SOLAR BA7 100-1200 CCA Electronic Battery and System Tester

I needed to chase down a slow starting problem that only happened once in a while. I wanted to rule out the battery as the problem, but also needed to test the battery voltage drop during starting. Many digital multimeters have a "peak hold" feature that will hold the highest reading, but for starter testing you need to hold the reading of the lowest voltage measured during starting. The conductive CCA test of the Solar BA7 gave me the battery condition information I needed. The system test gave me the starter load voltage drop test I needed.

The Solar BA7 gets its operating voltage from the battery and indicates the no-load battery voltage when you connect its clips to the battery posts. You then can select the CCA test, enter in the battery's rated CCA, and get a reading of the actual CCA of the battery using a conductive test that sends a 1KHz sinewave through the battery to measure its internal resistance. Next, you switch to the SYSTEM test and crank the car. The BA7 will indicate and hold the lowest voltage reading obtained during starting and give you an "OK" or "FAIL" indication using LEDs. Then, as the engine is running you can advance to the charging test and see the battery voltage while the alternator is providing a charge. Once again, the BA7 gives you an LED indication of "OK" or "FAIL".

The BA7 is a handy tester to have for a quick test of your car's starting and charging system. It is simple enough for the non-technical person to use, but useful for the experienced tech to do troubleshooting. If you only need a one-time test, you can get that for free at many auto parts stores. But, if you are chasing down an intermittent problem, or want a battery system tester for your automotive toolbox, the BA7 is a good product to have.

I've been in the auto repair business for over 25 years. I've seen just about every kind of tester there is. Some only a few hundred bucks, others in the thousands. All to test a car's battery and charging system. I am proud to announce that this tester does everything that is necessary to determine the battery and charging system's state of health for under 100 bucks. It's all I use now. This is a great product for the home auto maintainer. I'm impressed with the design and the build quality. We have 4 cars, 2 of which are specialty cars that are not driven frequently. The battery tester revealed a problem with the battery I least suspected, in my wife's car, which had not exhibited a noticeable starting problem. One minor thing to mention the display is a bit difficult to read in bright sunlight, but it is fine if in a garage or shielded from bright light.

As a long time mechanic, and seeing the price of professional grade stand alone tools continuing to rise to ridiculous prices, I was VERY happy to find this SOLAR BA7 Tester.

Hook it up to the battery on your car, mower, ATV, etc etc, press a button or two, and then you have an instant digital read out in numbers, as well as color coded status lights for the condition of your Battery, Starter, or Alternator. And for cheap!

PROS:

1) It takes a matter of seconds to perform any test, making this simple to use.

2) You can perform tests on batteries hooked up in a car still, or unhooked, making this extremely time saving if you don't have to remove a battery to test.

3) You don't have to fully charge a battery to test!!! Almost all other testing units for batteries you have to have a fully charged battery, which is a pain in the butt, and waste of time. But not for this, you can test on a daily used battery that's not fully charged, genius!

4) Most consumer grade battery testers only give you a read out of battery voltage for their testing capabilities, which is only a part of what you need for an actual test. Voltage is good for understanding percent of the battery charged, but not how much power it's putting out. What you actually need to know besides voltage is CCA (or cold cranking amps), this is the actual capacity of the battery to exert power. So rather than having to take your batteries to your local Auto Part store everytime, buy this tester and have the professional test yourself on your own time, anywhere.

5) Sometimes your starting issue in your vehicle is not a bad battery, but rather a starter or alternator. So you can easily rule these out too by just testing them with the same tester too. You just hook it up to the battery posts just like you would for a battery test, select either the Starter or Alternator test on the tester, and either start the car, or leave it running, and it calculates the voltage readings needed to determine if the Alternator or Starter is bad or going bad, and you're done. Don't have to remove the alternator or starter or fumble around to get to them because you only connect the tester to the battery posts and it reads and tests through the system itself. So much easier with this tester.

None that I can think of, it's a great tool for a good price. Can't say enough about it!

I bought this item almost two years ago and have since used it on several vehicles and have never had an issue. Perhaps the other reviewer purchased a defective unit, usually you get what you pay for, in this case I am satisfied.

I bought this unit at a local store as a Christmas stocking suffer but was curious about using it. I placed it in the 12V port of my Toyota Rav4. I came back later and started the vehicle. In less than ten seconds there was smoke coming out of the port. I pulled the unit out as fast as possible. The very end of the tester was gone. Vaporized. This is the primary port in my vehicle and I use it often with many electronics and have never had any problems with this port. I wonder what may have happened if I had left the vehicle for even a moment. I definitely cannot recommend this product.

It has a high power output and works very well with the Brunton Solo Batt Pack, charging 4 AA or AAA batteries relatively quickly. What it cannot do is charge my ipod touch. I have chargers like this for other cameras, have the same design, and have functioned fine. This one arrived dead on arrival, not charging and no led. I took it apart to see its design, as returning it wasn't worth the hassle though I am sure I would have received a refund with amazon no problem. Not sure where failure is, visually its assembly looked ok. I found the np120 battery is a tight fit. Note that if you have another charger of this same design and same voltage specs but different battery size, the battery holder can usually be swapped. I was able to take the battery holder off of this one that failed and put it on another of the same chargers I have for a sony camera and it worked. See in the picture where it is rounded in both sides, if you pull down there, this is the part that holds the battery-it is modular and comes out.

I really like the flat, non-tangling USB cable included with the two adapters. During a recent power failure here, I used the car adapter and cable to recharge 2 iPads, and this handled that fine. The flat sync cable is nice so you dont get the tangled wire mess but the two chargers i thought look and feel cheap. also all 3 peices are a different shade of green. Not that its a big deal they still work but just something i noticed. Also the charger does not lock into your ipod/iphone/ipad so if you pick it up while its charging the cable falls out. Also the picture description shows a stylis and something else but these two items do not come with it. So either the picture is off or i got ripped off.

Product arrived on-time but missing the so called Verizon logo, guess this is done for a reason, that is supposed to be on the front of the charger. I'm not going to risk plugging this into my new Thunderbolt, don't know what might happen to the phone.

It does provide the rated 300 watts without overheating or shutting down as long as adequate ventilation is provided, these do generate heat that must be dissipated. No complaints here considering the cost.

I purchased this inverter thinking it would be at least ok compared to the true sine wave model. Truth is it's not even close. It did, however meet my needs as a backup unit.

It was able to deal with a 200W light load, but anything over that and it struggled. It will also run a very small motor, like a coffee grinder.

It is also much smaller than described. I was pretty surprised when I opened the box. Actual size is 5.75 x 1.75 x 3.5"

The sine wave was not good enough to run electronics without serious interference. Additionally, the maximum wattage output for this device was 40w, rather than 300w. I am surprised that this product received any positive reviews. I suppose that some of these products are far less faulty then others.

I bought this with two day shipping.

It came as ordered. Awesome.

After unboxing...Well, I do not know where to begin.

1) item clearly was different than the photos.

2) Item listed on amazon says 3.0 mega pixels, manual clearly states 2.0, this is a false listing on amazon.

3) Item clearly has two buttons for recording, the one I received had 4 with mp3 headphones. None of which I ordered and obviously more noticeable and bulky.

4) attempts to ask manufacturer about the microsd slot, does it use microsdhc or is the older type, have gone unanswered. There is no way to tell if it actually takes a 8gb or not.

5) item listed as 30 FPS, manual states 25-30 FPS with no way to adjust that.

6) Resolution listed on amazon is 736 X 480, manual clearly states this is not so. The actual resolution in manual is 640x480.

7)I set it up to charge, blue light came on, hours later blue light is still on, but nothing works at all. Cannot see it in the computer, cannot change 'mode' etc..this item appears dead.

All in all, I feel like I bought an item off ebay from a d-bag seller who lies and cheats. For this price I expected what I bought, not some old fake pair that does not work.

Stay away from this seller and their products. Me? I am starting the dang refund/return process, this is dung.

These glasses are being shipped back to the vendor. The video camera function did not work. When I tried to record a video it only captured the audio for playback. In addition the still shot pictures were not very clear. Also the manual does not conatain any customer service number or warranty information.

This is my 4th purchase of this from different vendors and this has the best quality so far. The video and sound qualities were good. Unfortunately, the internal battery did not last long. There should be a way to replace the battery myself in case the warranty expires. Not comfortable if I will recommend this to buy. Another thing, I got this for $86 3 weeks ago and now it is on sale for $57 :(

I might try the i-Kam extreme. Hopefully this will last longer...

I bought two of these glasses as gifts. We charged them up for 12 hours as described in the rather brief "manual" and then tried to turn them on and record a video. Immediately we noticed the buttons hurt our hands when we tried to hold them down for 3 seconds (power on) or 5 seconds (record) according the instructions. Both glasses powered on, but neither went into a recording mode. One of the glasses did not power off at all. We tried doing a reset of both glasses to no avail. The glasses do not work and we are returning them today. It is too bad because they are a fun concept. Perhaps another vendor will eventually get it right but in the meantime ... avoid this product.

What a cool toy/gadget! Until it stopped working after about 2 weeks of respectful use. =(

I've attached a "before and after" video. The before video shows how the video looked before the camera arbitrarily stopped working... The after video shows the hopeless pink and green stripes, which is all it will produce now. I treated the glasses with the greatest care, kept them in their case and never dropped them. They just went flakey on their own.

The product received is not quite as pictured on Amazon (it's very similar but the light is red not blue, the grips/markings on the fat end are different, and the button to retract the cord is different), nor does it appear to be a Verizon product, but I like the product and it was inexpensive (less than $6 with s/h). The cord is thin, but shouldn't be a problem if you're careful with it. Even if you use it a lot and it does break in a year or two, it would be cheap to replace with another one. I've had it less than a month, but it appears to be a great product at a great price.

For the guy whose charge port slid into the unit, I would imagine that there are screws under the rubber feet that could be removed to take the unit apart and repair it. I had to do a similar repair to my large Duracell (Xantrex) power pack/starter battery/inverter when it's charge port slid back into the unit.

I have a Droid3 phone that I wanted to use this device to charge while on a long flight. It worked sort of. I had to keep turning it on and back on again. According to the manual, if it flashes two lights while you are attempting to charge a device, this is the signal for an overload. This happens sometimes if you connect more than one device at a time, the manual says. But I never did that, only just tried to re-charge my phone in flight. Unfortunately I had to keep watching as it charged to make sure it kept working. Not sure if it is peculiar to the Droid 3 but I could not find an obvious solution to this nagging problem. So yes it works, but it isn't plug & forget. I think IGo makes more reliable products.

I bought this product to use USB-powered devices in my car, instead of going through bulky/near obsolete 12V cigar lighter power jack.

I am very happy with the USB adapter.

Pros are:

The small profile USB port is excellent. You will see why it is called 'micro'. It is so small that USB port seems as an integral part of car. However, the small profile may make it hard to pull out when necessary.

Build quality is good. So, it doesn't feel cheap.

It fits to the cigar lighter jack tight. Unlike some poorly designed accessories, once inserted into tthe lighter port, this USB port doesn't creep back out.

One star minus is because the iPod/iPhone charge/sync cable port is thicker than that of Apple genuine cable port. So, it doesn't fit through my iPhone case.

The charger itself seems to work just fine, charges my IPhone 3GS fast. However the included cable is horrible, terribly bad cable. Why?

1. Cable is way too stiff, not flexible. I don't see how this works well for any cable connected to your iPhone. It is ultimately going to put a lot of mechanical stress on your iPhone dock connector which WILL make it fail prematurely. If you don't have something to stick your iPhone in, your phone gets pushed around by the cable and either becomes disconnected, or knocks your phone onto the floor somewhere where you can't reach it.

2. The connector does not lock into the iPhone dock, meaning combined with the overly stiff cable, the cable often becomes disconnected defeating the whole point of having a charger in your car.

If you are interested in this product and have an extra USB to iPhone cable, or are willing to buy a better made cable, this product might makes some sense.

I personally do not like to reward companies that sucker customers into buying a poorly implemented and lazily designed product that, whether intended or not, takes advantage of consumers.

Perhaps they have fixed the cable issue, but I kind of doubt it.

This belkin charger is just what I was looking for. When I purchased a new iPod my old generic charger didn't work. I needed one that did. The reason I went for this one was the compact design. It sure is small! The included charring cable is well made and nice and long. Good stuff!

I ordered this product based on the images someone submitted of the F8Z446 BELKIN Micro charger in the OEM packaging, as the description reads. This is NOT the same product. What I received was a GENERIC product NOT MADE BY BELKIN. The packaging was for a different Belkin product--obviously reused--with a generic cable and charger inside. The numbers printed on the charger I received are F8Z445ea. This is the product number for the generic, $1 charger I could have bought anywhere. I have the real F8Z446 (purchased at an Apple store) and this is NOT it. I'm disappointed that Amazon is letting a seller get away with fake packaging. I was granted a full refund, which I will use towards a real OEM charger.

Well, it's priced to work for only a short time. Ours came apart, so it does not hold up to normal use well. I was able to wrap tape around it, but I don't expect it to last long. If you only have one phone type in the family and you don't unplug it much, then it may be fine for some time.

it is super light weight and best suited to charging smart phone sized items, it will give a half charge to a full sized ipad device, but not full. I find that because it is all inclusive with the battery it is more suited to throwing in a bag or back pack reducing cables and complexity of having a stand alone battery pack, If you want to charge up an ipad get the extreme with the bigger battery..
