After I realized that I was gonna have to go the route of the FM transmitter to play my ipod in my car, I did tons of research. I must say that this unit sounds really well, if you configure it right. The first thing you need to to is set your ipod EQ to "treble reducer" or "small speakers". (I have yet to figure out why the EQ affects the sound through the dock/line out, but the volume control doesn't) The high end sounds will break up and annoy the crap out of you if you dont! Then you have to have multiple stations to work with. I find myself switching presets once every couple of car rides depending on where I go in town. I live in Louisville, KY and there are plenty of free stations which work well. While you can scroll down to 87.9 by holding down the right two preset buttons and scrolling, I have found this to be useless where I live. Stations higher in the band are overridden much easier than this one for some reason. Also, as with all fm transmitters, there will be some sound of static hiss as you crank up the volume. I find that this scares lots of people, but it really isn't that bad in the end. Ingeniously, if you turn on the air in your car to the lowest setting, it seems to match the static well and canel it out:) All in all this is a great solution for those with CD player only car stereos. The ipod is charged as you drive and you save hundreds on getting an ipod compatible stereo installed or hardwiring a connection from the back of your car stereo, which you can't even do (that I have seen) with my 2001 honda civic.

I have the Kensington 33185 in one car and the iCarPlay Plus in the other. While the iCarPlay Plus is decent, the Kensington wins out.

First, the Kensington has better reception, which I believe is largely due to it being tunable. You can set it to any station on the FM radio frequency so you get to control which station works best for you in your given area. The iCarPlay Plus has three stations pre-set and they can not be changed, so if those three are being used in your area by high-power FM stations you're out of luck. Luckily, I can use the three pre-sets in my area because there are no high-powered broadcasts on those stations already, but the Kensington still sounds better.

Second, the Kensington's controls are molded into the unit that plugs into the cigarette lighter while the iCarPlay Plus' controls are separate. This is a problem for the iCarPlay Plus because the unit tends to get flung around during sharp turns or lost between the seat and center console during normal use causing the buttons to be pressed and the station it broadcasts on to get changed. It can be very dangerous to try to find the unit again and switch the broadcasting station while driving. Since the Kensington's controls stay in place plugged snuggly into the cigarette lighter, they are always in easy reach and never get accidentally changed.

Third, I protect my iPod with iPod Armor which gives accessibility to the iPod's dock connector at the bottom of the iPod. The slot is plenty big for the standard USB and Fireware connector that Apple ships. However, the iCarPlay Plus' connector, for some unfathomable reason, is nearly twice the size of the standard connector, therefore I have to remove my iPod from the armor every time I want to use the iCarPlay Plus. This is annoying! The Kensington uses the same size connector as Apple which means that I don't have to remove my iPod from its armor so I can just plug in and drive away.

While the iCarPlay Plus is a nice unit that does work quite well, the Kensington 33185 is the overall winner based on sound quality, reception, and thoughtful engineering.

The idea of playing your iPod through your car's FM radio is a good one. And it works well if you are basically staying in one place. You can identify a frequency with no signal, set your transmitter to that, and you're fine.

However, it's very painful to use on long trips, since as you travel you move into areas where your chosen frequency is no longer empty and you begin to hear lots of static. At that point, you have to start looking around for another frequency. In a recent trip (from New England to Pittsburgh), sometimes we were lucky and didn't have to change for an hour and a half. At other times, we wound up searching for new free frequencies every 20 minutes or so. This was annoying with two of us in the car; it would have been near impossible if there was only the driver.

What one of these devices really needs is a "seek" function that works the opposite the way the radio's seek function works. The radio seeks to the next solid station. It would be great if only I could press a button and have it seek to the next clear frequency. Yes, I'd still then have to tune the radio to match, but that's not bad. It's the searching around for a free frequency that's painful.

I've been an iPod junkie for as long as I can remember, and for as long as I can remember, I've been trying to get my iPod to work with my stock Bose stereo in my 2002 Nissan Altima. I've been through at least 3 or 4 other FM transmitters, the iTrip, Belkin Tunecast and a couple of generic ones. I live in LA, so anyone from a metropolitan area will agree with me and say they pretty much all sucked. Lots of random interference no matter what "empty" station you think you may have found and lots of "sibilance" where the "s" sounds are pronounced and fuzzy. Very annoying. I finally found a means of direct connecting my iPod to my stock Bose stereo about a year ago and I was incredibly happy with the sound. THen about 2 months ago, my car was broken into and my STOCK stereo was stolen (in addition to other things). After it was replaced by the bodyshop, the newer stock stereo did NOT have the ability for a direct connection, and sadly, VERY sadly, I lost my direct iPod connection. Needless to say, in my desperation, I began looking at reviews at some of the newer FM transmitters, and found an overwhelmingly positive average for this Kensington and decided to give it a shot. As other reviewers here will tell you, I was BLOWN away by the sound quality! (you MUST set the iPods EQ to "Treble Reducer" though, it get's rid of the sibilance completely). Choosing 88.3 as the frequency, there's VERY minimal background static that's almost non-existant once the car is on and in motion. The sound is darn near that of my lost direct connection, and dare I say, BETTER than FM radio! No kidding! I've driven through all of LA with it, and have yet to hear any static interruption. I will agree with some of the other reviewers here in that if you move the connector to the ipod, it will sometimes cause static noise, but it's rare, and ONLY happens if you're fiddling with it. Great great unit. Highly recommended.

After reading the reviews about FM transmitters I was concerned that I would be happy with this purchase. As soon as I plugged it in and found a frequency it worked perfectly. Rarely have to change frequencies in the FM crowded NY, NJ, Philadelphia region.

The sound quality is definitely not CD quality but is certainly good enough for car listening.

I rated this inverter 5 stars because it charged what I wanted, and when I checked the ac output with a Kill A Watt Electricity Usage Monitor 120 to 121 volts displayed. Also 63.2 Hz to 63.3 Hz displayed when I check the frequency. I only connected items that consumed less than 100 watts. The inverter was tested with two different computers and a cell phone. I charged a 90 watt computer by itself on my 100 watt inverter. Then I unplugged the 90 watt computer. Then I plugged in and charged the 85 watt computer at the same time with my cell phone. Because all of my items charged, I recommend this product. Also the inverter I received looked a bit different. The inverter that arrived does not have the socket size adjuster. (The little switch that is on the part that goes into the cigarette lighter.) This is good because I didn't need it. My inverter fit in both of my cigarette lighter sockets perfectly! Also you can look at the CyberPower web site and see that this inverter has a 150 degree swivel head. I hear the fan in the inverter, but the sound is so low, I do not mind it at all. Also I only used this inverter while the vehicle is turned on and running. This inverter works great for me!

Bought this at Wal*mart a few months back and at first it worked pretty well. Then it began cutting off and then back on again over and over which caused the computer to lose more charge than it was getting. The only way around this was to leave the car running the whole time it was in use.

A couple days ago it started making an awful noise when plugged in. The noise was more of an annoyance than anything until a burning smell came from it and smoke came out of the side air vents!

For the nearly $40 it cost to buy it I would say it is definitely NOT worth it (and it was a big mistake to throw the package and receipt out) since it lasted only about 3 months!

Edit: Just wanted to add that it also began blowing the fuse to the 12v accessory socket...

I'm not to sure if this, is, the inverters fault or my car's but I will assume it is the inverter. First use it ran hot and got loud. After maybe 40 secs it tripped the cig lighter circuit and turned off.

I didn't keep it long enough to rate it durability or reliability for a car trip. Which was the intention. I need a simple little inverter for my 15 watts of DVD playing power needs and a little for my cell phone. Well it was working fine for the short time I used it. But within a minute the fan kicked on and it was the loudest fan I have heard in an inverter. So I returned it right away.

Sad too as I love my CyberPower UPS systems for my computers at home. So I was looking forward to trying an inverter under their brand labeling. Even though they likely didn't design the internals.

Other than the loud fan, for the short time I did have it, I liked the firm swivel joint as it held it's position great. No annoying lights. But at the same time a dimly lit LED would have been nice to know it is getting power and working. But the fan makes that painfully obvious.

I also could not find details on the packaging or unit about the amperage of the USB port. It did power and charge my Galaxy S3, but not sure how fast. So not sure it's enough for a 2W + tablet, etc.

Sadly I just couldn't accept the volume of the fan and returned it. 1 star = "I hate it" on the Amazon scale, and the ultra loud fan made me "hate it".

The light is actually super bright. There are three LED bulbs in there so it gives off a lot of light when it's dark out, and my video doesn't really do it justice. Also, I apologize for the poor video quality. I initially shot it in 1080p, but the file was too big to upload so I had to downgrade it to a more memory-friendly setting. Anyways, I hope you like the video and find it at least somewhat helpful. This solar charger is awesome and I take it with me everywhere. I use my droid razr pretty hard, so I need all the juice I can get, and since I never seem to be near an outlet when I need one, this thing has been a lifesaver. Places I've taken it with me so far include: beach, camping, concert, and hiking. Also, one last thing. I reccomend using the OEM usb charge cable that your device came with because some generic USB cables are shoddy and they just don't seem to work as well on average.

I'm a bit dissapointed with this product. After leaving it in direct sunlight for over 20 hours, the charger capacity was still at 50%. When directly in the product details, it states 13 hrs for a FULL charge via solar. That being said, the main reason I bought this was to have a solar charger with enough Amps to charge my phones (EVO, GS3) AND tablet (Galaxy Tab 10.1), which it does. (FYI, The tab needs to be turned off to charge).

At 50% solar charged, it will only provide about 25% battery recharge to the tablet and approx 60% to my phone. So, granted it does work. But its unacceptable for a solar charger to not be able to charge 100% within 20 hrs of direct sun exposure.

I followed the instructions as stated by charging 100% via USB first and that provided 100% battery to my EVO and about 25% to the tablet. I'm torn on whether or not I keep this.

I picked this up to use while hiking and camping, and so far it's been great. It works well with my Samsung galaxy s3, and the light is a cool and useful addition. I just throw this guy on my backpack while we're out hiking or lay it out at the campsite for a few hours. Highly recommended!

I picked this up after spending an entire afternoon, from like 11:30 until a 7:30 game, at Lambeau Field for Family Day, tailgating. I had my son with me, we both had our iPhones and iPads. I didn't mind if his things got low on battery, but I wanted to make sure my phone stayed working so I had it available during the game. So every once in a while I'd plug it into the cigarette charger, and start the car and let it run for a bit, getting it back up to 80 or 85%. I realized I needed something to help me charge stuff up away from home.

So I did some digging and found this unit, and figured it was worth a shot. I liked that it wasn't strictly a solar charger, that you could charge it up via USB or wall outlet as well. On the down side you can't "charge and play", but for me that was less of a requirement.

I ordered this, and two extra solar panels. I fully charged the unit via the wall outlet, then turned an ipad onto one of my clock programs that keeps the screen lit without sleeping, and let it run down, then plugged it into this and let it run this down as well overnight while I had the LED light turned on. I then set it out on my patio table and let it charge itself back up. I had it sitting out all day, but I did not angle it to keep it tracking the sun directly (was busy doing other things). And about four oclock the sun's shadow is hitting the table anyway. It did not get fully charged during that stretch (was only about 6 or 7 hours in direct sunlight but not perpendicular to it at all times) but I didn't expect it to from what they said. The following day I did manage to get it topped off.

I bought two extra panels for it as well, and it definitely charges MUCH faster now, although I'm usually just using it via usb or wall outlet since I haven't been in a position to need to do it strictly via solar since purchase. But at least I know when I do, it'll be working well.

I, as another reviewer, had worried at first after peeling off the protective cover, since like his, mine was tucked under very well. I, too, wondered if I just did a boneheaded thing... But a tweezers got that last little corner out from under the plastic and it works like a champ.

If you get the add on panels, there is a button on the piece that bridges them to the XL (it came with one, and the panels came with one, so I actually have two adapters now in case one breaks or something) and when you push the button in sunlight, each panel has an LED that lights up to show it's completed the circuit and is charging the battery. Nice touch since otherwise there's no way to know for sure. Only complaint is the panels are kind of cheaply made, and one of mine came broken where the spring clip from the other inserts to hold it together. Fortunately I was able to use that on the outside, so there was nothing to hook there, and I can use it anyway.

The carabiner works for the unit alone, but there's no way I'd use it when I have the panels attached -as noted, they're poorly constructed where they hook to each other and those corners break easily. And I'm not sure I'd want to have this hanging from the suction cups either. They're double sided suction cups, like an hourglass, and not only would I not want this coming off the window at the wrong time while driving, they'd also impair the solar collection both cups on at the same time detracts from a large percentage of the solar panel area. But with my panels they'd not be very useful anyway.

I bought this AGM battery because I got tired of my old battery and its acid leaks. I was lucky to be able to fix the acid leaks a little early so no real damage was done to my car. This battery is not an exact fit though. I had to use it without the plastic battery tray because the positive cable was too short and would not reach with the tray in place. So the battery is installed but there is tension on the + cable and it sits a little crooked in the engine bay.

BatteryMINDer Charger/Maintainer/Desulfater - 12V, Model# 2012I have a Corvette and live in snow country. That means putting the car away for the winter. Fortunately, I have a place to store the car. The down side is it isn't heated. Batteries will freeze if they are allowed to discharge. To prevent that, I need to either drive the Corvette regularly, bring the battery inside, or put it on a charger.

I started my career in electronics designing battery charging systems for hand held devices. I found that the "Ideal" charger is complicated: different features are needed to quickly charge a battery versus maintain it over the winter. Until recently, you needed a different charger for quick recovery versus long term storage. While not the end-all product, this charger is a great, full featured device that incorporates more of the ideal charger features.

Battery chargers come in many types: Bulk Chargers, trickle chargers, and smart chargers like BatteryMINDer.

Bulk chargers are designed to quickly recover from a "dead" battery. They tend to have little sophistication, just pouring out lots of energy quickly. This is fine for bringing up a partially discharged battery and getting the car started quickly. But such brutes may overcharge the battery if left on for extended periods. And, they may not have temperature compensation. The bottom line, they may ruin a battery if left connected for extended periods like the four months I need to store my car.

Trickle chargers try to tackle the storage problem. Prior generations of these chargers just used a low-current charger with a maximum voltage output. These "weak" chargers simply don't have the power to quickly recharge a battery, but are reasonable at keeping one "full" under some conditions. They are cheap and somewhat effective.

Neither of these "Dumb" chargers deal with significant details of maintaining a battery's charge. The voltage of a fully charged battery varies with temperature about 12.5mv per degree. That doesn't sound like much, but over the 100 degree temperature variation that is possible with the car in storage, this is 1.25 volts a significant voltage difference. If the charger's set point is too low, the battery will discharge; if too high, the battery will get too much energy and will over-heat. Such heat kills batteries by boiling off the water in the battery fluid.

Battery manufactures publish the "ideal" charge profiles for their products. Here is a typical charge profile: [ Google "lead acid battery charge profile"] This charging profile has four phases: bulk charge, absorption charge, float charge, and testing.

The "Smart Chargers" such as BatteryMINDer, solve these problem with with a micro-controller. They sense the state of charge in the battery, the outside temperature, and adjust charging accordingly. The BatteryMINDer provides all of the charge phases listed above, and adds two more: a Qualification phase and a desulfidization phase.

Qualification / Soft Start Phase this is to test for a very dead battery The charger is current limited, in this case to just 1/2 Amp. It uses this phase to check for reversed connection of the battery leads, damaged batteries, etc. For a salvagable battery, this phase slowly brings the battery up to a voltage level where it can be charged more quickly without generating excessive, damaging heat.

Bulk Charge/Fast Charge Here the unit puts out maximum current. The BatteryMINDer puts out 2A. This is far less than typical Bulk Chargers (up to 25 A), but will recharge a typical car battery in about 12 hours. This slower rate makes this charger a poor choice for the quick-fix where you find that you had left your lights on overnight and are late for work. Massive bulk chargers are a better choice here, but are more stressful on the battery.

Float Charge This mode is where the magic happens in these smart chargers. The Float Mode provides a temperature compensated trickle charge to the battery. It senses the ambient air temperature or with a low cost accessory the temperature at the battery to adjust the trickle voltage and current to the environment. Unlike simple trickle chargers, this mode pulses current on/off to achieve a complete charge. The tender stays in this mode for about 15-60 minutes, depending upon the brand.

Battery Test This mode turns off the charge entirely for a few minutes and then looks at the voltage over time. It is natural for the voltage to drop slightly. Excessively rapid drops indicate internal issues with the battery. The BatteryMINDer provides an LED indication for a damaged battery. For a normal battery, the rate of voltage drop is fed back into the Float Charge mode to adjust the on/off time of the current pulse to assure that the battery gets only the charge it needs.

The combination of temperature controlled float and battery testing makes this the perfect system for long term storage.

I ended up buying a cigarette adapter for the system about $6 more. This saves me the hassle of popping the hood. I just plug the adapter into the cigarette lighter adapter and plug in the BatteryMINDer. (Note: This only works on cars where the accessory/lighter socket is ON when the car is off. GM cars work this way).

I have reviewed the datasheets and found this the "Ideal" charger for me. (I still have a bulk/starter charger for the lights-left-on, gotta-get-to-work situation).

I will know next spring how well this worked, but I am confident.

This charger brings lead acid batteries back from the dead.

I had a battery so dead this smart charger wouldn't recognize it was connected. I used a "dumb" trickle charger on the dead battery overnight—the battery still wouldn't hold a charge but that gave it enough juice to hook up the BatteryMINDer. The BatteryMINDer ran its "Desulfater" program for two days after which I gave it a go—started my V6 on the first turn.

I'm interested to observe how much life I get from this battery now.

After purchasing multiple batteries because they had sat dead for too long (I purchase a lot of wrecked vehicles that sit for months before they are sent to auction) I got to thinking there must be something out there that can revive an otherwise worthless battery. The final straw came on the last vehicle I repaired; a F250 diesel with two batteries that were only 9 months old, but would not charge sufficiently to start the truck. Faced with spending $200 to replace the batteries I began researching other options. The reviews on the BatteryMinder were enough to convince me to take a chance on it, although it still seemed too good to be true. I'm here to tell you that after a little over a week of desulfating the batteries are as good as new. I followed the recommendations in the instructions and tested the batteries every three days to verify the voltage was increasing and then removed the charger when they stopped gaining voltage. Do yourself a favor and give this thing a try the next time you are faced with replacing a battery that has gone bad. With the price of batteries these days the charger actually costs less than most batteries.

This is a great product. I don't know how it works, but it does. It both charges and desulfates the battery, or in my case the two batteries connected in parallel. I have 4 other BatteryMinder products, but I think this is probably the most capable of the ones I have.

Wagan EL2003-5 400 Watt Continuous Power Inverter with 5V 2.1 Amp USB Charging PortsI got this inverter to replace one we had -a 175 watt one -that wasn't powerful enough for my wife's new laptop. This one has plenty of umph to do the job, it's just a bit on the loud side. While it's on, the fan is too, and when on the floor of the passenger seat, it was about 60 dB -about the volume of a normal conversation. You can definitely hear it over the road noise. There is a handy switch on the unit so you can leave it plugged in all the time and turn it off when not in use.

It comes with a cigarette lighter plug, as well as battery clamps. I believe you'll only be able to get the full 400 watts if you connect directly to the car battery, but we only need about 250 watts so the cigarette lighter plug works fine.

The USB ports have enough power to charge an iPad. My iPad showed "Charging" when plugged into the USB ports rather than the usual "Not Charging" when plugged into my old inverter that had USB ports

I'd recommend this but I'd want people to know that it's not whisper quiet like my old one.

First the quirks: The unit will shut off automatically if you are either not using any power or are using really low power. I purchased it to use in the car for various things but when using it to charge AA or my DSLR batteries it will only do so for a short period of time before turning itself off and requiring me to flip the switch. Highly annoying and I will be replacing it for this reason (or selling/trading to someone).

Things I like: The size and design are appealing and its mostly metal so shouldn't heat up as much as some others. Like a few people have said it isn't as loud as some people think, more than tolerable.

I will be contacting the manufacturer to find out if the low or no power use is a design feature or a flaw with my unit. Will update this with a comment with what I find out.

We travel a lot by car over very far distances so a power inverter is a must have for watching dvd's and charging phones etc. Our older inverter same wattage finally died on us and after research I was nervous about the reviews I read on that brands newer models so this one seemed like a good bet and I was right. I have to disagree with the other reviewers about the noise, compared to my old one (which was only 4 years old)this is whisper quiet, it does make noise but as I've said compared to the whistler that I had it is significantly quieter. I'm sure the USB's will come in handy as the old one did not have them and the on/off button does not stick up really high so it wont get switched off accidently by the plug which was a big problem with our other one. Also, it does include the car charger and the battery clamps unlike the majority of other ones I saw, most only had the battery clamps which is fine if you are camping but what about while you are driving to the campground? Great buy for the price!

I read some other reviews on here where people complained that it wasn't powerful enough for their application when plugged into the cigarette lighter, and I just had to shake my head. Most cigarette lighter covers have a nice sticker on the inside that clearly states 120W max draw. Use the included battery clamps if you want to run something that draws more power, a 400W inverter can only work with what it's being supplied, so don't blame the product for not delivering 400W when you plug it into a 120W outlet.

Hooked directly to a battery, this little thing fired up my blender, which has an initial draw of almost 800W on startup, and did fine running it under load (ice and margaritas!). Like others have stated, the fan stays on and it's a little loud, but anything you're going to be running off of this is likely to make as much noise, except for a phone charger. All in all, it's great so far, and so much smaller than I expected.

Generac 5606 XP Series XP8000E 12,000 Watt 410cc OHV Portable Gas Powered Generator With Electric StartI was excited when I found out that Generac got back into the portable generator business. They sold their portable generator line to Briggs and Stratton a few years ago but they are back to producing portable generators again. I always liked the Generac portables. They were quality products at reasonable prices. I've owned a Generac 4000EXL for 12 years. It is a great little generator and the only one I knew of at the time with an OHVI engine. My experience with the 4000EXL is the reason I purchased the XP8000E.

I ordered my XP8000E over the Internet. Due to the bad ice storm in the Northeast, none of the local dealers had them in stock. I paid $50 less than Lowe's sells it for and that included free liftgate delivery, which was nice since this unit weighs 200lb. In retrospect, the ability to return it to Lowe's would have been worth the extra $50.

The XP8000E was well packed. The packaging is ingenious and if you follow the instructions, removal is really easy. On the down side, following the instructions means you are cutting all four corners of the box so if you have to return it, you have no box. The generator is mounted on top of a heavy cardboard support. It suspends the generator just enough so you can slip the wheels on without having to lift it at all. Once the wheels are on, the generator rolls easily out of the now flattened box. The only thing I didn't like about the old red Generac generators is that the wheels were under the motor end and the handles were on the alternator end. The alternator is the heavier side of a generator so you were lifting the heavy alternator end whenever you moved it around. I was pleased to see that the new models are designed so that the weight is over the wheels rather than the handles. This makes moving the XP8000E almost as easy as the 4000EXL, even though it weighs twice as much.

The next step was to fill the generator with oil. The XP8000E Operator manual specified 3 different oil viscosities depending on ambient temperature. There was no oil that could be used for all temperature ranges. This is a nuisance because in New England, temperatures can vary widely and I didn't want to have to change the oil 4 times per year (for each season). Conversely, the engine manual for this generator said 5W-30 full synthetic oil could be used from -20°F to over 100°F. Since this conflicted with the operator manual, I called Generac for clarification. They told me 5W-30 synthetic could be used at any temperature and that is what they use at the factory on their test generators. I picked up some MobilOne 5W-30 and proceeded. The first thing I noticed when filling the generator with oil is that the lower support (a U channel) is upside down from how it was on my old 4000EXL. The U is facing up. The support is also directly below the oil fill, the oil drain and the oil filter. What this means is that it will be nearly impossible to change the oil without getting some in the channel. With the old models, it would just run off and providing you had a strategically placed pan underneath, there would be no mess. With the new design, the channel fills with oil. Since the engine is directly over it, you can't get access to clean the channel so the oil will slowly drip out over the next few days. I'm not sure what the engineers at Generac were thinking but this is a very bad design. Next I gassed up the generator. When I removed the gas cap, I discovered there was a mesh filter cup in the fill tube. This interesting way of filtering the gas makes it difficult and slow filling the generator. The filter cup prevents you from inserting the fill nozzle of the gas can more than 2 inches into the opening. The filter also restricts the flow so the combination makes filling the generator very slow. Pour too quickly and you will spill gasoline everywhere. Considering this generator has a 9 gallon gas tank, this is a significant inconvenience and another design flaw.

I fired up the generator after filling it with oil and gas. It started right up but I noticed a few more design flaws. Generac went to great lengths to put all the controls on one panel. This makes controlling the generator easy because you don't have to walk around the generator to reach the various controls. Unfortunately, this arrangement is poorly implemented. The choke, which was easy and smooth to operate on the older models is now controlled by a cable. The choke positions are vague at best. Also, if you are not very gentle with the choke lever, you will pull it out too far and then it jams. If you don't pull it out far enough however, the generator won't start. It is near impossible to put the generator in the full choke position without jamming it. Then you must wiggle the lever to get it aligned so you can push it back into its socket. Also, the on/off switch and start button, which were separate on the older designs are combined into a single rocker switch on this model. Left is off, center is on and right starts the generator. It takes very little pressure to move the switch to any of the 3 positions. I could easily see someone inadvertently pressing start when trying to turn off the generator, thus grinding the starter mechanism. You have been warned so be careful! Last, the fuel shutoff valve is extended through the front panel via a plastic knob/shaft assembly. It is difficult to turn and I'm betting the plastic shaft will crack from stress over time. So that is at least two and possibly three more design flaws.

That said, as long as you get the choke to the proper position, the generator starts easily and it is as quiet as the 4000EXL Pretty impressive considering the engine is twice the size. Next I checked the voltage and frequency. The frequency was 63.5 Hz with no load, which is excessively high. Most motors will not like this. My well pump specifically states that the frequency must be no more than plus or minus 1 Hz. Frequency in a generator is directly related to engine speed. Higher engine speed equals higher frequency. I applied a 6000W load to the generator and adjusted the engine speed to obtain a frequency to 60Hz. I called a friend who also bought this model and told him what I found. He checked his generator and also found the frequency to be 63.5 Hz. In conversation, he mentioned that his generator was running poorly out of the box. I told him to check to see that the foam element was oiled. If not, this can cause the generator to run lean. When he examined the filter, he found the foam element was not installed properly and was actually folded in half so it wasn't completely covering the paper element. He suggested I check mine, since he found it difficult to install properly due to the placement of the filter housing. I checked mine and sure enough, mine was folded over too. So far, I was not too impressed with the quality control. I ran the generator for about a half hour with various loads. Thankfully, it ran great without flinching.

I shut down the generator and stored it in the garage. A few days later, I went into the garage and noticed a strong gasoline odor. Since the generator was the only new addition, I went over to see if that was the source. It was. I examined the unit and found gas was leaking near the gas shutoff valve. I checked the tightness of the hose clamp on the gas line. It was properly tightened. Closer examination revealed the gas was coming from the valve body. There are two screws on the face of the valve. I thought perhaps they may be loose. I took a small Phillips screwdriver to snug them up. One of the screws was very loose and turned freely. It had obviously been stripped during assembly. I'm disappointed at this point but no big deal. It looks easy to replace so I'll just email Generac on Monday for a replacement part. Hopefully we won't have a storm before then.

I got a reply Monday with the names of 2 service dealers in my area. I called Generac because transporting a 200 lb generator to a dealer 30 minutes away would be a major pain in the back. Plus, I don't have a pickup and the generator was leaking gas. I had drained the tank over the weekend but I was unable to get out every last drop, so a 30 minute drive with gas leaking in my SUV was not an option. I explained this to the rep on the phone. She told me I could not replace the part myself because that would void the warranty. Excuse me? The manual tells me I must adjust the valve clearance after the first 25 hours of use and every 100 hours after that. I am qualified to adjust valve clearance but I can't replace a simple valve? Please!!! I pressed the issue with the customer service rep. She put me on hold. When she came back on the line, she suggested that I put a towel under the generator to catch the gas and bring it to a dealer for repair. My brain's internal filtering system shut down at this point as I asked her, "You expect me to drive 30 minutes with a generator leaking gas onto a towel in my car?" I was persistent and finally she agreed to order me a part. She questioned me about exactly what part I needed and I told her the fuel shutoff valve that screws into the gas tank. She put the order in and told me I'd have it the next day. I was happy and thanked her. The next day, nothing arrived. I got the part 2 days later. Not great but still not bad. I opened the box and prepared to install the part but it was the wrong one. She sent me the valve from the GP8000 instead of the one for the XP8000E. It would not work in my generator. Working in the service industry, I know how difficult it is to explain what is wrong over the phone. A picture is worth a thousand words. With that in mind, I took a picture of the valve she sent and labeled it "incorrect part". I also took a picture of the valve in my generator and labeled it "required part". I emailed both pictures to the rep. She apologized and placed a second order. Again, it did not ship as promised but arrived the following Monday. I opened the box and again they sent the wrong part. This time they sent the plastic control knob for the fuel shutoff but not the actual valve. I was amazed at this point. I called Generac and asked to speak with a manager. I was told the customer service manager would call me back but she never did. I got desperate at this point and called the two service dealers previously emailed to me by Generac. The first dealer could not look up my model number. He said it wasn't in his system. I called the second dealer and he is trying to help me. I just hope I can get this resolved, otherwise I have a $1300 paperweight. The dealer told me that he has seen several of these valves leaking because the screws were stripped during assembly at the factory.

My biggest concern is that I have requested 3 times that a manager from Generac call me but none has ever called. Based on my experience, I'd recommend that you run far away from the Generac brand. If you need support you will be left out in the cold. If I ever get this resolved, I'll post an update.

Update: I finally got a call from the customer service manager at Generac. She initially insisted that the correct part was sent. I asked her if she looked at the pictures I emailed. She said yes, but everyone she spoke with told her that was the correct part. I suggested that perhaps one of them should walk down to production and look at an actual generator. Obviously, they have the correct part when they assemble the unit. She told me she would call her vendor and get to the bottom of this. She told me the generators were not built at their facility but shipped already assembled. I'm not sure what that means. I always thought Generac builds their generators in their own plant but I got the distinct impression that this is no longer true. She did call me back the next day and I got the correct part 2 days later. Total time from my first call to receiving the correct part was about 2 weeks. If anyone ever need the fuel shutoff for the XP series of generator, the part number is 0G85920101.

Needless to say, I am very unimpressed with Generac's quality control and customer service. While the XP8000E offers good bank for the buck, I have serious reservations about recommending it. My 4000EXL has lasted over 10 years. I'll be curious to see how the 8000XP fares long term.

This would have easily have gotten 4 stars if it weren't for the quality and customer service issues I experienced. To get 5 stars, they would also have to fix some obvious design flaws like the poor choke and the U channel engine support that collects oil. A better designed start switch would be nice too. Perhaps the key type I've seen on other units... -Joe

Update 4/20/2009

We had our first power outage since I got the new generator online. It performed flawlessly. My well pump, which challenged my old generator was no problem for the XP8000E. The voltage and frequency stayed solid under load. The voltage never dropped below 112V, even with 2 refrigerators, the oil furnace, some lights and the well pump running. The frequency stayed within 0.4Hz. I think that is pretty impressive for a portable generator.

Update 4/28/2009

I received a very nice call from the director of customer support at Generac. We discussed the concerns I had with her customer support department. She assured me they have been addressed. She also told me that she had discussed of my suggestions with her engineering department. I'll be interested to see if Generac addresses these issues but I was impressed that they read the reviews on Amazon and took the time to call me personally.

I bought this fourteen hours before we lost power for 182 hours.

OPERATION

It's very simple to operate. You could easily show a child. It was easy to fill. If you accidentally spill a little fuel it doesn't end up over the control panel or the muffler. There is easily accessible first-stage fuel filter in the filling area. Very nice feature. It has an hour meter which is very handy. I like the options for plugging items in. They give you a very nice 25-foot extension cord for the 30 Amp circuit. VERY nice.

PORTABILITY

It is very portable...easy to roll and maneuver. It is heavy. Two good-sized male adults or three people to load and unload from a pickup truck. One person can easily lift one side to maneuver over a curb.

Easy to assemble. All you have to do is add the wheels, add oil, add fuel. The fold-down handles are VERY solid and just a really nice feature. I rested my garage door on the frame so I could have the muffler outside.

NOISE

You are not going to have long conversations around it. It's louder than my 650 but it's supposed to be. I did not feel it was too loud but I'm sure someone makes one that is more quiet.

FUEL EFFICIENCY

We ran a 1,500 watt heater, a TV/satellite receiver, two notebook computers, a wireless Ethernet router, a satellite modem, a 300 watt light, a 150 watt light, a 250 watt infrared lamp, a livestock heated water bucket for the miniature donkeys and a heated water dish and heated blanket for the barn cat and our large GE fridge. Plus we used a few other items on occasion but everything above was on all the time. I filled the tank as full as I could...over-filling it according to their instructions so it probably has a little more than eight gallons. We ran it for 14.5 hours and it was still running when we turned it off for the night.

I've always liked the Generac name and have had a good experience with them. They give you everything you need for your first maintenance. They give you a paper funnel. So if you buy this while the power is out you can get it up and running quickly.

Negatives: Noise, the oil level "dipstick"

One more negative. Changing the battery. The engineer who thought this little nightmare up should be flogged. The Torx head bolts are on so tight I went through two Torx head bits...and I mean broke...before I could get the item off to access the battery. It should have been accessible from the frame. Really? Feel the need to hide the battery, did ya? I still love the generator and would buy it again but if I ever meet the engineer who made the decision to hide the battery there's going to be a fight

To start, in my updated review I would bump this to 4 stars if ratings editing were possible.

Like another reviewer here, I am the proud owner of a 10+ year old Generac 4000xl. That model ran great the entire time I've had it, though is not quite powerful enough to start my well pump without struggling. I've wanted a bigger unit for some time and last December's ice storm here gave me a good reason, so I went with a name I already knew and trusted. I also decided to go with the XP over the GP for the "True Power" technology, though I'm having difficulty determining how that actually works as nobody at Generac Customer Support can explain it to me other than "it cleans up the power". Anyways, I bought my unit at Lowes as they have it for a much better price that Northern Tools. the model number for Lowes is 5708 (vs 5606 from Northern Tools) though they are the same machine from the same assembly line. Everything out of the box was easy. Nice packaging, easy setup, etc...as others have already stated. So I was hopeful. Before starting I picked up some synthetic 5W30, got everything ready to go. I then checked the air filter to make sure my prefilter was lined up correctly per suggestions here and found that there was no prefilter. I called Generac about this and they stated there is not supposed to be one, which is a little confusing as others here have stated that their units came with a prefilter. So anyways, I started the unit and it seemed to surge up and down for a few seconds until I adjusted the choke. Surge went away and I pushed the choke all the way in and she was up and running fine. I let her run for about 15 min then put a small load on it...everything seemed fine. Took off the small load and went to power up my 3/4 HP well pump (I believe it draws about 4500W to start...well within this Genset's ability) and the gen started the pump but for about 10 seconds after the start, the engine on the genset surged up and down...almost as if it were starved for fuel. "Well this aint good" I thought. It evened out finally but I'm sure it was NOT good for my well pump...certainly would not be good for any electronics that may have been attached. So I reproduced the problem several more times and called Generac. Their customer support, while polite, had no useful advice other than "take it to a dealer." I called my local dealer who will look at it even though I bought it at Lowes (the local dealer doesn't sell XPs). He stated it sounds like it needs some carb adjusting. So that's where I'm at....I dropped $1350 on a brand new generator and right out of the box it runs poorly. Generacs's response..."we have your money, we can't help you."

The only other idea I've come up with is due partially to what another reviewer stated....the air filter precleaner. Since mine did not come with one, and the lack of a precleaner could cause the engine to run lean, I may try installing one ($0.55 at the local dealer) to see if that helps out. The Rep at Generac did state that there should not be one (even though other folks have them in their units and the instruction manuals clearly state that your prefilter should be cleaned) but I'm a little leery regarding Generac Customer Support's level of knowledge.

I'm giving this 2 stars for now because I'm hopeful that it may be a simple carb adjustment and nothing more. I expect a Generac GN engine to run flawlessly, not run like a cheap Chinese knockoff. Fortunately there is a parts and labor warranty for this unit and other than my time trailering this thing to the store and back, it should end up working out okay. I should have been able to give this 5 stars as I did with my 4000XL many moons ago, but Generac's extremely weak customer support and the fact that this should have been adjusted correctly out of the box has made that impossible. If my local dealer needs to send any charges my way, I will certainly be taking it up with Generac Management as this unit should not need ANY adjustment out of the box. I have already shot them an email asking management to contact me about this issue. I'm not too hopeful for a response.

UPDATE 9/2/09

I picked up a prefilter from the local dealer and it made no difference as far as how the engine would surge under a heavy load. I spoke with the company that installed my well pump and they informed me that starting watts for the pump will run around 4000W well within this Generator's means. Also, never received a reply from Generac Customer Support. Looks like I'm stuck taking it in for an adjustment at a local service center.

Update 9/4/09

I received a call from the rep at Lowes who sold me this unit. We talked about how poorly it was performing and he thought it was likely due to the carb setting at the factory. Since you can't adjust the carb yourself anymore (thanks for nothing, EPA) there is not much that could be done other than returning it or bringing it to a service center and HOPE that Generac would cover the adjustment. He therefore offered me a swap for another unit he had in stock. The new unit works great. No more hunting under load. It also sounds better while running and the voltage is a steady 120/240. As an aside, I opened up the air filter and a prefilter is in fact installed...this after the Generac Rep insisted "the instruction manual is wrong, it should not have a prefilter." Whatever, no harm done outside the loss of some time and 2 quarts of Synthetic oil. If I could update the rating I would bump it to a 4. I would give it 5 stars if it weren't for Generac Customer Support's lack of knowledge.

I've noticed that some poeple have complained about some of the "features" as if they were design flaws. I'd just like to give my perspective.

The unit is constructed out of steel (and perhaps cast aluminum). The wheels are semi-solid, meaning no air, meaning no flats. If anyone has tried to push a 200+ lb object with a flat tire, they know how hard it is. The tires do develop flat spots, but the flat spots are hardly a hinderance to rolling. I'd much rather have a little "thump thump" than have to spend 10 minutes inflating a flat tire.

The OHVI engine is pressure lubed with a filter and a pressure cut-off switch (that could be bypassed in an "emergency" if you were sure that the pressure switch was the problem). This means that the engine parts are fully lubricated and the oil stays cleaner, longer for longer runs between changes. The fuel valve is a little sticky, but a little bit of silicone spray makes it a little easier to turn. I would sure hate for it to be so loose that it vibrates closed during use, so the tight turning is a positive to me.

The choke does have a faint click into the middle position. You can also just estimate it by placing a finger behind the knob. Really it's just a choke, and while there is a "full open" and a "full closed" anything in between is just that, "in between." The convenience of it being on the front panel outweighs any percieved "need" to feel it "click" into a halfway position. Perhaps a little cable lube (like a teflon dry lube for bike chains) would help make it smoother, but mine was just fine the way it was.

The batteries do die rather quickly, I blame the cheap battery charger that lets the user overcharge the battery and boil out the acid (yes they are sealed, but they do have vents, and they will boil). A replacement battery is available from Generac and third parties. I'd recommend invesing in a more sophisticated charger than the 1/2 amp trickle charger included.

The engine starts so easily that it starts every time on the first pull, even when sitting for a few days.

The gas tank is rugged metal. The fill port does have a screen. I am not sure why some people feel the need to complain about having to fill it slowly because 1) it's nice to know theres not crud in the gas tank and 2) the screen is completely removable, so if you don't want it, take it out. I suspect that review was just looking for ways to demerit a fine quality machine.

The handles are rugged and the handle locking mechanism is nicely designed and well placed on top of the hinge.

The unit is quieter than I expected, but as loud as a lawn mower. Some fault the mufflers in such units in general, however these engines run at 3600 rpms, and with all that metal spinning around, are going to make a racket. To compare, pop the hood on your automobile and have someone race the engine in neutral while standing to the side. I dare say that the generator is quieter. For a truly quiet, long lasting unit, I'd look into a 4 pole water cooled diesel unit, but you'll also be paying for it. So far the unit has prooved to be easy to start, tollerably quiet, and easy on gas.

Sadly, the battery shipped dead and never held a charge, that is, from day one.

Starts easily with the pull cord some days, and on other days, it can take 10+ pulls with the choke at various settings.

Handles our house load pretty well. I see no issues with the power output other than that the UPS's think it generates dirty power.

Fairly mobile, I especially like the handles. The electrical panel is nicely arranged with good-fitting weather covers everywhere.

I would have rated this a solid four except for the battery, which I have found is also not covered by the warranty.

I love LG products and this charger is no exeption. Made by LG for my RUMOR it's perfect. It charges quickly and easily. Careful when pluggin it in and unplugging it in your cigarette lighter (I have hurt my knuckles twice trying to force it).

"When" I got it in the mail late I went to try it out. From what I said in the title it didn't work. Went to plug it in and the red light work fine to show that it was getting power, but when I went to plug it into the phone nothing happened. ooo and the card is really short. In normal service the Tundra has very good battery life. Where it fell short for me was using the AT&T Navigation GPS. I have the $20 Data Unlimited with Navigation plan, and using the talking waypoints program does use the battery quickly while traveling, so an in-car charger is necessary. AT&T wants $29 for their car charger, and it's not from Motorola. This SPN5401A charger is Motorola's P510 Fast-Rate charger the one they retail at $24.99 as of this writing. Eforcity sent me mine for under $10. This was a great savings on a Motorola product.

What you get with this product is a coiled cable that is two feet long without stretching the coils. Without excessive stretching, the cable is easily three feet long. The round end on the adaptor (looks a little like a magnifier, but isn't) has an etched surface of the center to create The "M" Motorola logo. When you plug the charger in, this clear "eyeglass" and logo area is lit in blue by a hidden LED. The length of the cigarette adaptor housing is 4 1/2", and it inserts easily and feels sturdy and firm in place. Since it is by Motorola, you can count on its quality and the protection it offers. Just remember to disconnect it when you aren't driving you don't want to discharge your vehicle battery. Like TV detective "Hunter" said "Works for me."

Finally found a charger that works with the Motorola Active! Charger arrived earlier than estimated arrival date also. Fast charger for on the go.

4/26/12: Genuine Motorola car cig-lighter charger for my old Motorola W370 cell phone.

Works perfectly. Top quality. It has a solid feel to it.

Has lots of nice features including (1) long coiled cable; (2) classy blue glowing circular lense with the 'M' logo etched in it; (3) large-ish easy-to-grip adapter plug.

PowerMax PM3-55 55 Amp 12V Power Supply

PowerMax PM3-55 55 Amp 12V Power SupplyI needed to upgrade the converter on my older motorhome. The 30-amp converter it had supplied unfiltered, unrgulated power to the various circuits, which is fine for incandescent bulbs, but not for powering electronics or modern LED lighting. The old converter also had a fairly ineffective 5-amp charger.

This PowerMax converter supplies clean well-regulated and filtered power to all circuits with an upgraded 55-amp capacity. It also functions as a "smart" multi-stage battery charger, delivering a bulk charging rate up to its full 55-amp rating. This is important for automatic faster charging from shore power or generator without having to resort to an external battery charger.

The PowerMax line of converter/chargers seem to offer features and performance equal to the other brands (Iota, Progressive Dynamics) at a significant price savings.

Installation is easy. If you are replacing a similar converter, it is as simple as disconnecting the DC leads from the old converter and attaching to the new one. Can't get much easier than that. If, however, you are upgrading a 6300 series Progressive Dynamics converter, it is just a little bit more difficult. It involves gutting the old converter and installing the new one in its place, along with a simple wiring modification. If you search the internet for "progressive 6300 converter upgrade" you will find step by step instructions, with photos. If you are handy, the job can be completed in an hour or so, and at significant savings compared to the "official" upgrade from Progressive, which costs about 2.5 times what this does. I found that I had to bend the mounting ears of the PowerMax to get it to fit inside the gutted chassis of the old converter, but it was very easy.

With just a little bit of work, my coach now has a modern converter with multi-stage charger for just a little over a hundred dollars. So far I am pleased with its performance. If I had to complain about something, it would be the fan, but all similar converters have such a fan. The fan on this unit only runs when needed rather than continuously as some do. In many installations it will be hardly noticeable. As a 6300 upgrade, it might be a bit more audible when running, because the converter vents into the living area, but that also provides for better cooling less risk of overheating and damaging the converter.

Overall the 55 amp PowerMax converter is a great value, and enabled me to upgrade to a 55-amp unit at a lower price than other brands' 30or 45-amp converters. This makes me very happy with my purchase.

This unit is well made, strong, and simple to use. I like that it works as both a battery charger and a power converter (to power 12v units independently, through household AC current). I have only used it for 3 weeks, so I can't rate it 5 stars yet. Very pleased.
