I purchased this stereo because I wanted a car stereo with Bluetooth, a little extra power, better sound quality, and flash drive support. I'm happy to say that this stereo performs all these functions well.

Installing the stereo is just like installing any other stereo, except for installing the microphone. The best spot for the microphone is probably the A pillar (at the top). It sounds complicated, but the microphone took about 15 min. to install. I ran the cable down through the rubber seal on the side of the door, but how you mount the microphone depends on your car.

The Bluetooth works very well. What I start up the car, the radio automatically connects to my phone. Music through Bluetooth sounds pretty good, although it can be a little fizzy. Call quality is great; everyone can hear me well (they can even hear the person in the passenger seat), and everything sounds right. If you are on the phone as your car is starting up, it will automatically transfer your call to the stereo, which is extremely convenient, especially if you're in a hurry. Answering calls is simple, and incoming calls will mute the radio.

The removable faceplate is also an important feature for me. Car break-ins happen in my neighborhood, so this is very necessary. The radio without the faceplate has a flashing red light to symbolize a car alarm, which is nice.

Music sounds pretty good. Definitely not audiophile quality, but it sounds much better than a stock radio. Percussion sounds clear, and everything sounds right. It can also go pretty loud without distorting. None of the frequencies are exaggerated or lacking, and it sounds neutral for the most part.

However, this radio has some minor annoyances. The faceplate feels rather cheap, and you really need to read the manual to know how to do simple things, like setting the time. It would have also been nice if the full dial pad was on the faceplate. The included remote does have a full dial pad, and while the remote does work well, it would be much simpler to just have the dial pad on the faceplate.

Overall, this is an excellent stereo with a lot of features. For the price, the disadvantages can be overlooked.

So I primarily bought this for the bluetooth function because i hate earbuds and i tried a visor clip speaker that just didn't get loud enough, especially on the highway.

I bought this so that i could use the power of my stereo to hear my calls better.

KaChing! I could turn the volume up as much as i desired for each road condition and hear my calls perfectly. I took time to ask everyone how well they could hear me, and they all had good reports, no echos or hearing problems to speak of.

Connectivity was very easy and my phone auto connects every time i turn the car on automatically, no batteries to worry about.

I hooked up my ipod, and it worked great as well as charged while driving with the included cable. very nice.

Raido tuning was very good. Cd player very good.

The interface is very user intuitive, you don't feel like you need to read the manual, you just use it, which i like.

and for the price? $69.99 with free shipping, this was a no brainer. The quality is there.

UPDATE: 2/26/12

Still loving this Stereo. While I used to use my blackberry to sync, I've recently upgraded to iPhone. I now can stream Pandora Internet radio to the stereo using the bluetooth channel. Very cool. Or use a program called TuneIn to listen to live radio broadcast across the country, again just streaming via the bluetooth channel. Setting up bluetooth calling on my iPhone was easy as 1234 (literally, that's the pairing code).

Everything has continued to work excellently.

UPDATE: 8/9/12

Still love it. Bought a second one for my wife's van. Been using the iphone port a lot lately for audio books and it performs flawlessly. automatically picks up where you left off when you plug it in. What a value.

I purchased this Dual receiver because I wanted my phone to connect via bluetooth. Previously, I was using the aux/line in connector to connect my phone up to play audio and receive calls. The problem with this is that if you decided to switch the recevier over to CD or radio, any calls you receive on the phone go to... nowhere. With the bluetooth functionality, any incoming call mutes the other audio and plays the call over the speaker. I have tested this part of it, and it works well.

One caveat: the included microphone has a clip that doesn't seem to clip to anything. I tried it all over the car: rearview mirror, air vents, plastic trim, nothing. I did finally get it to clip onto one of the air vents, but every time I touch it, it pops off. I will end up using a piece of double sided tape or velcro to fix this. I also tried it in my wife's car, a Ford Escape, with similar issues. Maybe they expect you to clip it onto your shirt as you drive?

For Smart Car owners, see below:

---

NOTE: I bought several products for the same upgrade, so I'm posting the same review with links on each product.

I was replacing the double-din factory radio in my Smart 451 Fortwo and this harness made it very easy. The individual wires are labelled by function (ie, left front speaker postive). I had purchased a Dual XDMA6415 receiver with bluetooth built in and the included wiring harness matched up color for color with this Metra harness. I also bought the Scosche DIN With Pocket adapter, which made it very easy to install the radio.

This was my first time installing an aftermarket stereo. The wires were pre-cut so you can pull the insulation off. You can either use crimp connectors or simply twist the wires around each (splice) and use electrical tape. With the Schosche pocket and the Metra harness, you can assemble the entire thing outside the car. Once the car's harness just clicks into the Metra harness and everything slides into place.

One thing I did not get was an adapter for the antenna. The antenna connector in the car is a flat adapter, whereas most aftermarket stereos have a 1" pin. Be sure to pick one up. It took some searching to find out that the adapter I need is a 40-VW10. I have mine on order, so hopefully it will work. (UPDATE: yes, it works)

UPDATE (6/30/2012): After a year, the radio is still going strong with no issues.

I ended up getting some tik-tak (sticky silly-putty like thing) to hold the microphone onto my steering wheel column. I used nail polish to "paint" it black and it blends in perfectly. It looks like the microphone is molded onto the column.

I do not like the combination button to mute or hang up the phone. By pressing this button, you could either a) mute the conversation, or b) disconnect the conversation. Similarly, the place call button is also the pairing button.

A stereo has died in my 10 year old car and I've started looking for replacement.

This unit fit the bill perfectly. Although, I never heard about Dual brand, little i-net search revealed that it is quite sound; not a no-name Chinese garage built.

This unit is very feature rich and, as far as I can tell, so far all of them work. Can't comment on iPod interface, as I use any/everything but iCrap.

Bluetooth works like a charm picks up my phone when I start the car and stay connected. I placed a microphone behind the steering wheel. People can hear me well (better than a headset I used before, and I can hear them perfectly through the speakers. Bluetooth music streaming (from the phone) works decently as well.

USB port (a #1 selling point for me) works very fast and well.

Disks play good.

I'd say that the interface could be a bit more streamlined, but for the price, it's too much to ask.

Display is a bit smaller than on most of modern units, but it has all the information. And no distractive flashing things. Anyway, when you're driving, last thing you want is to stare at your stereo.

Overall sound quality is better than that of my previous Kenwood.

I bought this Dual XDMA6415 less than three months ago. At first it worked fine but even after the first couple weeks, I started noticing problems. It became fuzzy sounding and the bluetooth stopped connecting. My iPod stopped charging and I replaced the chord twice with no results. After checking the wiring and the device, there is no connection problems. Now the radio does not function at all, nor does anything else for that matter.

I emailed the company about the 1 year limited warranty and after three weeks, never received a response. I called the contact number listed and I can never speak with an actual person. I am really disappointed with amazon, because they should not be selling a product with such a sketchy service warranty. I guess you get what you pay for. I should have spent the extra cash instead of wasting it down the drain with this piece of crap.

Battery Tender 021-1164 10W Solar Charger

Battery Tender 021-1164 10W Solar ChargerThe Battery Tender 10W solar panel worked well for 7 months. Now the control unit has apparently failed and the charging LED only flickers occasionally. I was propping the panel against the inside of the windshield of my parked car where it could receive direct sunlight in the afternoon, but even when the sunlight was indirect, the LED charging indicator on the Battery Tender would glow as soon as the sun was fully up in the morning. The car in question doesn't get driven enough to keep its battery from running down, and the solar panel was doing an excellent job of maintaining the battery. I had purchased an adapter cable that plugged into the car's cigarette lighter socket so it wasn't too inconvenient to set up and remove the panel. [Battery Tender Deltran Cigarette Lighter Adapter 081-0069-5]

Previously, I needed to use a battery charger every couple of weeks and now, unfortunately, that chore has returned.

the "charger" works great to maintain a charged battery for exteded periods of non use but did not work to charge a low battery.

Buy Battery Tender 021-1164 10W Solar Charger Now

I purchased this Solar Battery Charger to maintain the battery in my vehicle while it is not in use for extended periods of time. Nearly all cars have alarm systems and other devices which draw power from the battery on a continuous basis. This current drain can reduce the battery voltage enough to cause Sulfides to form on the plates of the battery. When this happens, the battery is doomed to an early death. The solar charger generates just enough power to counteract the small current drains, and prevent the battery voltage from dropping. I had it connected to a vehicle which was taken out of service for several months. When I switched on the ignition and hit the starter, it was just as strong as if I had used the car yesterday. I'd call that a darn good product! I also shopped around and purchased the power plug (cigarette lighter) adapter, to further simplify connecting the solar charger to my car.

BlueAnt USEN-BAW-SENSE Bluetooth Handsfree Car Speakerphone - Retail Packaging - Black

BlueAnt USEN-BAW-SENSE Bluetooth Handsfree Car Speakerphone - Retail Packaging - BlackI have been selling wireless since 1996 and have used multiple headsets, hands free solutions, etc. This has the best voice quality of any in-car set up I have used. I was using a Jawbone, which I still have, and is excellent. I am just tired of having something hanging on my ear X hours a day. I am a gadget freak for sure but I am tired of the tool on my ear.

I made some calls at 80mph in my wife's minivan on the turnpike to friends to get their feedback before using it for business and they did no know I was on a speakerphone...that's good enough for me. The voicedialing, as with any voicedialing feature, sucks. They all suck. The voice answer did not work either say 'ok' to answer...yeah my kids were laughing at me saying 'ok' 6 times and then the call went to voicemail because it never answered. But I expected that...so just reach up and tap the answer button...no worries. My concern was voice quality, and it passed the test.

The auto phonebook transfer to a blackberry will not work from the device but will work if you do it from your BBerry's blutooth menu and push it to the device. It took about 10 minutes for my 1500+ contacts to transfer. I only did that so I could hear the name of the inbound caller, which is cool. The reality is we all have our phones right next to us when the call comes in and we can look at the phone's screen if need be.

01/09 UPDATE: I got a new car and well...I have to turn this off for business calls. It's just not good enough. What changed? Well, just my car. There is nothing worn with the device. So maybe the cars insulation is coming into play? I am driving a C6 Corvette and I am certain it is not as insulated as my previous car (Audi TT) or my wife's minivan. That being said, if your car is well insulated from road noise you should love this device. Cheers, Josh.

Being a fan of the supertooth 2, I got the supertooth 3 for the text to speech feature which is supposed to announce the caller's name based on your address book. Problem is that I could never get it to say the caller's name, instead it will only say the number. I'm using it with a blackberry 8830 and have also tried it with a Mot Krzr with the same results. Contacted the company over the phone who's support is great but they couldn't get it to say the caller's name either and suggested the I send it back. Not good for a new product.

I'm sending it back and we'll see what happens with the next one.

----------------------------------------------

Update 6-13-08:

We still can't get the ST3 to announce the callers name either. We are on our third one after returning two of them. In our company we have BB8830's and Pearls. Tried on both with no luck, only phone numbers are announced. Also tried on two Mot KRZR's also with no luck either. Called vendor three times now and they had me do the batt thing also. They finally said that our vendor may have had a "bad batch". This one is really hard to believe. I called our vendor who is not happy that this "may be the case". I'm now waiting for blueant to send me an envelope to send the unit back and to then send me one directly from the factory.

I'm not holding my breath on this. Guess it's like software... never by version 1.0 of anything. For a few weeks, there was nothing out there (internet search) that pointed to this problem but now it's everywhere.

Aside from that, the unit performs as good as the Supertooth Light verison.

------------------

7-3-08: Still haven't received the product return package from the manufacturer. We are still getting the Supertooth 3 device for clients though because the other "advertised" features do work and work well and so far is the most "hands free".

Buy BlueAnt USEN-BAW-SENSE Bluetooth Handsfree Car Speakerphone - Retail Packaging - Black Now

After much research here on Amazon, I decided to order the BlueAnt Supertooth3 to solve the dilemma of California's new cellphone law. I did not want any such product, but some of the available solutions are definitely less wanted than others. The Plantronics 510 Voyager would be good for a person who doesn't mind wearing gear and doesn't use sunglasses or other glasses, but I'm not a headset/earpiece kinda gal. The BlueAnt Light, with the protruding mic, sounded like a major irritation just because of the temperamental mic that would get stuck. For me, the lack of Caller ID made it unacceptable. I don't answer unnecessary calls while driving. The Jabra speakerphone does not come with a home charger. That is ridiculous, and I would never buy a product that required another purchase, when it should come with it in the first place. I saw so few reviews for the Supertooth3, which was disappointing, but decided to write one myself.

I received it yesterday. It took just under an hour to charge, and it comes with a home charger, car charger and two magnet clips. It wouldn't sync the phonebook from my LG8300, not even one at a time contacts. This means that Caller ID announces the incoming number, not the name, but that is okay with me. I had never used voice dial on my phone, but the Supertooth booklet instructed that one voice tag was necessary on the phone in order to use voice dial. So I made one voice dial call from my phone, and then tried it on the Supertooth. It worked fine. I can say, "Call Sonia Home", and it dials Sonia's home phone as opposed to her cellphone. In order to enable handsfree voice answer, one must depress the volume button until it gives the voice message that it has been done. Another reviewer of the BlueAnt Light said that the flashing blue light was driving her insane, but that light lets you know the device is working as it should. For some reason, it was not flashing right after I got it and not working, but I assume that is because I did not know how to use it.

The most annoying thing by far is in the way I have to use it, due to the fact that if I get out of my car and am within 30 feet, the BlueAnt will answer the call and I can't take it on my phone. I make many short trips and in and out of buildings at a short distance. So I have to turn off the Supertooth3 before I get out of the car, and turn it back on when I get back in. What I don't know is whether it is necessary to re-enable the voice answer by depressing the volume button every time I turn it on, but that is what I have been doing. I also wonder if these devices are made to withstand the extreme heat in the car in summer. I certainly hope so, because we have weeks at a time of 100+ degrees. I also hope it is made sturdily enough to handle being turned off and on frequently.

The voice quality of calls both ways is better than the Garmin Nuvi 360 by far. The magnets are strong. The clip was kind of hard to get on my thick visor, and I won't be able to use the business card slots on the back of the visor, but the device is small and it looks cute. It's easy to take it with you and reattach it. The battery life is said to be 800 hours if you never turn it off, and much more if you do. I will be turning it off every night.

I'd say this is the best product for this purpose, which for me is simply to comply with a law that I wish had not been passed. I find all devices to be a distraction, and a cellphone alone is less distraction than in combination with other things. Guess what? Californians can still text message while they drive! Doesn't that make you want to visit? ;)

Just as the first reviewer. I'm having the same problem with my supertooth 3. I have an Iphone and it will only announce the number not the name and Blueant requested I send it back. I will update this as soon as I recieve the new one. And yes customer service at Blueant is excellent......However, I do pay shipping back to them....that's not so good

AND NOW FOR THE UPDATE : 7/5/08 My third Blue Ant st3 is all that !.....this one works perfectly with my iphone , the first two worked fine but did not say the name of the caller.....the early models of st3 do not work with all phones.....it was software issue that has been resolved....the key here is if indeed your having problems....getting an st3 with a higher serial #....Blue Ant customer service is outstanding....Talk to Dave. he'll make it right. .... oh and i would now give this product AND OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER SERVICE a five star rating !!!

Want BlueAnt USEN-BAW-SENSE Bluetooth Handsfree Car Speakerphone - Retail Packaging - Black Discount?

I really wanted to give this 5 stars but it just wasn't perfect. How about 4.5 stars. The product pretty much worked as advertised. Uploading the address book was a snap. In minutes I had the product up and running. Controls were easy to use and voice features appeared to work just fine. I spent some time using the product in a variety of conditions and everything appears to work perfectly. Incoming sound appeared to be very good and I had no trouble hearing callers even in somewhat noisy conditions. Callers reported to me that my voice sounded a bit hollow or had a slight echo but they had no trouble hearing me. Pairing and unpairing has worked perfectly so I have been very happy using this. It has been a much better solution to me then a earpiece. Unlike other users, I actually had more trouble with the number caller ID then the name caller ID. It called out the names perfectly but seemed to have occasional trouble completing saying the number. At times it would cut part of the number off. On to the pros and cons:

ProsEasy to set up and use. Generally does everything it advertises athough not quite perfectly. Good battery life and excellent sound caracteristics, easy pairing and unpairing make this a joy to use. The case is attractive and very functional with the magnetic clips that let you unhook the unit quickly. Voice controls work perfectly.

ConsInstruction set could be better. You have to sync the address book when you add a new contact. An automated sync would have been a very nice feature. Caller ID software need just a bit more work.

Overall a very nice package. I recommend this product.

Vmaxtanks AGM 125ah for Solar Wind Power Emergency Backup Generator PV panel or Charger AGM 12V VMA

Vmaxtanks AGM 125ah for Solar Wind Power Emergency Backup Generator PV panel or Charger AGM 12V VMAX BatteryLike another customer, I did my own extensive research. This is an amazing battery for the price, and free shipping to boot. I currently have primarily wet cell batteries which are extremely dangerous and a pain to transport with that given danger of spillage of sulfuric acid. I purchased an Optima battery, which is a great product itself, however its capacity seems to max out at 66AH. That, and they seem to be a little bit overpriced. These batteries solve both problems with being AGM batteries, and 125AH. I bought two and run them in parallel and they lasted a good few days powering my entire multi-media center (Power guzzling TV, 7.1 700W surround sound receiver and speakers with separately plugged in 12" sub, PS3, Modem, router, various fans, etc.). Only down side is that they are EXTREMELY heavy (about 75lbs. each). But having worked with batteries and power for a living, I understand that that is just a fact of DC life. There is no way around it! The bigger the capacity, the heavier the battery. Plus, these are dry cell (NO MAINTENANCE).

These batteries are perfect for the applications they describe (solar). Like another customer mentioned, it even has its own torque recommendations. Given that I don't leave it with a float voltage or anything and move it back and forth from the solar panel system I built to the house to be hooked up to an inverter, I don't really pay much mind...but if you plan on leaving these in a stagnant location, I would definitely follow the torque recommendations to get maximum potential and efficiency from these batteries.

I still can't get over the free shipping! Anyway, coming from the point of view of someone who worked with batteries and DC power for a living, these are awesome batteries.

After extensive study of what type of battery to use for my solar storage, I decided to spend the extra money and buy a top of the line battery. After all, it is as important as the solar panels, if you plan on actually using the voltage once the sun goes down. This battery was a complete surprise. Be prepared to deal with the weight this is one heavy battery. It even has the tourque specifications for the terminal posts written on the top of the battery. If you are using any type of 12 volt storage this will definitely impress you.

Everything looked fine, even the little red light came on when I plugged it in. But when I connected anything to charge red light would go off and charging did not start.

A waste of time and effort.

Please don't waste yours.

Item appears in good condition. It has a small light which turns on when the charger is plugged into the car (and the car is running). It does NOT, however, charge my HP Veer 4G. I believe this is a problem related to the fact that the Veer is rather picky. Many people seem to have trouble getting a generic USB charger that works for their Veer. I will buy an official Palm charger since some reviewers for that one said it does charge their Veer phones.

The fact is that it will take too much effort to return this one. I'll keep it, hoping that one day it will be good for charging some other device.

Edit: 11/30/2012

I have found that it works well with my nook. So it seems I was right and it was just a problem with my phone being picky. I have revised my rating to be 4 stars instead of 3.

Premium Car Charger For LG Lucid

Premium Car Charger For LG LucidI have for many yrs gotten my car chargers & other cell phone accessories from another website. They are very inexpensive, often with free shipping, and I have never had a problem with anything I ever bought for any of our cell phones chargers, batteries, etc. This charger stopped charging my phone after about 8 or 10 uses. (My other car chargers are still working 2 yrs later when I change phones.) At 1st I thought it was the cigarette lighter electrical source but my GPS charges fine. Not the phone the wall charger works perfectly. And, from day one, this charger wouldn't stay in the socket -kept slipping out. For $3 I'm not making a federal case out of this, but I contacted the seller about it a week ago & they've not gotten back to me. I won't be buying any more cell phone accessories here.

car charger for my phone has been needed for a while should purchased sooner from this distributer.thanks so much was worth money

Briggs & Stratton 30470 7,000 Watt 420cc Gas Powered Portable Generator With Wheel Kit

Briggs & Stratton 30470 7,000 Watt 420cc Gas Powered Portable Generator With Wheel KitI considered many of the alternatives before purchasing the B&S 30470, and I'm happy with my decision.

I was hoping to find a model that was not manufactured in China because there have been a lot of quality control problems with hardware (and food products) that come out of China and when you are purchasing a 200 pound product, you really don't want to take a chance on having something go wrong that will require you to bring it/ship it somewhere because of a problem. Unfortunately, it seems that virtually all of the generators in this price range are manufactured in China, including this one. B&S is a US company, but as others have noted in nearby reviews: much of their manufacturing is in China. But since they are a US company and they do have a brand name to protect, that was slightly reassuring. Also, if something ever does go wrong with it, there are plenty of small engine shops around that should be able to work on it.

The Honeywell models also seemed interesting, but I got cold feet when I found where one person had published a lot of false information about them on Amazon, Home Depot, and one or two other web sites. Investigating further, I found that they are made by a small company in the Midwest that licenses the Honeywell brand name and, like B&S, does their manufacturing in China.

It's loud, but quieter than I expected. For a neighborhood where the houses tend to be at least 50 yards apart, this is not an intolerable noise level in my judgment. It seems to be no louder, and might actually be quieter, then the generators that my neighbors run. If you are really worried about noise, spend an extra $3000 and purchase a Honda inverter generator.

It starts right up and smooths out pretty quickly. It hardly skips a beat when you throw a load on it.

A nice touch is the recessed well around the gas tank filler spout any spills will tend to stay right near the filler neck and can easily be wiped up.

Some things could be better:

1) The ignition switch and key are so cheesy that I decided it would be smartest to leave the key in the switch permanently. This is my biggest complaint and Briggs and Stratton need to do better.

2) It's good that it comes with a low-oil cutoff system, but the manual indicates that the only way you know if that system is working is if it won't run. Since a lot of other things might cause it to not run, it would be nice if there was an indicator of some sort telling you that the low-oil protection system had disabled it.

3) Since I'm using this to power my service entrance panel (I have an interlock in the panel that prevents backfeeding), and since the neutral and ground are bonded in the panel, I need to modify the generator to have a "floating neutral", instead of the "bonded neutral" that it came with. The majority of portable generators have this same issue: very few are shipped with a floating neutral. That's fine if you want to use it standalone to run extension cords, power tools, etc, but it's wrong for powering a house when there's a service interruption. All of the manufacturers need to do a better job of documenting this requirement and making the configuration change easy to accomplish. Briggs and Stratton doesn't even talk about it in the manual, but they did respond when I e-mailed them and they did assure me that this modification would not void the warranty.

4) It would be really nice to have a gauge that showed me what my current load is, or at least what my peak load has been. I calculated that this model would be big enough to run the refrigerator, the well pump, the furnace, and a few other things, but it would be reassuring to have a gauge tell me that I am/am not approaching the maximum load that this model was rated for.

I had contemplated that I would manage concerns about stale gas by adding fuel stabilizer to the gas and also by shutting off the fuel valve and then letting it burn up the gas that remained in the carburetor, but the fuel valve trick is not a good idea. In order to produce the correct 60 Hz electrical frequency, the engine needs to run at constant speed. If you start to starve the engine for fuel, it spends a couple of minutes revving up and down as the fuel mixture becomes leaner and leaner, before it finally uses up everything in the float bowl. I concluded that it was better to just shut it off with the key, leave fuel in the carburetor, and go with the fuel stabilizer.

My garage doesn't really have room to store a generator, and even if it did: I don't like the idea of dragging this out into the driveway or over a snow bank when I need to use it. I wound up building a small shed to store it in. I designed it so that the roof tips up and all four sides can come off when I want to run it. That allows for plenty of ventilation and cooling, but provides a stable place, out of the way, to store it. And since the roof tips up but stays on the shed, it has some amount of protection from rain and snow that it wouldn't have if I was just wheeling it out into the driveway.

So far, I've only used it a couple of times but I've been very happy with it and it seems to provide ample power to run the things I need the most when the power goes out: submersible pump, oil furnace, refrigerator, a few lights and etc.

I am a Consumer Reports subscriber (magazine and online), this generator is brand new for 2010 and it has not yet been reviewed by Consumer Reports. The last ratings they have for generators was in June of 2009, one of the top ranked then was Briggs and Stratton model#30242. I purchased model#30470 from Ace Hardware because at the time it was cheaper than Amazon(same price now).

This generator comes almost fully assembled, all I had to do was put on the wheels and add oil, (provided) gas and connect the negative battery terminal. It started with the key on the first try and I don't think it is loud at all, my neighbors even commented on how quiet it is for a generator (my Echo Backpack leaf blower (74 dB(A) is almost as loud as this generator). I have run this generator at half-load 3,500 running watts using 30 and 20 amp extension cords and have had no problems. I fully expect this generator to handle the brutal New England winters without a problem.

Living in a house that has well water with 3 young kids and the fact that neighborhood looses power frequently and with a history of multi-day outages, made the purchase of a generator a necessity.

I spent weeks researching generators, and kept coming back to the B&S 30470.

I have had great results with Briggs and Stratton engines going back to a 1979 lawn mower that i could not kill (wanted my dad to buy a self-propelled or lighter unit after 10 years of use) I digress...

I was fortunate to get the unit hooked up to a transfer switch by an electrician the day before Hurricane Irene came and I was so glad that I did. Before putting the generator to use, I loaded it with Mobil-1 Synthetic 5W-30. The drain plug on mine was on super tight and was nearly a knuckle buster when I broke torque. Below is some tips and advice that I have gleaned from my research and hope that it helps others.

1) Purchase price of the generator is typically not your only expense to getting power to your house. You have to consider the cost of a transfer switch, electrician, cable purchase which can run about $150 for a 50ft run, shed cost (if you plan on storing outside). You can also cheap charlie it and just use extension cords. But in my case the hastle of dealing with bugs in the summer, heat escaping in the winter and kids yanking or tripping on cords zig zagging through the house made the cheap charlie route not pass the WAF (wife acceptance factor).

2) Oil Consumption -I have read in Popular Mechanics that air cooled engines on average can consume 1 oz of oil per hour. I just changed after 5 hours and did not notice a drop in level. Knowing the potential for oil consumption, I am going to check oil level religiously during use and keep spare oil on hand.

3) Changing oil -Getting a rigid oil transport container under the drain plug is very difficult. My solution is to cut a reasonable size square opening say 2" x 2" in a 2 liter soda bottle and drain into the bottle first.

4) Use fuel stabilizer irregardless if you think that you are going to use it all up. Gas goes bad really fast especially E10 which is dispensed in most major metropolitan areas. Gas will turn to varnish and gum up the engine.

5) I want to explain the differences in float charger versus a trickle charger. I see so much misinformation in reviews on other sites. A float charger will only charge at the natural rate that the battery looses power. For example if a battery looses 5% a day, then the charger can only charge at 5% a day. A trickle charge will apply a constant charge to a battery, which could potentially lead to an overcharge which is a bad thing. Also all portable generators that I have seen do not charge the battery when they are running.

The cons:

The key insertion when the rubber cover is a little pain for me because the orientation of my generator in my enclosure. YMMV.

Noise, some might complain that it's too loud, I do not have any comparisons to other generators nor am I really close to my neighbors.

Oil change process.

Pros:

B&S reliability

Decent run time

A whole lot cheaper solution than a 12kw natural gas generator.

Bought this after last year's brutal snowstorm. I liked that it definitely handles my needs to operate comfortably (home mostly propane) and I like the key start. I keep it in the garage with the battery charger plugged in so it's ready when I need it and had an electrician install a manual transfer switch.

The electrician tested the generator hooked up to the switch with the well pump and most of the normal 120 circuits I'd want in a storm with no problem. He flushed the toilet repeatedly to empty the well tank so I could hear what a normal "blip" at the generator would sound like while the pump kicked in and refilled the tank.

I am rural so the noise is not an issue for me. I've not run this generator for a lot of hours but have run it the 5 hours prior to changing the oil the first time so it is ready for anything that this coming winter brings.

I purchased this generator after doing a lot of research and kept coming back to Briggs & Stratton due to the availability of repair parts (if ever needed) and the noted reliability of their products. The transaction through Amazon was flawless and they had the best price (after promotion) by well over $150. Shipping through ABF was perfect and the driver was polite and right on time. They unloaded the generator for me right into the garage.

I have already broken in the engine by running it for an hour and changing the oil. I have since had a heater and air compressor hooked up with no issues whatsoever. The generator comes packaged well and assembly is quick and easy. I would definitely recommend this model and Amazon as a seller to anyone who is in the market to purchase a generator.

WouXun KG-UVD1P 136-174/420-520 MHz Dual Band Handheld Two-way Radio + Wouxun Walkie Talkie Remote

WouXun KG-UVD1P 136-174/420-520 MHz Dual Band Handheld Two-way Radio + Wouxun Walkie Talkie Remote Speaker Microphone + USB Programming Cable for Baofeng UV-5R/ Wouxun UVd1P/ UV6D Two Way Radio
  • Handheld Two-way Radio with Dual band Dual frequency Dual display Dual standby
  • Dual Band, Dual Frequency, Dual Display and Dual Standby
  • VHF&UHF, UHF&UHF or VHF&VHF working modes

Can't beat it for the price. Well built. Covers large bandwidth.Tons of features. Great audio. I get great reports from others and I like the sound of others who have this unit. Came with lapel mic and hand mic. One downside is that the manual is NOT written for a beginner to amateur radio. The manual simply explains what the menus are and what the options are for each menu. There is not discussion about what the menu item is used for or why one needs it. Search the web for alternate Wouxun programming instructions.

Beginners will almost certainly need to get on a local repeater to meet and talk with others (unless you alreayd have a friend locally you can talk to). Remember this... Frequency mode is your sandbox. Channel mode is your storage. For beginners:

Search the Internet for a repeater in your area. Get the receive frequency, and teh PL tone frequency and offset direction. Common references to repeaters are like this: 146.300 + PL 107.2. Offset for the 144 mhz range (2 meter band) is typically 600khz and very often in the up direction (+). Offset for 440mhz range (70 cm band) is typically 5mhz and often down (-).

Put the radio in Frequency Mode.

Tune to the receive frequency (e.g. 146.300). You may be able to hear people on the repeater.

Use the menus to set the offset to 0.600 for 144mhz range or 5.000 for the 440 range.

Use the menus to set the frequency direction to + or depending on the repeater reference.

Use the menus to set the PL tone (e.g. 107.2)

Press the push-to-talk button and annouce yourself. You should hear the repeater reply to you and hold a carrier open after you release the push-to-talk button.

At this point make sure things are working. Now use the menus to save the settings you have as a channel.

Repeat this "get things working in frequency mode then save what you have as a channel" method for any frequencies or repeaters you may want to use.

In channel mode you can tune in all the channels you have saved. Your channel numbers are for your reference. Unlike CB radio and marine radio, amateur radio does not have universally assigned channels. If you save 162.400 mhz as channel 1 then for you channel 1 is the weather. Someone else may have a different frequency as their channel 1.

Fosmon Premium Quality Retractable Car Auto Charger for Samsung Epic 4G Sprint Smartphone

Fosmon Premium Quality Retractable Car Auto Charger for Samsung Epic 4G Sprint SmartphoneAfter buying a Rocketfish car charger at Best Buy for my Samsung Epic 4G phone and learning the charger didn't deliver enough current (600ma) to trigger a change in the battery status to a charging mode, I returned that $22 charger and bought this one on the hopes it would work. Well, same issue...it didn't. There are no markings on the charger to indicate it's current rating, and I think one rated at least 750ma (same as the a/c indoor charger) is needed. I've been using a single USB port/car charger plug rated at 1A with USB/microUSB cable and that has worked fine with the Samsung Epic 4G, but I liked the idea of this retractable cord style of charger. Too bad it's useless. The cord was a bit short for my preferred way of using it in the car with a glove box power socket, but it was usable.

I love this car charger. It is retractable and I love it. My old car charger was broken due to someone stepping on the cord. This one I do not have to worry about that. Also the cord stretches long enough to charge someone's phone in the backseat. Great purchase!!

the service was great, however, the product leaves a lot to be desired. supposedly, there is a retractable cord. The first one that arrived, the cord did not retract; notified the company and they sent a new one. The cord on the second one did not retract. So, I just use the car charger with the cord hanging down...it works fine. The company was very good about replacing the original.

The title of the review says it all. The only part that feels flimsy is the cord itself since it is super thin (likely for easy retraction) but the retraction mechanism works great and the charger works as expected.

FYII'm using it for a Samsung Epic 4G.

Solid buy.

Want HTC Sensation 4G Combo Rapid Car Charger + Home Wall Charger + USB Data Charge Sync Cable for HTC S Discount?

So when my charger broke for my HTC I was desperate to find something quick, I mean.. there was only so long that my old one would charge w/ the wire wrapped around my phone. When I came across this product I was excited, 3 chargers for pretty much $4?!(incl. shipping). Sounded like a steal to me! Figured, even if this product sucked I was only wasting $4 anyway which could have gone to something far less useful. I wanted to rush the order, but the shipping became outrageous(I think around $19) still cheaper than if I bought it at a kiosk at the mall but still expensive compared to asking price. It took regular ground shipping to arrive, came packaged in little plastic bags save for the car charger which was in a thin paper box. I've used everything in the set The home wall charger works fine, is sturdy, and I have yet to have a problem, the car charger works just as well although feels a little fragile and light. The only reason I'm not giving this product 5 stars is due to the USB cable. My original charger was a USB cord that could plug into a separate wall jack, tossed out my broken USB and plugged the new one in -it barely lasted a week! The plastic around the metal that fits into your phone snapped off in two pieces leaving the wires exposed. Was able to use it for a day before the wires tore :(

Xantrex Technologies Prosine 1000 Prosine 1,000 to 1,500-Watt Power Inverter

Xantrex Technologies Prosine 1000 Prosine 1,000 to 1,500-Watt Power InverterUPDATE I bought this 12/07 and it's now 08/09. Amazon is selling a remote faceplate along with the prosine inverters. YOU DON'T NEED TO BUY IT. The inverters come with a built in faceplate and 4 screws remove the screws and insert a male-female modular phone cable to extend the remote control to wherever you want it. Amazon did remove the cautions about generators, so I am removing my paragraph about the difference in generators and inverters. My pro-sine 1000w nominal, 1500w peak has proven to be as reliable as a power outlet in my home, and in analyzing the power quality with fluke tools it is equal to or better than the power from the grid, which says alot.

Note when this was written the price was $549 and was the best deal on the net. Amazon has raised their price but the Xantrex prosine series is still in the top tier of inverters. Also note that Amazon's description makes reference to a staged charger the prosine series HAS NO CHARGER and is reliant upon an external charger (alternator, AC, or solar etc) so amazon should correct their description. I later purchased a D31M Optima battery and a 1.5 Farad capacitor Optima Batteries OPT D31M Group 31 Marine Battery, BlueTop POWER ACOUSTIK 1.0 FARAD Digital Power Capacitor (POWER ACOUSTIK PC10F) to improve the surge performance of this inverter for starting an air compressor. I also added a 50 foot 10/3 extension cord to use with it so that power would not be wasted in the extension see: Coleman Cable 10/3 50-Foot Vinyl Outdoor Extension Cord #02688-88-02 Updated 1/2008. Using these add-ons makes a very functional 1000W continuous inverter with 1500 watt surge capability that operates in my car and doesn't complain what I operate from it.

(paragraph wondering why amazon put generator info on this product now removed it is not a generator it converts 12 volts DC from a battery or car alternator to 117 VAC with a true sinewave output that won't damage delicate appliances)

PROS:

Lets start positive: Inverters are almost silent. They make a very very slight buzzing sound on the poor quality models, but a true sine wave inverter is almost completely silent except for cooling fans which only come on under high power use and turn off when it is cold outside or you are running a transformer adapter)

A true sine wave is just like the power that comes from the utility. A modified sine wave is squared off without round corners this causes heat generation in alot of electronic devices and can blow fusses even blow transformers. For those non-electricians it's like using square tires on a car meant for round tires! I have used alot of modified sine wave inverters in my time they are much smaller, much cheaper, and tend to DESTROY your expensive electronics. That is why I bought a TRUE sine wave inverter the power is just like what comes from the wall socket, but you pay more for the inverter and get less power out. It's a tradeoff that can save your valuable electronic parts. For me, this one will drive > $250,000 in Agilent test and measurement gear in my truck, so $549, which is the best price around, is cheap! (revised: 1/08 not any more several companies sell it for 599) revised 08/09 now they are $750 inflation.

OK more pros the Xantrex brand comes with a nice LCD display showing volts, amps, and watts. This display can be removed and relocated in your vehicle with a simple telephone cord for $5. REVISED YOU DON'T NEED TO BUY THE SEPARATE CONTROL PANEL JUST RELOCATE THE BUILT IN ONE using a phone cord. No exposed printed circuit boards are present and the remote display is self contained as it comes from the factory. Other higher wattage Xantrex sinewave inverters do not include this display and sell it optionally for $400 alone. Some sites advertise the display board as an optional item. I don't know why it comes with the inverter in the 1000/1800 watt variant. Cheaper brands have red/green lights on the front that are permanent. Like a fine auto, guages are essential to proper operation to know when your battery is dying or if you have a bad connection somewhere. The LCD display shows Volts, Amps, and has a bargraph showing your instantaneous wattage including surge to 1500 watts.

You should know the two prosine models (1000/1800 watt continuous) each come in 3 models version 1 is hardwired for an RV by an electrician (no GFCI, conduit fittings in/out), version 2 is hardwired with an auto switchover when AC is present (just like a UPS but meant for LONG runtimes), and ver. 3 has a GFCI outlet on the front panel to just plug into but no AC connection at all. This model is the 3rd variant. You give it a 12VDC source and it gives you 1000 watts (1500 surge watts for a few seconds to start lights, motors, and such). Keep in mind that to get 1500 surge watts, you need 150 amps at 11 or so volts. That is not going to come from the cigarette lighter this must be installed with heavy wire going to a top of the line battery as startup currents for some devices may be 130+ amps. Motors and incandescent lights can draw as much as 10x their operating power at startup, which is why a good inverter gives you both max and surge values.

Also use caution when buying any inverter advertising will push the "surge" value which may be for only 1/2 second on some models (about 3 seconds on this one). Your real operating power is the lower number.

If you want one of the other models they are more expensive and you can add features later if you really need them, but its not an easy task. Odds are you don't need these features but if you think you do, this is the wrong model it is the entry level model w/o all the features. There is also an 1800 watt version available for more money. I bought this because of the value at the $549 pricepoint. Today I'd probably buy the 1800 watt model as the prices are closer. Everyone else is $680. (note prices are higher now)

Another "PRO" of this is the xantrex inverter has a power down (sleep) mode where it will wake up every 2.5 seconds and look for a load connected to it if there is no load of 10 watts or more (i.e. lights are turned off) then it goes back to sleep for 2.5 seconds. In this mode it only uses 1.5 watts from your batteries. It's very efficient this way to not drain your batteries if you turn off your load when it is not in use. Idiling (running the inverter without a load) takes about 22 watts instead of 1.5 watts in sleep mode. You can turn sleep mode on or off if you want full power 100% of the time. In sleep mode you will notice the NEON lights of your power strips blink every 2.5 seconds during sleep mode that is the inverter searching for a load to run.

Another design pro is the LCD dot matrix display can be removed and extended from the chassis for remote mounting (i.e. keep the inverter near your batteries and put the monitor near the drivers seat in an RV). I used a $5 phone extention cable to do this. If you plan to use it in a vehicle look into battery isolation modules these allow your batteries to charge while driving and drain your EXTRA batteries with the inverter while not draining your engine starting battery (kinda important!) I used a system like this to run an electric heater in my truck camper in the nevada winter batteries charge during they day while driving and keep the truck warm at night, even running cooking tools for dinner.

Back to the inverter, now let's address the cons.

One sorta con and sorta pro is that the inverter is air cooled. The fan is VERY fast. Under light loads (50 watts or so) it doesn't even run the fan. As soon as you run 1000 watts (ex: printing on a laser printer) it runs the fan at full speed. In between it runs slower to minimize noise. It's a good compromise between needlessly running the fan and quickly cooling the inverter under heavy load.

Another con is that "TRUE SINE" inverters are not as efficient as "Sorta Sine" inverters are. In a perfect world if we need 1 amp at 120V, it will take 10A at 12 V to get it. Due to the fact that this not a perfect world, it's more like 14A at 12VDC to get 1A at 120VAC. Because this inverter can make 8.3A @ 120V (8.3A x 120V ~= 1000W neglecting the power factor which is beyond this review's scope google "power factor" to understand it.) You need 8.3 * 12-14A at 12VDC. That's alot of amps, over 100 amps give or take the efficiencies and surges. YES IT TAKES >100 amps at 12VDC if you want 1000 watts out! This means HEAVY wire to your batteries. Notice I said batteries. You can wire more than one in parallel (all positves touch, all negatives touch, AND *NO* positive touches any other battery negative such as in 24V battery systems) and you can divide the load 2 batteries in parallel and your 100 amps is only 50 amps per battery. With 4 it's only 25 A per battery. Think lots of matching batteries. A hidden "PRO" here is that the connector for the heavy cables is up to the task and won't fry when you run 100+ amps through it for hours at a time. Most inverters lack such a heavy duty connector. This unit can run 1000 watts continuous which means 100 amps continuous be sure your wiring is up to the task or it may melt. You'll want #2 to #2/0 cable to wire this up which is between $2-$8/foot.

This is simple power conversion theory and regretably there isn't anything you can do about it except add more batteries to your battery array if you intend to pull 1000 watts for an extended time. If you seldom need the full 1000 watts or 1500 watt surge rating, then you can use smaller wire, but keep the runs short.

There is alot to like about the Xantrex design. If the only thing you ever intend to run is an incnadescent light and a computer, then the cheaper "sorta sine wave" inverters (they have many names but are not "TRUE" sine wave designs) will work fine, but don't use a modified sine wave to run any of the following "delicates":

+ wall warts (with transformers they burn up from harmonics

+ microwave ovens (they have transformers too and use alot of power)

+ VCRs / DVDs / HiFi (clocks will be wrong and you'll get audio buzz)

+ some TVs (some do work on square wave but with shortened life span)

+ expensive stuff (is it worth it? Save a couple hundred and ruin it?)

+ clocks (they see time going by twice as fast without a pure sine wave)

+ flourescent lamps (the coil ballast types get really hot and blow their fuse on modified sine wave power)

Of all the options out there for a pure sine wave, Xantrex has the best name and amazon has [revised: HAD] the best price according to froogle and pricewatch.

Be sure and buy some heavy guage wire to connect the inverter unless you have a low power load. If you run 1000 watts through your cigarette lighter it will blow a fuse. If you put the wrong fuse it it will melt the wire! Run your wires to the battery.

With this inverter you can take your electrical outlet with you on the road or when the power fails have a backup source until your batteries die. A deep cycle marine battery typically will run 100A for 1 hour (or 1000 watts) so you must conserve if your runtime is important or else add batteries. Either way you'll love the clean power, no buzzing, dimmers working normally, and nothing being damaged. Short of a generator, which it is NOT, it is the best way to get AC power away from the utility grid such as solar and wind power systems, off grid living, or car outlets with clean 120 VAC. Just be sure you have a way to charge your batteries that is left up to you which is incorrectly documented about the product. Bigger Xantrex inverters do have internal chargers, but not these.

I bought mine in 2007, installed it in Summer 2008, it has been used less than 50 hours total and this Summer (2011, it's out of warranty) it went belly up, took it to the local Xantrex "REPAIR" center and guess what, it can't be repaired; OH THE IRONY! The AC board (they think) went bad and can't be replaced. What an expensive piece of garbage, no more Xantrex for me. I was told by the repair center that Xantrex is making them irreparable as their objective. I don't see how something that costs close to a grand is built with intent that it cannot be repaired. Thanks Xantrex!!!!!

Had this unit now 2 years in an 18-wheeler. it survived a voltage spikes of 17+ volts from an alternator that spiked whenever it got wet from a truck wash, Its been in 3 different trucks since. We use a hot plate, a 900w microwave, a hotel sized fridge, lots of ham radio gear, and a 40-amp 0-20v DC power supply. I also use my 1/2" variable speed drill and a 200W soldering gun with it whenever I am building custom antennas for my radio gear...Like I said,.. tough as nails. It produces NO "birdies" or electrical noise whatsoever on any of the ham bands as long as the control unit is not mounted separately. If you mount the control unit with a long cable remotely, you need a shielded cable, because it will produce some noise on the lower HF bands.

We have used one of these units on a mobile veterinary hospital 4 days a week, 48 weeks a year since 2007. It powers critical infrastructure such as surgical lights, anesthesia machines, and the computers. We have had absolutely zero problems with it.

I just ordered a second unit to upgrade our other hospital.
