Vot® 750W Power Inverter

Vot® 750W Power InverterThe beauty of this inverter is that it powers 2 to 3 electronic items at once and attaches to a car battery without using a car lighter. I have owned mine for 9 months to a year, loved it, and bought another. I use it for emergency power in my car, and for temporary power outages in the house (we have them every 3 weeks or so). I use a spare car battery to power it. This inverter can power a laptop or computer and monitor, or the tv and satellite power (and a lamp). It has two outlets and a usb to plug into.

Compared to an inverter that plugs into your cigarette lighter 150 watts or 400 watts, there is 750 watts of power available with this power inverter. If the car battery powering this inverter is low on juice, a fault light comes on and you need to recharge the battery. However this could be hard wired into your vehicle and placed under the drivers seat, then you would never run out of energy while using it.

This inverter is not designed to power a standard microwave or refrigerator. It might power a 600 watt microwave or small refrigerator, but I would not trust it. It is for the cost conscious that needs emergency electricity for a light, fan and tv or computer on for short amounts of time maybe 4 hours or so. Or for multiple small electronics being powered driving down the road.

Kawasaki 840662 14.4 Volt Replacement Battery, Black

Kawasaki 840662 14.4 Volt Replacement Battery, BlackI ordered this battery pack as a replacement to a 5 piece combination tool kit which I have had for years. I Recently shattered one of the original battery packs and my research showed that the dimensions of this Kawasaki were the same as my set. Upon arrival all the dimensions were identical accept there was no quick charge recepticle tab on the top front of the upright stem. I set it into my original charger and after 48 hours the battery would run a flashlight, but not a drill or skil saw. I then disassembled the stem and soldered a quick charge tab at the top front of the stem and then it only took 2 hours to recover the amperage needed to drive my heavier usage power tools. So it is now working satisfactorily and I will reorder in the future the same product as needed because I cannot find a source for my originals!

Waterproof PWM LS2024RP Solar Panel Charge Controller Regulator 12/24V 20A

Waterproof PWM LS2024RP Solar Panel Charge Controller Regulator 12/24V 20AI originally got this to be used with a portable 200 Watt system using 2=100 Watt 12V panels. It is water resistant, but water could get into the unit around the wire entry points.

Here are a few problems I have with it. It starts the charge cycle every day trying to "equalize" my RV batteries (2=6V series Trojan T105RE @12V) the voltage it tries to maintain for about 2 hours regardless of the charge state of my batteries is 14.8V. Then it drops to 14.4-6V for 30min or so. Then it "floats" at 13.8V. The main problem is that the "boost" and/or "equalize" is often too short, or too long. This cycle is "dumb" and only on a timer, but it doesn't seem to care if your batteries need more charge or not, and won't provide more if they do, nor less if they don't. The indicator light on this controller might show a "full charge" but the controller continues to charge too much sometimes, but most often not enough, leaving the batteries under charged and requiring me to use another charger to actually bring them up to full charge, using a hydrometer as a charge indicator to actually determine the charge state.

The float voltage would be too high from this controller for my batteries which should be 13.2V, and the equalize voltage would be too low from this controller, I need 15.2+V and using this controller I noticed 1 cell in my batteries was already developing a drop in voltage after using this controller 2 months or less. (not equalized, but my other charger seemed to remedy this)

I did not use the light timer feature for load control (I was interested mostly in the "waterproof" part), so I can't comment on this feature.

So for intermittent emergency use it might be okay, and it might work okay if you have better math than I do and can perfectly match your panels/batteries/load to only require 2-3 hours of full charge, such as a driveway light system or something... but its not very good for variable loads and uses such as an RV.

I didn't get enough rain to really test the waterproof part, but I did use it outside hooked to the back of my panels which I moved around the yard chasing the sun. The wires on this unit appear close to 10 gauge but may be 12, it is China built, but comes with instructions easy enough to understand in super tiny print I need a magnifying glass to read.

I will be replacing this unit with something else that is "smarter" so I don't have to be. :)

It holds my 29 series size deep cycle battery nicely. The gauge in the lid if just a guess on the batteries status but works ok. I love the strap to hold down the lid. Easy off easy on and easy to cinch it on tight :-)

Tripp Lite APS3636VR 3600W 36V DC to AC Inverter with Automatic Line-to-Battery 30-Amp Charger

Tripp Lite APS3636VR 3600W 36V DC to AC Inverter with Automatic Line-to-Battery 30-Amp ChargerI installed 2 of this beautiful machines on my home and i'm very satisfied in power outage may works for more than 24 hours if i use only lights, surely you need more batteries for make it work for that amount of time i have 9 batteries of 80 amps for each inverter and works smoothly, i highly recommend this product since it protect all things of low voltage andd over voltage, i have mines since 2 years and never fails, only bad thing is that some appliance articles like satellite receivers, motion detection lamps and some desktop pc sometimes turns off because the 20ms transfer time is not enough for this devices, but 98% of my devices connected works like a charm. and the remote control let you see how the battery is draining, usually i see my lcd tv for 3 hours before battery gets the 70% of 100%, and the tv is connected with satellite receiver, dvd, sound system, and lights of home, so i think this is a very useful inverter for any appliances on home.even i'm able to use microwave oven since it supports 3,600 watts continous, so it mean 6 KVA. hardwire is relly required for batteries specially.

I used it to create back-up for my basement sump pumps (3 pumps with 30Amps total power). Connected with 3 110 Ah Farm and fleet deep cycle batteries. Works perfectly and able to handle full load for significant amount of time. Consider connecting basement freezers and refrigerators to it as well and probably servers. Why to pay for useless 12 V backup pumps (they handle max 2000gal/h each), when you can connect your regular pumps through this charger/converter.

12V 7.2AH Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) Battery for APC ES500 ES550 LS500 RBC110 RBC2

12V 7.2AH Sealed Lead Acid Battery for APC ES500 ES550 LS500 RBC110 RBC2APC has more than one type of unit that is labeled 'ES500'. This fits ES500 units that have the model number on the bottom 'BE500C'.

This does not fit ES500 units that have the model number 'BE500'! You need this type instead: Replacement Battery Cartridge for RBC46

Check the bottom of your unit to see which you have before you order.

This battery came quickly, looks like it was refurbished, but that's fine with me. Fits my BE500C unit (but not my BE500 unit) and is working fine. I took one star off because of the vague description.

I got a new un-interrupted power supply at work when my old one began to randomly beep. I was instructed to throw the old one away. I did some research on APC's website, however, and found that the battery on my old UPS had done all it came to do. I priced new OEM batteries and quickly realized they weren't worth the price to salavge this old surge protector, but when I found this one on Amazon, I decided to invest in the battery to have a like-new UPS in my home office. Great way to re-use something that was destined for the landfill!

Emgo Handlebar-Mount Cigarette Lighter 86-44410

Emgo Handlebar-Mount Cigarette Lighter 86-44410I had to fabricate my own mounting clamp for this for 2 reasons.

1. clamp that came with the unit was too small for my 09 Honda VTX 1300R.

2. the holder itself looked weak due to plastic construction, VTX 1300 vibrates a lot.

3. it's larger(the lighter/socket assembly) than the photo shows and I needed the extra length to the holder for clearance.

The weatherproof cap is not too snug so, it may be better to leave the lighter in place. At least it'll keep the rain/water from going into the socket.

The wires that's supplied is way too short for handlebar mount, unless you want to splice into your existing system, like headlight, that comes on when the ignition is turned on...hey, when the lighter is not used, it won't draw any current any way so why cut into the wiring? Just get some extra wires and connectors and go direct to the battery positive terminal. You can put the ground(black wire) anywhere metallic.

For whatever accessories you plan to use this, make sure you have the right fuse installed for universal use. My rule of thumb is 150% of max amp the device uses. example: If device draws 1 amp max, I'll put in a 1.5 amp fuse. You might want to have some extra sizes handy for various devices, if possible. A 1 amp device with 10 amp fuse installed to be used for the most powerful device you got is NOT a good idea!

The first thing that caught my attention, was the very-well written instructions. The assembly is very rugged and except for the exposed back-end should weather storms. With this being advertised to be handlebar mounted, it got me questioning why the manufacturer would leave the electrical wiring unprotected instead of somehow putting the connections inside somekind of screw-on sleeving. They do try to cover their tracks with a weak disclaimer in the instructions--something to the effect of "mount this in weather-proof area", but come-on, this is suppose to be mounted on motorcycle bars! Anyways, I slapped on a thick layer of liquid electrical tape around the entire back end and PRESTO the perfect 12V power socket.

Buy Emgo Handlebar-Mount Cigarette Lighter 86-44410 Now

Works like it should. Put on my 7/8 bars a year ago and still holds fine. Powers my gps and air compressor. The actual lighter is cheaply made and broke after 3-4 weeks. Bought another lighter and no problems since. It is one of the few made that can actually be used as a cigarette lighter due to the metal inside rather than the plastic many other outlets are made of. Overall, I have no regrets.

Read Best Reviews of Emgo Handlebar-Mount Cigarette Lighter 86-44410 Here

There are better more pricey units out there but for the price, it does what is advertised with one weakness--couldn't mount to handlebar due to clamp size and wiring length. Instead, mounted it on right passenger floorboard bracket which is within easy reach for wires to battery and charger for cell extending from right jacket pocket straight down to it. As for the exposed electrical wiring and fitting at bottom, black automotive vacuum tubing (available in varying diameters--split the side if you have to for fuse fitting) works great for covering wiring and hot glue for sealing it to exposed fitting connection. One caution: make sure when mounting, the cap hinge is positioned to the front of the unit/bike so if the cap comes loose at 60 with a 30 mph head wind it won't snap off like my first one did when mounted at the rear of unit. When I know in advance I'll be riding in rain, I add a wrap of electrical tape to the cap bottom for added sealing. Wouldn't recommend leaving lighter plugged in while riding or bypassing/excluding the fuse. Haven't had a problem with quality of the plastic clamp in 4 years of use of first one purchased. Never broke, always snug. Oh yes, bike mounted on: Rigid-mount '86 Heritage Softtail (lots of vibration). No problem recommending for purchase. Shipping was as advertised. Received within 4 days in original new packaging.

Snap-on 92179 8-LED Crank Emergency Flashlight with AM, FM, Weather Band and NOAA

Snap-on 92179 8-LED Crank Emergency Flashlight with AM, FM, Weather Band and NOAAall things considered this flashlight is well worth it..far less cost at amazon than retail..the charge lasts..the light is bright enough..all radios work well..i would definitely recommend it as an emergency and even everyday use.

The red Snap-On crank LED flashlight is roughly twice the size of a conventional cylindrical flashlight of the same proportions. It feels solid, nothing jiggles, the crank feels tight and solid. The LEDs are, as usual, slightly wimpy. It doesn't produce a bright beam of light. In a total blackout, it will do its job. The radio works fine. I chose this item because of the Snap-On name. I expect it to last quite a while. We'll see.

Buy Snap-on 92179 8-LED Crank Emergency Flashlight with AM, FM, Weather Band and NOAA Now

Was expecting something about half the size, so needless to say I was surprised when I opened the box. Bought this because of the flashlight, weather radio and the 12 Volt charger with the security of knowing I won't need to look up batteries in case of an emergency. Plastic with rubber ends, if it didn't have the Snap-On logo I would have been leery about purchasing it. Siren is uselessbut that wasn't on my list of must have functions. 4 stars, would have been 5 if they could have put it in a more normal flashlight sized package.

Works as it should; seems sturdy enough, the NOAA is a waste as space on it because, it's not available everywhere, no real complaints, flashlight works good, radio works good and last I have not tried to charge anything as of yet but it's worth the $34.

Schumacher MC-1 Manual Battery Charger

Schumacher MC-1 Manual Battery ChargerI bought this item because, at the time, it was advertised as shutting down when the charge was full. I see that this error has now been corrected on Amazon's web page. I wanted to use it to keep the battery on my tractor from discharging and freezing while the tractor was in the barn over the winter. However when I received it, the manual stated that it must be disconnected after full charge is done. If you can live with that, it should be fine. I never actually tried using it, as it didn't meet my requirements. Congrat's to Amazon for correcting the description.

-dan z-

This is a pretty simple trickle charger. It doesn't provide much feedback, other than when it is on and when it is off. I don't think there should be any worry of overcharging, as it was designed to provide a constant "trickle" of power to keep a battery at top charge. I have owned and used this unit for the past year without any problems. If you want more feedback, buy a unit with gauges. If you are just looking to keep your bike (or lawnmower) starting on demand and want to save a few bucks, this unit is very good.

Buy Schumacher MC-1 Manual Battery Charger Now

A great product, it works well, is very compact to take with me in my motorcycle, and very reasonably priced.

This is definitely a trickle charger. I had it hooked up to a completely dead battery for 2 days, and my Mazdaspeed6 started right up! Impressed with the device since it is a LOT cheaper than alternatives. Don't purchase if you have a vehicle that you need to run within a day.

Want Schumacher MC-1 Manual Battery Charger Discount?

I had a minor snafu (my fault) with it being shipped to the wrong address, but Amazon was amazing about helping me get it resolved and had it out to me just one day after the expected delivery date. So as far rapport goes, top notch.

As for the device itself...it's really, really basic, but it gets the job done. The clamps are smaller than those on your standard jumper cables, which is a boon in my case, because I couldn't fit normal sized cables into the tight area where my terminals are located. It charged faster than I expected and it kept my poor dying battery alive about a month until I could afford a replacement, so it was definitely worth the money in my book. Plus, it's small enough to carry under my seat if I plan to travel long distances and want it there just in case.

Unfortunately, I had to use a heavy duty extension cable with it because I have no exterior outlets, but if you can park even relatively close the cable is plenty long and sturdy to stretch across a car width or so.

Schumacher IP-125 Instant Power Jump Starter With 12 Amp Hour Battery

Schumacher IP-125 Instant Power Jump Starter With 12 Amp Hour BatteryI like the compact and lightweight features of this unit. It has enough power to start a car with very low charge. However, it only has enough juice for 1 or 2 attempts of starting the vehicle. Maybe I have to recharge the unit a few more times to get peak performance.

One gripe is that there is no cord to an outlet. You have to provide an extension cord to charge the unit. Make sure it's a heavy gauge cord too.

Extremely compact and well "branded."

The clamp handles touch one another, making their release awkward. (This can be overcome by clipping one higher than the other on the case.)

Two problems with the plug prongs. A larger cutout on the case end would permit the use of a wider range of extension cords. (The earlier comment about a computer power cord is excellent.) The prongs are slightly loose and move inward, so that the connection with the cord is marginal.

I have used this for five months now. I love this little battery. It hold a lot of power and starts my car easily when the battery is run down. The price was great and it is easy to recharge. I took the advise of another reviewer and us a computer cord to recharge. That is the only thing I wish were different. I wish it had its own power cord.

Want Schumacher IP-125 Instant Power Jump Starter With 12 Amp Hour Battery Discount?

I purchased a previous version of this (back then the product name was the "Mighty-Mite") although the color (mine is more towards black) and the graphics have changed. I don't believe the product itself has changed much, with the buttons and lights in exactly the same place.

Despite the size, it has worked great over the years. I purchased two back in 2006 and they still work well.

I'm not docking off a star, but there are little things that have to be understood for this product to be more useful. Sometimes the automatic charging system doesn't stop, although the charging current is probably so small that there's little risk of damaging the internal battery. I've found that disconnecting then reconnecting showed a green "charged" indicator in those cases. Since the current draw is pretty small, you can safely use something like a simple household extension cord. Since the plug is recessed, the way I've dealt with it was to use a 2 to 3 prong adapter, which serves as an extension of the plug. The other alternative is to get something like an outdoor electrical cord with an end that will fit in the recessed area. I rather prefer this to the ones with wall-wart adapters, since I can easily obtain replacement extension cords and 2/3 prong adapters on the road and can keep different sets in the house and car. I don't particularly like storing wall-warts in the car, especially given how delicate the thin cable is.

It doesn't come with a male-male cord to recharge off of the 12 V accessory port. You can also use those to maintain the power in a car (like electric presets) when you're changing a car battery. Amazon has it, although Schumacher also sells it directly.

They are more like floor pans, not floor mats. They cover almost all carpet that can come in contact with your feet. The are custom fitted to perfectly fit the floor of your car. If you're in the market for winter mats I HIGHLY recommend these. I will be keeping them in all year except for the summer months. In SPring I will just put my factory floor mats inside of them. 2.5-inch Full HD 1080p Dashboard Car Camera DVR Blackbox F900LH

2.5-inch Full HD 1080p Dashboard Car Camera DVR Blackbox F900LH
  • 2.5" TFT LCD Display
  • Records in Native 1920*1080 Progressive (1080P), Supports recording in 1920*1080@25fps, 1440@1080@30fps, 1280*720@30fps, 640*480@30fps
  • 180 Degree swivel lens, 130 Degree Field-of-View
  • Supports up to 32GB SD card (not included), HDMI Port, MiniUSB Port
  • Loop recording

The only thing this camera does; is produce good quality videos. The instruction manual was lost in translation and is more of a set-up guide then a owners manual. There was no detail instructions of the features on the settings. But with some hit and miss' you can figure it out.

Pros:

Takes good quality videos. It uses about 1.7 GB memory for a 10 minute loop.

Loop recording works; allowing you different loop time options and overwriting older videos when the card becomes full

The suction cup window mounts is very secure and allows for several adjustments; allowing you in conjunction with the monitor able to rotate 270 degrees, and the lens rotating 180 degrees; multiple options in mounting your camera to the windshield.

The camera does stops recording when you turn off the car; and turns on and starts recording when you start the car.

Cons:

The motion sensor does not work. One time it worked; another time it recorded one minute loops; and while going 60 MPH it would stop recording and the the camera would shut off.

Auto shut-off does not work. I have the auto shut-off set for five minutes; but every time when I shut off the car; the camera records for thirty seconds and then shuts off.

Tripod is useless.

Had trouble inserting the memory card. Had to use a pen to install and latch the card in place.

I tried updating my Garmin Nuvi with the USB cable that came with camera. The Garmin had a fit (threw the cable away).

The HDMI did not work. I use the cable that was supplied and my own. The Sony Bravia showed that is was hooked up to the camera but no video or audio played on the TV.

Has digital zoom instead of a optical zoom.

Has a one year warranty; but did not include any warranty information.

Can use as a PC camera; I don't think so. No matter what I did I could not get out of mass storage mode when the camera is connected to the computer with a USB cable.

I have included three driving situations in the video. First part is driving on a sunny day with some shadows. The next part is driving at night, driving into a small town. The third part is driving about thirty minutes before sunrise. This was recorded in 1080P onto a class 10 SDHC 32 GB card.

Buy 2.5-inch Full HD 1080p Dashboard Car Camera DVR Blackbox F900LH Now

The user manual doesn't make sense, written in poor english and with poorly drawn (and labeled) images. There is no indication of the amount of recording time (based on memory card size) or a complete list of options selectable from the menu items. The material is cheaply made.

The camera DOES however produce clear images (moving and still) and through testing I found the avi fies are limited to ten minutes each, when run overnight it will fill up the disk (memory module) and delete the older material in order to write new data (the main purpose) but that limited a 32gbyte module to two hours of actual avi files.

There is a socket to attach a tripod to (like normal cameras) but a strap holder prevents its use, two tripods that work for other cameras were unable to attach to the screw socket.

Battery life is extremely poor, after charging overnight it could not run more that 30 minutes on a full charge. An external power source will be required for anything over 20 minutes (car charger was supplied)

Excellent little Camera. The Picture is really great! The motion detection also works great. The battery was a big surprise, it last really a long time for such a small battery. It last about 2 hours or more. You have to charge the battery three times, and completely exhaust it three times to get the full benefit. I can tell you this is a great

little camera. Well worth the money. THANK YOU AMAZON!!!!!!!

I've used other inverters that claim to provide 150 Watts or 175 Watts, but their claims are bogus (explained below). And to find an inverter that offers this much payload at this low price is sweet!

First of all, what's an inverter?

The electrical system in your car, boat, or RV runs on a 12 volt DC system. Your cigarette lighter outlet provides power at 12 volts DC. This is fine for things like a phone charger that have a 12 volt DC plug, but what about items that you normally plug into the wall in your home or office? Those devices run on 110 AC power. The role of the inverter is to change (or "invert") the output from your car's electrical system from 12 volt DC to 110 volt AC.

This AmazonBasics inverter provides a grounded 110 outlet for plugging in those household devices as well as a USB outlet for things like iPhones, iPads, etc. (which is a nice bonus).

So what makes this inverter different? First it's important to know that your vehicle's electric wiring isn't intended to run your toaster or hair dryer. Even though an inverter might be designed to provide a high output for larger devices (like a TV or satellite receiver), your vehicle's poor little cigarette outlet can't handle the load. I've used inverters that claim to support a higher load, and they either blow their own internal fuse, blow a fuse on the vehicle, or (worst case) don't blow any fuses and just burn out the wiring to that outlet. That's bad.

So the difference with this inverter is that it supports loads up to 130 watt through the cigarette lighter outlet. For loads from 131 watts to 175 watts, there is a set of alligator style clips to connect directly to the vehicle's battery.

There are plenty of other inverters out there that connect directly to the battery, but I've never seen one this compact and this inexpensive.

Warning: Only use the direct connection to the battery while your vehicle is parked. Don't try to prop open your hood and drive down the road watching TV.

Here's a little tip. Before you purchase any inverter, look at your devices and see what their loads actually are. Sometimes those specs are written in gobbledygook and are hard to decipher. And some devices have two loads: the initial startup load and the actual running load. The startup load for this inverter cannot exceed 175 watts. To be absolutely certain of the draw from your device or appliance, consider using something like this Kill A Watt Electricity Usage Monitor. You plug the monitor into a wall outlet and then plug your device into the monitor. The readout shows you the peak usage and the running usage. If the peak draw is under 175 watts, then this inverter is OK for you.

Bottom line, I'm very happy with this inverter. It's the first one that I've ever had any success with at this wattage. Just make sure not to overload the 12 volt DC outlet with more than 130 watts. And don't use your toaster while you're driving down the road.

The Amazon basics 175W pocket power inverter is the lightest I've seen, weighing in at only 6.1 oz. with the cigarette lighter plug attached. It is also quite small at 4" x 8" x 0.8", perfect for packing in your computer bag. Besides powering your laptop, it also includes a USB port capable of supplying 2.1A, which plenty for charging a phone, iPad or just about any USB accessory. I tested the little unit on my Dell laptop. It powered it easily. Next, I plugged in a 100W light bulb. Again, no problem. The unit has a fan that comes on as necessary to keep the unit cool. With a 100W load (the light bulb) the fan ran continuously. I found the fan to be rather loud and high pitched. In a car, you may not care but the noise level is significant at 58dB at 1 foot (measured with my audio meter). What I found odd is that the fan ran much faster when the load was reduced or removed. For some reason, the voltage to the fan must drop significantly once a load is placed on the inverter. While the inverter is rated at 130W continuous, you can't (or at least shouldn't) do that from a cigarette lighter socket.

The manual is a little confusing. It says you can run the inverter from the cigarette lighter for loads under 130W but also says for 120W-130W to use battery clamps (included) to hook it directly to the car's battery. Personally, I wouldn't advise running it over 90W from a cigarette lighter socket. At 90W output, the unit draws 10A from the socket. That's okay, since most laptop power adapters require no more than 90W. At 100W, it drew 11Amps, which is over the maximum continuous power most lighter sockets are rated (and fused). I didn't test the unit it past 100W.

If the unit was quieter, I would have given it 5 stars but for using in the car, you may be very happy and you will be hard pressed to find a more compact and light inverter.

The concept is simple: turn 12 V DC from your car into 120 V AC to power things you would normally plug in at home. Useful in an emergency or on road trips.

You plug this into the 12 V socket in your car (what used to be called the cigarette lighter, but most cars today don't even come with the lighter part). A little blue light comes on, and you are ready to plug something into it. I tried a radio, a shop light, and even a handheld jigsaw, and all ran fine.

It also has a USB charger port, which is nice is you don't already have an adapter for that.

I have an old, clunky-looking one piece inverter. The Amazon one looks cooler, but once you add the size of the cord it's not that much smaller. The old one is rated 150 W continuous, this one 130 W. The big difference I noted was in surge capacity. This device is rated to 175 W, while my old one is rated 450 W. It won't make a difference with most small appliances, but something with a big start-up surge or that surges for other reasons may overload this device.

It includes clips to attach it directly to the battery, which will save some loses through the electrical system, and doesn't require having any other parts of the car running to use it. Do use caution when attaching anything directly to the battery.

While not the ultimate in inverter technology, this is a useful thing to have in your car in an emergency.

General Overview

I recently took part in a meteorite search expedition in the desert of Oman that was organized by the local university and natural history museum. The expedition consisted of 18 days in the desert with only the supplies of food, fuel, water, etc. that we brought with us. Temperatures ranged between 6C (42F) to 35C (95F), humidity ranged from below the detection limit of our equipment up to around 90%, though it never rained. In many cases, winds were strong and drove substantial amounts of dust (often sheeting off of the vehicle windows like water). After a matter of hours the interiors of the vehicles were liberally coated with a thick layer of dust, which remained and grew thicker during the entire expedition. Dust and heat are the mortal enemy of electronics, and it's not uncommon for otherwise-robust devices to die horribly in the desert.

I purchased the inverter to run certain basic electronics like battery chargers for AA-size batteries, computers, mobile phones (no service in the desert, but it's good to keep them topped up), two-way radios, and scientific equipment, and other similar uses. Due to the hostility of the environment, I was expecting that this inverter would be "disposable" and didn't expect it to survive the trip.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that not only did the inverter survive the trip but it did remarkably well. While I can't explicitly recommend using the inverter in extreme environments as it's not rated for such purposes, it performed well and would likely serve the average person very well in more ordinary conditions.

Tech Details

Like most inverters produced for the North American market, this one produces 120V 60Hz AC power with a "modified sine wave" waveform that differs from the ordinary "true sine wave" waveform produced by mains power available from your wall socket.

In general, modern electronics that have "worldwide" power supplies (that is, they accept ~100-240V AC power) will have no problems at all using the power produced by the inverter. Laptop computers often have such power supplies and should work fine. Incandescent light bulbs and other simple resistive loads will have no problems at all, though you should make sure they don't have a startup surge current that exceeds the ability of the inverter or the car's electrical system to supply. Electric motors are unlikely to work as effectively with inverter power (if they run, they'll run less efficiently, hotter, etc.) and shouldn't be used with inverters. Many motors often have very high surge current when starting, which may overload the inverter. Certain devices like compact fluorescent light bulbs may or may not work well. You should test them beforehand. Your mileage may vary.

When in doubt it's often more efficient and a better idea to use electronics designed for 12V power directly (such as 12V CFL light bulbs, as often used by RVers, or air pumps that clamp directly to the car battery) rather than using an inverter to power household-voltage devices. You can often find a DC-to-DC converter for things like laptops, mobile phones (particularly those that charge using 5V DC, such as those using a USB plug), etc. that allows you to use or charge them using the 12V power socket in a car (or using battery clamps) directly rather than using an inverter, though not everything (like chargers for a $70,000 x-ray fluorescence analysis scanner) has such converters and an inverter is a necessity.

I experienced no problems with the "modified sine wave" produced by the inverter.

There is a small fan on the side of the inverter to aid in cooling. It will come on automatically when needed, so ensure it's not blocked. I found that the inverter starts with the fan off, then switches it to 100% when the internal temperature reaches a set point. After a minute or so, the fan turns off again. This repeats for a few minutes until the inverter gets a sense of how effective the fan is and then adjusts it as needed to maintain a good working temperature. When operating at full power the fan has a distinctly high-pitched whine that some may find slightly annoying, though it can often be masked by turning on the car radio and/or putting it in the rear of the car.

If you listen very closely you can hear a rapid clicking sound (though it's quite faint and you need to have your head very close to the inverter to hear it -it's not the least bit disturbing or annoying beyond a few centimeters from the inverter) as the internal electronics do their work.

The lighter socket plug and battery clamps are both of good quality and connect firmly and securely.

Safety

It appears that the inverter does not have inrush current limiting on the 12V DC side, so you may experience some sparking when connecting the included battery clamps to the battery as it needs to charge its internal capacitors. This is evidently normal and doesn't pose a problem insofar as the electronics are concerned, but you should ensure that the battery is well-ventilated (as car batteries produce explosive hydrogen gas when charging though not when being used) when connecting or disconnecting the battery clamps. You should use the same safety precautions as when jump-starting a battery.

It's probably a good idea to connect the inverter to the 12V power source first, ensure the blue "on" light is on, and then connect the turned-off load to the inverter, and then turn on the load. It's probably a bad idea to have the turned-on load plugged into the inverter when you connect it, as this would require a substantial rush of current to power.

Additionally, the inverter is not rated for outdoor use, so don't expose it to rain, moisture, etc. In my case, the major threat was dust. After using the inverter for a few hours (regardless of whether it was used inside the car with the power socket or when used outdoors and clamped directly to the car battery) I would unplug it and blow sharply into the vents to clear out accumulated dust. While this worked fine, it's probably not a good idea to expose it (or other electronics) to dust for extended periods of time as it would have a harmful effect on the electronics and the moving fan.

It's not clear if the inverter has an internal fuse -the supplied lighter socket plug and battery clamps are unfused. There does not appear to be any sort of user-accessible fuse on the device.

**********

Possible Improvements

The only three improvements I'd propose for such a device would be to eschew the fan in favor of an aluminum body that passively dissipates heat, to have inrush current limiting on the input side to minimize sparking, and a user-serviceable fuse. The former would eliminate the one moving part and increase durability a bit, though likely at increased cost. The second should be relatively cheap and easy to implement but isn't a major issue. The third helps prevent potentially unsafe conditions and allows the user to replace the fuse if it burns out.

**********

Conclusion

The inverter performed really well in the Omani desert in extreme conditions and is likely to perform well in less-extreme conditions. The price is quite good, it's backed by Amazon, and includes both the 12V lighter socket plug and battery clamps. It's comparable in terms of output power and quality to other similarly-priced inverters.

It's a good general-purpose inverter and I strongly recommend it.

If you need higher output power or pure sine wave output, you'd do well to look at other, more suitable products.

Sterlingtek's Premium 150W CAR ADAPTER FOR HP LAPTOP zv5000 zd8000 zd7000 ACMe llego la compra en la fecha prometida y el producto fue exactamente el que solicite, en buen estado, lo recomiendo

It definitely works and it's worth the money for the application (using the laptop for the kids to view movies). My only complaint is that it's VERY tight in the car outlet, so if you don't pull it out just so, it comes apart. But if you're careful, it's fine (I just don't let my wife do it any more :)). Like the other posters said: The sound of the fan is forgotten very quickly as you're on the road.

The product was in great condition and arrived earlier than expected, which is always a plus. My last charger broke, so i needed a new one immediately and without the over-the-top price the store wants to sell it for. So, I found and purchased this one for $5 after shipping which was exactly what I was looking for.

The only bad thing is that I didn't get much use out of it because I purchase a new phone within a week. Amazon is great and I advise anyone to definitely look here before going to the store.

Thanks!

Yuasa NP12-12 12 Volt 12 AmpH SLA Replacement Battery with F2 Terminal

Yuasa NP12-12 12 Volt 12 AmpH SLA Replacement Battery with F2 TerminalUsed to replace the battery on my son's John Deere electric tractor. I had to cut the strap on the original battery and put the connections onto this one then used electrical tape to hold it in place, works like a charm.

Make sure you charge this battery 18 hours on the first charge! Love this battery and so did my kids on their electric 4 wheeler. This battery gets a lot more time than the original Yuasa NP12-12 that came with the vehicle. Strongly recommend this as a replacement.
