AmazonBasics Wall Charger with USB Outlet (2.1 Amp Output)

AmazonBasics Wall Charger with USB Outlet
  • Note: Please consult your product's user guide to determine compatibility with your device.
  • Easy to use universal design
  • USB port accepts a variety of charging cables
  • Ships in Certified Frustration-Free Packaging

Update 11-18-2011

This compact and foldable 2.1 A (2100 mA) charger can QUICKLY charge Kindle Fire or Apple iPad/iPad2 (you need a different cable for each one). It is NOT one of those "ordinary" USB chargers that outputs only 0.5 A of current.

The Kindle Fire requires just 1.8A of charging current, so this charger is fine (1.8 < 2.1). It is functionally the same as Apple's 10 Watt USB charger which outputs 2.1 A, so it is also suitable for charging the iPad.

You also need to buy a $6 AmazonBasics USB Cable 2.0 A Male to Micro B (6 Feet / 1.8 Meters). Do not use one intended for your cellphone; it may not work.

The total cost is $16, still much cheaper than the dedicated Kindle charger which sells for $25. Apple's 10W charger costs $35.

You enjoy better utility with this charger/cable combo because they are separate, and the charger prong is foldable.

Additionally, the micro USB cable can be used for copying files from your computer to the Fire, and vice versa. This is the kind of cable (USB 2.0 on one end and micro USB on the other) that some reviewers were saying that Amazon should have included in the Fire box.

You can check what both look like in Customer Images on this web page.

The main draw of this AmazonBasics USB wall charger is the 2100 mA current output, which is required for most modern smartphones and iPad/iPad2. You get these gadgets charged the fastest with this charger.

But the shape of this charger will BLOCK adjacent power outlets if it is plugged into the wall or even an extension power strip. In this respect, it is really not an improvement over Apple's 10W USB Power Adapter.

This is why I also bring along a Ziotek ZT1212518 Power Strip Liberator Plus with Pass Through, 5-Pack when I travel. It will allow all outlets to be used by extending the plug a few inches. With its pass through feature, a normal plug can be piggybacked on top of the extender plug, thereby doubling plug density (from 6 plugs to 12 plugs, for example), although the total power consumption still cannot exceed 1680 watts. It comes in a pack of 5, and the average cost is $2.65. I consider this a small price to pay for more convenience and flexibility.

In summary, I do recommend this AmazonBasics charger because it works, is well-made, and costs only 1/3 the price of Apple's part.

UPDATE 26 NOV 2012: I received one of these for review purposes and have liked it so much I've since bought 4 more as my all purpose charger. I use them primarily with a few of my Raspberry Pi Model B Revision 2.0 (512MB) units, a couple of tablets, and my Blackberry. Great all purpose unit (but still check the specifications).

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

Pros:

LED light lets you know it's working

Good for both small devices (e.g., cell phones) and larger devices (e.g., tablets)

With 30 pin USB Charging/Sync Cable can be used with iPads and iPhones

Nice fold down plug in prongs (they don't poke out so easier to store)

Cons(iderations):

You'll need to buy extra cables to use this.

_____________________________________________

USB wall chargers will have two "Output" values clearly printed on them, albeit in really tiny letters. This charger is listed as:

Output: 5.0 VDC / 2100 MA (5.0 volts Direct Current / 2100 milliamps or 2.1 amps)

Before getting an extra, or a replacement, charger for your device, check the output values listed on your existing charger, or check the documentation for the device you will be charging. You can't go wrong if you purchase a charger with the exact volts and amps as indicated (though higher amps is OK see below). An output of 1.0 to 2.0 amps is fairly common for many tablets. The 5.0 volts DC is also pretty common for a lot of devices.

If your device requires a charger with lower amperage, such as a cell phone, this could still charge it. You can ALWAYS use a wall charger with higher amperage than your device requires. Devices PULL the amperage they need, so if your phone requires 500 MA (1/2 of an ampere) and you have this 2.1 amp charger, the extra amperage won't hurt it it will just be there for extra capacity. Too much amperage is not a problem.

Since this product doesn't come with an attached cable, so long as you get a cable with a standard USB plug to attach to the charger, and the other end the correct size, you should be able to charge a lot of different products. For example, my Android tablet uses a non-standard 30 pin USB connector (the kind Apple iPads and iPhones use). I use this quite nicely for my Le Pan TC 970 Android Tablet which has a factory USB wall charger rated at 1.0 amps. With a micro USB cable, I've also used this product to power, and charge, my 500 MA (0.5 amp) Blackberry Curve cellphone. This does require keeping multiple cables around, and swapping them out as needed.

If the devices you want to charge require 500 milliamps or less, and they have a micro or mini USB port, you may want to consider the similar AmazonBasics Micro USB Wall Charger with Micro to Mini USB Adapter. Since that product comes with the cable attached you don't have to acquire anything extra (but you can't use it on iPads and iPhones).

This is a a solid device, 5 stars because it does what it's supposed to do. I will update and annotate over time if it turns out durability is an issue (if it breaks or falls apart I will post an update).

USB charger does work; unfortunately won't charge Nexus 7 tablet, which is what I bought it for. I just wanted to convey that information for anyone else who may be searching (I had to type extra words to meet Amazon's minimum word limit).

Want AmazonBasics Wall Charger with USB Outlet (2.1 Amp Output) Discount?

Some months ago I slightly mangled the USB micro connector on my Kindle Fire charger. It finally became so finicky I had to replace it. I know just any old wallwart will not work because it needs at least 1.8 watts. I searched through Amazon (my fav store for everything). I found the Amazon Basic Wall Charger with Amazon Basic USB cable. The charger specs say 5v@2.1A, the pins fold up and it can use a replaceable USB to micro cable. I ordered the pair for less than $17. I received the pair today. I am testing the charging performance. Reading reviews of the product, whether or not it is compatible with the FIRE is controversial. We shall see. I never liked the design of the charger shipped with the FIRE but I used it constantly while traveling to charge everything I have. Maybe I just wore it out.

OK, I have had it for a few hours. I recharged my KINDLE FIRE from 93% to Fully Charged while operating in about 30 minutes. I will let it fully discharge and see how long it takes to charge 100% both while operating and shut down.

August 16, 2012. I have been using the CHARGER with my Kindle Fire and LG OPTIMUS V and it is the best wall charger I have had for those devices. To charge my Kindle Fire from dead to full: I have not absolutely timed it but I know it takes less than 6 hours. I will try to time it more accurately. Kindle Fire has a weird habit of powering itself up when the charger cable is inserted, then you have to power it back off or it will not charge as fast.

November 8, 2012. My Basic Charger is no longer usable. It has become intermittent. My theory is that the folding plug is the cause. I will not buy another one and I have reduced the rating from 5 to 2. It is time to try something else.

Works with Kindle Fire, but only if you use the right "charging cable" or mod the adapter.

For those who are trying to use this with Kindle Fire, here's what you have to know: Kindle Fire tries to detect if it's O.K. to pull the full 1.8 A from whatever is plugged into its USB port, and it detects the "dumb" AC adapter by checking if the data wires (two inner conductors in USB A connector) are shorted together (because they wouldn't be on a computer, so it's a quick and dirty way to rule out being connected to a computer. This is not part of standard USB spec, but many tablet manufacturers are doing it, I guess following Apple's iPad). If the data wires are not shorted together, Fire assumes you plugged it into a computer and draws no more than 500 mA, so that it doesn't trigger protection circuits for (or burn out) the USB port.

Anyways. This adapter doesn't short the data wires itself, so if you want your Fire to charge at full speed and draw 1.8 A, you need to use a special charging cable that shorts the wires in the cable. Any USB cable you can use to transfer data is NOT a charging cable; a charging cable will be specifically marketted as one, as it cannot be used as regular USB cable and transfer data.

As for me, I don't have a charging cable, so I modded the adapter to short the data pins in the adapter, it's easy enough to open it up and do the quick soldering job (as usual, screws are under the sticker), but you need to have some experience soldering to make sure you don't break something while you are doing that.

DO NOT purchase this product this is a poorly made product they are NOT a premium product as discribed on Amazon these chargers will only last for a month!

I purchased 3 of them all 3 went bad! Used each one for about a month each! The problem is in the cord itself, the wire must break inside the cord & loose connection, I do not pull or stress the cord in any way, they were only used a few times a week! The company will not warranty them passed 30 days!!!!!!!!!

These chargers also have a very short cord length!

Looked good, worked well for exactly 6 days of our 7 day road trip, then the tip fell apart, revealing the wires underneath. Very poor quality.

Hey why pay 20 or more bucks for a charger from a big box store, which for the most part is made in China and will only last a little bit longer, just buy a few of these and keep one in every car you own. I have only had 1 fail (wont charge). for the price I have several more.

Universal Power Group, Inc 84028 Energizer 12 Volt 4 Amp Battery Charger and Maintainer

Universal Power Group, Inc 84028 Energizer 12 Volt 4 Amp Battery Charger and Maintaineri have two 12 volt automobile batteries which are used in summer for my boat. i hooked up the said charger to them. i check the voltages on the batteries at least once a week. float voltages are approx. 13.4. i would like to see 13.8 volts, but this is acceptable. they also charge up the batteries fine after using them for a while. So far so good.

I purchased this product and when it came I was excited but what I found out was that it did not perform at all like it was described. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. The seller was just OK because they did get it to me within a reasonable amount of time but the people that answered the phone didn't have a clue as to the product's capabilities.

Lincoln Lubrication 1444 14.4 Volt Powerluber Kit - 2 Batteries

Lincoln Lubrication 1444 14.4 Volt Powerluber Kit - 2 BatteriesI bought the 14.4V with two batteries and it's a very nice tool. Mine was made in Taiwan. If I had it to do over again I'd probably go with the 12V due to the weight. The 14.4 is pretty big and I ended up making a shoulder strap since I use it for lubing a tractor with lots of grease fittings. I also went for two batteries thinking I might reach for it and have to wait for it to recharge. But you can leave a battery on trickle charge all the time so it will always be ready. Bottom line: the 12V with one battery is considerably cheaper and will also be lighter.

I bought this grease gun mainly for use on my Loader Backhoe which has over 40 grease fittings and usually uses over 14oz of grease every time I grease it. I have a air grease gun in my shop but I often leave my backhoe at the worksite. This grease gun goes any where with its case and extra battery and cut my grease gun time in half, it is very well made and should last a long time. There is no compairison between this Lincon and a cheaper cordless grease gun.

I researched this product on-line and in local stores. I decided on the 14.4V for a gift for my husband. We never realized that greasing farm equipment could be so quick and easy. The battery charged right up, the grease gun purged easily on the first try and the length of the hose made it easy to get to those hard to reach fittings. The Amazon price was the best and there was no shipping.

Motorola TalkAbout T6310 2-Mile 14-Channel FRS Two-Way Radio

Motorola TalkAbout T6310 2-Mile 14-Channel FRS Two-Way Radio
  • 14 channels
  • 2-mile range
  • FM stereo w/ 8 presets
  • 10 NOAA weather channels
  • Rechargeable batteries/charger included

The good.

I got a pair of these for Christmas and have used them while out Kayaking and to keep track of where people are hunting. The terrain is 100-150 foot bluffs leading down to the river and full grown hardwoods covering the 1000+ acres we were in. Reception broke up some at the bottom of the bluffs, but was crystal clear on land. Transmission and reception distance was checked using a GPS and two miles through the woods is the limit. The F.M. radio feature was nice I sat and listened to music paddling and during lunch. Whenever someone would talk the F.M. radio would stop and I could hear conversations clearly. After a second or two pause the F.M. radio would start playing again. It also stops when you transmit. I set the default display for the clock and ended up being very convenient and will likely be left there. The alarm clock/radio feature does work so you can leave one more thing home when you travel with it. If you are used to setting electronics up things are relatively easy considering this is a multifuntion device. The hardest part was figuring out what the two way settings were actually used for as this was my first FRS radio. The NiCads evidently did the trick, I used it all day and the display indicated more than half a charge was left.

The bad.

The belt clip is O.K. on a belt, but if you want to clip it on your upper body so you can just push the button to talk back you will have to work to make it stay in place. I did not like the vox feature as it was too hard to make it transmit even with sensativity set high. The earbuds will have to go and be replaced with the unit that hooks on the top of the ear. I had to keep my stocking hat on all day and rolled down to keep the ear buds in place. The only other thing that I noticed was whenever you recieve or transmit the E.L. backlighting automatically comes on and times out slower than the timer for the F.M. radio to come on and you get to listen to the interference caused by the backlighting module.

The ugly.

I did initially buy the 6320 but returned it as the description of the features in the Cabelas catalog is wrong. It costs more and does not have the F.M. radio built in. Too bad! I would have paid the extra money just the get the amazon green cover. It is just my opinion but the 6310 which is the model I like the best is also the worst color. Such is life.

Would I buy it again? Yes. Will I recommend it to my friends? Yes.

Buy Motorola TalkAbout T6310 2-Mile 14-Channel FRS Two-Way Radio Now

I have used the Talkabout 250's for about 1 year. The 6310 performs just as well, and has many additional features that I find useful. Also, I get about twice the battery life over the 250.

The only drawback that I have found over the 250, is that it is not as easy to change channels. Also, the user interface is not very intuitive.

However, if you can use the extra features, the 6310 is a great radio.

Whistler XTR-190 Laser/Radar Detector Battery Operated with Built in Battery Charger

Whistler XTR-190 Laser/Radar Detector Battery Operated with Built in Battery Charger
  • Internal battery charger for wireless operation
  • 360º total band protection including POP mode radar
  • Tone alert with quiet/auto modes and alert priority
  • Icon display with dim/dark mode
  • Includes 3 AA rechargable batteries, windshield mounting hardware and power cord

The detection capabilities of this Radar detector are very good. It has not failed me thus far and it also filters pretty well. I give it a 3 though because I bought it specifically as I was after a cordless detector.

First issue, you need to charge the batteries first time round through the car lighter charger for 12 hrs (go figure that). Otherwise you would need to invest in a 12V switch power supply to charge outside of the car.

In any case, even after charging it, the battery life is very poor which renders this whole idea of cordless worthless.

So if you are not caught up on the cord vs cordless part, get the corded model and call it quits. You'll be satisfied.

I bought two of these, one for me, one for my fiance. These detectors work well for picking up VG2, traffic sensors on the highway, and at the grocery store. BUT, I've had at least 3 times when a cop has been pointing his radar gun right at me, and this detector did NOTHING. I even got a speeding ticket when the cop was viewable 1/4 mile away. His radar gun pointed right at me, and this detector did nothing.

The only thing it's good for is picking up the static radar that the police use, to monitor the speed of oncoming traffic, while they are driving. That will also let you know if a cop is nearby. Other than that, its a big heavy worthless waste of money.

I don't care about the lame screen, it's the audio that will alert you to look at it and check your speed.

The frist couple times that the cops were standing outside their car with their radar/lydar gun and it didn't go off, I figured that they were just trying to slow traffic, But no, this thing just doesn't do what it's supposed to do.

And it's happened with both of the ones I bought. You get what you pay for. And a speeding ticket.

Whistler makes good products, but not this one. They did something different, and it cost me $182 for the ticket plus $300 for a trsffic lawyer. I could have avoided this if I wasn't trying to be cheap.(and didn't speed all the time)But why else would you buy a detector? cause your a speeder, like me.

Booster Cable, 150A, 10Ga, 12'

Booster Cable, 150A, 10Ga, 12'I was hoping for slightly larger, heavier duty clips but had read enough reviews to have fair warning that they don't open super big. Still, for your typical jumpstart, these will work perfectly. I just wanted to have a second set for our second vehicle. They came quickly and seem to be a nice heavy guage. A great value for the money if you just need to have them for emergencies.

Have not had to use them...but look like good quality and strong.....hopefully will last long in the car truck.

Wouxun KG-UVD1P Dual Band U/V 136-174/400-480MHz Two-way Handheld Transceiver

Wouxun KG-UVD1P Dual Band U/V 136-174/400-480MHz Two-way Handheld Transceiver
  • Dual Band - Dual Frequency - Dual Display - Dual Standby
  • VHF&UHF, UHF&UHF or VHF&VHF working modes
  • Frequency Range: 136-174MHz & 400-480MHz
  • Work Mode: U-V , V-U , V-V , U-U Can Be Set Freely
  • Band Can Be Set Freely on The Same Channel

I know buying Chinese electronics is a roll of the dice... That said, I only seriously considered this unit after reading a positive review in QST magazine and after doing some further research. Several other consumer reviews said essentially the same thing: that it is a pretty good HT for the money. These days, even some of the Japanese "big names" are using Chinese components. So I decided to order one for myself. After purchasing this HT and using it heavily for two months I have to say I was very impressed with the audio quality, the sensitivity of the receiver, the features and also the durability. Furthermore, the cost of accessories is unbelievably low. That is an area where you will save a ton of money. On the downside, the manual is virtually useless because the English (Chinglish) is so bad and that it makes programming without a PC a bit of a chore (but not impossible). A bit of advice: Buy yourself the programming cable. For $15 it is totally worth it and makes programming a breeze. Lastly, I did have one problem with the unit just last week. The transmit LED indicator went out. I contacted my vendor (DuplexCom of Ohio) who sold it to me and they had a brand new replacement unit to me in just four business days (door to door). Which leads to my final point: Choose a vendor who has good customer service like DuplexCom because you will not get much help from China! The product support is all up to your vendor so choose your vendor wisely. Also, your warranty is only 3 months. But in my case it worked out fine. The warranty covered everything except the shipping back to Ohio and I have a brand new unit which I am happy with. I have no regrets and am seriously considering ordering Wouxun's mobile transceiver that will be coming out in February. I think this radio is a steal.

Very nice, good signal reports, easy to use but programming from the HT keyboard is a bit laborious. The programming features are very flexible but that means you have to input many values for each channel. Software to program the HT from your PC is available for a free download from Wouxun. I found the correct driver for this radio, its usb_Vista09.exe. Even though it does not say Windows 7, it does work. Make sure the programming cable is FULLY inserted. Very nice HT for the money.

I purchased one of these from another vendor for about $130 shipped. I have used it for several months, including the collar mic, surveillance kits, multiple antennas, both as an amateur radio operator and in public safety. It works fine with good audio quality, but there are a few issues:

The radio's scan feature is crippled. If the radio is in scan, and you press the button to turn on the backlight, it stops scanning. If you press the button to turn on the LED, it stops scanning. If you try to lock the keypad, it stops scanning. If you want to change which channels are included in the scan, you have to reprogram it from a computer. You can't even use the dual VFO feature while in scan mode even though the second channel is still shown on the screen, it is never checked.

The radio itself has developed a problem. Under certain circumstances which aren't entirely clear, it will occasionally completely reset itself. I suspect this is due to a power connection issue inside the radio, but for something this cheap I'm not surprised. I'm probably going to replace it and use the broken one as a base station radio.

The belt clip, where it connects to the battery, is too tight. It takes serious effort to remove the belt clip. Which would be fine, except that it's also weak. The piece that actually fits in to the battery has broken on me, necessitating a replacement. In fact, all of the plastic pieces here are of significantly poorer quality than what you would get with, say, a Motorola.

I have used the longer antenna. It's too long to use in the field, but as a base antenna it works fine and does improve quality. While we're talking about antennas, on my original antenna the plastic piece has chipped, resulting in the actual antenna coming out of it at an angle. It still works, but yet another example of poor materials. The replacement antenna, the end cap fell off and got lost, so I had to cover it with gaffer's tape.

The surveillance earpiece works fine. The surveillance microphone does not. I am told that it results in a 'muffled' sound which is barely readable. The collar mic works fine.

Powerline By Original Power 0900-78 140/200-Watt Pivoting Inverter with USB Charging Port

Powerline By Original Power 0900-78 140/200-Watt Pivoting Inverter with USB Charging PortI purchased this item at Wal-mart while on a business trip. I left my charger for my GPS at home and the GPS uses a mini-usb charging port. It worked perfectly for the GPS which draws a very small amount of power. I then used it with my laptop which uses a 70 watt adapter, well below the rated 140 watts. The unit fried in less than an hour. It burned out two fuses in my car. I foolishly tried it in a second cigarette outlet after it blew the fuse in the first one.

The unit smelled of burned electrical circuitry. I thought that perhaps I just got a defective unit until I read a review on Amazon about another Powerline brand inverter where the customer had the same experience with two units.

The unit is very compact and light. It easily fits into my computer bag and is 1/3 or less the weight of the typical converter. In that respect the unit is perfect but don't expect it to last long running a laptop. If they make it more durable for a laptop or any device pulling over 50 watts, this would be a great item.

I bought it from Walmart. I was playing music in my car for about 2 hours with the engine off. I then decided to plug the inverter into the cigarette lighter to charge my iPhone. When I connected the iPhone via the USB port, I could smell the unit burning and it blew the 20 amp fuse for the cigarette lighter/radio.

A few days later I opened the unit and I could see some type of white frothing that looked like whip cream but it was hard. I could not tell if this occured when the unit was frying since the smell was gone. The unit has a 25 amp fuse which was still intact which explains why the current by passed it and blew my car's 20 amp cigarette lighter fuse.

I think the amps on this should be less than that of cigarette lighters so that the unit should burn out first. I am no electrician but I believe this could start a fire starting at the unit.

Works great, powers whatever. The fan built-in keeps it cool and working strong. The fan noise can get a little high when drawing power from both ports, but it's worth it!

It works but it is louder than your car's ac being on full blast! I thought there was something wrong with my car the first time i heard it kick on. Wait until you hear this thing! You can't use it unless it's in a noisy area. It would drive anyone nuts! Try to find a quieter one maybe. My old one, was built better, more stylish, compact, was silent and worked great. Wish I could find that one again. It finally broke after 5 years of kids kicking the crap out of it the shuffling around in my backseat. I will keep this one and just keep the stereo up unless I find a better one for now.

This worked well for my IPhone....I can hear it trying to power up my hair straightener but was not successful in doing so. It was a disappointment because that was the reason I purchased it. I do like the style and the Pivoting part though.

Black Rapid Car Charger for Creative Zen Micro / V Plus

Black Rapid Car Charger for Creative Zen Micro / V Plus
  • Brand new non-OEM
  • Vehicle Lighter Adaptor
  • Intelligent IC chip inside recognizes a full battery and automatically switch to a saver.
  • Plug never heats or overcharges the battery.
  • Short circuit protection.

I plugged it into my car and my 6 gb zen micro photo and it not only didn't charge the player it killed the battery which still had a 1/2 charge on it.

It is a generic charger and does not work for this player.

I got this charger in August 2007. I plugged my player into it every time I used it in the car. Between late January 2008 and early August 2008 it wasn't being used because it was not in my possession (or anybody else's). Then in late February 2009 I noticed that it wouldn't plug in anymore. When I examined the mini-USB end, I saw that a little piece inside was sunken in and caused the metal inlet to be pushed inside the rubber body when plugging it into the player. I tried to use tweezers to pull up the metal form inside, but it was no use. I threw out the charger and am buying another one to see if it happens again. I think this time though, I will only plug in my player for trips longer than 15 minutes. It took about a year altogether for this problem to occur, with daily plugging and unplugging.

Car Charger For LG VX8500, VX8550, VX8600, EnV/VX9900, KG800

Car Charger For LG VX8500, VX8550, VX8600, EnV/VX9900, KG800So far so good. I bought this charger for my LG Chocolate VX 8550. The Verizon charger, which is much more expensive, overloads the circuit in the car and makes my outlet useless. A mechanic actually advised me to get a cheaper (non brand name charger). So I went with this one. Works better than the expensive ones.

I recently purchased the NOCO Genius G750 6V/12V 750mA Fully Automatic Battery Charger and Maintainer (Grey) and decided to purchase the 10 foot extension, the cords the charger came with were long enough but I like having the extra slack when I need it.

Uniden Public Safety Receiver (Home Patrol- 1)

Uniden Public Safety ReceiverThe Uniden Home Patrol-1 is an amazing piece of technology. A touch screen scanner that requires very little user input, and has the entire US frequency database in its memory. For the most part, the HP-1 make scanning as simple as can be. You hook up the scanner to your PC, and run the Uniden Sentinel Software. The software downloads the latest frequency database from RadioReference. You upload the the database to the scanner, and you're good to go. Just enter your Zip Code, City, or GPS coordinates, and the HP-1 will scan all the agencies in your area. You can even hook up an optional GPS unit to automatically follow your location. You set the range of the scanner from 0-30 miles to limit how far away the agencies are that the scanner will attempt to scan. You can also select the type of agencies you wish to listen to. I find the "location" setting to be hit or miss. It seems to think that towns that are 40 miles from me, are actually less than 1 mile from me. It also thinks agencies in my own town are more than 10 miles away. This is due to the database, not the scanner. The database has been getting updated on a daily basis, to get it more accurate and up to date. I find that setting up your own "Favorites Lists" works well in listening to what you want to.

As for the hardware itself, the HP-1 is a very solid performer. The receiver has great sensitivity and selectivity. I've listened to APCO-25 digital systems, EDACS, and Motorola analog trunking systems. All of them were configured correctly without any user input. Audio quality is good, but not great. It is about what I expected from a very small speaker. The small SMA duck antenna performs surprisingly well, especially on UHF. The touch screen is bright and easy to use. Battery life with the included 2300mAh batteries is good. I get over 8 hours on a single charge. The scanner is capable of replaying and recording transmissions. A very cool feature. The scanner also comes with a home charger/adapter, car charger/adapter, and home stand. The stand is a nice touch. The HomePatrol-1 is a nice addition to my collection of scanners. People that don't like to program their scanners, or would like to use it in different areas, will probably enjoy it also.

Update: A few months ago, Uniden introduced a new "Extreme Upgrade" firmware update for the Home Patrol-1. They are charging $100 for this upgrade, and it adds some new features to the scanner. So basically in order for you get all the features of the Home Patrol-1, you now have to spend $600, or you'll have a crippled $500 radio. In my opinion, this is a dangerous practice. Many in the Amatuer Radio Community are outraged about this, but everyone has to decide for themselves whether or not they have an issue with this. As a matter of principle, I will not be paying another $100 for a firmware upgrade, and I lowered my rating from 5 stars to 4 stars. I will also think twice about purchasing another Uniden radio since I'll never know whether or not Uniden will be charging for future upgrades.

Could I be dreaming? Is this really true for this price? All these features with a touch screen? Long and the short of it is this is an amazing breakthrough in digital scanners at this price point! I am a news videographer who has worked in many different markets for various stations and has had a number of different scanners through the years. The Home Patrol 1 beats many of them hands down from both a pro and amateur level. Yes the unit needs some work but I expected that as this is such a new product.

The Pros: Right out of the box you can set it up to work via zipcode, city, GPS(need the proper connection), or area (the HP1 automatically picks up what signals are in the area). These methods work extremely well right out of the box but do have some issues which I'll get to in the Cons section.

For this price it comes with everything, home AND car charger, preloaded frequencies, stand and software all in a touch screen package. Hands down this can't be beat.

The touch screen is brilliant and relatively easy to navigate. Set brightness, auto dim, contrast and power save to your liking and your off.

Having all the frequencies preloaded on a 2gig micro SD card is great also Plus the fact that Uniden updates the list on a regular basis which is taken care of just by plugging the unit into the computer and hitting update in the software.

Squelch, attenuation, range, inputting frequencies, favorites, gps connection and yes even recording are all here.

The In Between: My understanding is that Uniden knows about these problems and are working on fixing them.

While having the ability to set zipcode, range, area etc. is fantastic the unit gets a bit confused and leads to excessive work out of the box. I put my zipcode in and it loaded states that were over two hours away. Same thing with entering range, I set it for 15 miles and it loads frequencies from over forty miles away. So then you have to work on locking out channels left and right.

You can set up what you want to listen to such as fire, police, transportation, rail, etc. but the problem is even with certain departments chosen it will just load everything up. For example all I wanted was police, fire and ems yet it loaded up rail, airports and transportation anyway.

Again Uniden knows about these problems and is working on them.

The Bad or Nitpicky: Being able to save favorites in the unit is a good thing to have but to make an entire list is a giant time consuming pain and your much better off making a list in the software which leads me to the next problem. The software is easy to navigate but has little to no instruction on creating and saving your lists to the unit. I figured it out and once figured out it is a snap but a little instruction would go a long way. In fact entering and saving frequencies in the software is easier than entering them in the unit itself.

The touch screen is a giant step forward but needs some tweeks. I like seeing County, Department, Frequency etc. and be able to one touch lock but to skip a channel requires a three touch process on the tiny bar on the right which while driving can be a pain. This needs to be a one button step like on other handhelds.

The squelch feature is great to have but on the other handheld units you have more finite control with a turn type knob.

Overall a fantastic scanner for the money, it really can't be beat. Yes there are some nitpicky issues but Uniden is working on addressing them and once addressed will make the Home Patrol 1 THE unit to have. Uniden needs to come out with the car mount like they said they were going to three months ago.

Any questions on the software or unit feel free to ask.

I'm in a small city in New Mexico and I'm sure that this scanner works perfectly in Dallas or even Albuquerque but it doesn't work where I am. The advertisements state that when you type in your zip code or city you can begin listening to fire, police, emergency transmissions etc. Unfortunately the transmissions come from a database and if your local police, fire, etc. frequencies aren't in the data base you hear nothing at all. The unit looks like you are scanning Police, railroads, etc. but it never stops.

I'd advise contacting Uniden before investing in this expensive unit if you are in a small town or city.

I've owned all types of scanners over my life having to jump to new technologies as radio systems have evolved across this land.

This particular uniden isn't geared towards the advanced user, you know who your are,the ones who are at ease with programming in trunked radio systems, modes, attenuations and the like. This scanner is geared toward general novice scanner users.....and it's a breeze to use for the most part...I really like it's ability to record audio unattended...and replay it displaying the agency and talkgroup just like as if it were capturing the transmission in real time. It's fun to use while sleeping in a hotel, then replaying what happened overnight in a town you're unfamiliar with... You tend to get a feeling of the more crime ridden parts of a community, (Ooh better stay off so in so street on my way to that meeting etc.)

Even though it really is intended for Home use...you can use it while mobile and even attach hockey puck style GPS devices(with a whole lot of wiring) so you can tool down our nations roadways listening where legal as you drive, it will track systems as you move from area to area... Please remember it's unlawful to use and even have a scanner in your car in a few states (MN,IN,KY,FL,SD,NY) ..So those of you who intend on tossing the unit on your dashboard like a GPS, while trucking cross country might run afowl of the folks you're listening to, so play nice..and follow the laws. Just cuz it's lawful to scan in your home, doesn't mean it's lawful nationwide to scan while mobile.

The audio of the unit at home is fine, while mobile it's not as loud as it should be...and an external speaker should be considered...and there's no easy way to mount the unit in many cars simply because of where Uniden chose to place the SMA style antenna. (it's a very poor location).

It has some advanced features buried in the advanced menu portion of the unit , if you want to manually program a frequency, or tell it to avoid specific systems or departments with in 20 miles or so of you...and as discussed in other reviews...the manual is just plainly poorly written and the software isn't the best either. But it's uniden's first real attempt at a scanner for the masses, living with advanced radio systems in their midst, using data from Radio reference to find it's way from city to city , department to department.

All in all a 4 out of 5 , NOT too highly recommended for folks who are used to the technological side of scanning, but rather those who live in a city with advanced public service communications systems and really just wish to listen to what's happening when a siren races past your home. Just pop in the zip, block out (avoid) the systems and agencies you don't want the unit to receive and you're off and running.

Enjoy and remember watch those mobile scanner laws....you don't want a Kentucky State Patrol person rolling a Crown Vic rear tire over your $500.00 HP 1 at the side of the road during a traffic stop.

My objective was to find a user friendly scanner that did not require an advanced degree is math and physics coupled with years of programming experience, and a professional electronics background. This scanner is easy to use right out of the box, and meets that criteria. What a novel idea . . . a product easy to use and understand.

Pyle PL12V2US Cigarette Lighter Multiplier with USB Charger

Pyle PL12V2US Cigarette Lighter Multiplier with USB Charger
  • Powers two 12V electronic items
  • 5V USB full size female port
  • 2 front mount female cigarette lighter ports
  • Single corded male cigarette lighter power source
  • Ultra bright LED indicator

I bought this item about a month earlier, and straight out of the box I couldn't fit a USB into the USB slot. It was off center of the hole so I got some pliers and managed to pull it down enough to where the USB would plug into it but it wouldn't charge. I thought maybe since the USB was off center it may have had something to do with it so I gladly returned it to Amazon free of charge and bought another one. Straight out of the box the USB does not work, AGAIN. This one the USB actually went right into the slot though. As far as I know the cigarette sockets work but what's the point of including a USB slot on it if it's unusable? Another slight complaint is that the unit itself has scratches and scuffs on it almost appearing to be used instead of new.

Buy Pyle PL12V2US Cigarette Lighter Multiplier with USB Charger Now

Because we have older cars but wanted multiple 12 volt powered devices plugged in to the cigarette lighter for trips...I tried this. I do hate having wires and the thing sitting on the car floor....but having an easy way to plug in the GPS and Radar for trips is worth it. I just leave it on the garage counter until we are ready to travel...and then plug it all in. If I wasn't so cheap I would just buy a new car.... but this works great.

Ultra bright LED indicator does not exist.

DC jacks are too short for some common plugs... they plug in, but pop right out.

USB port was not aligned properly and doesn't seem to work at all, though I suspect the welds on the board were probably damaged by the angling and pushing required to get a usb cord plugged in... so it might have worked if it had been assembled/designed correctly.

I am glad I read the review from Eric. I purchased this to install in the cap in the back of my truck. After reading the review, I decided I better check mine before installing it. I connected an iPod to the USB port, and it did not work. The two other outlets do work. I tried the USB port on my GPS and it worked. I tried another iPod and cable, and it did not work. It seems to work on some and not others. There is no ultra bright LED light as description claims. There is no way to mount or install this unit, so I planned on using stick on velcro to mount it to the carpet in the cap.

  • 2.1 Amp/10W rating gives Fastest Charging Time.

Just received mine last night. Seems to work fine with my iPad 4. It doesn't have the solidly built feel that an Apple product has, and the LED is bright and so a little annoying (that can be easily covered if you prefer) but for the money I am totally satisfied. Note that I am NOT hearing the humming sound that another reviewer mentioned. (update 1 month in. Still happy. This stays plugged in next to my bed 24x7 so that it's there to plug into my iPad when I go to sleep; still working fine)

SKQUE HTC HD7 Wall / AC / Home Charger + Car Charger + USB Cable

SKQUE HTC HD7 Wall / AC / Home Charger + Car Charger + USB CableI purchased these items due to the inexpensive price. The first thing I noticed was that the car charger worked intermittently and I had to move the cigarette adapter around to charge the item. Due to the inexpensive price, I figured that I could live with this.

Next, the USB sync cable quit working. I first thought the issue was with my phone or computer but when connecting the original USB cable from HTC, everything worked fine. For the price and the time spent troubleshooting the problem, I would recommend buying original cables and accessories.

This product came very quickly, the price was a steal and I am able to charge the unit car, house or computer
