Whistler Pro-800W 800 Watt Power Inverter

A prime selling point is the internal technology it's designed to handle high startup loads for longer than most inverters. Note that a common load nowadays laptops and electronic equipment (which use their own transverters) have a high capacitive load. Power tools usually an inductive load. So you need an inverter that won't trip out while most modern (i.e. non resistive) loads start.

For my wife's van 3 laptops and a Wii is common. For my truck for various power tools. My trusty 400W would no longer reliably handle the load. Esp at startup without a plug which in first dance.

Don't look for cigarette lighter adapter it just won't work for 800W. They're common with 400W inverters but won't reliably supply them either (12-14v x 15 Amps is about 200 watts). And even your cigarette lighter wire is usually undersized (read not for continuous use at fused amperage) So don't ding any high power inverter over cigarette lighter adapters it's a simple technical requirement.

To handle the load, I'm running new fused power wires from the battery through the firewall to the dash.

Note one trick on running wire run two 10 gauge wires instead of one large one for each polarity. Just be sure each red/positive is individually fused at the battery and the you can tie them together at the inverter (each wire is self protected safe and both together supply needed current). This is a common trick used by HAMs and others. Much easier wire to work with and fuses (up to 40A) are standard automotive fuses and holders.

I use this power inverter to power a laptop, webcam, and video camera while storm chasing. The only problem I have is the USB slot. It will not keep up with a smart phone, at least with everything powered up and charging. I fixed that issue by adding a small extension cord.

Really this inverter works pretty good. Keep in mind you're getting what you pay for. If it's cheap, don't have overly high expectations for a product to last 20 years. Mine is used and abused as it sits in the floor of my car. Passengers kick and step on it all the time and it continues to function.

All in all I thinks it's worth the purchase.....

I have a 2000 watt Whistler inverter and am very happy with it (I wrote a review of it if you're interested). The 2000W version is part of a solution (package? system?) I put together to supply power for a few items I'd like to have available in a power grid failure like a hurricane or an ice storm.

Part of that solution is a pair of 12V batteries and a battery charger (NOCO Genius G7200). The batteries supply the power to the 2000 watt inverter. The charger keeps them ready or, if the grid is down, recharges them. My problem was how to supply power to the charger if I deplete the batteries and the grid remains down.

Turns out my NOCO charger needs only 150 watts to charge the batteries. This Whistler 800 watt inverter can provide that without breaking a sweat, and only needs 80 amps DC to provide it (actually, to provide 800 watts, not just the puny 150 watts my charger needs). My car's alternator provides 105 amps, way more than the Whistler 800 needs to max out.

So I bought this item and now my car can power this 800W inverter that can easily and safely recharge the batteries that supply my 2000 watt inverter. At the same time as it's charging the big guy, this 800W inverter has power to spare for lights and low-draw electronics (laptops, cell phones, cable/DSL modems, wireless routers, VOIP boxes, cordless phones, yada yada yada).

You can buy the 400 watt version for a bit less if you like, but if your car will support the 800 watt version (80 amps minimum) why would you not opt for more power and flexibility for just a few bucks more?

Stanley Simple Start Battery Booster

I charged the unit fully when it arrived. It did become slightly warm to the touch, but it did not get hot at all.

When my 2007 Honda CRV's car battery was sufficiently discharged to a level when it would not start, I followed the instructions on the unit's 12V cable tag. After about 15 minutes being plugged-in and attached to my vehicle's 12V outlet, the unit's display informed me that I could now attempt starting-up the car. I tried it and it started-up successfully!

The next month, my 2001 Volvo V70 station wagon's car battery was now sufficiently discharged that it would not start the engine. This time the unit took the maximum 30 minutes to boost the Volvo's battery. I guess the Volvo has a larger but older battery as compared to the CRV. But the engine was able to start-up too.

I am no expert on car batteries and boosting, but it seems to me that this unit is not half bad!

My unit didn't work right out of the box. When I called tech support to make sure I was doing everything right, I was greeted by a very rude operator who tried to tell me the unit had been discontinued for a number of years and was out of warranty. When I confronted him with the copyright on the manual being just 1 year old, I was told that I should deal with the retailer. I had higher expectations of Stanley and they will be getting a letter from me. This company they have sold their name to (so has Black & Decker and another big name I forget) is destroying their reputation.

I have a 2011 Volt. It seems there is some software bug that causes the 12V battery to discharge under certain conditions. After this happened to me the first time I bought this Stanley battery booster. So when my Volt decided to die again yesterday I hooked up the Stanley to it and let it charge the car's battery for about 30 minutes until it had no more power left. I went in the car and tried to start the car but it was only half alive and all the systems wouldn't come on-line. Fortunately this happened in my garage so I was able to then charge the car's battery with my Sears charger and then the car was ready to go. So at least for my car this Stanley unit did not "save the day" for me.

No Name in the ad has a .5A Charger written on the A/C Charger unit; it tests as 232 mA actual; it charges from 20 to 80% in 19,514 seconds-54% under spec, less than a USB computer port in a computer and not able to charge the phone unless it was powered down (although it will tread water if you are reading on it). Ok for the price, but not what you want when you travel and use the phone a lot. It may take 9+ hours for the full charge if fully discharged. But you get a cord and a car charger (not tested) included in the deal, so it may be an ok deal.

For comparison, a USB Power from a Computer which is restricted to .4 A max; tested as 346 mA actual; 20 to 80% in 14,659 second. The Samsung OEM included with phone, 1A Travel Charger tested out at 849 mA actual; 20 to 80% in 5341 seconds.

CONCLUSION: I am keeping this as a light duty home charger plus car charger, but I am buying a better A/C charger for travel. FYI, I got a best value for a good charger from the .7A slim look Samsung Travel Charger (testing shows it to be accurate, a rarity it seems). I bought this dock/holder to replace one used for an iPhone 4 that was not compatible with an iPhone 5. So far the dock has worked just fine. It holds the phone in a stable position and has never rotated in the power outlet. It is a bother to have to attach two cables (power and audio) when using the phone but that can be blamed on Apple for changing the power connector.

I use this to hold my IPhone5. It fits! The slide adjustment is easy to work. The holder is strong and does not make me feel like my phone is going to be tossed around on a bumpy road. I have not used the power aspect of the unit, so I cannot rate its ability to re-charge the phone. I would recommend this to anyone who needs a good car phone holder.

This wasn't the cheapest device I found on Amazon, but by-far the best in comparison with the two. This device works with no problem what-so-ever, the battery holds it's charge, and the functions are wonderful. That said, once I did slide the sd card in and it went in between the slot and the plastic and I did have to unscrew it to recover the card.

I purchased this unit to power the Koolatron Compact Kooler, which uses 4.5 amps. I initially purchased the Sunforce 55520, which was a big mistake. It arrived dead on arrival and after some research I realized that it never really had the power to run the fridge, even though it boasts 5.8 amps.

I tried to operate a 12-volt fan that is rated at 2.6 Amps and the voltage dropped WAY below 12 volts-making it severely underpowered. The adapter says it can handle 5 amps, I would hate to think what actual voltage it is putting out if you try to put that much load on it. Great product. Great output. Hooked up two in parallel. They charge the battery bank in my small off grid mtn cabin enough to run the refrigerator and fluorescent lights 24 hours a day. Plus I did an hours worth of vacuuming, and even used the table saw one day. I had plenty of charge to spare. They were comparable to the Kyocera models, however shipping is free for these.

I finally found a grid tie inverter on Amazon that works with this panel the 500W 24-52v Mass Power Inverter. The 300W inverters only go up to 30V, and when I tested this panel with my multimeter, I read 31.4V. Since this solar panel is out of range for the 10.8v-30v 300W inverter I only saw a red fault led. I bought the 500W 24-52V, then tried it with the 500W and it works. After I plugged everything in, the green lights start to run. I measured 1.5A and 178W input using Kill-a-Watt

I bought the MC4 plugs, 10AWG solar panel wire, inverter, and solar panel here on Amazon. So now that I know this works, I'll get the rest of the panels I need.

Update:

Make sure that the 10AWG wire from the panel to the inverter is no longer than 3 feet. I can get 200W instead of 178W. I suppose due to loss. Also the 600W 24-60v inverter will support two of these panels unlike the 500W versions. I used 3/8 ring terminals from Home Depot.

Panels are very well manufactured. I dropped an 18V battery for my cordless drill 9 feet on to the front of a panel. The glass was only scuffed.

You may be assured of five star customer service from both Amazon, and Grape Solar for these panels. Since I ordered them one at a time, I'm convinced I'll only buy Grape Solar from Amazon. Both are awesome!

Panels come bubble wrapped and sandwiched between two wooden pallets.

Save yourself some money: buy eye electrical connectors and cut off those "standard solar" connectors, crimp on the eye connectors, and attach individually to 8 gauge wire from a local hardware store acting as a bus.

This is a well made panel and it exceeds the specs. While there is very little info on Amazon, you can look up all the Grape Solar stuff on Home Depot's web site. The frame is strong and mounted easily. With a 50 foot run of 10 gage wire to my controller, I can get 242 watts and 16.2 amps into my 12 volt battery setup and they are never low enough to see what the max oputput is. I will run one battery down and test this later and post the results (output is dependant on what the battery draws). This is a 24 volt panel, but it is a NOMINAL 24 volt pannel, so don't plan on charging 24 volt batteries with it, But through a controller into a 12 volt battery system it is great. I can equalize my batteries at 16.1 volts with no problems. I even had 2.2 amp output in the rain! Very efficient pannel as far as solar goes. Highly recommend it.

These panels are relatively lightweight and rugged. I like that the cells are encapsulated to protect them. Combined with SUN-600G 600W Watt Micro Grid Tie Solar Power Inverter Solar Panel 120V AC NEW US SELLER, I have measured the output of the inverter to be 2.5 Amps (~300 Watts) for most of the day with 2.7 Amps max so far when plugged into a 120v 60Hz outlet. It is currently winter here so I would expect this combination to produce more power in spring and summer. As I expand my system I will consider buying more of these solar panels.

This GPS Turns Off once this charger is plugged on.. and it takes a very long time to charge. Though you charge the GPS for more than 45 min, it doesnot even stay on for 5 min also which shows that the charger is not working.

After a couple of months, the USB plug came apart, and the metal pieces fell out. I was able to put it back, but lamented the poor construction of this product. It's cheap, so I guess you get what you pay for.

I decided to buy this because in my car (thanks to the location of the cigarette lighter) it was impossible to use the shorter, springy power cord that came with the radar detector. The instructions are simple (available online at , also pasted below), and what really took me the longest was finding the right fuse to use and then a ground screw to connect the other terminal. But that's really more a function of your car than of the product. Once I got that sorted out the rest was easy and it works and looks great!

INSTRUCTIONS (from Cobra website at ):

1. Connect the fused wire to a fuse in the fuse box. The fuse for the radio is recommended. To connect the wire to a blade-type fuse, it is recommended to use a fuse tap available from Radio Shack. Part number 270-1204 for standard blade fuses, or part number 270-1218 for mini-blade fuses.

2. Plug the cable into the radar detector and turn on the detector.

3. Turn on the ignition.

4. Touch the other wire to various screws under the dash. When the detector turns on, you have found a ground screw. Attach the wire to this screw.

5. Carefully run the cable to the detector, avoiding the brake and gas pedals.

This completes installation.

This wire kit was just what I needed to get my Cobra Radar Detector up out of the way on my windshield. I now have mine mounted just to the right of the rearview mirror. I didn't want to cut the original power cord so I can still use it in another vehicle. The kit wire is very thin and easy to tuck under interior trim to hide the wire. I wired mine to the accesory fuse so it turns on and off with the ignition. loved getting that wire off my dash and opening up my outlet again.

I was able to hardwire my Cobra radar detector in about an hour. Works great and the wires are small enough to fit in the ceiling of my car without taking it off. Makes for simple installation. The wire reaches from my mirror all the way down to my fuse box with plenty of slack. Highly recommend.

Bought two of these batteries. One is good and the other was bad. When contacted about the bad battery the vendor just asked me questions.

They asked me if the battery was really bad and delayed the process. They never would give me authorization to return even though they were initially contacted in the warranty period. This store will not honor the warranty so you are taking your chances buying from this store. I recommend buying a better battery. It will cost more, but my last 2 Yuasas lasted 12 years.

Update 3/30/2013 I hung in there for 6 months and finally got a replacement battery. They promised me a 15% credit due to my extended wait, but I have never seen it and don't expect to. These people do poorly in the follow through and I just don't have the energy to keep bugging them for 6 months to get the credit like I had to to get the replacement battery.

This is a great item to have in the car, just in case. I don't like how fast the battery in my phone runs down, so having this is a lifeline. One thing I would strongly suggest is to either avoid having it plugged in when you're away from your car or cover it up so it can't be seen from the outside. A charging cell phone is a red flag for someone looking for something to steal in a mall parking lot for example.

Retractable Car Charger for HTC Inspire 4G

So far so good, the charger works great and the retractable cord is really nice. As a side note, I bought this for my husband's phone and noticed one day when I got in the car he was having issues with the cord and kept pulling on it to try and get it to retract...there is a button you push, the cord goes right in no problems. Just FYI.

I would avoid AeroVironment's charging station. I have one and my charging station is 11 months old now; it fails about once a week, sometimes more often. By "fails" I mean vehicle charging stops and the trouble light illuminates. The charging station trouble light can only be reset manually by cutting off the circuit breaker to the unit (hopefully you've installed one near the charging station, otherwise you'll have to go to the panel box). This is annoying when this happens during overnight charging cycles and the vehicle doesn't get charged. Big unpleasant surprise in the morning. Despite repeated calls to AV and promises from them, nothing has been resolved to date.

I know others have had good luck...that hasn't been my experience. And, my charging station was professionally installed through the vehicle manufacturer's ordering website.

PROS:

serial number (necessary for warranty work) is located on a label affixed to the bottom of the unit, and is printed in a font requiring a scanning electron microscope to read.

I've had this product installed in my garage for 14 months and have had no problem with it. It interfaces perfectly with the timer on my Leaf to insure that I charge during off-off-peak hours without fail. I'm confident every morning that I will be on my way with a full charge.

This charger is well made of high quality component parts, but it's grossly overpriced. If the ultimate goal here is to have legions of EV's out there then critical accessories such as this charger (must have item for any EV owner) must cost much less than I had to pay here ($1,100 incl. shipping), and the unit must be professionally installed (could easily cost another grand). In my own case, I'm an electronics engineer, I installed this myself, and configured it so it is portable. Taking it with you is necessary, there are not enough stations out there yet. And as I say, it's too damn expensive, could really be had for much less (hello any capitalist business types out there especially green ones!). Ultimately, this is a very well made, quality and very EXPENSIVE product, delivered in good condition and in a timely fashion, by those good folks out there at AMAZON. If you are trying to support the Tesla, don't buy this product!

You can save about $1000 buy getting the NEMA 14-50 dryer socket ($20) instead. (Made by many vendors.)

This is the same socket you find in RV-parks.

This product is a glorified extension cord. The Telsa cars come with their own cord.

If you do buy this product, be sure to make the electrician install it using the NEMA 14-50 plug and socket.

It is not clear to me why auto companies want to make it so difficult to plug in, and require a "charger".

My electrician was able to install this charger very easily. The cord is quite long so accommodates my driveway with tandem parking. I use it to charge my Chevy Volt. It was a lot cheaper than the cheap GE product that Chevy referred me to after getting my own installation. If you have a washer/dryer nearby then it will be easy to access the 240V. Very happy and it also is fully sealed in the rain. Highly recommended.
