 6 volt low it is not a trickle charger, so don't leave timer on to long. All that said it is a good value for a small fleet or farm in a big charger.

Charger is functional in 6, 12, and 24 volts. Will do lite duty charging. The cables are very lite duty, so be careful if you are charging high amps in 12 volts or using 24 volts. The case is very lite duty also, even though it was packaged well, it was dented but did not affect use. I kept it as it was minor and I figured it would eventually get bumps and scrapes during use. In my opinion not a "fleet" quality charger. I will get by as I am using it as a backup second charger. Bottom line: You get what you pay for. It was about half price of a "fleet" quality charger.

One of the only 3 usb port, 2.5amp charger I could find. Works great for most my devices, but it won't charge my Asus Transformer Infinity TF700T (it won't charge through any USB port aside from the included wall plug), nor will it charge my brand new Samsung Galaxy S4. I tried using the included AC only cable adapter, and tested with a plethora of USB cables, including factory cables that came with said devices.

Hitachi DB3DL2 3.6-Volt 1/4-Inch Hex Drive Screwdriver

Hitachi DB3DL2 3.6-Volt 1/4-Inch Hex Drive ScrewdriverThis is my 2nd Hitachi power driver....same one. I had my 1st one for over 3 years , which I totally rely on for work as a PC tech. The forward / reverse switch started getting sticky. I will be sending it in under its life time warranty for repair (a big plus). The new model apprantly is a little thicker with a grip and almost an inch longer....the switch feels better...comes with a brighter LED light...and overall its more quieter / smoother. There's a lot of torque...too much even @ the lowest setting (1) for my personal use most of the time. I also use it for personal home jobs...which has the potential for heavy duty functions. The battery life is good....and uses the same type. It only takes 30 minute for full charge. Great tool!

Before getting into the review, I need to comment that I am a stickler about my tools. I tend to find one brand that has a great reputation, works well for me and proves reliable, and then I usually stick with that brand. Over the past 20 years, I've been particularly pleased with both my Porter Cable and Bosch acquisitions and have centered my tool acquisitions around these fine brands.

After much deliberation, I decided to get the Hitachi DB3DL2 instead of the Bosch PS10-SA. While the Bosch has excellent reviews and a deserved reputation for being extremely powerful, it was a bit "too much" for what I was seeking to do with a small and compact driver. When I need major drilling or driving, I'll always turn to my big PC 19.2V drill/driver. But, when I want a small driver for general light screw driving around the house, I need something that is fairly compact, light, but still plenty powerful. But, not TOO powerful. And, many of the reviews on the Bosch stated that the PS10-2A was just a little too big, and a little too powerful (in fact, it apparently has a reputation for stripping or over-torquing screws).

While I have seen many different Hitachi tools (with very happy owners), I had never really considered purchasing one for fear of going with a new brand. Also, the 3.6V power source concerned me as being "too light, too little". But, I decided to give it a try with the intent on returning the driver if it didn't prove its worth. Well, this little guy is now my primary driver around the house and will be enjoying a long and fruitful life here at home. This is an outstanding tool.

First, the DB3DL2 is very light and comfortable in the hand. It drives screws in an out like a banshee, and you get a really respectable service life out of a single charge. I haven't had any problems driving screws for the installation of window blinds or tight electrical box screws. I've also driven large #8 and #6 screws into wall studs with ease. The clutch system on this driver is excellent for the small driving work for which the system was intended -very easy to dial in and find the correct torque release setting.

The LED lighting on the front of the driver is welcome for dark area work, such as cabinet installation or electrical work (where you don't have a power source for illumination). Battery installation and removal is easy, though the visual cues for battery insertion could be better (it's a hit or miss type insertion where you may have to turn the battery a little to find the correct orientation to complete the insertion). Battery charging is straightforward and only takes about an hour. The folding pistol grip is great when you need to quickly change the orientation of the driver for a little more torque, but it easily converts back to a typical straight driver configuration (which I find I use most of the time).

No real issues to report. It has been a super-reliable, very well designed and made driver which has been a welcome new tool and brand to my tool box. I won't hesitate to purchase another Hitachi tool from this point on, and will include Hitachi as another "preferred vendor", along with Bosch and PC. I highly recommend this fine tool.

PROS:

Perfect feel "in hand" light but stout, perfectly sized (even for someone with gargantuan paws such as me), and a great rubberized grip which gives you confidence when holding the driver. Excellent ergonomics

LED lighting on the front which reasonably illuminates the work area. The Bosch does not have such a light, and that was a major factor in my decision to get the DB3DL2.

Excellent clutch system which is ideally set for the light-duty torquing that this driver was intended to do. It works perfectly and is easy to dial in.

Very strong driver when you need it -this little guy can really crank when you need it (especially if you have the clutch set in drill mode).

So far, great battery life and consistent torque and power.

CONS:

I wish there was a way to lock the handle in either "straight" mode or "pistol" mode. While I've not yet run into a situation where the driver has collapsed while in use, it would provide a nice sense of security when really pushing down hard on the driver in "straight" mode.

The battery is round and keyed, and it will only fit into the grip in one way. However, there isn't any immediate visual cue that says "insert this way only" -such as a pair of identical symbols on battery and grip, or an asymmetrical shape which instantly indicates how the battery should be inserted. Not a big deal as you will find the correct rotation of the battery in a few seconds, but it could be improved.

There is a single LED light on the front of the driver, but it is not directly centered on the work area (offset by about an inch). DeWalt puts three lights on their drivers for consistent illumination of the work area from all angles. Adding one or two additional LEDs would really help in this department.

Buy Hitachi DB3DL2 3.6-Volt 1/4-Inch Hex Drive Screwdriver Now

I purchased this Hitachi screwdriver to replace a Milwaukee 6547-22 2.4-Volt Two Speed Cordless Screwdriver for which I've had to purchase three additional pairs of batteries beside the ones supplied with it. The third replacement set failed after they had only been in use for five months.

Admittedly, I am a very poor steward of batteries I often forget that I have placed them in the charger. Without a near-perfect charger (which experience tells me the Milwaukee is certainly not) NiCad's quickly fail. When subject to the abuse I give them. Again, citing my own experience, LiIon batteries are much more tolerant of the abuse I give them or the currently available chargers are better suited to my form of abuse i.e. I have never had a failed LiIon battery.

The Hitachi screwdriver is almost identically the same size and weight as the Milwaukee but seems to go about three times longer on a freshly charged battery.

They both have the same torque limiting feature and the very handy rocker forward-stop-backward switch and the speed selector switch is in the same place on each. The Hitachi has a positive action bit holder (that I find the be a mixed blessing because I use a magnetic bit holder) and a marginally useful flashlight led.

Hitachi also gives a two-year battery warranty, which may be useful if my prior experience with LiIon batteries does not persist.

On net: The Milwaukee tool has served me well for a very long time and, but for the battery problems, I would never have replaced it in its time, it was a five-star product. I think that the Hitachi screwdriver is a worthy successor.

I purchased one of these about 2 years ago and have used it daily for my work. This thing is amazing! The adjustable clutch works perfect and even though it's only 3.8v, it will drive in fairly large screws. I have used, abused, and done more with this screwdriver than any other one I have seen. People often comment on it and say "where did you get that"? I think I am going to buy another one just in case they discontinue it.

Want Hitachi DB3DL2 3.6-Volt 1/4-Inch Hex Drive Screwdriver Discount?

I bought this to primarily use for my son and I's R/C hobby, but it has quickly became a go to tool for around the house jobs as well. It beat's pulling out my heavy 19.2 drill. The battery lasts and lasts and when it starts to fade, just swap it out with the spare ( a nice option as some only come with on battery). The batteries charge quickly as well.

The clutch works flawlessly. It's very sensitive and on the lowest setting is perfect for our r/c cars. They go just far enough that I can finish tightening by hand, which I really like.

The only gripe I have, but is in no way a deal breaker, is I wish there was a way to lock it in either pistol or straight. I hope the hinge doesn't wear out, but since I use it 99% of time in pistol, it shouldn't. Also I like having the option to use it as a straight driver. Some lower priced unit's do not offer this.

For the price, this screwdriver cannot be beat. I have used other's priced twice what this one is and there is no way they are worth it. Give the Hitachi a shot and don't look back!

BatteryMINDer Charger/Maintainer/Desulfater - 12V, Model# 2012

BatteryMINDer Charger/Maintainer/Desulfater - 12V, Model# 2012I have a Corvette and live in snow country. That means putting the car away for the winter. Fortunately, I have a place to store the car. The down side is it isn't heated. Batteries will freeze if they are allowed to discharge. To prevent that, I need to either drive the Corvette regularly, bring the battery inside, or put it on a charger.

I started my career in electronics designing battery charging systems for hand held devices. I found that the "Ideal" charger is complicated: different features are needed to quickly charge a battery versus maintain it over the winter. Until recently, you needed a different charger for quick recovery versus long term storage. While not the end-all product, this charger is a great, full featured device that incorporates more of the ideal charger features.

Battery chargers come in many types: Bulk Chargers, trickle chargers, and smart chargers like BatteryMINDer.

Bulk chargers are designed to quickly recover from a "dead" battery. They tend to have little sophistication, just pouring out lots of energy quickly. This is fine for bringing up a partially discharged battery and getting the car started quickly. But such brutes may overcharge the battery if left on for extended periods. And, they may not have temperature compensation. The bottom line, they may ruin a battery if left connected for extended periods like the four months I need to store my car.

Trickle chargers try to tackle the storage problem. Prior generations of these chargers just used a low-current charger with a maximum voltage output. These "weak" chargers simply don't have the power to quickly recharge a battery, but are reasonable at keeping one "full" under some conditions. They are cheap and somewhat effective.

Neither of these "Dumb" chargers deal with significant details of maintaining a battery's charge. The voltage of a fully charged battery varies with temperature about 12.5mv per degree. That doesn't sound like much, but over the 100 degree temperature variation that is possible with the car in storage, this is 1.25 volts a significant voltage difference. If the charger's set point is too low, the battery will discharge; if too high, the battery will get too much energy and will over-heat. Such heat kills batteries by boiling off the water in the battery fluid.

Battery manufactures publish the "ideal" charge profiles for their products. Here is a typical charge profile: [ Google "lead acid battery charge profile"] This charging profile has four phases: bulk charge, absorption charge, float charge, and testing.

The "Smart Chargers" such as BatteryMINDer, solve these problem with with a micro-controller. They sense the state of charge in the battery, the outside temperature, and adjust charging accordingly. The BatteryMINDer provides all of the charge phases listed above, and adds two more: a Qualification phase and a desulfidization phase.

Qualification / Soft Start Phase this is to test for a very dead battery The charger is current limited, in this case to just 1/2 Amp. It uses this phase to check for reversed connection of the battery leads, damaged batteries, etc. For a salvagable battery, this phase slowly brings the battery up to a voltage level where it can be charged more quickly without generating excessive, damaging heat.

Bulk Charge/Fast Charge Here the unit puts out maximum current. The BatteryMINDer puts out 2A. This is far less than typical Bulk Chargers (up to 25 A), but will recharge a typical car battery in about 12 hours. This slower rate makes this charger a poor choice for the quick-fix where you find that you had left your lights on overnight and are late for work. Massive bulk chargers are a better choice here, but are more stressful on the battery.

Float Charge This mode is where the magic happens in these smart chargers. The Float Mode provides a temperature compensated trickle charge to the battery. It senses the ambient air temperature or with a low cost accessory the temperature at the battery to adjust the trickle voltage and current to the environment. Unlike simple trickle chargers, this mode pulses current on/off to achieve a complete charge. The tender stays in this mode for about 15-60 minutes, depending upon the brand.

Battery Test This mode turns off the charge entirely for a few minutes and then looks at the voltage over time. It is natural for the voltage to drop slightly. Excessively rapid drops indicate internal issues with the battery. The BatteryMINDer provides an LED indication for a damaged battery. For a normal battery, the rate of voltage drop is fed back into the Float Charge mode to adjust the on/off time of the current pulse to assure that the battery gets only the charge it needs.

The combination of temperature controlled float and battery testing makes this the perfect system for long term storage.

I ended up buying a cigarette adapter for the system about $6 more. This saves me the hassle of popping the hood. I just plug the adapter into the cigarette lighter adapter and plug in the BatteryMINDer. (Note: This only works on cars where the accessory/lighter socket is ON when the car is off. GM cars work this way).

I have reviewed the datasheets and found this the "Ideal" charger for me. (I still have a bulk/starter charger for the lights-left-on, gotta-get-to-work situation).

I will know next spring how well this worked, but I am confident.

This charger brings lead acid batteries back from the dead.

I had a battery so dead this smart charger wouldn't recognize it was connected. I used a "dumb" trickle charger on the dead battery overnight—the battery still wouldn't hold a charge but that gave it enough juice to hook up the BatteryMINDer. The BatteryMINDer ran its "Desulfater" program for two days after which I gave it a go—started my V6 on the first turn.

I'm interested to observe how much life I get from this battery now.

Buy BatteryMINDer Charger/Maintainer/Desulfater - 12V, Model# 2012 Now

After purchasing multiple batteries because they had sat dead for too long (I purchase a lot of wrecked vehicles that sit for months before they are sent to auction) I got to thinking there must be something out there that can revive an otherwise worthless battery. The final straw came on the last vehicle I repaired; a F250 diesel with two batteries that were only 9 months old, but would not charge sufficiently to start the truck. Faced with spending $200 to replace the batteries I began researching other options. The reviews on the BatteryMinder were enough to convince me to take a chance on it, although it still seemed too good to be true. I'm here to tell you that after a little over a week of desulfating the batteries are as good as new. I followed the recommendations in the instructions and tested the batteries every three days to verify the voltage was increasing and then removed the charger when they stopped gaining voltage. Do yourself a favor and give this thing a try the next time you are faced with replacing a battery that has gone bad. With the price of batteries these days the charger actually costs less than most batteries.

This is a great product. I don't know how it works, but it does. It both charges and desulfates the battery, or in my case the two batteries connected in parallel. I have 4 other BatteryMinder products, but I think this is probably the most capable of the ones I have.

I have had this BatteryMINDer for a little over a month now and I love it. We are connecting it to each of our vehicles (including motorcycles)for about a week at a time. This is one of those products that you don't realize the savings you have until a year or two after you purchase and use it. EVERY review I have read about the BatteryMINDer has been positive. It doesn't just charge your battery, it doesn't just trickle charge your battery after to prevent over heating and boiling out the battery acid, it desulphinates the plates inside which is the main reason batteries die after a few years. This will more than double the life of your car/boat/motorcycle/... battery. The price was great and the delivery was quick!

Schumacher SP-200 2.4W Solar Battery Maintainer

Schumacher SP-200 2.4W Solar Battery MaintainerAfter much contemplation and research,,, and calling the manufacturer I've been informed (buy the manufacturer) that this unit does NOT have any method of charge control. Beware! ... you can easily overcharge your battery(s) with this unit. Overcharging can cause serious irreparable damage to your battery. Therefore, unless you're continually monitoring the charge state, and can disconnect this charger at the appropriate point, you need to use a charger that incorporates a charge controller. Don't use this unit as a "connect it and forget it" method of keeping your batteries charged or "topped off". You need something that has a charge controller. 73.

UPDATE: In response to other comments; yes, if you're charging (maintaining) large capacity batteries such as automotive or marine, a controller may be unnecessary. Caution due however with smaller batteries.

The charger works as advertised. The only thing I found lacking was a status light indicating that current was flowing to the battery when plugged into the cigarette lighter. I had to use a multimeter to check contacts at outputs for voltage 19.2 volts. It appears well made, price is reasonable, and shipping was speedy.

Have a truck I don't drive every day but alarm drains steady power and after 4 days dead. Not only does that kill a standard car battery but makes it inconvenient to get the truck started. So after my research, went with this solar maintainer because its very simple and well made. No need to worry about overcharging a car battery since its so low of wattage. The one downside or warning is don't start the vehicle with this still plugged in because it suppossedly will backfeed from the alternator and fry the unit. I wish there was a way where I just hardwire this in and not worry about it truly, still researching if a controller will prevent that. By the way mounted on my dash with some doubleback tape.

I have this controller running for about 4 weeks now. In general, it is hard to impress me. This controller actually did. What I like the most about it, is the fact that I can set certain parameters that matches my setup. Also, you'll be able to check on charge current and the load current via the display. The accuracy is a different story. There are many ways of connecting the controller in regards of wiring, size of the wire used etc. If the wire gauge is not sufficient, you'll have a voltage drop across the wire. I managed to connect a 4 Gauge wire between the battery(s) and controller, since I wanted a fairly close reading. The controller seems to be off a few hundred millivolts. This is not really a problem if you have a DVM available to measure the battery and compensate for the display reading. I haven't checked the current readings, but think I am happy from what I see, even if it may be off a little. I have a set of PV's totaling 500W and even on hazy days they push between 10-15 Amps through the controller. One could expect up to 25 Amps on real sunny days and depending on charge condition of the Battery(s). So far I have seen 18 Amps on charge current in the morning after a night's run.

Another feature is the charge AH and the load AH. I have at the time of this writing about 400AH in and a little less out, meaning I saved 5.5kWH just within a few weeks. However, this is not the primary reason for the Solar setup, being independent with the system that is supplied, means a lot more to me than the savings. Also, whatever the panels deliver, does not have to come off the grid. Another nice feature is, that you can switch the load out with press of one button.

I am quite happy with the price to performance ratio.

This took forever to arrive. When it did, it has performed as advertised. The price was attractive, especially since I purchased as a backup to be on the shelf for a hot-spare. It is PWM, not MPPT for its charging algorithm so not the newest technology. I question the temperature reading I'm getting off of the probe (supplied my own as it does not come with one) and do not see a way to calibrate.

Premium Vehicle Power Charger for Samsung VGA1000, A680, A740, A760

Premium Vehicle Power Charger for Samsung VGA1000, A680, A740, A760This items was shipped 20 days after the order was placed.

This item is advertised as compatible with LG PM325 however as packaged, the connecter does not insert all the way into the phone. There are no instructions included with the device. Fortunately, I figured out that there was a small plastic sleeve that could easily be removed from the part that fits into the phone to allow the connector to go all the way in.

So far the device works fine.

I bought this with the slim travel charger, and both have the same problem. Previous reviewer didn't indicate that they had problems with it, so maybe I'm the problem. I'm a fairly savvy electronics user, and I don't see how I could be screwing up the process of -plug the charger into working DC jack, plug charger into phone-.

Yes, as noted in previous review, I slipped the piece of plastic off, the charger plugs all the way into the phone.

When the charger is only plugged into the DC jack in my car, the LED shows a steady green, but when the other end is plugged into my phone to charge it, the LED blinks red. I'm assuming that's a power issue.

Slime 50001 Power Sport Smart Spair

Slime 50001 Power Sport Smart SpairI initially bought this for my emergency repairs for my motorcycle but after I sold the bike I bought a Jeep. This small compressor fits in the tiny secure cubby in the back of rig. I would not recommend using this compressor to air up your tires after a day of wheeling but if you get a flat you can use it (though it takes a while) to fill your tire. Actually I use it most when I check my tire pressures and just want to add a couple of pounds. Great tiny compressor for those who don't mind waiting for a tire to fill and have limited storage space.

While on our annual motorcycle trip, one of our crew got a flat rear tire on his 2011 Harley ElectraGlide Limited. We pulled into a small gas station and surveyed the problem and found a huge nail in the middle of the tread of the rear tire. The station's air hose was on the fritz so I pulled out the Slime kit and we went to work. The guy had a plug kit but no way to air the tire up.

Slime pump to the rescue! Our bikes were loaded down with alot of gear for our trip so we were pleasantly surprised at how well the little Slime pump aired up the tire.

It took a few minutes but brought it up to 36 pounds without much effort.

One thing you need to be aware of is how HOT the brass hose connection gets after its been pumping for awhile. There's a little black tag on the air hose that says HOT but

I picked it up to see what it said and fried my fingers in the process. The instructions also say not to operate for more than 8 minutes. The tire was aired up in less than that so it wasn't an issue.

I was the only one out of 14 bikers that had this kit and it sure did save the day!

Most other reviewers have never used it but love the peace of mind it brings. If you do alot of riding you need to have this kit on board! It'll keep you from being stranded!

Buy it!!!!

Fits nicely in one of the saddlebags. Have used the inflator a few times while out of town to keep the right pressure on tires. Have not used the Slime material on a tire. Hope do not need to.

This is a neat little/portable kit that's small enough to fit in a saddle bag of a motorcycle and it also contains a 8 oz container of Slime Tire Sealant, which by the way is only enough for just one tire repair according to the directions. The compressor is small and noisy, it can only run for 8 minutes at a time as it becomes very hot (this could be a problem if it's too hot to throw back in the saddle bag). My purchase is solely to have a repair kit on my motorcycle and to use it in an emergency only.

Good kit for a good price.
