Virtual Reality Sound Labs Bluetooth Speaker Car Kit

Got this unit as a Christmas gift. Here are some pros & cons in the event you're thinking of purchasing it:

PROS:

IT WORKS!

It sounds GREAT!

It linked up with my Bluetooth phone quickly (I use a Samsung model)!

It's ESPECIALLY handy with voice recognition Bluetooth devices. (I just tell it to call a name in my cellphone directory, and it does the rest!)

The price is reasonable for what this does.

It's one of the few devices of this type that has a big display area for the phone number, HOWEVER...(see CONS below)...

It's easy to operate!

It seems to hold a full charge for a long time period (at least a week so far for me).

CONS:

It only comes with a 30 day warranty!

It needs to be charged for 2-4 hours when the battery drains. The problem is, the ONLY way they suggest you charge it is through your vehicle's cigarette lighter. (No adapter to charge it in our home.) And they suggest NOT charging it when you aren't in your vehicle. I don't know about you, but I seldom drive around town for 2-4 hours. (FYI, I just left it plugged in while I was at home and all worked well.)

The "log" area is supposed to keep track of calls in and out by way of logging them with a 0-5 first digit in front of them so you know which calls were most recent. The unit I have puts no such digit in front of the number. And there are some mysterious numbers in the log I have no idea who they belong to which DO have a #1 in front of all of them. (There are no 0, 2, 3, 4, or 5 numbered calls to be found! All the "mystery" numbers have a "1" in front of them.)

While this unit DOES have a large display area for the number, it's hard to see in bright light.

Hope these PROS/CONS help you to decide if you want to purchase it. Would I buy it again? Yes, I think I would. Mainly because I believe the pros outweigh the cons...especially the fact that it really DOES work for hands-free calling. After all, isn't that why you're REALLY thinking about buying something like this?

This item was purchased for my son for father's day. He is a person who loves to use his cell phone while driving. My son contacted me upon installation of this item. I was surprised at the clarity in sound. I asked to call him back to see if the clarity would be fine whether receiving or sending a call, it was I am impressed.

I purchased one of these today at CostCo and tried it out on my way home. It linked up to my Sony Ericson easily but the sound quality was poor. I called my wife who said the sound was not clear but rather muffled sounding. I had the unit mounted on my sun visor about 8" from my face. It also sounded muffled to me over the speaker. We have a Prius which is a quiet car, I was driving 60mph on the freeway. The sound volume was sufficient.

I'm going to return it. Too bad because the idea is great. I actually refrained from purchasing it on the spot yesterday. I came home and read the comments here on Amazon.com, my source of user comments. The comments were largely supportive so I went back today to buy it.

You may want to try it yourself. Who knows I may have purchased a poorly working example.

After using some of the "fancier" ones, and having them bit the dust, I tried this more simple one. By more simple, it has no "pass throughs" for other components, flashlights, etc. And as a result, it only has two contact prongs, like the OEM home charger. It has worked fine so far, knock on wood! On the others, I always had to jiggle the plug around until it would make proper contact.

I bought this product about a year ago. i travel alot an like to use the cell as back up for when I do not have time to sit and wait in a airport. (can recharge on the plane) For my phone and mp3 player it has worked great. It will recharge my razor 2.5 times before being drained.

I noticed it seemed to take a long time until I talked with an engineer friend of mine who told me that most glass, especially glad in cars, is designed now to reduce the full impact of the sun in various ways. It takes about 8 hours of direct sunlight to fully charge. If its overcast

and/or not pointed towards sun it will take longer. Best to not do it through

a window. Its just common sense.

It comes with the adapter to connect to the ipod. You just plug the solio to

the adapter which leaves you with an USB connector free to hook to the

ipod or iphones cable that came with that device. A lot of people just don't get the connections. Then just push the on/off button and your charging from the solio's internal battery. If you have almost any cellphone adapters can be easily ordered for around $10.

This is a compact, light weight unit designed to recharge our standard hand held electronic devices we lug around with us. I use mine for my cell phone, iPod and kindle. It came with several tips to adapt to different phones, but my Motorola just uses a mini-USB. I had to buy a micro-USB for my kindle and I opted for the iPod cable. If the Solio is fully charged, it will pretty much fully charge any of these units. A full charge will take pretty much all of the capicity of the Solio, so don't even think about fully charging more than one device in a day.

My sister carried one of these around Europe so her kids could use their hand help video games during down time. As various countries have different voltages and different plug configurations, this became a handy tool.

I wanted to give the Solio 5 stars, my only complaint is that it takes MANY, many hours to fully recharge this little guy. You need full and direct sunlight to make it happen. In the desert your gold. If you have this tied to your backpack and you are in a shaded forest for most of the day, don't expect much of a charge.

Admittedly, when I purchased this car charger, I was not necessarily solely focused on buying a car charger at the time. I was actually in the market to buy an extended lithium-ion battery for my LG VX-8300, and I soon found myself browsing the accessories that were being recommended to me.

Anyhow, to try and make this already somewhat long review short, I played around with the car charger and the phone for a few minutes more and finally managed to get them connected. The next morning, I hooked it all up to the 12v outlet in my car and confirmed that the car charger worked as advertised.

In short, most definitely a cheap ($$-wise) performer.

I give this product 1 star for being so cheap, that I it is not a terrible loss. It worked for only two days. The connector is made of plastic that's so soft and poor that it disintegrated after just few uses, rendering the charger useless. I can not recommend this product. However I did recently buy similarly cheap charger from the same retailer for my iPod (for 6 cents), and it works great.

Line of sight with no obstructions would probably be better. We love them and have two sets so the kids can keep in touch too. Upgrade to better batterys for more talk time. I purchased this product (Cobra Electronics Walkie-Talkie CXT235 Two-Way Radio) during an Amazon Lightning Deal. Previously I already have a pair of very basic walkie talkies (Motorola FV300 2-Way Radio), but I consider the CXT235 a 'step-up' due to its advertised features, namely:

Longer range of 'Up to 20 miles'

'Privacy Codes'

Rechargeable batteries and charger included

My initial impression of the CXT235 was quite positive. The control buttons are fairly simple to use. The LCD panel is back-lighted and easy to read. The 'Privacy Code' feature seems to work well. However, there are several marketing hypes and deficiencies that I need to point out:

1. Like all walkie talkies, the advertised range of 'Up to 20 miles' is highly inflated. This number is only possible under optimal test conditions (transmitting from one hilltop to another with clear line-of-sight, perfect weather, no RF interference, etc). In an urban environment with obtrusions and interferences, you're lucky to get up to 2 miles in range.

2. The so-called 'Privacy Code' does NOT prevent others from listening in to your conversation. Instead, it prevents you from receiving unwanted transmission from other people. Let's say your group is using channel 11 with privacy code set to 22. You will not hear any transmission on channel 11 unless it is preceded by the correct privacy code. But anybody listening in to channel 11 without using privacy code can hear everything you transmit.

3. The included NiMH rechargeable AAA batteries have very low capacity of just 300mAh. Based on my measured power consumption (see Footnotes), this is barely enough to sustain 1-2 hours of operation if you do a lot of transmission. To extend the runtime, I need to replace those batteries with higher-capacity versions, such as Sanyo eneloop or Tenergy Centura (800mAh).

4. While the walkie talkies are plugged in to the AC recharger, you can turn them on but they are unable to receive any calls. That means you cannot leave them in standby mode while being recharged.

Bottom Line:

Despite the above limitations, I consider the Cobra CXT235 a good value at the Lightning Deal price I paid. An added bonus for me is that this product can be used to communicate with my old Motorola FV300 as long as all walkie talkies are set to the same channel, and privacy code is NOT set on the CXT235.

[Footnotes on Power Consumption]

When first turned on, the unit consumes around 60mA in standby mode.

After 10 seconds of inactivity, it goes into 'Power Saver' mode which reduces the average input current to around 20mA

While receiving calls, the units consumes around 100mA (depending on volume)

While transmitting in low power (channel 8-14), it consumes ~250mA

While transmitting in high power (Channel 1-7, 15-22), it consumes ~300mA

The AC adapter's charging current is around 30mA. That means it takes about 12 hours to recharge the included 3000mAh batteries, or 30 hours if I use higher-capacity batteries.

My 11-year old daughter bought a cheap set of walkie-talkies at Claire's and was very disappointed. So she returned them and saved up her money to buy these. She has had so much fun running around with her friends at our neighborhood park and playing spy games. They have excellent reception and she has enjoyed them very much.

Emgo Handlebar-Mount Cigarette Lighter 86-44410

I had to fabricate my own mounting clamp for this for 2 reasons.

1. clamp that came with the unit was too small for my 09 Honda VTX 1300R.

2. the holder itself looked weak due to plastic construction, VTX 1300 vibrates a lot.

3. it's larger(the lighter/socket assembly) than the photo shows and I needed the extra length to the holder for clearance.

The weatherproof cap is not too snug so, it may be better to leave the lighter in place. At least it'll keep the rain/water from going into the socket.

The wires that's supplied is way too short for handlebar mount, unless you want to splice into your existing system, like headlight, that comes on when the ignition is turned on...hey, when the lighter is not used, it won't draw any current any way so why cut into the wiring? Just get some extra wires and connectors and go direct to the battery positive terminal. You can put the ground(black wire) anywhere metallic.

For whatever accessories you plan to use this, make sure you have the right fuse installed for universal use. My rule of thumb is 150% of max amp the device uses. example: If device draws 1 amp max, I'll put in a 1.5 amp fuse. You might want to have some extra sizes handy for various devices, if possible. A 1 amp device with 10 amp fuse installed to be used for the most powerful device you got is NOT a good idea!

The first thing that caught my attention, was the very-well written instructions. The assembly is very rugged and except for the exposed back-end should weather storms. With this being advertised to be handlebar mounted, it got me questioning why the manufacturer would leave the electrical wiring unprotected instead of somehow putting the connections inside somekind of screw-on sleeving. They do try to cover their tracks with a weak disclaimer in the instructions--something to the effect of "mount this in weather-proof area", but come-on, this is suppose to be mounted on motorcycle bars! Anyways, I slapped on a thick layer of liquid electrical tape around the entire back end and PRESTO the perfect 12V power socket.

Works like it should. Put on my 7/8 bars a year ago and still holds fine. Powers my gps and air compressor. The actual lighter is cheaply made and broke after 3-4 weeks. Bought another lighter and no problems since. It is one of the few made that can actually be used as a cigarette lighter due to the metal inside rather than the plastic many other outlets are made of. Overall, I have no regrets.

There are better more pricey units out there but for the price, it does what is advertised with one weakness--couldn't mount to handlebar due to clamp size and wiring length. Instead, mounted it on right passenger floorboard bracket which is within easy reach for wires to battery and charger for cell extending from right jacket pocket straight down to it. As for the exposed electrical wiring and fitting at bottom, black automotive vacuum tubing (available in varying diameters--split the side if you have to for fuse fitting) works great for covering wiring and hot glue for sealing it to exposed fitting connection. One caution: make sure when mounting, the cap hinge is positioned to the front of the unit/bike so if the cap comes loose at 60 with a 30 mph head wind it won't snap off like my first one did when mounted at the rear of unit. When I know in advance I'll be riding in rain, I add a wrap of electrical tape to the cap bottom for added sealing. Wouldn't recommend leaving lighter plugged in while riding or bypassing/excluding the fuse. Haven't had a problem with quality of the plastic clamp in 4 years of use of first one purchased. Never broke, always snug. Oh yes, bike mounted on: Rigid-mount '86 Heritage Softtail (lots of vibration). No problem recommending for purchase. Shipping was as advertised. Received within 4 days in original new packaging.

Love the charger. Very compact to fit into the glovebox! Only complaint is that it does not extend as far as I would like. The cord coils are quite shorts and this becomes problematic, but not in my car since the cig. lighter is close. Overall, does the job!

Most of the features of this unit are thoughtful and work well. When the face is closed, you have access to all the unit controls. Additionally, the front face swings open to present an iPod dock and a second set of controls that handle most of the unit's functions. The iPod dock is nice and sturdy; my iPod Classic fits in it better than it does inside a Bose Sounddock. It has an aux input and programmable subwoofer/rear output, as well as a spare preamp output.

The EQ settings are not as detailed as I would like, but they aren't bad. There's bass and treble settings, no mid. There is also no built-in crossover, which I would prefer to see in any head unit with a dedicated subwoofer out, but again, for the price, this is to be expected.

The big fault, however, is in the programming.

One of the nice touches on this device is that you can set the EQ separately for each input radio, aux, iPod, or bluetooth. However, unless an iPod is set in the dock, the iPod mode does not appear in the audio settings menu, so you can't adjust the EQ for it that way. And the kicker? When an iPod IS docked, there is no way to access the audio settings menu; the only button for that is on the front panel, which does not function when the faceplate is open to allow an iPod to dock. Effectively, it is impossible to adjust the EQ for the iPod, with the factory radio.

I've figured out one workaround; if you purchase a dock-extender cable, you can plug in an iPod, and then close the front panel. Alternatively, you can set your iPod into the dock, then plug the aux cable into it and basically use it in aux mode you'll have the ability to change the EQ, and your iPod will stay charged, however you won't be able to use the remote to control the iPod.

EDIT Added 2/20/11: As many commenters have now pointed out, you can adjust the EQ using the remote control when the iPod is docked. Press the Audio Settings button on the remote to cycle through each EQ setting, and use the volume buttons to adjust that setting up and down. I still consider this a crappy solution to a problem that should have been caught in testing, but I also consider it way too minor for me to buy a different head unit. I still like this one quite a lot, more than a year after first installing it.

a really great product. it fit perfectly in the slot converter i had to buy. really easy to install. you have to know how to splice wires and crimp or tape them together though. overall its a great radio. i hardly use it closed. it makes some squealing noises with my iphone. i'm not sure if thats just because of the iphone itself. when i have music playing, i cant hear it though. i hardly use the remote, but its a good accessory to have. Dual is supposed to release an iphone/ ipod touch app soon to work with it even better. i wish the bluetooth module came with it but for the low price of the radio, it wasn't that big of a deal to order the 50 dollar module separately. i suggest this radio to anybody with an ipod, it really works out well.

another problem with the iphone is that with the bluetooth connected to it it defaults to the a2dp streaming when it connects so you either have to wait for it to connect before you put the iphone in the dock, or switch the audio back to the dock when it connects. not that big of a deal.

I really like having my iPod hooked up to my vehicle stereo.

The flip down faceplate of the head unit requires that the iPod sit leaning back at an angle, so other parts of your dash may need to be modified, or you may have to do a custom install. I was able to modify the install kit (sold separately) so that the stereo will pull out like a drawer to provide the needed upper clearance in my '98 full size Chevy pick-up truck.

I think this is a great bargain for the price, and was exactly what I was looking for. A lot of really cool features.

THE GOOD: Seems to work great, and as described. I'm using it with my iPod 3, in a '98 full size Chevy pick-up.

THE BAD: May not work easily with all vehicle interiors.

THE IFS: Now I want an amp and sub-woofer to really enjoy the sound in my truck!

Was looking into getting a new car stereo for my wifes van, 1993 Aerostar. Been shopping around.

She wanted one with an Ipod dock. Found this here on Amazon. Noticed that Walmart also sells

same one for a few cents more then Amazon. Walmart had it on Clearance for $50.00 new.

Bought it.

Stereo was very simple and use of a wiring harness made it that much simpler.

Sound is great out of the factory 17 year old speakers. Very simple controls.

Ipod dock couldn't be easier. Just slip in and it goes to playing. Full

controls of Ipod from the stereo. Sound is great.

Remote is small. Buttons hard to read. Not to be used when driving. More

for your rear passengers to use when they connect their Ipod or other MP3

device to it.

Would recommond this to anyone. Thinking about getting one for my truck.

NO CD PLAYER. BUT, with an Ipod you really don't need one.

I bought this to replace my stock stereo in my 2004 Rav4. I was using just a tape converter to listen to my ipod (horrible sound quality), since i never buy cds any more i thought this stereo was a cool idea. I was worried about the ipod falling off around turns but it is held pretty steady. Also the sound sound quality is leaps and bounds better. It sounds clearer than fm transmitter, aux cable, and the tape/aux converter.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who uses their ipod as the only music source like me.

My only complaint so far is that you can't use the stereo's equalizer settings when the ipod is plugged in because the screen and controls are down. I sometimes feel like pumping the bass when a rap song comes on the ipod but i can't :(

The pack comes with the cable connector and is ready to install. I'm a long-time computer serviceman and have replaced a lot of UPS batteries and I must say these are at the top of my list.

The battery arrived very well protected in 3 business days from Chrome battery. The wiring and connector on the battery appear to be of a quality equal to the wiring and connector on the UPS side. The 2 batteries (RBC7 is 24 volts requiring 2, 12 volt batteries in series) seem to be held together very securely with foam tape. I can't compare the Chrome battery to the original because I bought the UPS used without a battery.

I have not yet tested the capacity and don't know if I will. It arrived at a 40% (2 out of 5 lights) charge and took a few hours to reach 100% (5 out of 5 lights). I expect the battery would've charged pretty quickly if it didn't have a decent capacity.

Hopefully I'll remember to post an update after a year or 2 regarding longevity.

I bought this item about a month earlier, and straight out of the box I couldn't fit a USB into the USB slot. It was off center of the hole so I got some pliers and managed to pull it down enough to where the USB would plug into it but it wouldn't charge. I thought maybe since the USB was off center it may have had something to do with it so I gladly returned it to Amazon free of charge and bought another one. Straight out of the box the USB does not work, AGAIN. This one the USB actually went right into the slot though. As far as I know the cigarette sockets work but what's the point of including a USB slot on it if it's unusable? Another slight complaint is that the unit itself has scratches and scuffs on it almost appearing to be used instead of new.

Because we have older cars but wanted multiple 12 volt powered devices plugged in to the cigarette lighter for trips...I tried this. I do hate having wires and the thing sitting on the car floor....but having an easy way to plug in the GPS and Radar for trips is worth it. I just leave it on the garage counter until we are ready to travel...and then plug it all in. If I wasn't so cheap I would just buy a new car.... but this works great.

Ultra bright LED indicator does not exist.

DC jacks are too short for some common plugs... they plug in, but pop right out.

USB port was not aligned properly and doesn't seem to work at all, though I suspect the welds on the board were probably damaged by the angling and pushing required to get a usb cord plugged in... so it might have worked if it had been assembled/designed correctly.

I am glad I read the review from Eric. I purchased this to install in the cap in the back of my truck. After reading the review, I decided I better check mine before installing it. I connected an iPod to the USB port, and it did not work. The two other outlets do work. I tried the USB port on my GPS and it worked. I tried another iPod and cable, and it did not work. It seems to work on some and not others. There is no ultra bright LED light as description claims. There is no way to mount or install this unit, so I planned on using stick on velcro to mount it to the carpet in the cap.
