Goal Zero 11004 Sherpa 50 Silver Portable Recharger

I purchased the Sherpa 50 to charge my iPhone and iPad 3 while camping. When fully charged it will charge up the iPad once from a near fully depleted iPad battery, or give 2 charges from 50%, in my experience (YMMV)

The Goal Zero system uses their own connectors which work nicely between their batteries, chargers, and solar panels. Since I already own the Sunlinq 12w and 25w panels, I needed to splice my own connectors to make these work together. I bought the Goal Zero 6' 8mm input cable extension and spliced a connector for the Sunlinq. I was able to charge the Sherpa 50 in about 4 hours from 60% to a full charge while the Sunlink 25w panel was in full sun. It would be easier (and maybe quicker) to use the Goal Zero panels, but I already own the Sunlinq.

Overall I am very pleased with the Sherpa 50; this is a well made high quality unit. My only criticism, is that the 8mm extension cord did not fit the Sherpa. I contacted customer service and they responded the next day, acknowledging the problem and recommending a fix (shave 1/8" off of the plastic connector barrel), which worked perfectly.

No doubt the "50" refers to 50 watt hours, since I will be using the GZ 27M Solar Panel almost every day on my trips I expect charging to take little time and stay charged. I thought of getting the larger one, but I figure if I felt inclined, I'll get another one of these instead of depending on ONE battery. Good quality, if a little pricy, but I expect it to last a LONG time! Can't wait 'til they put out a rubber sleeve to fit it (the one they have right now WON'T fit this one).

I use this on all my trips. When I am not using it with the solar panels, I plug it into my car adapter. Ironically my nexus 7 doesn't charge well with a car adapter, but charges fine with this bad boy.

I was extremely skeptical about the performance of a $40 detector, but after a few recent road trips, I am convinced this is actually a well functioning product. Although it does not have exceptional filtering ability for false signals, it can still give you enough X/K/Ka warning for you to slow down in time.

The two blue LED's are a great innovation, because you can easily see them out of the corner of your eye. This is extremely useful when your radio drowns out the audible signals, or when the sun washes out the primary letter warning lights.

You simply can't go wrong with the price. It does not have the features of the top of the line detectors (coiled power cord, voice alert, text readout, settings save, compass, etc), yet it has at its core the most important feature: the basic detection ability to provide enough warning for the driver.

i purchased the xtr 140 and it has been great so far, from what ive read the 330 has voice alerts and thats the only main difference. higher end radars have alot more features (compass, volt meter, aarows, pop detection etc) but none of that matters to me, i just wanted a radar detector that works. usually i find myself drifting 12 or so mph over the posted limit in the city and it gives me plenty of time to stop. besides a blip of ka when i pass a walgreens or cvs (if you are pointed at the doors its a full alert) the city 2 mode is pretty quiet. then again i can barely hear the radar when it goes off with the radio on so the lights come in handy to get my attention

i bought the 140 model because it was cheap but still accurate. i really dont care about a 3-4 mile range of detection because with instant off and instant on even a v1 cant save you if you are alone on the road. no one uses POP radar and im not going to pay another $50 for a feature im not going to use, and in the city there are so many cars on the road that i can pick up a trap in more than enough time to react.

i have had this detector for about two years now and it has yet to disappoint me. however after owning it for about a year i felt the need to splurge and purchase a higher end unit, the whistler pro 78 rev c. i thought that my top tier purchase would blow my old xtr140 out of the water, but suprisingly the performance was nearly identical. however with the pro 78 you get to select what functions you want enabled or disabled.

in short i have to stick to my original review

pros:

i have gotten over a mile detection of a K band speed trap

i have also gotten slightly over a mile detection on k/a band

very clear display

VERY cheap

cons:

lacks internal memory. doesnt save settings

"chatty" on k and specifically x band. it will pick up your cvs walgreens everytime. its best to run city II mode if you do heavy city driving

i still recommend this product to anyone when they talk about speeding tickets. always gives me plenty of time for radar alerts

the whistler also has that signal strength meter, where as i believe the cobra does not. i have a cobra esd6060 and this whistler destroys it in detection distance

Nice quality. No nonsense.

Picks up some stray X from industrial parks or commercial buildings occasionally in Highway mode if buildings are adjacent to interstate, BUT these signals easily discerned giving only one bar on strength meter, and a couple warning only chirps.

However, first night out, I had my unit reach three bars, light up the entire display like a Christmas tree, blip the periscopes constantly, basically seemed like the thing was going to implode ("scary"), and then I saw the cop! He was about 3/4 mile away, opposite side of interstate facing me with a victim pulled over, lights flashing.

Caught him a second time while exiting an off ramp in a hotel parking lot perpendicular to me prior to that with another victim! "Big, bad, Dodge Hemi" cruiser, all painted up with intimidating graphics. "Big bad", muscle car, chase car with undoubtedly the latest radar.

All I know is that this little $38 Whistler "smells" his butt a mile away like a geiger counter detecting radiation! He hangs in the same geographic area around my workplace constantly busting people (a real worka"ho"lic), but now I can "smell" him a mile away for $38!

I recently bought this detector for my wife since she racked up a few tickets lately, and it has blown me away! I have an older Whistler 1545 detector that is pushing 10 years old now, and this one destroys it (even though the old one cost twice as much). The blue lights are a real attention-getter and the volume dial is a treat (something my old one doesn't have one). This baby picks up waaay farther than my old unit. It picked up a county Sheriff last night over half a mile away, over a HILL! It also caught the splash back from one of the automated radar warning signs they park on the highway (the "Your Speed Is__" things). We were coming up to it, it was 100 yards ahead of us facing oncoming traffic (away from us), and the detector caught the reflected radar waves bouncing off the oncoming trucks. Unbelievable. You would expect his level of performance in the $100-$200 detectors, but not from one that was under 40 bucks. This baby is a real gem.

Needless to say, I am buying another one to replace my old Whislter! Highly recommended.

It's almost exactly the same as my old Whistler 1732 radar detector.The only pluses are the blue lights stand out at night,but you can't even see them in the daytime.Also, the 3rd city mode lets you get rid of the X band which almost no police use anymore anyway so it cuts down the false alerts by at least 80%.Worth it, although everything resets everytime so that sucks almost enough to want to buy the next model up.But for now it will work.Also it's way bigger than my old one.Not bad though for 40 bucks.

Worked great for about 5 days then the white part of the charger fully disconnected from the silver part. Silver part got stuck in my USB port..broken object. We got this for my wife's iPhone 4S. Insertion was difficult from the beginning, and now that she's been using it, connecting other cables (such as the standard Apple cable) to the phone is touchy and unreliable. It's not impossible to charge it, but it's become very difficult; we're throwing this cable away so it doesn't damage any other devices. I bought one of these for my nightstand and use is for my alarm clock. The phone automatically switches to the dock view with time, weather, etc. You can charge and extra battery in the back, so I always have power ready to go if needed. I bring it with me when I go on vacation as I can't be without it.

It's a decent dock and works perfectly if you just want something to charge it. It has not speakers though so it's kind of pointless to use an alarm clock. I knew this going it before buying it even though I was planning on using it in more of an alarm clock fashion. It's odd though cause on the run there is a volume button. There is a spare battery charge station on it, granted that's only helpful if you have a spare battery, which I don't, but is handy cause the Samsung Charge does eat battery if you use 4G LTE all the time. To be honest I used it pretty frequently when I first got it just to charge my phone while on my desk. It's not completely worth it though because the lack of speakers. If you wants something that allows you to use your phone as a clock and charge the phone at the same time it's perfect. If you want to use it in some fashion for music it definitely falls short of that capability.

This charger (or at least the one they sent) will NOT work with a Samsung Fascinate. The Fascinate has a recessed port for the micro-USB connection. The micro-USB plug on this charger is NOT able to access that recessed port. So to make this charger work with a Samsung Fascinate, you need to have (or get) a micro-USB extension cable.

No invoice, documentation, or other information was in the box. No model number or identifying information appears on the outside of the box or on the device. This is about as generic as you can get. It's so generic that I have to wonder if they mistakenly sent a charger that was made for a different phone.

I have been unable to set up a return at Amazon. Amazon's website keeps taking me in circles without ever actually providing a way to set up a return to the seller. While going thru circles at the website, Amazon seems to be pointing the finger at the "3rd party seller." The item, however, came in an Amazon box that included other items where Amazon clearly is the seller. So if Amazon has no responsibility for a return of the charger, I'm a little confused as to why the charger was (apparently) sent by Amazon in an Amazon box. Late Note: Was able to set up a return today. Maybe they don't let you return stuff on the day of delivery.

Also, one other thing to consider before buying this charger. If you use a protective case on your phone, you will have to take the phone out of the case each time you use the charger. It can only be mounted on the charger with the case off.

This unit ships with no instructions. It is not an inductive charging station. You need to connect the micro USB cable to the top of phone for it to charge. That's ok, but would have been nice to see that detail in photo or description. Furthermore, the phone does not sit at "comfortable viewing angle" as decription says. It sits totally vertically, not slightly slanted back as pictured. So this is just a hunk of plastic to put your phone in that does the same thing as the regular USB charging cord that comes with phone.

As I don't have a spare battery and don't want to remove the one from my phone to charge separately, I have not tried the spare battery charging feature.

For less than five bucks I got this bundle with two chargers and cover for my brightside. Feels nice to the touch although the slider function seems a bit hindered from this. But it's nice to have the extra protection and the car charger. I wish all little devices used the micro usb plug companies like Apple with their new "unique" charger only serve to make us pay more to them and trash all the old charger cables. What an un-pc and eco-unfriendly move Apple! The chargers here fit my other phones, my kindle and I love this about it.

great product. mine got banged up bad. i blame shipping. gonna suck it up. dont want to return a 50 lb product.

If I could do it all over again I would have not bought this battery charger. I mainly bought it for the high amperage boost application to start vehicles with weak or dead batteries. What I found is that the machine cranks up the voltage on the 300 amperage settings to alarming levels. I noticed this when my Mid 70's Pontiac Volt gauge got pinned during a boosted start. Turns out 30amp and 60 amp is enough for most starts anyway and the voltage is not crazy at these levels. I also wish I would have bought a automatic charger instead of having to baby sit this thing. It asks for using a hydrometer for calculating charge times(good luck with a sealed battery). I ended up buying a cheapo automatic Menards charger to compliment this charger. The battery load test/charge test seems to work ok. Only two stars from me. Please rate this review if it was helpful.

I have A 6.0 Ltr. diesel that I use as a towing vehicle. and I thought with this 300 amp boost I could jump start my pickup if ever I needed to. And yes while out on a trip, my pickup wouldn't stat one very cold morning. It' came out of the box damaged because it so heavy the bottom has a bulge in it. The end caps for the wheels were missing and had to go to home depot for the parts. Once assembled, it looks fine. I've not had the chance to use it yet so I just hope it works. I just hope the company will stand behind the product if it fails to charge or operate as intended. They need to find a better packaging system to protect their product for transport.

Koolertron 4.5 Watt 12V Car Battery Charger Solar Power Panel

This is one of the most cheaply constructed items I have ever seen. I have a slightly smaller solar panel that I use to keep a deer feeder charged throughout the winters – it cost $9 from Cabellas and better wires and connectors than this unit.

Does it work? I don't know yet – I did put it on a multi meter and it does produce 12 – 16v with mostly indirect light through a window with blinds. Don't even think that you are going to attach the alligator clips supplied to a car battery, not gonna happen. They are not made to attach to anything larger than a spring top battery.

It is working flawlessly with all three but note that your devices will charge at the same rate as they would if hooked up to a computer. If you need fast charges you'll want to stick with your device specific charger(s). For me the charging rate is just fine and if for some reason I need a fast charge I can dig out my original adapters.

This could be my stupidity in not investigating further... but the low output wattage is a big limiter for this. Basically, you're good for charging phones (slowly) and nothing more. If that's your need, then solid.

Alas, it wasn't mine.

I own two of these chargers, one of which I use for travel, the second of which I purchased for my wife. Really like this charger, it is compact, fits easily in a suitcase or computer bag (the prongs fold flat), and it has four USB sockets. I've used it to charge an android phone, IPod, a Garmin unit, and another phone while on the road with no problems.

Only disadvantage, if it stood vertically, it wouldn't hog wall/socket space. But that's the design, and it saves me from carrying lots of other chargers, so it's a decent tradeoff.

I hope it will continue to work,since the car adapter worked at 1st ,but now blows out my fuse to the car ,but not the internal fuse ,that is suppose to blow out first.

I love this thing. It allows me to hook up an underwater video camera, tiny TV, and my phone charger all at once on my boat. The only issue I have is that the area gets pretty crowded. My TV plug is a box plug, making it difficult to plug in the USB cord and lighter adapter. If all your plugs are straight, you'll be fine. It's got a built in cooling fan, as well. Fits nicely into my boats cup holder and the cord is long enough to go to my lighter outlet.

I highly recommend this.

Update: It is now the end of February 2013 and it still works like a charm.

i had this for a year, it charges everything that consumes under 200 watts, it has a 12v bypass, 2 ac outlets and a USB charging port, it has the most features of any inverter i have owned, it is also corrosion resistant and has a convenient cup design. For some reason the electrical metal contacts get very hot when using a 45W mac air adapter, i assume cigarette lighters are not designed efficiently, because there is not alot of metal contact between the plug and socket. This is a very good product, my only advice is to increase efficiency and air flow for the unit, it tends to get very hot; waste heat energy that could of been electrical energy. Thicker wire? More efficient cigarette plug design?

I ordered this product because my husband travels out of town, and is in his car more than he is home. It was very inexpensive and I just got it so he'd be able to use it until he had the time off to get a better one. Well, about a day after he used it (and LOVED it) It stopped working. Then it would work perfect. Then it would stop. It is a vicious cycle, and I would 100% recomend not getting this, unless you like playing the lottery with your car chargers..

Amazon prices are unbelieveable. I priced the same car charger and Amazon prices are about 75% cheaper. Thanks Amazon for being there.

The end of this charger does not fit in the Motorola Q9m receiver. I don't know if it's for another type of Motorola, but it is not the standard USB plug that Motorola uses for the Q9m.

It looks very similar, but it's smaller and flatter.

Item IS AS DESCRIBED, and IT WORKS PROPERLY, but I didn't notice before I ordered it, that it lacks a power indicator light to tell if it is getting power from the receptacle. Of course the phone indicates if it is getting charged but there were lights on all the other car chargers that I have had and I prefer that. It reminds me to unplug the charger before leaving the vehicle.

The cord is also not as long as I would like. It isn't long enough to lay the phone anywhere except on the dash top when connected to the accesory receptacle. Again, I should have checked before ordering.
